New cases of coronavirus are spiking across Europe and the emergence of a new, more rapidly spreading variant of the virus has created an "alarming situation" on the continent, says Dr. Hans Kluge, Europe Director for the World Health Organization. "For a short period of time, we need to do more than we have done and to intensify the public health and social measures to be certain we can flatten the steep vertical line in some countries," Kluge says.Full Story: The Guardian (London) (registration required) (1/7)

Members of the United Nations Security Council this week voiced concern over Syria's failure to honor pledges it made to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to destroy all its chemical weapons. UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu says an OPCW assessment found inconsistencies in Syria's declaration that it has eliminated its stockpile of chemical weapons.Full Story: Arab News (Saudi Arabia) (1/6), Middle East Monitor (London) (1/7)

The World Health Organization announced that it could deliver COVID-19 vaccines through its COVAX facility this month to developing nations that are unable to afford purchasing vaccines on their own, according to WHO immunization director Kate O'Brien. Emergency use listing was granted on Dec. 31 by the WHO to Pfizer/BioNTech's vaccine, and the body is currently reviewing data from vaccine candidates from Moderna, AstraZeneca, China's Sinopharm and Russia's Gamaleya Institute.Full Story: Reuters (1/7)

Authorities in the Dominican Republic this week approved legislation outlawing child marriage, but UNICEF warns the country, which has one of the highest child marriage rates in the Caribbean, will need a cultural shift to end the practice. Girls in the country need alternatives to early marriage, and men must stop viewing women as only mothers and wives, says Rosa Elcarte, UNICEF representative in the Dominican Republic.Full Story: Thomson Reuters Foundation (1/7), Dominican Today (Dominican Republic) (1/7)

A hole in the world's ozone layer over Antarctica in 2020 reached the largest size ever recorded before closing in the final days of December, the World Meteorological Organization reports. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir voiced sadness over an assault on the US Capitol by a group opposing the formal acceptance of Joe Biden as President-elect. "We call on leaders from across the political spectrum, including the president of the United States, to disavow false and dangerous narratives and encourage their supporters to do so as well," says UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet.Full Story: Prensa Latina (Cuba) (1/7), Anadolu Agency (Turkey) (1/8)
