UNHRC approves Gaza probe despite US,
Israeli objections
Members of the United Nations Human Rights
Council this week voted in favor of creating a permanent Commission of
Inquiry to probe root causes of tension between Israelis and Palestinians
and track rights violations in the region on an ongoing basis, despite
objections from Israel and the US. Attacks from both sides appear to have
targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure in violation of international
laws, says UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, who
warns both sides could be guilty of war crimes.Full Story: The Associated

ICAO to investigate flight diversion in
Belarus
The International Civil Aviation
Organization has announced it will investigate the apparent forced diversion
of a passenger plane by authorities in Belarus to determine whether
international law was violated. Members of the United Nations Security
Council met Wednesday to discuss the incident, with representatives from
Western countries condemning the move and calling for an ICAO probe.Full

Volcanic eruption leaves 20,000 homeless in
D.R. Congo
Over 20,000 people have lost their homes and
400,000 are in need of aid following a volcanic eruption in the Democratic
Republic of Congo, the United Nations reports, and tens of thousands are
fleeing as large cracks appear in roads and buildings and local authorities
warn the Mount Nyiragongo volcano could erupt again. The UN Office for
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns the ash cloud caused by the
eruption could drive an increase in respiratory diseases and UNICEF is
appealing for international aid, citing the increased risk of cholera
outbreaks.Full Story: Yahoo/Reuters (5/26), Business Day (South

Pandemic harms family planning gains in
Latin America
Women in Latin America have been
disproportionately affected by the ongoing pandemic and expectant mothers
face increased risk of serious COVID-19 infections, the Pan American Health
Organization reports, warning that reproductive health and newborn and
maternal care services in the region have been disrupted. "If this
continues, the pandemic is expected to obliterate more than 20 years of
progress in expanding women's access to family planning and tackling
maternal deaths in the region," says PAHO Director Dr. Carissa Etienne.Full

Report highlights need for investment in
nature
Over half of the world's gross domestic
product is dependent on high-functioning biodiversity, and yet the
destruction of the natural world has put the ecosystems of around 20% of
countries at risk of collapse, a report from the United Nations Environment
Programme, the World Economic Forum and the Economics of Land Degradation
Initiative warns. The report also notes the global community must quadruple
investments in nature to approximately 0.1% of the global GDP to avert
crises of climate, biodiversity and land degradation by 2050.Full Story: The
