US to join COVAX as it aims to distribute
1.8B vaccines

US President Joe Biden has reversed a
decision by his predecessor to withdraw from the World Health Organization
and plans to join the WHO's COVAX initiative, which aims to distribute 1.8
billion vaccines in poorer countries this year. WHO Director-General Dr.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the decision, while advising that the
global coronavirus case count will likely hit 100 million by the end of
January.Full Story: Reuters (1/21), CNBC (1/21), Khaleej Times (United

First nuclear weapons ban comes into force

The United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition
of Nuclear Weapons comes into force today, despite not being signed by any
of the world's nuclear powers. "The treaty is an important step towards the
goal of a world free of nuclear weapons and a strong demonstration of
support for multilateral approaches to nuclear disarmament," says UN
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, commending the 51 countries that have
signed the agreement.Full Story: The Guardian (London) (free registration)

child labor

The ongoing pandemic could reverse decades
of progress against child labor as families face school closures, job losses
and increasing poverty, experts warned at an event marking the International
Year for the Elimination of Child Labor. "If we don't step up our game, the
risk is real that we go backwards instead of going forward as we must,"
warns International Labor Organization Director-General Guy Ryder.Full

Reports of rape, sexual violence and
military elements forcing women to have sex in exchange for food and medical
supplies in Ethiopia's Tigray region are unacceptable, and authorities in
the country must enforce a zero tolerance policy against sex crimes, says
Pramila Patten, United Nations special representative on sexual violence in
conflict. Patten is urging Ethiopian officials to allow humanitarian workers
to access the area without restrictions and warning they must protect all
civilians against violence, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds.Full
