                              Freedom House released their annual Freedom in 
the World Report which detailed a huge drop in human freedoms and civil 
liberties around the world. Authoritarian regimes benefitted from the 
COVID-19 pandemic by oppressive freedom of speech, assembly and 
representation. Freedom of personal expression faced its biggest decline 
since 2012 as authoritarians cut off access to many social media platforms 
under the guise of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also outlined the 
weakening of press freedom as media outlets around the world were restricted 
and forced to compete with an unprecedented amount of misinformation. This 
has led to a global decline in public trust of the media – a core tenant of 
democracy.
