That?s why we are coming together today for a Day of Action against the burning of trees. Share a picture of you with a #StopFakeRenewables sign (in front of a tree if possible) on Twitter! Send an email with your picture to Frans Timmermans (frans-timmermans-contact at ec.europa.eu) and Ursula von der Leyen (ec.president.vdl at ec.europa.eu). Hi, You have made the Finnish Environment Minister and the European Commission nervous. They thought passing a law to make the industrial burning of forests legal would be easy. And alone, they may have been able to ignore you. But people power is working. There are 240,000 of us with you, and when thousands of us use our voices together, we make a difference. Finland is the main country pushing to burn forests and call it renewable energy. Thanks to our actions, we got the Finnish Environment Minister to speak out against her government. [1] We met with the European Commission to deliver the petition, but they still seem to be bowing down to the logging lobby. They will decide in the next few days whether they protect or keep burning trees. [2] But to win, we need to continue to pile on the same pressure that forced the Finnish Environment Minister to change her position. Here's how: today, we are joining a European-wide day of action against the mass burning of trees for energy. We?ll be sharing pictures directly with the Commission, and will be joined by people from 130 organisations from all over Europe. Greta Thunberg already shared our message on social media. [3] So start drawing! Share your voice on Twitter ? it can make all the difference Not on twitter? You can contact European leaders directly! Send an email with your picture to Frans Timmermans (frans-timmermans-contact at ec.europa.eu) and Ursula von der Leyen (ec.president.vdl at ec.europa.eu). How to take action: 1.. Make your own sign saying ?#StopFakeRenewables? ? you can use pencils, markers, cardboard, fabric, or keep it super simple? anything you want! 2.. Take a photo with your sign that says #stopfakerenewables. If possible do it in front of your favourite tree(s) or the closest one you can get to. 3.. Click the button below to send a message and a photo of you holding the sign to President von der Leyen on Twitter. When you click the button below the twitter share tool will come up with a pre-written tweet. Click the tweet button, and you will be taken to your Twitter page. Then, just click the icon at the bottom left corner to add your image. (If you don?t have time to take a picture and add it to your tweet, just send the tweet without it) Click to share your sign on Twitter Not on twitter? You can contact European leaders directly! Send an email with your picture to Frans Timmermans (frans-timmermans-contact at ec.europa.eu) and Ursula von der Leyen (ec.president.vdl at ec.europa.eu). The Commission will decide in the next few days. It?s our chance to tell our leaders that we want to protect our forests, not burn them. Our online action will be accompanied by actions from partners happening on the streets in at least 9 cities: Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn. Please join us and send a tweet or email! Thank you, David (London), Annemarie (Berlin) and the entire WeMove team References: [1] Krista Mikkonen, the Finnish Environment minister reacted in a tweet to our action https://twitter.com/MikkonenKrista/status/1399389520865468417?s=20 [2] European leaders will present what counts as ?renewable energy? in a proposal for a new Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). It will be presented by the Commission on July 14th ? so far, burning of forests is still included. Right now, nearly ?7 billion per year are being spent on subsidizing the burning of wood in Europe. https://www.climatechangenews.com/2021/02/11/time-end-subsidies-burning-wood-forests/ The Renewable Energy Directive itself is causing a great deal of harm, as it was one of the first pieces of legislation to define wood burning as carbon neutral and encouraged it as a means of generating heat and electricity. Message-ID: <907C4A4FC01B4360AD61DE16C50BA655@evol.sp.ru> UN Climate Change ?Global Climate Action 6 July 2021 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter Net Zero: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly The term ?net zero? has broken into the mainstream lexicon in the past two years, thanks to the tidal wave of commitments from countries, local governments, businesses and investors - many as part of their recovery from Covid-19. We have reached a tipping point at which, if you?re not readying your city, investment portfolio or business strategy for a resilient net-zero world in the 2040s, you will soon find yourself juggling stranded assets and battling ever-worsening impacts. But not all net zero commitments are equal. Some are good, some are bad, and some are even ugly, according to panelists speaking at the Get Net Zero Right event during London Climate Action Week. The risk is that net zero targets allows emitters to continue with business as usual based on the promise that they will mitigate emissions later on - a ?burn now, pay later? trap, according to James Dyke, assistant director at the University of Exeter?s Global Systems Institute. Much of the talk around reaching net zero emissions is based on ?fantasies of future technological saviour,? Dyke added, arguing that the window for limiting global warming to 1.5?C has closed. ?I would have some confidence that we were going to get to 1.5?C if at the same time that we?re making all these promises we?re seeing large near-term reductions in carbon emissions.? Instead, 2021 is on track to see the second-largest increase in emissions on record, he said. Yet, commitments to reaching net zero emissions are still a necessary and crucial part of the race to create a healthier, more resilient and more liveable future, panelists agreed. It?s a logical approach: set the end destination, and then figure out how to get there, said Richard Black, honorary research fellow at Imperial College London. ?I don?t agree with James that 1.5?C is over,? he said. ?We are at a time of maximum urgency but also a time of maximum feasibility.? The challenge is to turn net zero commitments into immediate, meaningful change that is rooted in science. ?We are now in a power fight for whether net-zero can be a driver of change or if it?s going to be captured by the fossil fuels industry and others to keep on doing what they?re doing,? said Jennifer Morgan, executive director of Greenpeace International. The clearest and fastest way to cut emissions is to phase down coal, oil and gas production, said Tzeporah Berman, adjunct professor of environmental studies at York University, international programme director at Stand.Earth and chair of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. Some 80 per cent of emissions in the atmosphere come from coal, oil and gas, and production needs to decline by at least 6 per cent per year to meet the Paris Agreement?s goals, she added. So Let's Get Net Zero Right ?How do we build political power to achieve positive change in the world? Winning is easy, but governing is harder,? said Thomas Hale, associate professor in public policy at the University of Oxford?s Blavatnik School of Government. The success of net zero commitments hinges on the right governance. And the right governance needs to be rooted in immediate action, short-term targets, transparency and accountability. The UN-backed Race to Zero campaign aims to do just that - backing net-zero commitments from businesses, investors, cities and regions with targets to halve greenhouse gas emissions between 2020 and 2030, as the science says is needed. It also requires commitments to cover a company or government?s direct and indirect emissions - spreading beyond its own operations to the entire value chain - and to prioritise real emissions cuts over offsets. At present, it does not include a route for oil and gas companies to join the campaign, because the race to zero is a race away from fossil fuels. In parallel, the UN-backed Race to Resilience is mobilising businesses, investors, cities and regions behind commitments to build resilience for the 4 billion people most at risk from the climate crisis by 2030. It?s developing metrics to evaluate a credible, robust commitment to resilience and measure progress - thereby ensuring that we cut emissions while adapting to the impacts we?re already feeling. This show of action from local governments and the private sector is fuelling an ambition loop: the more ambition they show, the easier it is for policymakers to be bolder, and the more space that creates for non-state actors to go farther. Ultimately, the quality of a net zero target depends on what it achieves. ?Fighting climate change helps us create a better world,? said Farhana Yamin, lawyer, author, activist and expert adviser for the Climate Vulnerable Forum. Asia-Pacific Climate Week Government, private sector and civil society leaders from Asia-Pacific are coming together from Tuesday to Friday to discuss climate action solutions and ways to incorporate them into the Covid-19 recovery, as one of UN Climate Change?s regional meetings ahead of COP26, hosted by the Government of Japan. The virtual thematic sessions will focus on three main tracks: national actions and economy-wide approaches; integrated approaches for climate-resilient development; and seizing transformation opportunities. The High-Level Champions? line-up of events includes a session by Japan?s Ministry of Environment and ICLEI on Tuesday on promoting zero carbon cities, expanding the ?Decarbonization Domino Effect? globally, and how to effectively collaborate with the Race to Zero campaign. On Wednesday there?s the High-Level Champions? Implementation Lab, looking at accelerating the establishment of net-zero, resilient cement and steel plants and increasing the climate resilience of smallholder farmers with smart-agriculture innovations. And on Thursday there?s a deep-dive on unlocking the potential of green hydrogen in collaboration with the Technology Executive Committee, Race to Resilience events on protecting the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people by creating climate resilient dwellings and water supplies and the launch a cities track, and a Climate Ambition Alliance event on Friday on developing long-term strategies to net-zero in alignment with Nationally Determined Contributions. Message-ID: <1E239FEFA9B840F6BA92C72B789676A3@evol.sp.ru> Hi, It?s official - the EU will phase out cages in animal farming across Europe by 2027. [1] This is big news. Vladimir, it means that together we?ve improved conditions for millions of farm animals. By backing the move to stop the use of cages, the EU has listened to the voices of 1.4 million EU citizens who spoke up for change. [2] It wasn?t certain they?d introduce these measures, but in the end the public outcry and the tireless work led by our partners was too much for them to ignore. This is people-power in action. Today, hundreds of millions of animals in Europe spend most of their lives in a cage, sometimes from birth until death. [3] As a community, this is an issue we know well. We?ve been taking action on it together for years. [4] Today?s success is a result of the European Citizens? Initiative (ECI) to End the Cage Age run by an incredible coalition of partners. Two years ago they asked for help and we responded with tens of thousands of us adding our signatures! [5] This is WeMove Europe at our best. Our goal is to use people power to build a better Europe. That means building partnerships like this, that connect our community with others rooted in the challenges we face. All to run bigger campaigns than any of us could alone. This is how we transform Europe together. We leapt into action to sustain the demand for a better future for farm animals. First, we chipped in to fund an opinion poll. This helped show where Europeans stood on the issue and gave a way to push back against the industrial farming lobbyists. Then, thousands of us took the time to contact our MEPs just ahead of critical votes in the European Parliament. It's a contribution that didn?t go unnoticed. The team running the ECI said the WeMove Europe community rallied behind every call - ?For our ECI, the WeMove team were our guardian angels. Their expertise and unconditional support were fundamental to our initiative getting across the finishing line.? Together, we?ve played our part in keeping the pressure up. So, when the EU?s top official for health Stella Kyriakides announced the end of the cage, it?s your voice she?s listening to Vladimir. Here's to more wins together in the future, David (London), Thomas (Brussels), Olga (Bologna) and the rest of the WeMove Europe team PS. The campaigns we work on together aren?t always decided in a matter of days. Just like this one, sometimes they take years of pressure. But we don?t take a single cent from corporations or political groups. We?re able to take the sustained action that?s needed thanks to small, recurring donations from our community. Will you help ensure we have the resources to secure more wins like this in future? Yes - I?ll chip in to power more wins References: [1] https://twitter.com/SKyriakidesEU/status/1410197648875864068?s=20 [2] https://europa.eu/citizens-initiative/initiatives/details/2018/000004_en [3] https://www.endthecageage.eu/how-close-are-we-to-a-cage-free-europe/ [4] https://act.wemove.eu/campaigns/no-cages https://act.wemove.eu/campaigns/industrial-farming [5] The End the Cage Age ECI was coordinated by our partners Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) WeMove Europe is an independent and values-based organisation that seeks to build people power to transform Europe in the name of our community, future generations and the planet. They have been lobbied hard by the forestry industry, which wants to burn more and more trees for energy. But we know our forests are not fuel. They need protecting. We have been asking the EU to listen to the calls from science and from people like us across Europe to stop destroying and burning forests. These meetings are long drawn out affairs. We know that decision makers won't be glued to the debate the whole time, they'll be using their phones to keep up to date with the world. This means, scrolling on social media. If we send out tweets now, we can be sure that when they take a break they don't stop thinking about the future of our forest. So as the European Commission finalises its proposal, we are taking to Twitter, to remind them that burning trees is not green. If you have Twitter, please take a minute to tweet with us. Sign Now The Extinction Crisis Emergency Act is a new bill recently introduced in Congress ? and it must pass. As climate change, habitat loss, wildfires, poaching, and the international trade in wildlife parts take their toll, many species all across the U.S. and even the globe are facing an ominous threat to their very existences. The situation is so dire, lawmakers are urging President Biden to declare this mass extinction crisis a "national emergency," which it is. Scientists currently estimate that around 1 million species of animals and plants are currently at risk of extinction, including more than 30 percent of species in the U.S. Without these animals and plants, our future looks a lot more bleak and a lot less certain. Pollinators like bees are imperative to keep our ecosystem afloat; many types of marine animals help with water purification; and other animals like vultures and Tasmanian devils prevent the spread of disease. But to prevent these extinctions, U.S. federal action is imperative. That's why, under the Extinction Crisis Emergency Act, all federal agencies would begin to prioritize species conservation, habitat restoration, and fighting climate change. Tell Congress to pass the Extinction Crisis Emergency Act, and to urge President Joe Biden to declare the current extinction events a national emergency! Hi, I'm ?lex and I often work in the background, in fact this is the first email I?ve sent you. I support this community's work online by coordinating our social media accounts. Since I started I've been impressed by the energy of this community. But recently, I?ve been producing our annual report and I?ve been bowled over by our power to transform Europe. We've been living through a global pandemic and it has been rough all round. Yet, as we pulled together the stories behind the campaigns we ran - I saw a clear picture of hope in the despair. So, I wanted to take time to write an email that?s a little bit different. Alongside preparing the annual report, I?ve taken the time to create some graphics just for you. Below you can find highlights from 2020 and share what you?re most proud of achieving together. Get yourself a cup of tea, sit back and have a look at the powerful work we've done... Together we?re ensuring Europe puts people before profits. When the European Commission presented a new Chemicals Strategy, it threatened to deliver business as usual for big polluters. Well, until we intervened with our 127,000 strong petition! It helped those pushing for a plan fit for our planet to show citizens were watching. Together we forced a rewrite. Share this proud moment Along with fighting for a Europe that gives everyone a chance to thrive. Last year Europeans were feeling the effects of the pandemic as industries shut down. So, our community lept into action. We took the idea of an Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) to the European stage. Showing that 70% of Europeans support the idea and kick starting a conversation we continue today. Share this proud moment Continuing to confront the threats to our climate Global threats need global solutions. So, we know that the path to protecting the environment must be paved with EU action. In 2020 we had to move fast to block the recycling of lead contaminated PVC. So, we came together to send thousands of tweets and over 27,000 emails to MEPs. Our action helped ensure they voted the measure down. Share this proud moment And, we forced Europe's leaders to drop ties with big corporations. It?s a simple idea, that those in positions of power shouldn't have conflicts of interest. Yet, it?s something we have to stand up for over and over. When several top political appointees failed to declare their full financial interests, over 100,000 of us pushed back. And we won. Together we triggered a wave of outcry that in two weeks forced a change. Share this proud moment But these spotlights just scratch the surface. We also hit a record 76% of funding coming from individuals like yourself! That?s critical for our community, because we don?t take a single cent from corporations or governments. These small donations mean we have the independence needed to be agile and powerful. You can reflect on everything we did in 2020 in detail as the full report is out now for you to explore. It tells a clear story of how we came together to keep the momentum going on many issues that could have faded. Because we are a community of over a million united by a belief that if people have a say, Europe can be better tomorrow than it is today. If this past year has shown us anything, amidst the pain of the pandemic, it?s if we move together we can make great things happen. Thanks for making all this possible, ?lex (Barcelona) and the WeMove Europe team PS. Don?t forget you can explore the full annual report whenever you like here! WeMove Europe is a community of people from all walks of life, who call Europe our home, no matter where we were born, where we live or who we love. In the name of a brighter future for people and the planet, we come together to sign petitions, send letters and protest on the streets to make our voices heard. Our power comes from each other. A powerful committee of lawmakers is meeting tomorrow to vote on key measures in the draft legislation -- it?s a critical moment that will set the stage for whether Europe is truly prepared to stand up for People against Big Tech. Then the ocean exploded into fire. Message-ID: <1E52620D95F0430EA6AD0671F394035F@evol.sp.ru> This oil corporation set the ocean on fire with leaked gas, but it's still operating in the Gulf of Mexico Sign Now A volcanic-looking "eye of fire" erupted in the Gulf of Mexico recently, spewing lava-esque bubbles of huge orange flames on the surface of the ocean. The apparent cause? Most likely an underwater pipeline. Earlier in the day, internal reports show that Pemex ? a state-owned petroleum company in Mexico ? became aware its oil drilling equipment had been compromised and was malfunctioning after a heavy storm came through. Then, just before the inferno, staff noticed a gas leak. Yet some officials in charge are still claiming this catastrophe was not related to "any spill." The blaze raged for more than 5 hours before firefighting crews were able to extinguish it. The corporation is claiming it will supposedly do a full investigation, but we know where that always leads with oil and gas companies: no where. Meanwhile, wildlife and precious ecosystems may have been harmed or killed in this disaster, but Pemex is still operating its rigs, pumping out approximately 680,000 barrels of oil in the region every single day. Pemex leaked; now it should lose. Demand that Pemex's license to operate in the Gulf of Mexico be revoked and that its damaged equipment is shut down, before it has the chance to do any more destruction! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Let's not wait until Pemex's pipelines explode into a full-blown ExxonMobil-style scenario, coating the entire Gulf with toxic, choking chemicals. Sign Now California's 2020 wildfire season was the largest in modern history ? nearly 10,000 separate fires burned almost 5 million acres, displacing tens of thousands of residents from their homes and killing 33 people. But one metric that we cannot be sure of is the number of animal lives lost, both during these disasters and in the following months of lasting damage and cascading negative effects. And now, as of this writing in July, 2021, California's wildfires have already "scorched 3 times more land than in the same period" last year. Nowhere is safe once the wildfires have taken hold. Even aquatic ecosystems, like Redwood Shores Lagoon off the San Francisco Bay, have seen a total disruption. Ash falls from the sky, killing many of the fish; pelicans and egrets fail to return without their fish food sources, as do bat rays. These animals recovered this year just weeks before the next, even more devastating wildfire season began and the horrible cycle started all over again. Scientists, for years, have been calling for more year-round maintenance of fuel areas ? places where dry vegetation, made even drier by climate change induced heat and droughts, lays waiting to become uncontrolled, deadly wildfires. This has largely gone unaddressed, or even overpromised; in preparation for the 2020 season, Governor Newsom claimed 90,000 acres of land had been treated. An investigation uncovered that this number was closer to 12,000. California has been routinely falling short in its wildfire preparedness, and the incalculable number of wildlife lost is only going to increase if the state doesn't change its ways. Sign the petition and demand that California listen to the science, and do more year-round to prevent uncontrolled wildfires instead of it becoming a yearly emergency! Thank you, Lauren The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. California needs to do much more in between wildfire seasons, as ecosystems have just barely bounced back from last year's flames. Around a quarter of global emissions come from mass-scale factory farming. And the EU is set to approve a new 7-year plan that means business as usual for industrial farms. [1] I feel lucky to be part of the WeMove Europe community though, because we?ve come together to push back. Together we?re supporting those developing a revolution that is about greener, small-scale farming. When people in Poland approached us with the idea to revolutionise the fields by teaming up with farmers, I thought indeed we don?t need to wait for policies to become better ? we could start on the ground! That?s how I came to coordinate this initiative, led by an amazing team of activists. Agnieszka, Maciej, Kasia, Marta, Karina, Wioletta, are only some of those activists. They have been hard at work these past months. Knocking on doors, jumping on trains, joining rural women?s meetings. Actions that have brought together climate activists and small farmers in Poland towards climate action. The Polish government, with the corporate lobby whispering in its ear, is blocking progress on the climate crisis at every turn. Now, they?re pushing mega projects that would block climate actions for decades. One such project, called CPK, would see 3,000 square hectares of farming land cemented over in the name of more highways and an airport! [2]. Dozens of families could be evicted and stripped of their livelihood. All of this to make millions for a few companies. If we?re going to win, farming communities and people who care for the climate must come together. That?s why we?re helping farmers speak up and engage in climate debates. Here are some of the things we?ve been up to: A debate between farmers and affected communities. a.. We?ve run trainings for local people: wonderful people who help with the daily reporting of the injustices farmers are facing in their communities, making sure this news is shared beyond their towns. b.. Farming communities were mobilised, connecting those directly affected by the CPK cement project. Media and politicians often talk about what the ?opposition? thinks about this horror mega project ? while ignoring the fate of those that will be dispossessed. Our event strengthened the voice of farmers affected. c.. We're connecting farming communities and climate scientists face-to-face: reaching a common understanding is essential for building a common front after all! d.. We're spreading the word amongst activists in cities and getting many more excited about the revolution in the fields - because building bridges between urban and rural groups is important. This is us in the most recent national gathering of the climate movement Extinction Rebellion. We started off as a few dreamers and a team of committed volunteers. But we are attracting attention as we expand to more farming communities. Here you can see a map of the farming communities we?ve reached out to so far. This is the story of just one of the pieces in a farming revolution puzzle. It?s a story woven by Agnieszka, Maciej, Kasia, Marta, Karina, Wioletta, and thousands of WeMove Europe members. Because however far Poland may seem to be from you, we need to change the way we grow plants and animals for food in Europe. And this revolution is just the beginning! Our dream is nothing less than to see it spread to all corners of our continent. You can help do just that by sharing this story with others now. News of the world environment NEWSLETTER | JULY 16, 2021 [image: Like the Journal] [image: Tweet with the Journal] [image: Daily nature shots] Magic in Everyday Nature A few months ago, when packing up books in preparation for a big move, I stumbled upon one of my favorite childhood reads, Brian Jacques? 1988 *Mossflower*, part of his long-running fantasy series, *Redwall*. I turned randomly to one of the yellowed pages in the middle and read: ?*Early morning was enveloped in white mist. It clung to tree and bush like a gossamer shawl, sparkling with dewdrops in the promise of a hot sunny day ahead.?* Well, that was enough of a hook for me, so I turned back to page one. There?s something evocative about Jacques? brand of nature writing. Yes, *Mossflower* is a children?s fantasy ? with personified mice and ferrets, medieval battle scenes between good and evil, and a hero?s journey ? but, to me at least, the magic in Mossflower Wood isn?t the talking animals but its everyday nature, the magic of the place itself. The River Moss flows with life through the silent and tangled forest canopy. Dewdrops sparkle through the mist. Woodland inhabitants feast together in their arboreal great halls ? their primary connection to one another is the landscape they all call home. As a kid, and still today, these scenes helped me recognize the kind of person I wanted to be and the kind of life I wanted to experience. The good news is that this magic of everyday nature doesn?t exist in fantasy literature alone. Five weeks ago, my wife and I planted a garden at our home in Canada?s Northwest Territories. I didn?t expect to be harvesting so soon in the season, but I underestimated the miracle of 20-hour sunlight. (*The kale runneth over! What am I to do with all this chard?)* Earlier this week, we sat spellbound by Alexandra Falls on the Hay River, which boomed like the thunderstorm that greeted us when we arrived home later, and sent shivers down our spines. Everyday nature, whether in the garden or in the wilderness, is a magic that?s very real. Literature is a great place to help us notice it and be enchanted by it. Now it?s time to cherish it, and even fight for it, not unlike those woodland creatures in Mossflower Wood. Enchantment may prove essential in overcoming the ecological crises we face. *Austin Price* Contributing Editor, *Earth Island Journal* Photo by: Sharon / Flickr TOP STORIES *The Cat Can't Go Back* Trump?s border wall has stranded Arizona?s last known ocelot ? affectionately known as Lil? It's time to ban zoos from imprisoning elephants. Sign Now A recent British government investigation found that there is no way for elephants to live healthy lives in zoos or similar facilities. That explains why captive elephants often don't make it past 17 years old ? while in the wild they routinely live for up to 50 years. As a result, Parliament is considering banning zoos and safari "parks" from holding these majestic animals prisoner. This is huge news! But the proposed bill hasn't passed yet ? leaving just enough time for opponents to try and prevent this legislation from passing. That is, unless we speak out loudly and demand Parliament stand firm. In their natural habitats, elephants live in close-knit family units, displaying nuanced social dynamics such as lifetime bonding, caring for each other when injured, and mourning their dearly departed. Together, elephant herds forage for food, walking as many as 30 miles in a given day. By contrast, even some of the biggest zoo enclosures are just 0.1 mile by 0.1 mile large (with an area of around 7.5 acres total). That's a tiny fraction of the daily ground elephants need to cover in order to keep healthy. Lawmakers in the U.K. must follow through on their promises. Tell Parliament to pass the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill and save elephants from further captivity now! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. British lawmakers already banned the use of elephants in circuses. World Heritage Center, Director, Dr. Mechtild Rossler < M.Rossler at unesco.org > Concerning the Western Caucasus World Heritage Property ? ??. ?????? ?????-????????? ????? Dear Sir/Madam, We, representatives of the scientific community, are writing to you regarding the World Heritage property ?Western Caucasus? (Russian Federation). State of conservation report and the Draft Decision on this property should be discussed at the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee (on July 23, according to the tentative calendar). We are extremely concerned about the condition of the property. Moreover, it clearly follows from the IUCN and World Heritage Center report that the Outstanding Universal Value of the property is under serious threat. A large-scale commercial tourist infrastructure is planned to be built on the Lagonaki Plateau, inside the property. In addition, in 2020, the Russian Government adopted a decision according to which it is allowed to build tourist and sports infrastructure on other parts of the property, including those of the greatest value (for example, the Fisht-Oshten Mountain Range). In our opinion, this would lead to serious consequences for those natural objects that served as the basis for the inscription of the property on the World Heritage List. The Lagonaki Plateau, and the Fisht-Oshten Mountain Range, is a unique natural complex, with an extremely rich landscape and biological diversity and has no analogues in Russia. It is also a home of many animals: Caucasian chamois, West Caucasian tur, red deer, brown bear etc. The Lagonaki Plateau, as part of the Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve, is the most important ornithological territory of international importance. The territory of the Lagonaki Plateau is extremely important for the preservation of rare and endangered species. The significance of the entire territory of the ?Western Caucasus? property for the preservation of unique landscapes, species diversity of plants and animals on a national and global scale is indisputable. Furthermore, large-scale ski resorts and highways are planned to be built on the territories adjacent to the property, but ecologically inextricably linked with it. According to the IUCN and World Heritage Center, this may threaten the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. The World Heritage Committee has repeatedly stated its position that the construction of large-scale infrastructure on the property, including on the Lagonaki Plateau, is the basis for inscription on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The World Heritage Committee repeatedly requests that no infrastructure be planned within the boundaries of the property and on the territory directly adjacent to it, and that an EIA be carried out before any investment project is considered. The Draft Decision requests to invite a joint World Heritage Centre/IUCN Reactive Monitoring mission to evaluate whether the property meets the conditions for inscription on the List of World Heritage in Danger. As it became known from the Draft Decision, the State Party of the Russian Federation informed the World Heritage Center of its desire to clarify the boundaries of the property. It proposes the exclusion of enclaves in the Lagonaki Plateau area. The draft decision rightly notes that such a reduction of the property?s boundaries would have to be considered through a significant modification of the boundaries, and that the proposed boundaries would create fragmentation of the property, and would be likely to have a direct negative impact on the property?s OUV. We believe that the Draft Decision prepared by the WHC and IUCN fully complies with both regulatory documents and the spirit of the World Heritage Convention, and should be supported by the Committee. Nevertheless, the discussion of the Draft Decision was open. We believe that if the Committee agrees to amendments that weaken the Draft Decision, this will create a real threat to the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. It should be noted that new threats to the World Heritage World Heritage property ?Western Caucasus? are constantly appearing. Already in June 2021, on behalf of the Russian Government, work for planning on the construction of a high-speed highway from Kislovodsk to Sochi, crossing the territory of the property. In this context, the joint World Heritage Centre/IUCN Reactive Monitoring mission that will comprehensively evaluate all threats to the property is absolutely necessary and fully complies with the Convention and the Operational Guidelines. In this regard, we kindly ask you to support the Draft Decision prepared by the WHC and IUCN on the World Heritage property ?Western Caucasus?. -- ? ?????????, ????? ??????? -- ?? ???????? ??? ?????????, ????????? ????????? ?? ?????? More than 90% of Tambrauw residents are traditional farmers and fishermen who depend on the land and environment for their survival, and the development of the military base would increase militarism against community members and threaten their long-term health and sustainability. In this email below, local lawyer and resident of Tambrauw, Yohanis Mambrasar, tells us firsthand what is happening in Tambrauw and how we can help end the militarism devastating their otherwise peaceful and safe community: "My name is Yohanis Mambrasar, I am a lawyer and a resident of Tambrauw, West Papua. The people of Tambrauw appointed me as their legal counsel when we began our protest against the construction of a new military base Kodim in Tambrauw. "The people of Tambrauw have long experienced military violence from the TNI (Indonesian National Army). I experienced military violence first hand in 2012, while my parents experienced TNI violence in the 1960s-1980s when Papua was designated as a military operation area. Yohanis Mambrasar at a rally to stop the development of a military base in Tambrauw "In 2008 our homeland was re-zoned and named Tambrauw Regency. This is when military violence against us began again. Under Indonesian rule the military is deeply involved in development and other civilian affairs, to the point of creating policies that regulate and suppress citizens who are demanding their rights. The involvement of the military in regulating and limiting civil rights in society frequently leads to violence against the people. In the last four years alone we have recorded 31 cases of military violence against civilians in just 5 districts. "Currently, the TNI and the Government are planning to build a new military base, the 1810 Tambrauw Kodim, and the TNI has mobilized hundreds of troops to Tambrauw. Yohanis Mambrasar "We, the residents of Tambrauw, do not agree with the presence of the TNI in Tambrauw. We held a consultation among community leaders - Traditional Leaders, Church Leaders, Women Leaders, Youth and Students - and we are united in our rejection of the construction of the 1810 Kodim and all its supporting units. We have even submitted our decision directly to TNI and the government, but TNI insists on building the Kodim and its supporting units. "We don't want any more military violence against our citizens. We also don't want the presence of the military to facilitate the arrival of investment in our area that can steal our natural resources and destroy the forests where we live. "We Tambrauw people want to live in peace on our ancestral land. We have a culture of social relations and rules of life that govern our lives in an orderly and peaceful manner. The culture and rules of life that we adhere to have proven to create a harmonious and balanced life for us Tambrauw people and the natural environment in which we live. "We need your help to stop this militarisation of our homeland. Please lend your support to help the people of Tambrauw stop the construction of a new military base, and get the military out of Tambrauw." Fef, Tambrauw, West Papua Yohanis Mambrasar, FIMTCD Collective All donations made will be split evenly between the Tambrauw Indigenous community and World BEYOND War to fund our work opposing military bases. Specific expenses for the community include transportation of elders coming from distributed remote areas, food, printing and photocopying of materials, rental of a projector and sound system, and other overhead costs. Make it a recurring donation at any monthly level and from now until the end of August, a generous donor will donate $250 directly to World BEYOND War to help sustain the movement to abolish war once and for all. ----------- original text in Indonesian: Pernyataan Menolak Pembangunan Kodim Di Tambrauw Nama Saya Yohanis Mambrasar, saya merupakan warga Tambrauw, Papua Barat. How can walking lay a path for a world beyond war? The Abraham Path Initiative (API) has been developing walking trails in Southwest Asia (aka ?the Middle East?) since 2007. This U.S.-based NGO promotes walking as a tool for economic development, intercultural experiences, and fostering friendships across the challenging divides of our times. When basic needs are met and people are seen in the fullness of their humanity, a foundation for fruitful engagement becomes possible. When people walk together toward a shared destination, their visions for what may be possible also align. In this webinar, we explore the work, successes, and challenges of creating walking trails in a region known for conflict. We meet API?s executive director and it?s consultants in Palestine and Iraq. The conversation will be moderated by Salma Yusuf, Advisory Board Member of World BEYOND War, and Q&A facilitated by David Swanson, Executive Director of World BEYOND War. World BEYOND War and the Abraham Path Initiative co-host this lively discussion on how stable, community-based tourism may be a pathway to peace, and how to get involved in future peace walks. ENPARD-?? ??????????: www.enpard.ge. July 2-19, 2021. Bulachauri Green Center - The pandemic crisis and restrictions in the country have had a significant impact on the provision of non-formal education opportunities for young people. We are pleased that with the financial support of the EU ENPARD Program, New World Program, Global Water Challenge, and the Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF), CENN Green Camp hosted 40 young people from Tsalka Municipality and 35 young people from all over Georgia. The Green Camp was a cognitive-entertainment youth camp aimed at improving young people's access to knowledge about the environment, sustainable development, human rights, science and technology, and creating new opportunities for youth development. During the Green Camp, both informational and cognitive, as well as field trips and research activities were carried out. CENN environmental experts conducted training for young people on the European LEADER approach to regional development, sustainable development goals, global climate change challenges, modern organic and inorganic waste management, technology, circular economics and water, sanitation, and hygiene. During the camp, participants attended workshops on human rights, active citizenship, an effective presentation structure, and public speaking techniques. Green Camp participants were visited by alumni of international educational exchange programs - FLEX, UWC, Erasmus +, HMC, who shared their experiences, and talked about the advantages of studying abroad and career advancement opportunities. The camp participants also learned about the rules of behavior in the wild and were allowed to apply this knowledge in practice while going on a field trip in the Truso Valley. As part of the camp, participants also took part in an adventure tour held at the Jomardi Adventure Park. We are glad to welcome CENN Green Camp 2021 participants to join the Green Camp Alumni Network and participate in CENN youth environmental initiatives in the future. The camp was made possible with the financial support of the EU ENPARD, the New World Program, the Global Water Challenge, and the Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) within the frames of the projects EBMRACE Tsalka and Community Action to Improve WASH Services in Vulnerable Rural Communities of Georgia (GEO-WASH). The EU is supporting agriculture and rural development in Georgia through its ENPARD Programme. Implemented since 2013 with a total budget of EUR 179.5 million, the main goal of ENPARD is to reduce rural poverty in Georgia. The first phase of ENPARD in Georgia focused on developing the potential of agriculture. The second and third phases of ENPARD focus on creating economic opportunities for rural populations that go beyond agricultural activities. More information on ENPARD is available at: www.enpard.ge. And with you, we can make it impossible for Merkel to ignore ? by spreading our video to German embassies. Tweet this video and, together, we?ll put Merkel on the right side of history. TAKE ACTION Hi, Over 2.7 million people, including you, are demanding something very simple ? action to protect everyone, everywhere, from the COVID-19 pandemic. And it?s working. Together we moved French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Joe Biden to support opening access to vaccines. But Angela Merkel still won?t budge. As she returns to Berlin this week after her trip to the US, where she faced dozens of protests organised by our partners, she may think she will finally get a break. But we have something else in store before key global meetings start at the World Trade Organisation. Today we're on the ground in front of the German Chancellor. We?ll be working to pull off a stunt that will grab the attention of the media. And together, we can make it impossible for Merkel to ignore by spreading the word online as well. German embassies? job is to inform their government of what's happening. If we all send messages to them from across Europe, they?ll have to forward our call to Merkel. Our message will be clear: continuing to block open access to vaccines could ruin Merkel?s reputation. Will you help us by sharing the video online? It will show german ambassadors why Merkel is on the wrong side of history. Share the video on Twitter or if you don't have Twitter, watch it on YouTube and forward this email to your friends! The pharmaceutical industry's egoism and Merkel's continued opposition creates a worldwide inequity between the rich and the poor ? this is real vaccine apartheid. Almost two out of three Germans have received their first vaccine dose already, while 99% of the population in developing countries haven?t. [1] This is unfair and puts all of us at risk. As a result, the Delta variant is ravaging unvaccinated populations around the globe and the emergence of a new vaccine-resistant variant is increasingly likely. [2] That?s why today we come together to demand Merkel stops this. German ambassadors care about the reputations of Merkel and Germany. Now it's up to us to share it with them and spread it widely! Share the video on Twitter or if you don't have Twitter, watch it on YouTube and forward this email to your friends! We are part of a global call for a real people?s vaccine. From Washington to Berlin, from New Delhi to Kampala, everywhere, millions of people are taking the streets to put an end to this murderous inequality. [3] With our people's power calling to keep everyone safe, there is no doubt: we will win against the selfishness of a few richest nations like Germany. Thanks for being part of this, David (London), Alexandre (Marseille), Olga (Bologna) and the entire WeMove team P.S. To pull this off, the WeMove Europe community is teaming up with Campact and Zero Covid Alliance. Together, we?ll get the attention of German ambassadors in showing the consequences of Merkel's opposition to a people?s vaccine. With a giant puppet preventing the whole world from accessing the vaccine! See it for yourself and share the video now. And while it plans to spare no one, one particular population will bear the brunt of its fury: the people who pick our fruits and vegetables. According to scientists, forecasts predict that the western U.S. states ? including California, home to most of the nation's agricultural production ? will likely reach temperatures of 25 degrees above average this summer. Weather in the Central Valley of California, one of the most productive agricultural regions in the entire world, has already roared into triple-digit temperatures this year, up to a whopping 130 degrees Fahrenheit in some places. These are temperatures that no living being should be forced out into, yet Big Ag corporations are giving these workers no other choice. Farm laborers do not recieve steady salaries or hourly wages, instead being paid "by the pail" ? meaning how much they pluck each day. On top of that, they do not receive workplace benefits like paid time off, even for sickness or natural disasters. Extreme weather events force these workers to miss, on average, two weeks of (unpaid) work each year. Yet many families can't afford to miss those wages, meaning they must venture out into the blistering, deadly heat anyway. It has also historically meant working during severe wildfires, even when the air is choking and packed with toxic chemicals. Meanwhile, their corporate employers are raking in the profits. When agriculture is called "big business," that's an understatement. The two most profitable agricultural corporations in the U.S. ? Cargill and Tyson Foods ? bring in upwards of $42 billion and $113 billion in revenue, respectively, each year. But rich executives aren't sharing that wealth with their hard-working mostly immigrant, laborers. Instead they're hoarding these gains for themselves, while continuing to stretch and squeeze their workers to the breaking point. Sign the petition to demand these workers' extremely rich employers finally provide them with full benefits, including paid time off, healthcare, and salaries! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Farmworkers are forced to choose between their health and safety, and "per pail" wages to feed their families. That's just not right ? sign the petition now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Care2.com, Inc. 3141 Stevens Creek Blvd. #40394 San Jose, CA 95117 http://www.care2.com From: Miranda B., Care2 Action Alerts Sent: Tuesday, July 20, 2021 11:19 AM Subject: 115+ degrees outside but agriculture corporations still want workers plucking fruit -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Tobacco. Telephones. Television. Railroads. Radio. Automobiles. Airlines. For the sake of our people, our democracies, and our planet, the time has come to rein in big tech. The EU is making progress but the US, big tech?s home and headquarters, has fallen far behind. President Biden can, and must, demand transparency from the tech giants. Please Message-ID: <605B02C3AB694230A03FE5E33FD138C9@lewpostnew> Bolsonaro?s Brazilian Congress is about to vote on a new law that will force indigenous tribes from their lands and open up the heart of the Amazon for exploitation by industrial meat and timber. Sign your name against this legalised genocide: sign now Bolsonaro allies in Congress want to pass a new law to open up the heart of the Amazon to devastating industrial projects, and legalise the expulsion of isolated indigenous tribes from their ancestral lands. He?s pushing draft bill 490/2007 -- that will basically legalise genocide -- and it will be voted on in Congress any day now. But there is hope. Even the greediest politicians are worried about their image, and we can use that to support the Indigenous activists fighting this new law. Let's show the Brazilian Congress that people from all over the world are against the genocide of indigenous people, and destruction of the Amazon -- our pressure could tip the balance. Add your name now and join 6,000 SumOfUs members in Brazil already fighting this: MPs of Brazil: vote against genocide and reject Bill 490/2007 One of the most obscene demands in this Bill -- a provision designed to ensure isolated tribes will be expelled from their homes -- is the obligation for them to present evidence they inhabited their lands before the enactment of the 1988 Brazilian Constitution. For people who have lived without contact with colonial culture?s laws and record-keeping, this is, by definition, impossible to comply with. The game is of course stacked in favour of the industrial meat and timber corporations. Indigenous warriors simply fighting for their right to exist have been protesting for days in Brasilia -- and have been viciously attacked by the police with rubber bullets and tear gas. Let?s join them to help prevent the erasure of the original peoples of the Amazon and destruction of its vital forests. Sign now to create such enormous global pressure against this genocide bill that even Bolsonaro can?t ignore it: MPs of Brazil: vote against genocide and reject Bill 490/2007 Together, SumOfUS members can stop even the greediest of executives and politicians in their tracks. And then just a few weeks later, the global Climate Summit is our best chance to secure new commitments to avoid a climate catastrophe. It will not be easy, but there is reason to hope. Almost all the world's biggest economies have now pledged to end carbon pollution by 2050 -- and the pandemic has shown that bold, systemic changes can happen far quicker than anyone dreamed. We'll massively scale up our team of media and policy experts, researchers, and organisers to pressure governments to sign a bold new deal to save nature; b.. We'll bring brave indigenous leaders to the summits, ensuring their urgent call to protect life-giving ecosystems is heard loud and clear; c.. We'll help organise historic marches, ensuring our leaders know the world is watching. The threats we face are no longer just serious; they are a matter of survival. Parts of Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, the Netherlands, and Austria were utterly flooded ? in some areas, 2 months' worth of rain fell in 24 hours. Rivers swelled and bridges buckled. Entire homes were swept away and trains were left floating and stranded. So far, the death toll is 189 ? and rising. Hundreds of people are still unaccounted for. Tens of thousands more have no idea when they will be able to return to their homes, if at all. And clean drinking water is nowhere in sight for many of the devastated areas. We need your help to force this chocolate giant to clean up its act and protect children, communities and our planet from destructive palm oil. Sign the petition Trigger warning: this email contains descriptions of child abuse. Kids as young as ten are forced to work grueling 12-hour shifts to harvest palm oil in Indonesia and Malaysia. Exhaustion, injuries, heavy loads, and worst of all: rape and trafficking. These palm oil plantations are a nightmare for these kids. To add insult to injury, huge swathes of magnificent rainforest are destroyed to make way for these hellish palm oil plantations. And Ferrero is happily buying this palm oil to make chocolate spread, cookies, and candies. These plantations are a far cry from the joy of Nutella, Kinder and Ferrero Rochers, and Ferrero knows it. But here?s the thing: Ferrero cares deeply about its family-friendly image. It?s even published a fancy policy in an attempt to fool its customers. We know this is a lie -- and if we expose it, we could force Ferrero to ensure the palm oil it buys doesn?t cost children and our planet. Vladimir, will you call out Ferrero for bankrolling child abuse, land grabbing and deforestation in its palm oil supply chain? The horrific treatment of children on plantations is just one example of the many horrors surrounding the production of conflict palm oil. Palm oil companies bulldoze and burn swathes of rainforest to make way for plantations, stealing land from the Indigenous communities who have nurtured it for thousands of years. Orangutans -- who call these pristine forests their last home -- are shot dead if they dare explore plantations in search of food. Villagers often find dead orangutans -- in 2018, one unlucky orangutan was shot 130 times in Borneo. This endless misery seems inevitable, but companies like Ferrero have the power to end it all. If we force an industry laggard like Ferrero to make good on its promises and clean up its supply chain, it?ll have a domino effect on peers and competitors like Mondelez. We know that Ferrero is paying attention and all we need is a massive public outcry to force the maker of Nutella into action. So Vladimir, can we count on your name? Cousins of the dolphin, only 10 are left alive in the whole world. One of the main reasons for their impending extinction is drowning to death in a type of fishing gear called gillnets. These last 10 critically endangered animals could be saved. But the government of Mexico just made that much harder, by loosening enforcement of regulations in the Sea of Cortez that were designed to save the vaquitas' lives. The Sea of Cortez (also known as the Gulf of California) is a "zero tolerance area" where fishing is strictly banned. This has been extremely important for the preservation of this rare species. But rather than upping its game and cracking down even more seriously on criminal infractions, Mexican authorities have decided to go in the opposite direction ? by refusing to commit enforcement resources unless upwards of 50 illegal fishing boats are observed in this small patch of water. For every single illegal boat allowed out in the Sea of Cortez, another rare and precious porpoise is put in danger. We cannot afford to lose a single other vaquita. In the Serengeti, a small, specially trained team of rescue dogs sniff out poachers and sound the alarm. Just 4 dogs have helped arrest hundreds of poachers, saving countless elephants being murdered for their ivory. Almost a quarter of the elephants in the park now live in the tiny area they protect -- but poaching is on the rise everywhere else and there are thousands more elephants that still need protection. That?s why the team behind this amazing project are asking for your help to train up double the number of these sniffer dogs -- and save double the number of elephants. It could also help governments justify funding programs just like this in parks all across Africa. And our community can be right there, advocating for it at every turn. Sign Now Leaders of the European Union (EU) have a new goal: to turn Europe into "the world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050." Their plan includes reducing member states' net greenhouse gas emissions by more than 55% within 30 years, and eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from cars and other automotive vehicles within the next 14 years. This is a fantastic idea. It's time for North America to join Europe's ranks. Ask the leaders of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico to launch a similar plan! Sign your name against this legalised genocide: sign now Vladimir, Bolsonaro allies in Congress want to pass a new law to open up the heart of the Amazon to devastating industrial projects, and legalise the expulsion of isolated indigenous tribes from their ancestral lands. The newest way to do that is with "fake animal rescue" videos. In these viral clips, a person pits a high-powered predator, such as a snake, crocodile, or even eagle, against pet dogs and cats, ducks, lizards or primates. Then the person presses "record" on their phone. And waits for one creature to nearly crush or maim the other to death. Then, just at the last second, the human filming swoops in and pretends to "save" the underdog creature, convincing audiences that their heroism is real. Even though they're faked, the filming process puts real pets and wildlife in grave danger ? sometimes leading to injuries, trauma, shock, and even genuine death. These recordings are largely posted on YouTube. While the corporation said in March 2021 that it would start banning such content, hundreds of videos remain up on the platform. Every video that stays online means animals continue to be exploited and harmed, and also encourages wannabes to create their own "copycat" videos. YouTube must prevent animal cruelty. Take the Poll Automobile manufacturers have heralded electric cars as a greener alternative to traditional gasoline cars which emit 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide every year on average. However, a new report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Inclusive Development International (IDI) found that the picture is not so rosy. According to the report, transitioning to electric cars would require manufacturers to ?double their aluminum consumption by 2050.? This could have devastating effects: ?The impacts of mining and refining the raw materials needed for aluminum include large-scale destruction of communities? lands and damage to their water sources. The aluminum industry?s reliance on coal also means it is responsible for 2 percent of global annual greenhouse gas emissions.? The West African country of Guinea has the world?s largest bauxite deposits, the ore from which aluminum is produced. In 2019, the government conducted a study which forecasted that bauxite mining over the next 20 years would ?remove 858 square kilometers of agricultural land and destroy more than 4,700 square kilometers of natural habitat, an area six times bigger than New York City.? In a primarily agricultural region, this would be disastrous for residents? livelihoods. Elsewhere in Brazil?s Par? State, a group representing around 11,000 families sued Norsk Hydro, a Norwegian aluminum producer, for improper disposal of toxic waste which has contaminated waterways. There have been some positive developments in the automobile manufacturing industry, such as the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI), which tries to ensure responsible sourcing of aluminum and keep aluminum producers in line with human rights and environmental standards through third-party audits. Additionally, Drive Sustainability, which brings together 11 different car companies, launched a project in May to gauge the human rights risks in producing aluminum and nine other raw materials. Jim Wormington, senior HRW Africa researcher, noted the importance of car companies leading the charge for change. ?Pressure from car manufacturers that purchase aluminum can play a key role in pushing mining companies to constructively resolve communities? complaints,? he said. ?Once car companies and other industries communicate clearly to aluminum producers that they will only buy aluminum that is free of human rights abuses, we think mining companies and the aluminum sector more broadly will quickly up their game.? With the emergence of the delta variant and an only 50% vaccination rate in the United States, that sense of loss isn't going anywhere anytime soon. And now, at the quickly approaching end of July, 2021, a "tidal wave" of loss is threatening over 3 million people in the U.S. when the federal eviction moratorium ends and mass evictions ? and homelessness ? begin. There are already over 550,000 people in the nation living "in a state of homelessness." Housing is a human right, and the lack thereof is a huge health risk ? the average life expectancy of an unhoused individual is just 50 years old, compared to the nationwide average of 78 years. It is overwhelmingly acknowledged in medical communities that homelessness leads to worse health outcomes. Especially during a pandemic that has already taken over 600,000 lives, an eviction could be a death sentence. Without housing, people are pulled into an unmanageable cycle ? it is impossibly hard to apply for new housing, a job, credit, or even vote without a permanent address. That would mark the start of one of the worst environmental catastrophes in Sri Lankan history. Read more Ecosystems Tourism is on the rise. So are concerns about plastic pollution As travelers once again head out into the world, environmentalists and tour operators are hoping to discourage them from using single-use plastics, which have become a blight on beaches across the globe. Within the European Climate Law, which sets this goal into EU law, the contribution of removals via the land sink are explicitly mentioned and kept separate from the need to reduce emissions in the run up to 2030. Overall, the Commission?s approach to CDR governance is off to an acceptable start. Land-based emissions and removals are isolated and no major ?faux-pas? has been made on engineered removals. That said, most of the important decisions are yet to come and how these will be made remains to be seen. https://bellona.org/news/carbon-dioxide-removal/2021-07-fit-for-2030-series-a-slow-and-steady-start-for-cdr-in-the-eu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The day the floods hit Belgium felt surreal. Outside my window, I saw the water levels rising. On my computer, alerts sounded about the catastrophe spreading across the country. That same day, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave a speech, from Belgium, trumpeting the EU's big plans to protect our planet. [1] Did it feel surreal for her too? The floods across Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria were a painful further sign that climate change is here and very real. It means that climate action also needs to get real. Everywhere. As the water levels rise, we think Europe?s leaders need a reality check along these lines: 1.. Everything is connected, most of all people and planet. Today, we produce more and more stuff, sucking up natural resources and wrecking nature in the process. This isn?t an accident. It?s a result of the way our economies are set up and it?s driving climate change with one hand and inequality with the other. The same economic system that causes climate destruction sees workers wages kept low while shareholders payouts skyrocket. 2.. Europe?s leaders need to be able to connect the crises. Hundreds died in the floods, across Germany and Belgium. Meanwhile, dozens nearly died in Belgium last week on a hunger strike driven by a need for an identity card. After living and working here for years, they still have no stability or recognition. [2] Those who stood up for the migrants were criticised for being disrespectful of the victims of the floods. In reality, the issues are connected and rather than playing these two groups against each other, politicians should be seeing those connections. The root cause of both of these crises is a system that is about the expropriation of people and the destruction of the planet. Again, all of this is about political choice. 3.. If more and more crises are happening, it?s because our leaders are ignoring root causes. Instead of sandbags and plasters, we need to take a good look at root causes of problems. The most important of these causes is our economic model which is all about maximising growth without considering the consequences. That is the only way to stop the floods and the tipping points we have been warned about. [3] 4.. The direction of European climate politics is very clear. The new plan Von der Leyen presented last week shows some progress. [4] That progress is a direct result of the tireless activism of communities like ours, speaking up for the planet. But it's far from enough. The fossil fuels industry will still be rewarded for churning out CO2 for the next two decades. And forests are still set to be burned and counted as renewable energy [5]. We have a lot of work to do. 5.. Elections are coming, and they are an opportunity. National elections are on the horizon in places like Germany, France and Poland. They are chances to vote in the kinds of politicians that fight root causes, not symptoms. But democracy is not just about elections, and there is a lot we can do until the elections come. In the next months, we will be sharing lots of opportunities to fight climate change and stop inequality from Europe. But we will need to act together if we are going to confront them. At one million and rising, WeMove Europe is already a powerful community that is starting to build lasting change together [6]. To meet the challenges we face, we need it to be such a huge force that it is impossible to ignore. If each of us reading this email invited just one friend to join us, that could be tens of thousands of new people fighting alongside us. Invite a friend to join us now In all of this story, there is uncertainty. And in uncertainty there is hope. [7] We can?t rewind the tape or wish back all lives, homes and stories destroyed by climate change up until now. But we can take action and prove that we are alive, that we care and that we are not going to accept this situation. With hope, Laura (Brussels) and the entire WeMove Europe team References: [1] https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_21_3541 [2] https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/20/alarm-grows-over-migrants-hunger-strike-in-brussels [3] According to the IPCC report: https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/chapter/spm/ [4] https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/default/files/chapeau_communication.pdf [5] Some of you wrote to us about this and we want to set the record straight: it is important to distinguish between the mass destruction of forests via subsidies and political targets set at European level versus small pockets of people using wood pellet ovens. The problem is with politicians driving mass destructions of forests and calling that renewable energy, not a few individuals operating on a tiny scale [6] https://www.wemove.eu/sites/wemove.eu/files/annual_report_2020_en.pdf?utm_source=civimail-39211&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20210730_EN [7] See Rebecca Solnit, ?Hope is an embrace of the unknown?: http://rebeccasolnit.net/essay/hope-is-a%E2%80%8Bn-embrace-of-the-unknown%E2%80%8B-rebecca-solnit-on-living-in-dark-times/ WeMove Europe is a community of people from all walks of life, who call Europe our home, no matter where we were born, where we live or who we love. Stand up for the animals and end bullfighting, now! Sign Now A court in the south of France just decided the gruesome "sport" of bullfighting can continue on. Despite the fact that the judges acknowledged bullfighting is cruel and subjects the animals to "significant suffering," they concluded that local traditions in Nimes were too important to be "disrupted." In fact, they went even further, claiming: "we should retain the local tradition." Not only did the local court uphold and protect bullfighting ? it also billed a French animal welfare organization ???3,000 for bringing the case to trial at all! Laws already exist banning animal cruelty, and they state that perpetrators can be punished by as much as ???30,000 in fines and even two years in prison. Judges stated these anti-cruelty laws don't apply to the case of bullfighting because of its popularity. But according to polls, the tide is turning against this practice in both France and the rest of the world. Luckily, multiple members of the French government are trying to make this matter right. Let's stand with them. Sign the petition to tell the federal government of France to step up and ban bullfighting nationwide! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Local traditions are not more important than preventing cruelty against animals. Period.
