UNICEF chief urges aid as India's COVID-19
cases climb
Continually climbing coronavirus case
numbers that are overwhelming India's hospitals offer a grim view of what
the pandemic could do to other countries with struggling health care
systems, UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore says as she calls on the
global community to aid the country. One of every three new COVID-19 cases
diagnosed worldwide is in India, the World Health Organization reports.Full

journalists
Journalists are facing increased threats of
abuse, censorship, detention and death amid the pandemic as they work to

Report: Inequalities hamper HIV battle
Persistent inequalities are impeding efforts
to control HIV and AIDS and the global community must increase investments
in fighting the disease, especially in lower income countries, United
Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says in a report published ahead
of a UN General Assembly meeting on AIDS. "Ending AIDS as a public health
threat by 2030 is still within reach -- many countries are showing that
rapid progress against HIV is possible when evidence-informed strategies and
human rights-based approaches are adopted," says UNAIDS Executive Director
Winnie Byanyima.Full Story: The Jamaica Observer/Caribbean Media Corporation

Female journalists face rising abuse online,
UNESCO says
Close to three-quarters of female
journalists have faced abuse or harassment on the internet, and rising
online violence correlates with an increase in physical attacks against
women in the media, a study from UNESCO concludes. "Some journalists
reported threats because they were covering elections or conflicts, or
because they were covering stories related to women's rights, or because
they are reporting issues that are wrongly identified as 'male coverage',
such as sports," says Guilherme Canela, who heads UNESCO's freedom of
expression and the safety of journalists division.Full Story: Al Jazeera
