When governments waste money on a failing and damaging fossil fuel industry, it impacts all of our daily lives, and it perpetuates crises like the one we are living. That?s why, this April, we are hosting the Global Just Recovery Gathering, a 3-day online event, full of fun and effective training sessions, graced with amazing activists, leaders, and artists to energise us. It will be a space to design new pathways for a better future for all. If we reconnect and recharge now, we can build unified pressure to end fossil finance, keep fossil fuels in the ground, and stay within 1.5 degrees of warming for our planet. Join us at the global just recovery gathering and let?s rebuild what ?normal? life should look like. Pre-register now. The rich world is mobilising unprecedented amounts of money in response that will shape our world for decades to come. The opportunity to transform our world for a just recovery and resilient and clean energy economy has never been greater. People around the world are coming together to collectively reimagine our future. Join us. In solidarity, Fenton and the entire 350.org team -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 350.org is building a global climate movement. Hi, In her book ?Hope in the Dark?, Rebecca Solnit writes that there is so much hope in uncertainty. [2] Amid headlines of 2.5 million Covid deaths worldwide -- 2.5 million human stories of sadness, it?s not easy to dig deep and find hope in the uncertainty of what comes next. [1] So how do we find that hope? Can anything good come out of this crisis? The answer is yes. We can?t possibly predict now what the long-term impact of Covid will be. But what we can do is find the opportunities to nudge things in the right direction. In other words, there is so much we can change for the better inside this crisis. And as a people-powered community of nearly 1 million people who call Europe their home, we are well placed to make that change happen. Back in January, I wanted to hear about what you thought would be worth fighting for. Many from the WeMove Europe community responded to that question and others in the survey I sent around. Results from our member survey Here are the key takeaways I wanted to share with you: The thing this community cares most about is making sure the ?750 billion in EU post-COVID recovery funding is spent on making the planet sustainable: this is probably the best chance we have of transforming things in Europe right now and we are going to take it. What it means is making sure that our governments have kickass plans to spend that money that benefit people and future generations and don't give cash to fossil fuel companies. There is more. Across our community, people care about other people, particularly migrants and refugees. We will keep up the fight for a more welcoming and humane Europe that we can actually be proud of. The next step is to make sure that Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, is accountable to us and our leaders. Frontex and its Director, Leggeri, are now being investigated by the European Parliament. [3] Could we see a change this year in how we treat people on the move? Stopping corporations from dodging their taxes rated highly pretty much everywhere. Numerous corporations, especially the digital giants, have seen their wealth and profits grow to new highs during the COVID crisis. Meanwhile this is the year when the EU will discuss whether citizens should be allowed to see how much big multinationals like Google, Facebook and Amazon pay in taxes in all countries. This is a story we can change. The question of the Common Agricultural Policy also rated high all over the place, especially in Germany, France and Italy. We still have a chance this year to get Europe over the idea of subsidising super-sized farms, fertilisers and pesticides and to get to a different way of producing food that is healthy, fair and sustainable. These are just some of the big stories of change we want to be part of this year. Against the darkness and confusion of these strange times, what gives me hope that we can change things is the power of this community when we speak out together from our different contexts, locations and languages towards the same thing. We are called upon now to throw everything we can at using this ongoing crisis to change things for the better. Let?s keep it up. We were made for this moment. Through partnerships, the Convention?s 197 Parties set up robust systems to manage land degradation and drought promptly and effectively. Good land stewardship based on a sound policy and science helps integrate and accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, builds resilience to climate change and prevents biodiversity loss. Land also plays a key role in the prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, securing rural livelihoods and creating green jobs, supporting community resilience and maintaining the sustainable delivery of ecosystem services. This week EU leaders are in key negotiations on this disastrous treaty which gives fossil fuel companies just that: It allows them to sue our governments and ruins our transition to a future that protects our environment and future generations. Help us get to one million signatures to support countries who are calling on this disastrous treaty to go. TAKE ACTION With hope, David (London), Alex (Marseille) and the entire WeMove Europe team Here is the original email in case you missed it: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fossil fuel companies are suing our governments for their climate action and are winning billions in compensation. They can do this thanks to a little-known but dangerous treaty, but we can leave it. This week, governments will meet -- France and Spain are already calling the EU to withdraw. Add your name to call the others to pull out and stop this treaty! Sign NOW Hi, After years of mobilisation, lawsuits against their government, thousands of people in the streets: our friends in the Netherlands have won. Their government heard their voices and decided to phase out coal. It is a message of hope for all of us who aspire to live in a world where we protect what is most precious: our planet. But a German fossil fuel giant and coal plant owner is using a little-known treaty to sue the Netherlands and claim about 1.4 billion euros in compensation. [1] And no EU country is safe from such an attack. This treaty - The Energy Charter Treaty, allows fossil fuel giants to sue any of our governments for changing their energy policies even if it means that our planet and future generations will suffer. Next week EU countries will start key talks on the future of this dangerous treaty. Although countries like Germany are dragging their feet, a growing number of powerful countries such as France and Spain are already calling on the EU to pull out. [2] We need other EU countries to join the revolt. To do this we have partnered with dozens of organisations across Europe and journalists who will reveal shocking stories to build the media pressure. Join the people power wave to stop this treaty! SIGN NOW The Energy Charter Treaty is a blast from the past, from a period of governments' climate denial. [3] Yet, fossil fuel companies are clinging to it for dear life because it means they can protect their profits. But protecting their profits means suing governments who dare put people and planet first. And when they win, governments have to pay compensation: our hard-earned taxes. It?s already cost Spanish citizens almost 1 billion euros. [3] Now the rage and resistance against this treaty is growing everywhere in Europe. France, Spain, and several MEPs from across the political spectrum are calling Europe to pull out of the treaty. Other powerful countries like Austria, the Netherlands, and Belgium are moving in our direction. [4] What we need now is a movement, people taking action across Europe. Next week is key, but just the start. Let?s start with a bang. ADD YOUR NAME This is not the first time that we Europeans will come together to fight the power of big corporations. A few years ago, we beat the biggest investment and trade treaty between the US and Europe - the famous TTIP. It took a lot of effort: 3.5 million signatures, and hundreds of thousands of people in the streets. But we took on the corporations, the lobbyists, 28 governments and WE WON. Now let?s do it again with this treaty which gives full power to fossil fuel industries. Sign Now The first hunting season since Trump delisted the federal protections on wolves was bloody in Wisconsin. Hunters had been given permission to kill 119 wolves; any more and their vulnerable population couldn't take it. Yet, in just three days, they slaughtered 182 wolves, or 15% of the entire wolf population in the area and 50% over their quota. This is exactly what we and animal advocates like you feared would happen if gray wolves were no longer protected from hunting. Hunters don't have the information or restraint not to kill way too many animals. It's unclear whether Wisconsin hunters knew they'd passed the limit and killed more wolves anyway, or if they just didn't realize in time to stop their overzealous hunting. But either way, just naming a limit and assuming a bunch of individual hunters will collectively stick to it is clearly not working! The state allowed this to happen, even though they were warned for years. Now 15% of the Wisconsin population of wolves is dead and gone. We cannot let this go on another year! Demand that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service immediately reinstates the ban on killing wolves before it's too late! Thank you, Lauren The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. The U.S. government is the ring-leader, and the bulk of its killing is done from the air, but ? given the deficiency in democracy in the U.S. government, which is now on its third president who promised to end the war but hasn't ? it is critical that other governments withdraw their troops. Those troops, present in token numbers, are there to legitimize behavior that could otherwise be recognized as lawless and outrageous. A government lacking the courage to reject U.S. pressure has no business sending any number of its residents to kill or risk dying in a U.S./NATO war. It's time to ban them in the U.S. Sign Now The life of a wild animal in a circus is anything but fun: they're confined to cages, denied socialization, and forced to perform unnatural behaviors for screaming crowds. While many U.S. states have implemented their own laws to regulate circuses, it's clear that patchwork system is not enough ? it's time to take this fight to save animals to the federal level. That's why we're urging Congress to prohibit traveling circuses and exhibitions from keeping wild animals, such as lions, tigers, and elephants, by passing the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act (TEAPSPA). Wild animals have been used in circuses for decades, but that doesn't make it right. Research shows that circuses can never provide what these animals need in order to be physically and psychologically healthy. On top of that, circuses have resulted in countless serious dangerous incidents, including the deaths of trainers and even injuries to members of the public. Wild animals shouldn't still be suffering in circuses. Sign the petition to tell members of Congress they must ban circuses from using wild animals! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Message-ID: <9422CE56559C46F3A5CB2CD07A5A5F8E@evol.sp.ru> UN Climate Change ?Global Climate Action 8 March 2021 NEWSLETTER Race to Zero Driving Agriculture from Breakdown to Breakthrough Agriculture can inherently help stem the climate crisis, with plants capturing and storing carbon dioxide. Yet food, agriculture and land use currently contribute to a quarter of global CO2 emissions, and [degrade?] the natural systems that supply the oxygen we breathe and food we eat to the ?verge of breakdown?, according to the Dasgupta Review on the economics of biodiversity. But we can choose the path to a safer and more livable future - if we choose to regenerate our relationship with nature and create nature-positive economies by 2030. To get there, we must accelerate the transformation of agriculture from a net source of CO2 emissions to a net sink. The benefits of this will ricochet across global efforts to meet the UN?s 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, such as eradicating poverty and hunger and creating jobs, according to the Stockholm Resilience Centre. The most straightforward and cost-effective way to do this is to preserve, protect and restore natural environments where possible - keeping terrestrial natural carbon stocks intact - and to farm and graze in harmony with nature, without encroaching on natural areas. That has to happen as the population grows and incomes rise, pushing food demand up by an expected 50 percent, according to the World Resources Institute. The Leaders Breaking Ground The International Wineries for Climate Action recently joined the Race to Zero, with members aiming to halve their direct and indirect emissions by 2030 and become climate-positive by 2050. Other food and agriculture majors in the Race to Zero include France?s Danone, Switzerland?s Nestl? and Thailand?s Charoen Pokphand Group, through the Business Ambition for 1.5?C initiative. Now we?re urging food and agriculture leaders to push commitments for net zero and greater resilience to cover 20 percent of the industry - by 2023 - as part of our Race to Zero Breakthroughs challenge. Including goals for indirect supply chain emissions will multiply the impacts of this work. Sustainable agricultural practices, the end of deforestation for agriculture and the addition of carbon sinks can deliver greater profits for farmers and drive the shift to net-zero supply chains without significantly increasing costs. The Forest and Agriculture Commodity Trade Dialogue, a multi-stakeholder consultation in collaboration with the COP 26 Presidency , is also exploring synergies that would allow companies interested or committed to deforestation-free supply chains to advance their decarbonization by joining the Race to Zero. Commitments from farmers will drive this transformation further, and ensure they?re not left behind in the transition. The UK?s National Farmers Union aims to reach net zero emissions by 2040, while the US Farmers & Ranchers In Action estimates that the country?s food and agriculture sector can become carbon-negative as early as 2035. The World Farmers Organization is empowering farmers to lead in the political process by sharing their science-based, results-focused solutions for mitigating emissions and adapting to climate change impacts they?re already feeling, like droughts and floods. Smallholders in particular must be involved, as they often face the worst impacts while producing the food most of us consume. Change from policymakers and financiers will help accelerate the transition. Governments can create a conducive business and regulatory environment, for example by exposing the hidden costs of extractive agriculture and redirecting US$600 billion per year in subsidies towards supporting work such as the Just Rural Transition initiative. Investors and capital markets can multiply their finance for climate-positive agriculture by 10 and create financial mechanisms for the food and agriculture transition. Regional Climate Action UN Climate Change kicked off its Regional Climate Weeks last week with virtual roundtables for Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean. Across the four regions, stakeholders pointed to the importance of efficiently engaging all actors in climate action - and especially youth and women; on the need for citizen- and community-led efforts to change behaviours in favour of more sustainable production and consumption; and on the importance of using nature-based solutions and ?bringing Earth back into the equation?. There's no other way to put it. New variants of the highly-contagious and deadly novel coronavirus are spreading throughout the United States, including Texas. More than half a million Americans are dead from COVID-19. We ought to be hunkering down and using evidence-based practices to beat this virus ? including physical distancing and masking up. Instead, Greg Abbott decided to open Texas wide up. Like, all the way up. In doing so, he's actively threatening his residents' lives. On Tuesday, March 2nd, Abbott announced that all businesses in the entire state are allowed to go back to "business as usual," including dangerous indoor operations like restaurants, bars, clubs, and gyms. Even more unbelievably, he simultaneously removed the mandate requiring residents to wear masks. Now, millions of people could end up fully maskless indoors, breathing each other's potentially infectious and virus-filled air. Yet Abbott is trying to blame immigrants for the spread of COVID-19, spewing xenophobic misinformation on Twitter. There's only one person responsible for any increase in COVID in Texas: Governor Greg Abbott. Demand that the Texas state legislature save lives and bring back the mask mandate! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. One reckless man could be responsible for increasing the spread of COVID-19 in Texas. The world's richest countries have already snatched up most of the global supply of Covid vaccines -- enough to vaccinate their entire populations many times over. Meanwhile, only 1 in 10 people in the poorest nations is expected to get a Covid-19 vaccine this year. It's not just unfair -- but also incredibly dangerous if we allow the virus to spread around the world, mutating into new, potentially vaccine-resistant variants. This lethal scarcity serves the profits of big pharmaceutical giants. By applying patents and keeping the technology secret, they are blocking other manufacturers from producing the life-saving vaccines. But in hours, governments are meeting to discuss the global plan to suspend patents for Covid-19 vaccines. This is our opportunity to act! More than 100 nations are already on board -- and now if the European Union joins the global effort, we could help tip the balance and make the vaccines accessible to everyone, everywhere! Send your message to Ursula von der Leyen to ask her to stand on the right side of history this week -- and support the proposal to scrap the vaccine patents: Contact Ursula Von der Leyen President of the European Commission Last summer she promised a ?universal, common good? vaccine to be made available to every corner of the world, at affordable prices -- pointing that ?the European Union will not be safe until the entire world has access to a vaccine?. Let?s ask her to keep her promise, and support India and South Africa's proposal at the World Trade Organisation, to suspend patents for Covid vaccines! Comment Tweet Email Comment Nearly 1 million people, including yourself, Nobel laureates and scientists, have joined our voices to demand that vaccine technology and scientific knowledge are shared freely, to end this pandemic as soon as possible, for everyone! And it's happened before. In 2001, after years of public pressure, countries agreed to suspend patents on HIV/AIDS treatments, allowing affordable, generic versions to be made, saving millions of lives. Now we must do it again! So this week, Avaaz is going all out to amplify our voices, with opinion polls in key countries and media ads, ahead of the crucial meeting. But for our leaders to go against these powerful pharma giants, they also need to see a massive public push from citizens. So take a moment to join the global action today -- and ask Ursula von der Leyen to do the right thing for the people of Europe and the people of the world. Several options for its decarbonization are possible: increasing the efficiency of current production methods, recycling of steel, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen. Hydrogen as a solution to decarbonize industry has been receiving increasing amounts of attention. There are two ways in which hydrogen can be used in steel production: as an auxiliary reducing agent in the BF-BOF route (H2-BF) or as the sole reducing agent in a process known as direct reduction of iron or DRI (H2-DRI). This article will focus on H2-BF, while H2-DRI will be discussed in a future article. https://bellona.org/news/climate-change/2021-03-hydrogen-in-steel-production-what-is-happening-in-europe-part-one -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A vicious armed conflict of landmines and airstrikes has devastated the population, triggering a humanitarian crisis like no other. Yet while international government aid is dismally low, there are signs of hope. US president Biden is taking steps that could accelerate critical funding and fuel global efforts to end the war -- but it could come too late for many. We need an emergency response, now. As of December, 100,000 children under the age of five are so severely malnourished that they could die if they do not receive urgent treatment. Medics, volunteers, and humanitarian groups are trying to fill the gaps -- but they just don't have enough. We can help them do more, and if we all chip in now, we could: a.. Help fund critical medical facilities in devastated areas of Yemen; b.. Provide life-saving food aid for thousands of desperate families; c.. Ensure thousands of people have access to critical medicines and pay for a fleet of ambulances; d.. Fund mobile clinics and power medical centres with emergency generators. For just $2 we could help feed a child like Abdo for another day. It's heartbreaking that a child's life could hang on such a delicate thread; that's simply how dire the situation has become. Act. Grow. As a result of broad U.S. economic sanctions, countries such as Iran, Syria, Venezuela, North Korea, Sudan, and Zimbabwe struggle without adequate food, electricity, medicine, medical supplies, masks and respirators. Those who suffer most under sanctions include pregnant women, children, and the chronically ill. We need to urge the Biden administration to issue a worldwide temporary general license to allow all countries and locations sanctioned by the United States to be able to easily import all related medicines, medical supplies, and vaccines, to facilitate international relief efforts related to COVID-19. We've put together, with our allies, a petition that will be delivered to President Joe Biden; Vice President Kamala Harris; White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain; Sec. of State Antony Blinken; Sec. of Defense Lloyd Austin; Sec. of the Treasury Janet Yellen; and Sec. of Commerce Gina Raimondo. Click here to add your name! The U.S. Treasury Department has the power to issue a worldwide, temporary general license authorizing the exportation and re-exportation of medical supplies and equipment and other essential goods that might otherwise be prohibited by sanctions. The temporary general license would not require Congress to suspend or repeal sanctions and would only cover the listed types of supplies and equipment. By making it clear these types of financial transactions are allowable, this license would aid in the donation or sale of items such as test kits, respirators, sanitizers, personal protective equipment, and medicine, which are all critical for preventing and treating COVID-19. U.S. economic sanctions technically exempt humanitarian items -- but banks, insurance companies, and other corporations are afraid that if they make loans, provide insurance for shipments, or send goods, the U.S. government will accuse them of violating the sanctions, levy hefty fines, and place them on a banned business list. An April 2020 Human Rights Watch report explained that sanctions have had a particularly detrimental effect on Iran?s healthcare system, as the country lacks access to critical medical equipment and medicine despite existing exemptions. UN Human Rights Commissioner Michele Bachelet echoed this point when she called for an easing of sanctions for COVID-19 relief. Past Republican and Democratic Party administrations have issued temporary general licenses after earthquakes in Iran. So, there is precedent for following through on this request. Sign Now In a democracy, one of the most important rights that every citizen has is the right ? not just a privilege ? to vote and select their elected representatives. Yet voter suppression is on the rise all across the United States, largely following the incredible increase in voter participation during the most recent presidential election. Lawmakers in more than half of U.S. states have introduced legislation to cut into voter turnout, trying to control future elections and prevent popular involvement. This is fundamentally anti-democratic and must not be allowed. The GOP is leading this anti-voter charge and, no surprise, they're targeting mostly Democratic-leaning constituents, specifically communities of color, students, the elderly, and low-income folks. Republicans are trying to justify this assault on voting access by promoting debunked falsehoods about fraud ? lies that experts and multiple U.S. courts have disproven time and again. That's why it's so important for Congress to pass federal legislation to increase election accessibility, transparency, and security. The For The People Act would do just that. The For The People Act would create a national voter registration program, make Election Day a national holiday, and fix gerrymandering and voter roll purges. It includes campaign finance reform, limits foreign lobbying, and requires secretive "superPACS" to disclose their donors. It even includes support for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. It's already passed the U.S. House of Representatives; now we just need Senators to stand up and do their jobs. Voting belongs in the hands of the people. The GOP must not be allowed to strip this sacred right away. Sign the petition to demand that the U.S. Senate protect voter rights by passing the For The People Act! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Message-ID: <02A2A7BA5C4F4D0EAC9891EE927DC6B2@lewpostnew> UN Climate Change ?Global Climate Action 16 March 2021 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter We Won't Get To Zero Without Resilience The race to zero emissions may be gaining steam, but the climate crisis is already hitting rural and coastal communities, agribusinesses, smallholder farmers and others across the developing and developed worlds. If we want to create a healthier, cleaner, more liveable world with no more than 1.5?C of warming, we need to race to greater resilience at the same time. Floods, droughts, extreme heat, wildfires and other impacts are affecting communities, businesses and livelihoods around the world. But the effects differ from place to place. They are local, and they require local solutions that enable people to live, work and thrive in spite of the growing challenges. This is why we?ve launched the Race to Resilience, a campaign that will catalyze action from the private sector and local governments to enhance the resilience of 4 billion people who are most at risk from the climate crisis by 2030. As a sibling to the Race to Zero, the Race to Resilience will deliver a step change in global ambition across urban, rural, coastal and oceanic resilience, while advancing the principles of locally-led adaptation already supported by more than 40 organizations. The people living and working in impacted communities understand best how to build their own resilience. Yet, they rarely have a voice in the decisions that affect them. Under the locally-led adaptation principles, decisions are devolved to the lowest appropriate level, structural inequalities are addressed, and the focus is on investing in local capabilities that will create an institutional legacy of work and expertise. Building resilience is not just the right thing to do - it?s the smart thing, too. According to the Global Commission on Adaptation, investing US$1.8 trillion this decade in developing early warning systems, climate resilient infrastructure, improved dryland agriculture crop production, mangrove protection and resilient water resources could generate $7.1 trillion worth of net benefits. For example, spending $800 million on early warning systems for storms or heat waves in developing countries could help avoid $3-16 billion in damage every year. Protecting mangroves helps avoid $80 billion per year in losses from coastal flooding and protects fisheries, forestries, tourism and other industries and livelihoods. Such investments could strengthen the world?s economic recovery from Covid-19, creating jobs and bolstering public health. Yet stimulus spending so far still favours carbon-emitting measures over green initiatives by four-to-one, the Global Commission on Adaptation cautioned. The Race to a Resilient COP 26 The run-up to November?s COP26 summit in Glasgow offers the opportunity to spread the focus from just cutting emissions to building resilience as well as mitigating the crisis. It?s an opportunity to meet UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres? call for half of all climate finance to be spent on resilience and adaptation. To meet escalating risks, global adaptation funding should reach around US$300 billion per year in 2030 and $500 billion 2050, but it was still around $70 billion 2020, according to the UN Environment Programme. The Race to Resilience will work to support the UK government?s effort to turn political commitments made through the UN?s Call for Action Adaptation and Resilience into on-the-ground support for vulnerable communities. As the COP26 presidency, the UK launched the Adaptation Action Coalition in January alongside Egypt, Bangladesh, Malawi, the Netherlands, Saint Lucia and the UN. We will announce the first set of Race to Resilience partner initiatives on 30 March, just ahead of the UK?s Global Summit on Climate and Development on 31 March. At the same time, we will unveil a diverse line-up of Race to Resilience ambassadors who will be tasked with mobilizing more members and amplifying their work. But we?re still looking for more resilience initiatives to join the campaign, more members to join the initiatives and more ambition from all the private sector and local government actors who can drive greater national ambition ahead of the COP. ? ?Join us! The virtual Hopin platform facilitates an interactive conference experience complete with one-on-one and small group networking, virtual expo booths, breakout sessions, main stage panel presentations, and more. Get your tickets to join World BEYOND War for this exciting event! The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to re-think what global conferences can look like. We've traded in long carbon-intensive flights and pricey hotel rooms for an online experience that allows us to network with activists around the world and bring international experts into one virtual space. We've broadened the conference theme from a narrow focus on CANSEC (North America's largest weapons expo hosted in Ottawa each year) to examining the broader supply chain, from weapons expos to war zones around the world. And we've added in speakers from a diversity of perspectives, to capture global viewpoints on the war machine's impact. #NoWar2021 goes beyond a typical webinar format. Through the Hopin platform, we can create a more well-rounded conference experience that includes panel presentations on the main stage, workshops, skills trainings, and one-on-one and small group networking. You can browse the expo booths and talk live with sponsoring organizations; set up your own private chats with other attendees; pop in and out of breakout sessions and even create your own. Many of us feel like Zoom pros now, but we wanted to go beyond Zoom for #NoWar2021 to enrich the experience of a virtual event. Unlike Zoom, Hopin doesn't require any apps or downloads. It's an in-browser experience best on Chrome or Firefox on desktop. We'll send out a how-to guide in advance of the event, and have volunteers on standby at our Help Desk booth to assist with any tech issues during the live event. #NoWar2021 will be unlike any conference we?ve hosted before. Check out the conference website for the full schedule of events and speakers? bios. P.S. We?re also excited to announce the details for the #NoWar2021 sponsorship tiers! Check out the sponsorship page for perks like booking ad space in the program, reserving a virtual expo booth, and more. But because of how the EU defines "clean" air, we think our air is clean when it isn't. Next week, the EU Parliament will talk about this and it could be a game-changer. SIGN NOW Hi, In one of the schools in Warsaw, there is a big red dot on a board next to the entrance. It tells the kids whether they can play outdoors. On many days they don?t: the air is so polluted that playing outside is too much of a health risk. Air pollution causes asthma, childhood cancers, and chronic diseases in children. [1] And it leads to hundreds of thousands of deaths in Europe every year. [2] The EU has standards for air quality that are meant to protect us. But because they aren?t 100% based on science, the alarm levels are set far too high. [2] This makes us think our air is clean when it is not. Next week, the EU Parliament will discuss how to review air quality standards. And whatever they decide could be a serious game-changer for the air we breathe. [3] Before the vote, MEPs who don?t know about the issue will have to learn about it, and those on the fence will need convincing. To do it, we have to put our names together to show how many Europeans care about the air they breathe. Add yours now! Sign now for cleaner air It is really simple: if the air is polluted, it is not safe. [4] But over a decade ago, the alarm levels of pollution were set much higher than suggested by science. So ?officially? most people in Europe are breathing acceptable air, and politicians don?t have to do anything to protect our health. However, if we use the World Health Organisation?s definition of clean air, the picture changes abruptly: 75% of people living in cities across the EU breathe health-threatening air. [5] We have to show the EU Parliament and the politicians in all EU institutions that we know about the air we breathe and that we won't turn a blind eye to it. Right now, we have a chance to let all children breathe safely. We can make our cities green and our air fresh. Sign and ask the EU for better air quality in Europe. Sign now For the health of the kids, David (London), Marta (Warsaw) and the entire WeMove team PS: Air pollution is not only dangerous for kids, but is a huge risk to us all. The ENPARD?s rural development projects, implemented by the Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN) in Keda and Caritas Czech Republic in Khulo since 2017, helped mobilize local communities and initiate various social and economic actions to improve lives in rural Adjara. The results and achievements of the four-year work of ?Keda Leader? and ?ENPARD Khulo? projects were summarised at a joint closure event organized in the municipality of Keda in Februrary. The event was officially opened by Mr. Giorgi Surmanidze, Minister of Agriculture of Adjara AR, Ms. Ketevan Khutsishvili, Project Officer of Rural Development Programme, Delegation of the European Union to Georgia, Mr. Levan Gorgiladze, the Mayor of Keda Municipality, Ms. Nana Janashia, Executive Director of Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN) and Mr. Jan Blinka, Head of Mission of Caritas Czech Republic in Georgia. The speakers introduced key highlights of the EU-supported rural development projects in Adjara, role of the Local Action Groups (LAGs) in community mobilisation and empowerment, implementation of successful local development initiatives and future plans. ?I?m happy to be in Adjara and have this wonderful opportunity to see the results of the four-year work of Keda and Khulo Local Action Groups. We have supported these LAGs to work closely with the government, civil society and private sectors, define local needs and engage communities in development actions. The greatest achievement for us is to see many successful local initiatives, but most importantly, increased confidence of rural population in better future. We believe that the local communities will build on this and continue cooperation for stronger and more sustainable local development,? stated Ketevan Khutsishvili, Project Officer of Rural Development Programme, Delegation of the European Union to Georgia. ?The Keda LEADER project has been successful in promoting inclusive rural growth and improving the well-being of rural communities via the implementation of innovative approaches that generate diverse employment opportunities, promote climate smart practices, develop integrated natural resource management, and protect the environment. Over 90 local businesses and entrepreneurs have been supported in Keda that are already operating successfully. We are glad to have supported environmentally friendly and climate resilient actions and initiatives such as youth empowerment, eco-tourism, green energy, and agro-tourism,? ? said Nana Janashia, CENN Executive Director. "ENPARD Khulo project brought significant improvement in business environment, employment, and overall quality of live in Khulo municipality. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 pandemic, our project contributed to the development of over 60 businesses initiatives creating more than 300 jobs, as well as mobilized and empowered hundreds of local citizens, including youth, women and persons with disabilities. It has been a great pleasure to experience such positive development!" ? stated Jan Blinka, Head of Mission, Caritas Czech Republic in Georgia. Key achievements of the projects are the establishment of Local Action Groups (LAGs) in Keda and Khulo municipalities. The LAGs have mobilized local communities, brought together civil society, private and public sector representatives and designed local development strategies to meet the local priorities and needs. The EU supported total of 170 development initiatives (97 in Keda and 73 initiatives in Khulo) and helped create over 500 new jobs through the LAGs in both municipalities. These initiatives promote local entrepreneurship and diversification of economic and social activities in various areas, including agriculture, tourism, infrastructure development, education, environment, municipal services, etc. To find out more about local enterprises and initiatives supported by the Keda LEADER project, the project developed Project Catalogue, which can be found on the following link: http://environment.cenn.org/reg-dev-csa/publications/keda-leader-project-catalogue/ After the event, the guest visited several EU-supported rural development initiatives in Keda municipality ? family hotel and winery of Chateau Iveri, and a public school in the town of Keda, where the representatives of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Adjara Autonomous Republic, CENN, Democratic Institute and Keda LAG signed the Memorandum of Understanding to support the improvement of energy supply through energy efficiency technologies in 66 public schools of Keda municipality. The school is also a grant winner of the Keda LEADER project, as part of which a modern study space was set up within the school. The space was equipped with modern technologies and furniture and aims to create a shared space for pupils where they can develop various skills. The project ?Optimising the Potential of Local Assets for Rural Development of Keda Municipality? (Keda Leader), is implemented with the financial support of the EU by CENN in partnership with the Center for Strategic Research and Development of Georgia (CSRDG), Institute of Democracy (IoD) and the Austrian Institute for Regional Studies and Spatial Planning (?IR). The Project ?Promotion of Rural Development and Diversification in Khulo Municipality? (ENPARD Khulo) is implemented with the financial support of the EU by Caritas Czech Republic in partnership with Croatian non-governmental organization HMRR and PMC Research Center. The EU is supporting agriculture and rural development in Georgia through its ENPARD Programme. Take the Poll Freedom House released their annual Freedom in the World Report which detailed a huge drop in human freedoms and civil liberties around the world. Authoritarian regimes benefitted from the COVID-19 pandemic by oppressive freedom of speech, assembly and representation. Freedom of personal expression faced its biggest decline since 2012 as authoritarians cut off access to many social media platforms under the guise of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also outlined the weakening of press freedom as media outlets around the world were restricted and forced to compete with an unprecedented amount of misinformation. This has led to a global decline in public trust of the media ? a core tenant of democracy. This Monday our partners will dress up as screaming vegetables in Munich to protest outside of the European Patent Office, right before their official meeting. They will be delivering our demand to stop companies from undoing our win. Companies like Bayer-Monsanto and Carlsberg are currently using legal loopholes in patent law to register new patents on our fruits, vegetables, and seeds (like barley or melons). 144,491 have already signed from the WeMove Europe community and others like ours. [1] But we want to get to 200,000 for the protest on Monday. Will you add your name? We?ll update ASAP you on our protest! Sign now! Free the seeds! Save the future of our food. Our partners "No Patents on Seeds" recently protested in front of the German Ministry of Justice and will soon bring their screaming vegetables in protest in front of the EPO?s office in Munich right before their important meeting. [1] Partners include No Patents on Seeds and Umweltinstitut Munchen e.V. In case you missed it, the original email is below the divider: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Together we got the European Patent Office (EPO) to stop patents on all plant seeds so that they belong to all of us and cannot be owned for profit. But corporations found a loophole that would cancel our win. The EPO meets next week, act now to ask them to scrap this loophole. SIGN NOW Hi, No one should be able to own the exclusive right to grow and sell fruits and vegetables. It sounds obvious but this is what we fought to prevent for over four years. And we won. Last year, the European Patent Office (EPO) officially accepted that conventionally bred plants are not patentable. [1] But companies like Bayer-Monsanto, DowDupont, Heineken and Carlsberg have found ways to undo that win by finding legal loopholes to register new patents on melons or barley. [2] What they are doing is pretty sneaky: it?s called ?technical topping? and it?s a way to exploit the loopholes introduced by the EPO. [3] While patents on conventionally bred plants are prohibited, patents on breeding by means of genetic engineering, including new methods such as genome editing can be patented. [4] Now companies can try to blur the distinction between conventional breeding and genetic engineering. In practice, this means that seeds to make beer or melons can still be claimed as an invention. We already got the EPO to listen to us through a huge petition, filing thousands of complaints against a patent on tomatoes, and a protest in Munich at the Oktoberfest beer festival. [5] As the EPO meets next week, it?s time to remind them that we?re still here and we won?t allow them to cancel our win. Right before they meet, our partners will dress up as screaming vegetables (see photo below) in front of EPO?s office in Munich and hand over our signatures. Free the seeds! Save the future of our food Patents create monopolies: fruits, vegetables and seeds claimed in patents cannot be used by other farmers for further breeding without the permission of the patent holder. This means that a handful of large corporations get far-reaching control over our daily food production - they can decide what we eat, what farmers produce, what retailers sell and how much we all have to pay for it. Our partners "No Patents on Seeds" recently protested in front of the German Ministry of Justice and will soon bring their screaming vegetables in protest in front of the EPO?s office in Munich. If these patents are not stopped, small farmers will become more and more dependent on big companies that can control access to seeds for further breeding. The EPO needs to take action as soon as possible, before the likes of Bayer-Monsanto and DowDupont own the exclusive rights to fruits, vegetables and seeds. Let?s make sure the EPO stands strong, and does not allow any more patents on seeds until they close these loopholes. No more patents on seeds! After more than four years of campaigning to stop patents on seeds, our efforts put an end to years of complete legal absurdity and chaotic decision-making at the EPO. The crisis caused by the COVID_19 pandemic has posed many new challenges to the world. As a result, the so-called ?Green Recovery? initiatives have become very popular, in response to which a GreenOvation (Green Innovation Challenge) idea competition is being organized in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan under the Ecoserve programme. The competition aims to identify the difficulties and ways to deal with them, which would mitigate the current crisis and find a green and innovative solution to a particular challenge. In line with the scope of ?Ecoserve?, we would like to focus more on environmental issues like Environmental education and awareness, Value chains for the use of forests and forest resources - timber, residues, eco-tourism, non-timber forest products, etc. The competition consists of several stages: (1) In the first stage, the challenges submitted by the contestants will be collected and evaluated. (2) consequently, there will be another call for the ?GreenOvative? solutions to respond to the selected challenges, and (3) the final stage is the pitch and award ceremony. Each participant country (GE, AZ AM) will have one winner who will be awarded the financial prize provided by Ecoserve. The ideas will be submitted to the web portal https://greenovation.hypeinnovation.com/ that will be launched from March 23 and will be publicly available. Who can participate? ? Anyone be it a natural person or an organization individually or as a team. Information on Greenovation can be found either on the Website or interested persons can contact our Facebook page https://cutt.ly/Pz3s469 in your local language (GE, AZ, AM, EN). Please keep an eye on our pages from March 23 and let us know what your field of interest is and/or what is more relevant for you and your community to smoothly recover and restart the life. March 22 is World Water Day, which has been celebrated under the United Nations initiative since 1993 to raise awareness of the importance of water resources and the crisis of access to water. This year, special attention will be paid to supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for all by 2030. " This year the theme of World Water Day 2021 is valuing water. Water means different things to different people. This conversation is about what water means to you. How is water important to your home and family life, your livelihood, your cultural practices, your wellbeing, your local environment? a.. In households, schools, and workplaces, water can mean health, hygiene, dignity, and productivity; b.. In cultural, religious, and spiritual places, water can mean a connection with the creation, community, and oneself; c.. In natural spaces, water can mean peace, harmony, and preservation. Today, water is under extreme threat from a growing population, increasing demands of agriculture and industry, and the worsening impacts of climate change. Let?s celebrate World Water Day by recording ? all the different ways water benefits our lives, we can value water properly and safeguard it effectively for everyone. We?re fighting back ? but we need you with us. Donate $5 or more now to help us mobilize more grassroots leaders to take bold climate action for our planet. Last month?s winter storms in Texas and across the central and southern United States were devastating. Millions were left without heat or power as temperatures hit record lows. Homes flooded as frozen pipes burst. Weather has always fluctuated. We know that. But winters around the world are changing. The climate crisis has made deadly weather-related disasters more and more common, and they?ll only continue to worsen ? in both numbers and severity ? unless we take action now. This is our moment to act. Vladimir, we need you. We just set a rapid-response goal to raise $10,000 by midnight tonight so we can mobilize more climate activists in more places to fight for the big-picture change we need ? and we?re counting on you to help us get there. Together, we can take bold climate action to address this crisis. But it?s going to take every single one of us. Please, will you donate right now to help build a more sustainable future for our planet and everyone on it? DONATE NOW This is the fight of our lives, Vladimir. Over three billion people around the world depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. And for countries like the Congo, fisheries are vital to the food security of local communities. And it isn't just the giant commercial trawlers. Loango Bay has also been the focus of massive oil exploration -- a possible oil spill could spell disaster for the many endangered species who call these magical waters home. A Marine Protected Area of this size would allow fish stocks to recover and help the local fishermen currently locked in a battle of unequals. If enough of us donate, we could: a.. Help designate a 165,000-acre critical habitat into a Marine Protected Area; b.. Support the creation of a spatial plan that would stop commercial fisheries; c.. Protect community fishing rights by establishing no-take zones; d.. Ensure that the MPA is effectively patrolled and that fines for illegal activities are channeled into protection measures. And if we raise more, we?ll scope and support other critically endangered habitats and species needing urgent protection, while adding our campaigning firepower to fight for all life on Earth: ?6 to protect 1 acre ?11 to protect 2 acres ?21 to protect 4 acres ?41 to protect 8 acres ?51 to protect 10 acres OTHER AMOUNT From championing a global deal for nature that would protect half of the Earth, to working with indigenous communities to defend their lands -- our movement has stood at the forefront of the fight to safeguard critical ecosystems so our planet can thrive again. And if we raise more, we?ll scope and support other critically endangered habitats and species needing urgent protection, while adding our campaigning firepower to fight for all life on Earth: $2 to protect 15000 sq ft $3 to protect 22000 sq ft $4 to protect 30000 sq ft $5 to protect 38000 sq ft $8 to protect 60000 sq ft OTHER AMOUNT From championing a global deal for nature that would protect half of the Earth, to working with indigenous communities to defend their lands -- our movement has stood at the forefront of the fight to safeguard critical ecosystems so our planet can thrive again. Message-ID: <66A682C6E4C644419A138C5815B42A89@evol.sp.ru> The Indigenous People of the Amazon are under attack! Brazilian President Bolsonaro wants to open up some of the most fragile rainforest to predatory mining companies. Let?s pressure the Brazilian Congress to vote down Bolsonaro?s plan and protect the Amazon! Sign the petition Bolsonaro says it?s his ?dream? to open up the Amazon rainforest for mining but for the Indigenous People who call it their home, it?s a nightmare. Ripping up the land to mine for gold and diamonds will devastate the precious ecosystems and the Indigenous communities who have protected these sacred lands for years. Bolsonaro wants to rush his plan through a vote in Congress in the next few weeks, so we have to act fast. If we can show Brazil?s politicians that the whole world is watching as they?re deciding the Amazon?s fate, we can stop this senseless destruction. Add your name and show them that there is massive public opposition to this plan. Join the call: Stop Bolsonaro?s Amazon nightmare! Thirty years ago Brazil?s constitution put these Indigenous lands out of bounds. But ever since Bolsonaro came to power, mining giants and small-time prospectors have been clamoring to get their hands on the Amazon?s treasures. Unless we stand-up and stop Bolsonaro?s plan, this could be their golden ticket. This attack on these Indigenous Peoples? lands is an attack on all of us. Our survival depends on the Amazon rainforest, and the Indigenous People that nurture it. Now those fighting on the frontlines, like our allies at the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil and the Pariri Indigenous Association need our help. Message-ID: Stop the sale of endangered sharks in the US! This man packed seven sharks in a small backyard pool, hoping to make big money Sign Now Vladimir, Wild animals do not deserve to be turned into pets, play things, food, trophies, or trinkets ? and that includes sharks. Yet Joshua Seguine of New York state decided to hold seven sandbar sharks, a protected species, captive in his home's small pool. Why? Because he wanted to make a boatload of money off of the poor creatures by selling them off, one by one. Authorities also found several dead sharks on his property, including the snout of one endangered shark. This all happened in large part because selling sharks is extremely lucrative in the United States ? and in many places, is still legal. This wasn't the man's first run-in with sharks. Four years ago in 2017, he was arrested for locking five sharks in a small tank, which he then strapped to the back of his truck. He was found actively driving around in the state of Georgia while these flustered and disoriented sharks were sloshing about, totally terrified, in the rear of his vehicle. The main reasons people seek out these particular animals is to turn them into leather, oil, and meals. But cruelty like that should not be allowed. Sign the petition and urge the U.S. Congress to ban the sale of sharks in the United States! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Sign Now As a parting gift, Trump intentionally kneecapped the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which includes the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These agencies have obviously been extremely focused on fighting COVID-19 and Trump saw that as a perfect way to sneak in a rule called the SUNSET rule that forces them to do significant amounts of busy work just to keep basic health and safety regulations alive. Sign the petition and demand that Congress use the Congressional Review Act to throw out this last-minute rule from the Trump administration! The SUNSET rule dictates that any rule or regulation under the umbrella of HHS that is over 10 years old must be reviewed within the next 5 years. That's 12,400 different regulations, each extremely important. It sounds like a good thing until you realize it's not possible for these agencies on their budgets to get through this kind of review and the result will be hundreds, if not thousands, of critical health and safety regulations that get tossed out and expose people to danger! Some of the regulations at stake are laws like HIPAA, which keeps your personal health information private, or certain food standards that mean we aren't drinking or eating poison like arsenic. Health officials are calling this SUNSET rule a "ticking time bomb." We need to ask Congress to stop it before it's too late! Thank you, Kelsey The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Message-ID: <6D35D41A3C0545258788289D2A363077@evol.sp.ru> Virginia just outlawed the sale of cosmetics tested on animals, but 46 other states still allow it! Sign Now Amazing news for animal lovers: Virginia recently passed a law that bans the sale of any cosmetics that have been recently tested on animals! But shockingly, it is only the fourth state to do so, behind Illinois, California, and Nevada. That means 46 states and Washington D.C. still support animal testing for cosmetics, which is cruel and inhumane, not to mention wholly unnecessary. We now have plenty of alternative ways to test cosmetics' safety that don't involve injecting animals with potentially toxic materials, putting those materials in their eyes and on their skin, forcing poisons down their throats, and countless other cruelties. Bunnies, guinea pigs, mice, and even dogs, all popularly used for testing in the cosmetics industry, live their entire lives in cramped cages. Without proper socialization, nurturing, or exercise, their lives are total misery. Their bodies are used like disposable props, burned and poisoned to test the limits of the chemicals used in our makeup, shampoos, and lotions. Between the wide breadth of chemicals already tested and approved, and technologies that allow us to test new ones in humane ways, there is absolutely no reason this should still be going on. We must put the pressure on companies at the national level ? prioritize animal welfare, or go out of business. Will you sign the petition asking for federal legislation to ban the sale of cosmetics tested on animals in the U.S.? Thank you, Lauren The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Between the wide array of already tested and approved materials, and new testing methods that don't involve animals, there is no reason the cosmetics industry should be torturing defenseless creatures. Message-ID: Norway is encouraging the mass slaughter of minke whales, with a killing quota almost three times the number killed last year! Sign Now The 2021 whaling season in Norway is quickly approaching, and the whaling industry is out for blood ? specifically, minke whale blood. This year's killing quota is a whopping 1,278 minke whales! Last year, less than half of that amount of whales were killed, which is in line with the downward trend in whale product demand in Norway, the increasing public distaste for the cruel practice of whaling, and decreased participation from fisheries. The Norwegian government should be embracing this trend; instead, they are trying to reverse it by keeping killing quotas high and loosening regulations that are meant to protect the welfare of these poor whales! The slaughter of a wild minke whale is a terrible thing to behold. Whalers onboard their vessels aim a harpoon at a moving, fleeing, terrified whale, which is meant to kill the animal on the spot. But more often than not, it takes a long time for these whales to die. The huge mammals are incapacitated, left to slowly die in immense pain either from bleeding out or not being able to rise to the surface for the life-giving air they need. Norway is one of only three countries that still allow the brutality of commercial whaling. It's time to catch up to the rest of the world and put an end to it! Sign the petition and demand that Norway drastically lower its minke whale murder quota for 2021, and use this as the first step to phasing out whaling entirely! Thank you, Lauren The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Why is Norway clinging on to the antiquated and cruel practice of commercial whaling? Call for real climate ambition: According to the latest climate science, we have less than 10 years to avert climate chaos and keep temperature rise below 1.5?C. Beyond that: drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty will be the future for hundreds of millions of people. b.. Highlight the shortcomings: the IEA says it wants to shape a safe energy future for all, but for years, its main report has consistently underestimated the growth of renewables and overestimated the need for fossil fuels. c.. Point out how they are putting the Paris Agreement at risk: All IEA member states have signed the Paris agreement. But instead of putting central focus on the roadmap for the clean energy transition we need, the IEA is slowing us down. d.. Use your own words, and don't forget to use Birol's and the agency?s Twitter handles: @fbirol and @IEA. We're also actively destroying our own economy and our future as well. That's what makes it so jarring that the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, is gleefully and aggressively deforesting the Amazon rainforest. Bolsonaro isn't just a climate change denier. He's also trying to convince the Brazilian people that his horrific deforestation plans are meant to help the economy. As the rainforest burns at higher and higher rates, he refuses to listen to science or reason. And he couldn't be more wrong. Bolsonaro is actually hurting both the global climate and his own people. Economic studies show that Brazil could lose $8.2 billion annually once the Amazon is completely destroyed. Not only would deforestation destroy animal habitat, it would also hurt farmers, make long-term logging more expensive, and would destroy one of the world's most important carbon sinks. Add your name to the petition calling on the Brazilian government to protect our world and the Brazilian economy, and stop deforestation of the Amazon! Thank you, Lauren The Care2 Petitions Team P.S.
