Planetary emergencies take centre stage as
world leaders gather virtually

The Earth is careening towards a trio of
environmental catastrophes, politicians, scientists and activists said
during the Fifth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly
(UNEA-5). Their main message: humanity is running out of time to tackle
climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. During the assembly,

Can big data help protect the planet?

A data deficit is hamstringing the world’s
ability to fight climate change. But technology, from drones to artificial
intelligence, is helping to change that.

How to end humanity’s “suicidal” war on nature

A landmark report from UNEP offers a blueprint
for tackling climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, three crises
that UN Secretary-General António Guterres called an existential threat to
humankind. This year, we must make peace with nature, urges Inger Andersen,
UNEP's Executive Director.

Glacier collapse in India a worrying sign of
what’s to come

A deadly flood in northern India, sparked by
a cratering glacier, was not an isolated incident but the result of a
rapidly warming planet, say experts.
