Yesterday was the International Day to End
Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. It is an opportunity to recognize
the crucial work journalists do in support of democracy, freedom of
expression and information, and human rights around the world.
Unfortunately, according to the UNESCO observatory, since the beginning of
2021, over 100 journalists have been killed and many more were attacked,
harassed or unlawfully imprisoned. Furthermore, woman journalists have been
disproportionately impacted by this trend, as 73 percent of the women
journalists surveyed, said they had been threatened, intimidated, and
insulted online in connection with their work. Finally, the United Nations
has emphasized the important role of prosecutorial services, not only in
bringing killers to justice, but also prosecuting threats of violence.
