As we close out this trying year, we are reflecting on all that we?ve been able to accomplish because of the support of our donors. Our gratitude is hard to put into mere words, so we've put it into this video: World BEYOND War now has affiliates and partners in 188 countries across the globe, board representation from 15 countries, and an 8-person staff team spread across the world (this year alone we were able to expand our reach by hiring two new team members and have grown our board of directors and advisory boards significantly). We have seized this historic moment of possibility and re-envisionment of the type of world we want to live in by expanding our efforts to once and for all bring an end to war and create, in place of it, an alternative global security system. To put it simply: we put our necks out there this year?excited by our potential for growth and opportunities for advancing our mission. But with this growth comes the need for more sustainable fundraising to keep these efforts going and strengthened. With your support, we can ensure that the movement to end war continues stronger than ever in 2021. If you are already a World BEYOND War donor, thank you! If you are not already a World BEYOND War donor, by becoming a recurring monthly donor or making a one-time donation, you will directly impact our ability to de-escalate and divest from militarism, close military bases that bring havoc and devastation to local communities, and offer increased (mostly free) educational programming that will facilitate the growth of the next generation of anti-war activists and bring critical information to the masses debunking myths behind war?all of which will grow and galvanize a strategically aligned global anti-war movement. You make the work we do possible and your support directly impacts our collective ability to end war. Thank you for all the important work and contributions you make. Looking forward to and wishing you a new year of health, security, and prosperity. Sign Now Millions have been sickened and died from COVID-19 all around the world and we are still months if not years away from widespread vaccine distribution. However, many of the people who are dying unnecessarily are actually passing away due to rigidity in global intellectual property laws (IP laws). That's why India and South Africa have stepped up at the UN to call for a temporary waiver in certain intellectual property laws so that low income countries can afford to produce medical supplies and more. But wealthier nations like Brazil, the European Union, Canada, the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom are against this, for purely financial reasons. Tell this list of opposing countries that they need to put lives before profits and allow the waiver to go through so low income countries can keep their people safe! This is a global emergency and some countries are still more interested in money than human life. Already lawsuits have kept poorer countries from 3D printing ventilator parts, getting access to recipes for coronavirus tests, and now they may not get vaccines for years due to these IP Laws. Message-ID: <5E14AA43D42546129786638346D12A6F@lewpostnew> Dear friends around the world, We just couldn't end 2020 without sending each member of this incredible movement a massive THANK YOU!!! In one of the very darkest years of our shared existence, we shone our brightest, together. Feeding, caring, connecting, protecting, and doing our best to make things better. Not just for our families and neighbours, but for hundreds of thousands of people around the world. When Nareyio says we've saved lives... she means it. Just look at the incredible work we got done together, in twelve amazing months: January -- 2020 was born in flames, scorching Australia in wildfires so big you could see them from space. Our movement didn't waste a second, raising critical funds to help the forests recover, rescue injured and starving koalas, kangaroos and other wildlife, and support climate champions across Australia. Rescued wildlife safe in the hands of volunteer carers and vets in New South Wales, Australia. February -- As the world woke to the nightmare of the Uyghur people, an ethnic minority locked up in China?s brutal labour camps, Avaaz members rallied to free them: pushing for sanctions, pressuring the world's largest pension fund to divest from a massive Chinese surveillance company, and urging the UN Human Rights Chief to start investigating. March -- As Covid cases soared, almost 800,000 of us called on world leaders to cancel the debt of the world's poorest countries, freeing up precious funds to save lives. We joined forces for a global day of action, and saw the call for debt relief backed by the Pope, heads of state, and over 150 former presidents. So far, 46 countries have been able to defer billions of dollars in crippling debt payments -- and we're not done yet! April -- As the world went into lockdown, Avaaz members everywhere opened our hearts by creating over a thousand ?Viral Kindness? groups to provide help to communities as the pandemic surged. But that wasn?t all! Over 2 million of us backed the UN Chief?s call for a global ceasefire -- and the Security Council went on to adopt it, for the first time in history! Whew! May -- As Covid unleashed an epidemic of poverty and hunger, we didn?t look away! Over 130,000 Avaaz members funded life-saving aid in 23 countries. In India alone, we provided five and half million meals to people in dire need. FIVE AND HALF MILLION! We also published an open letter from top doctors in the New York Times, catching the attention of social media executives -- and getting Facebook to show corrections to dangerous health misinformation. ?We are not beggars. We collect garbage daily to sell it, but due to lockdown and fear of coronavirus we cannot sell it. This will help us to feed our hungry children.? Akbar, a garbage picker from the Pakhiwas community in Pakistan (not pictured) June -- Brazilian Avaazers have been fighting all year for a groundbreaking law to protect democracy and fight disinformation in their country. After massive public pressure, a law was approved by the Senate, despite vicious lobbying from big tech companies. There?s a long way to go, but 2021 could see us finally winning a people's law against disinformation -- and taking it global! July -- When Covid crippled wildlife protection funds, Avaaz members piled in to protect the jobs of wildlife rangers and help power an awesome team of undercover investigators. They've exposed powerful poaching rings, leading to 849 criminal investigations, and the arrest of 50 major wildlife traffickers in Cameroon, Gabon, Benin, and Senegal. And they?re still going! August -- Then the unthinkable happened: a terrifying blast tore through Beirut and 300,000 people became homeless in an instant. Thanks to Avaazers around the world, critical funding was on the ground in days, aiding rescue operations and providing emergency supplies and shelter for thousands of families. Meanwhile, we continued our investigations on health misinformation with a groundbreaking report that made headlines around the world! September -- By now, Amazon tribes deep in the rainforest were being ravaged by Covid. Indigenous communities were mobilising to save lives but they needed resources that Amazon governments refused to provide. That?s where we came in -- providing life-saving funds so they could set up clinics, purchase testing kits, and deliver crucial medical supplies across the forest. We supported over 35,000 families and helped save unique cultures from disappearing. Unbelievable! This is a map of the Amazon rainforest (dark grey), each red dot is a Covid-19 hotspot, and the blue are Amazon communities supported by the Avaaz relief fund. October -- And we never took our eyes off the planet. When Europe proposed a powerful new anti-deforestation law, Avaazers flooded the consultation, helping to make it the biggest response the EU has ever had on an environmental issue! We took on a killer oil pipeline in East Africa, and pushed to ensure that a massive new trade deal safeguards the Amazon. It?s not won yet, but we're on our way! November -- Throughout 2020, this movement worked non-stop to defend American democracy from disinformation. We launched over 32 investigations that uncovered vast networks spreading toxic misinformation, and pushed Facebook to take action against pages and groups that have racked up some 3 BILLION views over the last year. Our impact was widely covered from the New York Times to CNN, the Washington Post and the Economist to name a few. ?I believe that fighting against disinformation and hate spread across social media is the next big civil rights fight of our lifetime.? Joyce Jones, US Mayoral Candidate, who joined Avaaz and disinformation survivors around the world to call on Facebook to ?Correct the Record? on disinformation. December -- After months of painstaking climate campaigning, EU leaders agreed to slash carbon pollution by at least 55%. Avaazers across Europe lobbied their governments and funded hard-hitting ads to help ensure this major climate breakthrough. Not sure if all the public pressure made a difference? The EU President personally thanked us for motivating her! Some of the show-stopping climate ads in major papers this year -- fully funded by Avaaz members. We all did this -- and so much more! Our beautiful movement of 65 million people, from every country on this incredible planet. For every time we're told that humanity is selfish and broken, remember this: in a year of fear and lockdown, we rose, opening our hearts with compassion for hundreds of thousands of people, everywhere. That is who we are. And that should give us hope like nothing else. Hope that as each of us look to the future, we will never doubt what we can achieve together -- because together we are capable of more than we could ever imagine. It's using this data to gain more and more power over your attention. In the past decade, the top four most-downloaded apps across the globe were all about social media: Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Facebook Messenger. And all four are owned by just one sprawling company: Facebook itself. Without any true competition on the market, there's been nothing to reign the company in as it grows ever bigger and writes its own rules. This is precisely why nefarious political actors like those in Russia have used the social media giant to try and sway U.S. elections, and to push baseless and dangerous conspiracy theories. Countless experts have been sounding the alarm about this situation for years. Luckily, the U.S. government is finally taking action. After spending years gathering evidence, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 46 out of the nation's 50 states have launched twin lawsuits demanding an end to Facebook's hegemonic, monopolistic practices. By squashing competitor sites before they could become big, Facebook managed to maintain a single-handed hold over our information, making upwards of $70 billion in revenue just in one single year alone. We can't let Facebook continue to make its own rules while it controls larger and larger sections of our online economy and our lives. Sign the petition to show the FTC and state governments that you're with them. It's time for them to follow through on antitrust laws and split apart the various Facebook apps! Thank you, Miranda B. Tell these iconic department stores to stop selling fur now! Sign Now If you have more money than conscience, you're in luck: you can still head to major department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, or Dillard's to buy clothes made from dead animals. The fur trade is built on the sacrifice of innocent creatures like foxes, minks, and chinchillas, all just to make ultra-expensive clothing for humans. These animals either become outerwear after the cold metal of gruesome traps sink into their flesh, causing agonizing wounds and leaving these wild beings to suffer in wailing pain, sometimes for days. Or, they spend their short, miserable lives being abused in small cages. When the fur farmer finally decides their day has come, the animals are often killed via gassing or genital electrocution. The fur industry is so horrifically, sadistically cruel that several cities in the U.S. and even the entire state of California have now banned fur altogether. Some of the largest fashion houses in the world, like Armani, Gucci, and Michael Kors, have also publicly pledged to stop using fur in their designs. And just recently, major department stores like Macy's, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's have announced they will no longer be carrying fur garments. Yet some retailers are dragging their feet, pretending cruelty will somehow make a comeback. Saks Fifth Ave, Neiman Marcus, and Dillard's all have blood on their hands. Tell the government to step in! Sign Now The pandemic has taken an immense psychological toll on all of us. Unfortunately, for some individuals, this sense of powerlessness, frustration, and rage has translated to violence and abuse ? both against people and pets. Rates of animal cruelty are skyrocketing in the U.S. In one area of the country, Washington state's King County, home of Seattle, prosecutors are horrified by what they've seen. In 2020, the number of animal cruelty cases they've filed has jumped 150% compared with the previous two years. One official says the incidents of horrific animal neglect and abuse she's seen during the pandemic are worse than anything else from her entire 20-year-long career. Cats being tied up to bikes and dragged along pavement, or in some cases drowned; dogs being strangled with wire or asphyxiated with duct tape. In one case, an animal shelter saved upwards of 220 pets from a home filled with countless other dead animals. All these officials agree on one thing: the increased stress and fear caused by a deadly pandemic outside has created so much pressure, people can no longer cope. As mental health deteriorates at unprecedented rates across the world, people's anxiety and anger is only going to get worse. The answer is clear: we need urgent mental health care for humans, now. Among them: vegetarian and vegan cafes, shops with eco-goods, shops "without packaging", organizations for the collection and processing of recyclable materials, "green" vacancies, sharing services, environmental events, "green" routes, etc. This year we launched webinars about eco-friendly lifestyle and live broadcasts with representatives of "green" business. During the year, 23 broadcasts and webinars were held. Fridays For Future - the end of 2020. We stood up for people's rights to clean air. Krasnoyarsk was then expressed solidarity by activists from all over Russia! After our action and Greta's retweet, the local authorities of Krasnoyarsk reacted! FFF pickets were also held in Kuzbass ? the main coal region of the country! We took part in an eco-march in Moscow. Then we, along with the whole country, went online. We started holding themed Fridays. We made a video demanding to stop the fire and save our forests! We talked about the "norm", which led us to the current crises. We organized webinars with experts. People began to forget about the plastic crisis, but we reminded them! We supported the Green Exchange Rate program and held a bright campaign for climate with Greenpeace! They made a cool video about us. The design of the natural park "Crane Land" in the north of the Moscow region was successfully completed by the PF "Verkhovye" together with partners from the ecological and educational center "Crane Homeland". During the work, a comprehensive environmental survey of the territory was carried out and a complete set of necessary materials was developed to create this specially protected natural area. Further coordination of the prepared materials with all instances will be carried out. The future nature park is located in the Taldomsky and Sergiev Posad city districts of the Moscow region, its area according to preliminary proposals is more than 103 thousand hectares. It includes natural complexes of forests, meadows and swamps of the Upper Volga Lowland, which play an important water conservation role and are habitats of protected species of flora and fauna. Here are several of the largest in the region of upland and transitional swamps, swampy black alder forests. United States When European settlers arrived in North America, savannas of tall pine trees with long needles covered much of what became the southern United States. But then, by the 1990s, logging and clear-cutting for farms and agricultural development had almost completely destroyed the long-leaved pines and pastures where hundreds of plant and animal species flourished. Restore long-leaved pine took the defender of the forest. At the moment, the revival of long-leaved pine under the auspices of Rhett Johnson is being carried out by landowners, government agencies and non-profit organizations in nine coastal states from Virginia to Texas. Under the cultivation of this species of conifers, an area of 19,000 square kilometers is allocated, and more than a quarter of them have been planted since 2010. "I would like to say that we have saved the long-leaved pine from extinction, and perhaps with it many species of animals and insects living in the neighborhood of these trees. After all, with the loss of habitat, almost 30 of them are at risk of extinction", said Rhett Johnson. Europe >From January 1, a ban on the export of non-recyclable plastic waste from the European Union will come into force. Under the new rules, only garbage that can be disposed of is allowed to be sent to States outside the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The European Commissioner for the environment Virginijus Sinkevicius said: "These new rules clearly show that the European Union takes seriously the responsibility we bear for the garbage we generate. This is an important step in the fight against environmental pollution from plastic waste, in the transition to a closed-loop economy and in achieving the goals outlined in the "Green Pact for Europe". -- ?? ???????? ??? ?????????, ????????? ????????? ?? ?????? It?s hard to think about this past year without it. Before COVID happened. After COVID happened. Before COVID happened, we had a plan for 2020. We knew what key campaigns were waiting for our community. We had a plan. We had dreams too, sure. But we thought it would be years until some of those dreams could be within reach. That's because we knew that for all good ideas, there needs to be a right moment in history. We had no idea that moment was 2020. After COVID happened -- we needed radical and quick solutions to deal with a global pandemic. So, as we gear up for a new year together, Vladimir, take a look at what we?ve achieved in 2020: Thank you for being part of these incredible stories of us working together to make a difference for people and planet. Here?s to a 2021 where even more of us work together! In case now is a better moment, here's the email again :) We don't usually resend emails like this, but with more people expected to make this dangerous crossing in the next days and weeks, every penny counts. Click here to chip in. Dear friends, Johanna just wanted her tiny baby to have a life worth living. So fleeing violence, poverty, and hunger, she gambled on a flimsy, inflatable dinghy -- hoping it would take them to the safety of Europe. But it ended in tragedy. The boat deflated, and 6-month-old baby Joseph died. Over 900 people have drowned in the Mediterranean this year -- it could be THOUSANDS if it wasn't for humanitarian rescue boats. And that's the problem: some EU countries are now shamefully blocking those civilian rescue missions from leaving port. All but one. In the entire Mediterranean, there's now just one civilian rescue boat still operating: the Open Arms. Their commitment is incredible, facing violent coast guards, stormy seas, and daily heartbreak. They've rescued over 60,000 people from the sea -- and they're desperate for funding. We can help. Many of us are facing serious challenges of our own -- but this is our chance to be a lifeline for some of the world's most vulnerable, people who may otherwise be left to drown, miles out at sea. If enough of us chip in, we could help fund this rescue ship through the icy winter weeks, support other missions fighting through administrative red tape, and supercharge our fights for human rights everywhere. Donate what you can now: ?10 helps rescue 1 person ?20 helps rescue 2 persons ?49 helps rescue 5 persons ?98 helps rescue 10 persons ?200 helps rescue 20 persons OTHER AMOUNT These aren't just migrants, or immigrants, or refugees. They are humans: ordinary people in the most terrifying circumstances, just trying to live their lives and keep their families safe. We can't look away. And yet that's exactly what the EU is doing: funding cruel detention centres, drone surveillance, and violent patrols to keep people trapped in countries like Libya, away from its shores. Civilians shouldn't have to run rescue missions -- but the Open Arms crew and others are being forced to step in, saving thousands who might otherwise be left to drown. But it's incredibly expensive work -- and as the only civilian rescue boat currently operating in the Mediterranean, the area they cover is beyond massive, and this is the most freezing, dangerous time of the year. They need urgent funding, and if enough of us chip in, we could: a.. Help fund Open Arms rescue missions through this critical winter period; b.. Provide emergency food, life vests, and hygiene kits to people being rescued; c.. Fund administrative battles to cut through red tape stopping other rescue missions; d.. Power our human rights campaigning to protect vulnerable people around the world. Our donations will save lives, it's that simple. And in another world, it could be us on those tiny boats, holding our youngest, desperately hoping that help will come. We can be that help -- chip in what you can now: ?10 helps rescue 1 person ?20 helps rescue 2 persons ?49 helps rescue 5 persons ?98 helps rescue 10 persons ?200 helps rescue 20 persons OTHER AMOUNT For years our movement has stood by the world?s most vulnerable -- whether it?s refugees fleeing war-torn Syria, the Rohingya running from genocide, or Yemen's starving children. Their intention was to stop the certification of the presidential election results. These frenzied, brainwashed people were essentially allowed to do this. As of 10:30 PM EST on January 6th, only 13 arrests have been reported. Why is it that an angry mob of violent insurrectionists was able to occupy the building for several hours and then literally walk away peacefully? Sign on if you'd like to see every single person who stormed the U.S. Capitol be arrested, charged, and indicted for their crimes. Some say the reason the building was invaded had to do with law enforcement being unprepared. But why weren't they prepared? The far right white supremacists who did this have been publicly planning this for weeks, with Trump in the lead. It was so well planned, they had actual clothing merchandise which read "MAGA Civil War, January 6th, 2021." So it is extremely suspicious that law enforcement was not ready for what they knew was coming, particularly given how forcefully they responded to less violence last year. Worse yet, that it took over 3 hours for law enforcement to regain control of the building. Here are just a few things that reportedly happened, many of them with video and photo evidence that should have meant immediate arrest for the perpetrators. Armed terrorists scaled the walls of the building and replaced American flags with Trump flags. At least one police person took time to take a selfie with the insurrectionists inside the building. A man invaded Speaker Pelosi's office, trashed it and left a written threat and stole her mail. Pipe bombs were found nearby. They broke windows and doors, they waived Trump flags and Confederate flags, which have become synonymous. Rioters stole media equipment and destroyed it, including turning cords into a noose and hanging them from a tree. The rioters bore QAnon, Proud Boys, Neo Nazi, and other white supremacist insignias. It is all caught on tape, almost none of those people covered their faces. So why are they still walking free? Sign now to demand the traitors who perpetrated this attack are arrested immediately, charged, and indicted for their crimes against this country and democracy. In solidarity, Kelsey B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. These new mandatory membership criteria were unanimously approved by us at our last Steering Committee meeting on December 3, 2020 and apply to all 97 C40 member cities, setting a new global benchmark for climate ambition and leadership. The commitment of our 97 cities representing 700 million residents to the Leadership Standards demonstrates the resolve of the world?s mayors to deliver the urgent action needed to tackle the climate crisis. In this unprecedented moment in human history, we know that we must act without hesitation to save our planet and create a more equitable, prosperous, and healthy future for our children and grandchildren. In the crucial years ahead, these Leadership Standards set us on a path to achieve a zero-carbon future, build meaningful and broad coalitions, and set a global model for cities around the world to follow suit. This work is grounded in the principles of the Global Green New Deal as the cornerstone of a green and just recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the foundation of global efforts to address the climate emergency. The C40 Leadership Standards 2021-2024 are as follows: 1.. Plan. City has adopted a resilient and inclusive climate action plan aligned with the 1.5?C ambition of the Paris Agreement, and updates it regularly; 2.. Deliver. In 2024, city remains on track to deliver its climate action plan, contributing to increased resilience, equitable outcomes and halving C40?s overall emissions by 2030; 3.. Mainstream. City uses the necessary financial, regulatory and other tools at their disposal to address the climate crisis and mainstreams their equitable climate targets into the most impactful city decision-making processes; 4.. Innovate. City innovates and starts taking inclusive and resilient action to address emissions beyond the direct control of the city government, such as associated with goods and services consumed in their city; 5.. Lead. Mayor and the city demonstrate global climate leadership and inspire others to act in support of the Paris Agreement. These Leadership Standards will guide our collective action until at least 2024. Trump only has less than two weeks left of his presidency, but we know that every minute he remains in office means that our nation is in unprecedented danger. Donald Trump must be impeached, removed, and banned from public office immediately. Over the last four years, this president has openly defied the rule of law and deliberately eroded the norms and values that are fundamental to our democracy. He has repeatedly embraced white supremacists and fueled violence against Black and brown communities. After millions of us voted him out of office by wide margins, Trump has refused to concede and bullied those unwilling to aid his futile effort to steal the election. The scenes from Wednesday confirmed what we already knew: Donald Trump presents an existential threat to our democracy. Act now: Call your representative at 202-509-0089 and urge them to vote to impeach Trump without delay. No matter how hard Trump and his mob try, they cannot silence our voices or reverse the election. His desperate attempts to cling to power will fail. In this historic moment, we must hold those accountable who enabled and echoed Trump?s seditious, racist rhetoric and are to blame for yesterday?s attack on our country. That accountability must begin with the president who sparked this violence. Together, our grassroots movement truly has the power to fight back against this administration?s lawlessness ? but only if we speak up. Sign Now Canada's leadership on marine mammals' rights has been exhilarating and inspiring. In June 2019, the country took a huge step towards ending the captivity of whales and dolphins by passing the "Free Willy" bill. The law made it illegal to keep any cetaceans in captivity, and also banned the import and export of ALL marine mammals in Canada. Luckily, by that point, few Canadian facilities were holding marine animals behind glass anymore. The only two parks left were the Vancouver Aquarium ? with almost 40 cetacean deaths in just 63 years ? and Marineland, which had been the scene of a multitude of whale, orca, and walrus deaths. Comparatively, far more marine animals are currently being held against their will in U.S. facilities. From theme parks like the notorious SeaWorld to the Mirage Hotel and Casino's Dolphin Habitat in Las Vegas, marine mammals are being used as props and treated as money-making machines across the country. They're forced to jump through literal hoops day in and day out, do backflips on command, endure hours of grating noise and shouts from onlookers, and more ? all just for a handful of sardines in exchange. These intelligent, social creatures deserve better. The next step is clear: the U.S. must ban cetacean captivity nationally as well. This cruelty must end! Sign the petition demanding that the U.S. ban dolphin and whale captivity! Thank you, Miranda B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Whales and dolphins have the right to live free just as we do. The only way to ensure that is to pass a federal law prohibiting their captivity. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Care2.com, Inc. 203 Redwood Shores Parkway, Suite 230 Redwood City, CA 94065 http://www.care2.com From: Miranda B., Care2 Action Alerts Sent: Sunday, January 10, 2021 8:05 PM Subject: Canada is ending whale and dolphin captivity. Newmont Mining has tried every trick in the book to get M?xima out of the way -- she?s been beaten, threatened, even had part of her home destroyed. But she hasn?t budged, refusing to let her home become part of a giant, polluting gold mine. Now they?re dragging her to court, and her legal bills are piling up. Her lawyers are working on a shoestring. And if they lose: she may be thrown off her land. Our community has supported M?xima for years, and now it could all come down to this. That mine has already poisoned mountain streams with cadmium and lead but Newmont still wants more: a vast new gold mine right on top of M?xima?s farm. M?xima has fought them tooth-and-nail, become a local leader, and spoken out for everyone affected by gold mining in the area. She?s even won a prestigious environmental prize. Message-ID: <9ACA821AF1C34EF49CE3F492312868F6@lewpostnew> For the sake of democracy in the US, and worldwide, he must go Dear friends, Enough is enough! Last week, Donald Trump incited a crowd of angry supporters to "fight like hell", and head to the US Capitol. And so they did -- storming Congress to overturn the election results, and stop Joe Biden becoming the new President. 5 people were killed. For the sake of democracy in the US, and worldwide, he must go -- and with him the dangerous conditions that have allowed him and his followers to poison public debate with an avalanche of lies and hatred. This includes the extraordinary megaphone that social platforms have given them to spread his toxic politics. President-elect Joe Biden knows he must urgently act to protect democracy. Let's welcome him with a massive global mandate to fix social media, and help un-Trump American politics -- and when we pass 1 million voices, Avaaz will publish our message through printing ads in major US papers: Add My Name Dear Mr Biden, Today we celebrate the courage and resilience of all Americans who have defeated Donald Trump's politics of fear, hate-mongering, and bigotry. We are relieved that Trump is leaving office. But with him much more has to go -- from the violence he's encouraged, to his denigration of women, Mexicans, Muslims, and many more, to the spreading of lies and hatred that threaten much of what we care about. Now we count on you, Mr Biden, to un-Trump American politics, and rejoin global efforts to defend our rights and ideals from the dark threat of fascism. Extremists are using social platforms to propel and weaponize distrust, and conspiracies, and attack the very heart of our democracies. It's time to ensure social media promotes genuine public debate that serves democracy, and not the needs of authoritarian leaders and their allies. Act now to regulate Internet platforms before it's too lateThis must be stopped before it's too late. Sincerely, Add My Name Add My Name Social media isn?t the only reason that have stoked protests and riots in the US, and division across the world. But it's giving extremist, anti-democratic groups a powerful megaphone, accelerating the spread of their lies and hatred among millions of people - and causing a serious risk to our societies and democracies. Now it's on us to ensure that our governments step up, to protect all of us from this unprecedented threat. The ambitious Great Green Wall for the Sahel and Sahara Initiative (GGW) has received at least 10billion* United States Dollars in new funding. The funding will fast track efforts to restore degrading land, save biological diversity as well as create green jobs and build resilience of the Sahelian people. Emmanuel Macron, President of France, made the announcement at the just concluded One Planet Summit for Biodiversity co-organized by France, the United Nations and World Bank. The GGW snakes along the southern margin of Africa?s Sahara Desert running from the Atlantic coast to the Red Sea. The Great Green Wall Accelerator makes up 30 per cent of 33 billion United States Dollars needed to achieve the Great Green Wall?s ambitions for the year 2030. Mohamed Cheikh El-Ghazouani, President of Mauritania and current chair of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall, welcomed the Accelerator program on behalf of the region. "We welcome the announcement of the Great Green Wall Accelerator Initiative, whose objective is to release an initial contribution over the period 2021-2025, to give effect to the commitments of the financial partners in a coordinated framework," said Ghazouani. "The mobilization of this additional funding through an innovative approach will certainly contribute to the achievement of the Great Green Wall goals, which aim by 2030, at the restoration of 100 million hectares of degraded land and the creation of 10 million green jobs.... This initiative will certainly facilitate the alignment of our partners? interventions, in response to the concerns raised by our Ministers of Environment at the last Great Green Wall Conference," said Ghazouani. Ghazouani stressed that it would ?enable our countries, in accessing the necessary funds, to increase local investments within the framework of the five pillars adopted and to strengthen the capacities of the national agencies of the Great Green Wall. In this context, I would like to suggest the establishment, in each of our countries, of a biodiversity Fund into which we will contribute a portion of the resources resulting from the cancellation of our debts. Cancellation that we call for with all our hearts." ?Pandemic recovery is our chance to change course. With smart policies and the right investments, we can chart a path that brings health to all, revives economies and builds resilience. Innovations in energy and transport can steer a sustainable recovery and an economic and social transformation. Nature-based solutions ? such as Africa?s Great Green Wall ? are especially promising,? said Ant?nio Guterres, UN Secretary General. Since its inception in 2007, the Great Green Wall (GGW) has partnered with stakeholders to regreen the region and create an 8,000 km long world wonder involving at least 11 countries and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The GGW Initiative, now well into its second decade, is an African-led flagship program demonstrating how to harness the power of nature to provide policy solutions to multiple and complex environmental threats, such as land degradation, desertification, drought, climate change, biodiversity loss, poverty and food insecurity, simultaneously. The GGW has inspired many African countries which are now associated with it and its work is contributing to the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. GGW is among the iconic global campaigns targeted for completion during the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration ending in 2030. The virtual 'One Planet Summit' for biodiversity held on January 11, 2021 in Paris was an opportunity to raise the level of ambition of the international community in protecting nature, while responding to the new questions raised by the COVID-19 pandemic as we collectively mobilize resources to build back better and improve livelihoods in the Sahel through the Great Green Wall Initiative. The summit is mobilizing resources, heads of government and partners as well as leaders of international organizations, financial institutions, the business sector and NGOs to make commitments for concrete action to preserve and restore biodiversity, to make strong new announcements and to launch transformational initiatives for nature. _____________________________ENDS______________________________ NOTE TO EDITORS * President Macron will announce the final figure raised by the Summit at about 14:00hrs GMT. The Great Green Wall is an African-led movement launched in 2007 by leaders from the Sahelian countries, with an epic ambition to grow an 8,000 km natural wonder of the world across the entire width of Africa. In a post COVID context where Sahelian countries are struggling with budgets and funding, this accelerator will help meet financial requirements and turbo charge the achievement of its goals. To complete the GGW, it is estimated that USD 33 billion US dollars of investment ? from private, national and international sources will be needed. While U.S. law has traditionally been relatively silent on this topic, the Tibetan people have spent decades suffering as the Chinese government drove their leader into exile, kidnapped and "disappeared" many of his associates, and continues to imprison and murder their people. Finally, the U.S. is standing up for international human rights and freedom of religion by standing up for Tibet. This long-overdue step states that the U.S. will implement economic sanctions on top Chinese Communist Party leaders if the Chinese government tries to name its own Dalai Lama in order to control Tibetans even further. It also prohibits China from establishing any new consulates on U.S. soil until the U.S. is allowed to establish its own consulate in the capital of Tibet, Lhasa. These are awe-inspiring steps ? but it shouldn't end here. Every single day, the Tibetan people continue to be brutalized. This unprecedented clash was largely spurred by an extended campaign of misinformation which claimed that the result of the presidential election was fraudulent. Freedom of speech and access to information are fundamental rights of Americans and can be a driver of powerful positive social change, but the events that took place in the Capitol demonstrate how easily misinformation can be weaponized and used to coerce people to take extreme and deadly measures into their own hands. Today, everyone has instant access to almost unlimited news and sources of information, creating an environment where real news competes with misinformation. This trend needs to be reversed. This starts with rebuilding trust in the media by reinvigorating local news sources which can address the homegrown issues directly affecting people and emphasizing the need to diversify news/information sources. It is more important than ever for each citizen to be able to recognize misinformation when they come across it in their own lives so what happened in the Capitol never happens again. Leadership across the country ? political, religious, celebrities, influencers and others in prominent positions ? also have a responsibility to promote a more civil discourse, no matter their opinion. To this end, The We Hold These Truths campaign will begin to address issues of misinformation, local journalism and media trust as a core component of our work in 2021. Last week, Donald Trump and his allies incited an armed insurrection by far-right militants to overturn his embarrassing election loss. The 1/6/21 attack on our country must never happen again. Today?s vote in the House was the first step toward accountability, but we will not rest until Trump is removed from office and banned from seeking public office in the future. He has betrayed his oath of office and threatened our republic. Act now: Send a message to thank your House member if they voted for impeachment today ? or hold them accountable if they failed to protect our democracy. We?re exactly one week away from the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next president and vice president. Even so, we must uncover the truth of what happened on 1/6/21 and hold all those involved in the attempted coup accountable. If that work must continue after the inauguration on January 20, so be it. Now, the impeachment process moves to the Senate. In the coming days, we?ll put pressure on senators to vote to convict, remove, and ban Trump from office. A few days ago, BNP boasted about its new ?anti-deforestation? policy for the soy industry. But it was all lip service. Indigenous communities in Brazil can't take it any longer. Tell BNP Paribas to stop funding deforestation now! SIGN THE PETITION Every year in Brazil, an area 115 times the size of Manhattan is wiped out to make room for soy farms. And this carnage is mainly funded by a French giant: BNP Paribas. The company claims to care about helping combat climate change, and yet it remains one of the largest funders of deforestation in the world. A few days ago, during a ?zero-carbon? event in Paris, BNP boasted about implementing binding policies to stop deforestation caused by the soy industry. But it was all lip service. Let?s show BNP executives that we see through their empty words, and hold their feet to the fire until they act. tell BNP to stop funding deforestation immediately! Thanks to the hard work of several NGOs*, we know that BNP Paribas has funded soybean traders to the tune of billions over the past four years. Now Indigenous communities in Brazil are paying the price as they watch their rivers, forests, and all the biodiversity get destroyed at breakneck pace. BNP is hoping its empty promises will keep us at bay, but until we see concrete action, we?re pushing the company in the global spotlight and holding them accountable until they act. But this will only work if thousands of us join. Tell BNP: enough talk -- stop funding deforestation and planet-destroying projects immediately! We know this works -- two months ago, during Climate Finance Day, a massive public pressure forced French financial institutions to accept their responsibility in deforestation caused by soybean projects. And our community has done this before -- we?ve gone up against some of the biggest companies in the world, like Pepsi and McDonalds and won. Now it?s time to go after one of the worst deforestation offenders: BNP Paribas. Add your name, Vladimir, and share this widely! Unfortunately, we know that the organizers of that have not only not given up their goal, they feel emboldened by their "success" at the Capitol. In fact, they appear to be planning violence in the Capitol and around the country for the coming weeks surrounding Joe Biden's inauguration. Federal, state, and local authorities must spare no expense in acting on the information to prevent another attack. Capitol security officials shared some of the threats they consider credible at this point, of which there are apparently many. One of those is a plan to have 4,000 seditionists surrounding the Capitol to not allow Democrats in. Some groups have even published 'rules of engagement', which are guidelines about when they will shoot someone and when they won't. They are planning for a violent coup d'??tat against the U.S. Government and they have shown us they are no longer as fringe as we wanted to believe. Kicking many of them off mainstream social media was a start, but they are still organizing on encrypted messaging services. There are indicators that authorities are already taking this much more seriously than they did January 6. But we must insist no expense is spared in protecting the transfer of power to Joe Biden. Tell the country to appoint an animal welfare minister! Sign Now Farming and agriculture are huge in France, yet their government is missing something big: a ministry position for farmed animals' protection. The lack of such an authority figure has meant abuses against farmed animals such as cows, pigs, horses, and chickens have not been taken seriously enough ? and it will continue to be this way until the situation is corrected. For example, a group of French animal rights activists called L214 ??thique et Animaux has taken countless videos over the years documenting graphic cruelty against animals inside various farms. Despite this concrete evidence, harrowing abuses continue to happen. Currently, such investigations would fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture ? but since that department is more interested in the economics of farming and the interests of farmers, there's clearly a conflict of interest. As a result, that means it's not set up to care for animals' well-being. Polling shows that more than 70% of people in France want the government to create a specific ministry dedicated to the welfare of animals. It's time for their leaders to listen to them. All animals need protection, and evidence of violence and cruelty needs to be investigated properly. Tell French President Emmanuel Macron to rearrange his cabinet by adding a new position, the Minister for Animal Welfare! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Message-ID: <93BD26CE64BD49D289AFA9B6CA18DFB3@evol.sp.ru> European leaders are planning to sign off on a death sentence to nature. They're in final talks on a big agriculture package that would fund factory farms for years to come. But we can still stop them. SIGN THE PETITION Would you sign off on a death sentence to nature? Would you sign a deal that will kill more bees and birds? That will pollute our water and air? That's exactly what could happen if European leaders sign off on plans for how we'll farm in Europe for years to come. The new EU agriculture deal will pay billions to industrial farms, fuelling the environmental crisis. Farmers will get money based on how large their fields are and how many animals they have. [1] Their farms require massive amounts of artificial fertilisers, chemical pesticides, and antibiotics. This threatens our health, pollutes the countryside and destroys soil. Many small-scale farmers are giving up. We thought all was lost in October when the European Parliament agreed to this deal. But youth activists across Europe have pressured powerful politicians to drop it. Executive Vice President of the EU Commission, Frans Timmermans, joined them saying: ?The agricultural policy is not sustainable [and] cannot continue like this." [2] We don't have much time left to tip the scales: this Saturday youth activists will rise up across Europe to put real pressure on the EU Commission. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Commission, can still withdraw the deal - but she won't do that unless a whole lot of us speak out. [3] Sign now! Youth climate activists sparked an important debate on the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) last year and showed how this deal undermines efforts to protect the climate and nature. This is our chance to join them. The EU Commission has the right to propose and to withdraw legal plans. Even at this final stage of negotiations, Commission President von der Leyen has the power to propose an alternative sustainable and greener package. In her words, she has been a champion of climate action. But now she needs to act - to ensure this agriculture deal doesn't destroy her good intentions. Together with activists around Europe we can put pressure on the Commission to stop the CAP. It will take a massive, joint effort of all of us. It's not often that the Commission has pulled out from a deal. But if there's one thing we've learnt over the last year it's that the impossible can become possible overnight. Let?s stop this disastrous deal before it?s too late! Tell EU Commission President von der Leyen to withdraw the CAP! It?s when we work together with movements and activists across Europe that we bring about the biggest change. Can you chip in $2 to help end their Nestl? nightmare? If you?ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately: Donate $3 now Donate another amount For the last 20 years, a group of grandparents living in rural Michigan have fought tooth-and-nail as Nestl? pumps hundreds of thousands of gallons of their water supply every day to sell for outrageous profit, while their own streams run lower and lower. They thought they?d finally reached the finish line -- but a new court ruling has given them yet another hurdle. Already $100,000 in debt, this dedicated group of grandparents is getting desperate. We?ve helped them before, and now they?re asking for help again: a quick flood of cash to keep their fight going, and keep alive the hope that they can finally get rid of Nestl? for good. If you?ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately: Donate $3 now Donate another amount In November, a state agency handed Nestl? a massive win. Instead of deciding once and for all to take away Nestl?'s permit, the agency said the final decision wasn?t in its jurisdiction, and pushed the case to another court? after two years and $200,000 of legal fees. Nestl?'s whole tactic is to bankrupt these groups by keeping them tangled in the court forever, and this judge played right into their hands. But these grandparents aren?t giving up, and are appealing the decision. The appeal is due next week and they simply don?t have the cash to pay for it -- let alone to keep pushing for a final decision. Can you help them keep their fight going? Every extra bit we raise, we'll put into the fight to stop Nestl? stealing the water from small communities. Message-ID: UN Climate Change ?Global Climate Action 19 January 2020 NEWSLETTER Race to Zero Racing to Zero and Resilience Together At the Same Time We enter 2021 amid worry, uncertainty and weariness from the seemingly relentless Covid-19 virus. The pandemic has laid bare the fragility of our systems, from public health, to global supply chains, to jobs and industries. But it has also made clear what the world needs to strive for as we roll out vaccines and recover from the health and economic shock of a generation: resilience. Resilience to future health, economic or environmental disruptions will be the foundation of our Marshall Plan to build back to a healthier, safer, cleaner and more secure future. ?The race to resilience is as important as the race to net zero,? UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres said in December. ?There can be no separating climate action from the larger planetary picture. Everything is interlinked - the global commons and global wellbeing.? This is why we?re starting 2021 by kicking off the Race to Resilience, a sibling campaign to the Race to Zero, which will work with partner initiatives to drive cities, regions, businesses, investors and others to build resilience by 2030 for 4 billion people who are vulnerable to climate risks such as extreme heat, drought, flooding and sea level rise. Building climate resilience means helping communities, businesses and economies better prepare for, recover from, and thrive in spite of the impacts of climate change. It means protecting and restoring our global commons - the air, water, forests, oceans and mangroves that keep us alive. It means, for example, choosing crops that will resist droughts or floods and setting policies in favour of the jobs and industries that protect, rather than endanger, public health. Within the decade, the Race to Resilience will transform urban slums into healthy, clean and safe cities; equip smallholder farmers with the tools and skills needed to adapt to climate change; and protect coastal homes and businesses. The Race for Resilience will be officially introduced at the Climate Adaptation Summit on 25-26 January, hosted by the Netherlands. The summit will also see the launch of the new Adaptation Action Coalition, by the UK with its partners the Netherlands, Egypt, Bangladesh, Malawi, St Lucia and The United Nations. The summit will also see a new Adaptation Action Agenda, a framework to propel work to adapt and build resilience to climate change by 2030. The Case for Resilience The outlook for life without it is bleak, according to the Global Commission on Adaptation. Over 100 million people in developing countries could slip below the poverty line by the end of this decade. The number of people who could lack sufficient water, at least one month per year, will soar to 5 billion by 2050, from 3.6 billion today. Rising seas and stronger storms could force millions of people in coastal cities to flee their homes, adding $1 trillion per year in costs for urban areas by 2050. These impacts are already unfolding. 2020 is tied with 2016 as the warmest year on record worldwide, marking the sixth exceptionally warm year in a row, according to the World Meteorological Organization and Copernicus Climate Changer Service. It was Europe?s warmest ever recorded. The Arctic and Siberia saw unusually destructive wildfires as temperatures rose by as much as 3-6?C above average, while Arctic sea ice dropped significantly below average in summer months. Natural catastrophes in 2020 inflicted a record US$210 billion in losses worldwide, up from $166 billion in 2019, according to insurer Munich RE. Six out of the 10 costliest disasters took place in the US, including tropical storms and wildfires. China experienced the single costliest event - summer floods - while India and Bangladesh sustained the worst tropical cyclone. The cost of adapting to climate change is growing too. For developing countries, it could reach US$ 300 billion in 2030 and $500 billion in 2050, from $70 billion today, according to the UN Environment Programme?s Adaptation Gap Report. Financing for adaptation still falls far short of what is needed. But there is a way out: cutting emissions will reduce both the impacts and costs of climate change, the report said. Breaking Through to Zero Carbon Now that 70 percent of global GDP is covered by goals for net zero emissions, it?s inevitable that every sector will transform exponentially - just like the transitions from horses to cars and from analog to digital, with most of the technology we use today. Exponential change is already happening in many key sectors of the economy, often driven by Race to Zero partners. From zero-carbon vehicles to regenerative agriculture, solving these challenges will create economic and societal advantages for the countries, cities and companies who emerge as leaders. In 2021, the Race to Zero will be challenging its members to keep powering ahead and driving for bigger and faster breakthroughs. Stay tuned for more soon. In Case You Missed It... a.. But we can stop it -- join the urgent call for new President Joe Biden to reverse this decision and save lives -- sign now and share with absolutely everyone: SIGN NOW Dear friends, With the stroke of a pen, Trump just cruelly condemned hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of innocent women, men, and children to starvation -- but we can stop it! The UN immediately raised the alarm that Trump's decision to designate Northern Yemen's rebel government as a terrorist organization would lead to a "famine not seen in 40 years". It will make it virtually impossible to deliver life-saving food and medicine to a country where almost 80 per cent of the population -- including 12 million children -- are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Hope for Yemeni children now rests with the new US President Joe Biden. He promised voters that he would end US support for Yemen's war -- and insiders say that a massive rallying cry from all over the world could help push his administration to quickly reverse Trump's deadly final act, and save millions from starvation. Join now. Share with everyone. Together we can deliver 1 million voices directly to key figures in Biden's team directly, and through high profile media ads as soon as they take office. Stop Trump?s deadly final act The people of Yemen are already living a nightmare. Almost a quarter of a million people have died since the Saudi-led coalition began its military strikes, and the country is already suffering a humanitarian catastrophe. It's utterly heartbreaking. Now on top of all this horror, Trump?s decision will block crucial aid to Yemen, as food importers and aid agencies could face US criminal charges for doing business with terrorists. A different approach is urgently needed. The war in Yemen is complicated, with both sides committing war crimes and harming civilians. Ending this conflict will require strategic engagement and real accountability for the war criminals, not blunt inhumane policies that leave innocent civilians paying the price. Stop Trump?s deadly final act Avaazers have stood with the people of Yemen for years, funding lawsuits to block deadly arms sales, supporting journalists to get into the country and expose this horror, and pressing governments across the world to end their support for this brutal war. Let's stand up once again and call on Biden to revoke Trump's deadly decision, and open up the real possibility of lasting peace in Yemen. With hope and determination, Luis, Will, Marta, Patricia, Christoph, Diego and the Avaaz team MORE INFORMATION a.. Demand an end to this brutal industry! Sign Now Vladimir, Simba is one of the thousands of lions that have been born in captivity in South Africa. But, despite what their captors say, these lions aren't being released into the wild to help boost Africa's dwindling wild population. Instead, they are part of a disgusting lion farm industry in which lions are bred only to be cruelly killed. One expos?? showed that in just two days, 54 farm-lions were murdered ? making their farmers an obscene amount of money. Simba was lucky enough to be rescued at 11 years old by conservationists, but very few lions get out alive in this way. In fact, about 12,000 have been bred in around 200 lion "farms," and most meet gruesome, bloody ends. Once they're old enough, they're released into a fenced enclosure where wealthy westerners pay between $13,000 and $55,000 to shoot them dead. We must fight to end this horrible practice and save these majestic animals. Tell South Africa the world is watching and we demand they end the horrible lion farming industry now! It was also the year of intensifying climate change: high temperatures, floods, droughts, storms, wildfires and even locust plagues. Strong action is needed now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to meet the Paris Agreement goals of holding global warming this century to well below 2?C and pursuing 1.5?C. The UNEP Adaptation Gap Report 2020 looks at where the world stands in planning, financing and implementing adaptation actions. It finds that while nations have advanced in planning, more financing is needed to scale up adaptation projects so they can help protect against climate impacts such as droughts, floods and sea-level rise. Get them out of non-nuclear nations. Message-ID: . Nuclear weapons are now illegal in over 50 nations. Sign a petition that we will deliver to the governments of five "non-nuclear" nations in which the United States keeps nuclear weapons: Germany, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, and Turkey. The petition demands that the five nations join the new treaty and remove the nuclear weapons. The new treaty prohibits the development, production, testing, acquisition, storage, transport, stationing, and use of nuclear weapons, and the threat of them. With the inclusion of the prohibition treaty in international law, the legitimacy of nuclear weapons is withdrawn. World BEYOND War and Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) are organizing a campaign in Germany to draw attention to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. We are working together with other organizations to rent billboards in downtown Berlin. Please sign the petition. Please share it widely. On 18 January the EU Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, which brings together thousands of local governments from 57 countries ? including the EU neighbourhood ? which have committed to implementing EU climate and energy objectives, launched a new peer learning programme 2021-2022. The programme offers cities, regions and provinces across Europe and beyond the opportunity to take part in exchanges that aim to increase their capacity and knowledge through tailored peer discussions to tackle their climate and energy challenges. The tailored exchange programmes target those at various stages of the climate adaptation and mitigation journey and will stimulate participants to exchange ideas on how to adapt to climate change through nature-based solutions, learn how to co-create a climate pact with citizens and business, to develop a climate neutrality strategy and successfully apply to competitive funding opportunities. The successful applicants (up to 51 cities, up to 14 coordinators and 5 energy agencies) will be selected and paired by the Covenant of Mayors Office, according to their learning needs, challenges and expertise as described in the application. The programme is open to all current and prospect Covenant of Mayors signatories (i.e. municipalities), provinces and regions, and supporters under the condition that they join the initiative before the start of the peer learning programme in June 2021. Industry will try to water it down, but we have days to make our voices heard -- sign now to defend people like Ram?n and help pass this historic law! Sign now Dear friends, They shot his dad 13 times across his entire body, and left him to die. Ram?n's father, who was defending his family?s land in Colombia?s rainforest from powerful palm oil companies, was murdered in broad daylight. Now Ram?n's mum worries for her son's life. At the same time, companies across the world are profiting from the murder of environmental defenders like Ram?n's dad, importing hundreds of millions of dollars of palm oil that ends up on our supermarket shelves. But finally, a new groundbreaking law in Europe could hold global companies responsible for the human rights and environmental abuses occurring in their supply chains and allow victims to seek justice in European courts! Industry will try to water it down, but the EU has asked to hear the opinions of people from across the world! This is our chance -- let?s make this the biggest public consultation ever and help pass this historic law! Once we hit 1 million, we?ll deliver it to EU decision makers directly, and via opinion polls and full page ads. Sign now to defend people like Ram?n For decades, big corporations have profited from human rights and environmental abuses in their supply chains -- from conflict minerals, to slave labour, and child exploitation. And the very people who are defending our planet are being murdered for profit. As consumers, we can feel powerless -- but this historic law could quite literally change the rules of global business, requiring companies to investigate their supply chains and clean up potential abuses, no matter where they occur. We know big business will try and push back, but there is strong support in the EU Parliament -- and politicians want to hear from us! So, let?s flood the public consultation before it closes in days and embolden Europe to pass this historic law. Add your name now and let?s stand up for Ram?n and countless others on the front lines! Sign now to defend people like Ram?n We know the power of our movement. When we came together to support Indigenous leaders in the Amazon defend their land from giant oil corporations in court... they won! Now, this law could help prevent children from being exploited, environmental defenders from being killed, and pristine rainforests from being cut down. So, let?s channel our power again and make it happen. Small, rural farmers who cannot compete with big businesses are closing shop. Part of that is because of the way Europe?s multi-billion euro farming package is set up. [1] It gives the biggest chunks of money to big agribusinesses that are fuelling the environmental crisis. It?s these industrial farms that use massive amounts of artificial fertilisers, chemical pesticides, and antibiotics -- all bad for our health and our environment. European leaders are in final talks on this deal (known as the Common Agricultural Policy - CAP) that would fund factory farms for years to come. [2] Over 120,000 of us have already signed the petition asking European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to withdraw this bad deal. But the bigger it gets, the clearer it will be to her that she needs to stop it. Will you add your name, Vladimir? Add your name! In case you missed it, read our earlier email below! They're in final talks on a big agriculture package that would fund factory farms for years to come. But we can still stop them. SIGN THE PETITION Would you sign off on a death sentence for nature? Together we helped bring climate activists into the European Parliament for a die-in that sparked climate action on EU level. Together over 4 years we fought against patents on plants and animals -- and won. [4] Together we can move our leaders again. Thank you, David (London), Annemarie (Berlin), Mika (Bordeaux) and the entire WeMove Europe team PS: The agriculture deal forces farmers either to intensify their farming in order to compete, or to quit farming. Many are giving up: between 2007 and 2013, three million farms disappeared in Europe. [5] We cannot keep losing small farms in Europe. Sign now. They now burn wood and food. The EU calls it ?green energy? and subsidises it with our money! The next few days are key to stop this scandal. SIGN NOW When you think 'renewables' you probably think of solar panels and wind turbines. The truth is that in Europe almost 60% of what we call 'renewables' is actually wood and crops. [1] Yes! European power plants burn trees and crops on a mass scale, call it green and the EU gives the producers subsidies for it. But right now we have the opportunity to change this. In the next two weeks, the European Commission wants to hear your opinion on the law that makes this scandal possible. This law outlines what is renewable energy and says: 'Please burn trees and crops, that's green!'. That's why we clear our remaining forests and plough and spray the little that remains of our grasslands. And just like that, our old, dirty, coal plants are magically converted into 'clean energy? plants. All this subsidised with your tax money. Imagine if tens of thousands of us come together and show the Commission that it's time to put a stop to burning forests and food. It could be enough to make them listen. While female chicks are prized, male chicks are considered 'commercially useless' ? after all, they won't ever produce eggs, and they won't grow as big as hens so they can't provide meat. So these poor male chicks, no more than three days old, are shredded alive. It's called mass culling, and it kills 4-8 billion male chicks every year. During a cull, baby chicks are placed on a conveyor belt fully awake and without anesthesia, helpless as it draws them closer and closer to the mouth of a giant shredder. One by one, or in large waves, the babies fall into the machine's gears which crush and rip at their little bodies. Chicken culling is obviously disturbing and cruel. But those qualities are magnified by the fact that it's totally unnecessary ? there are ways of testing an egg just nine days after fertilization to determine what sex the chick will be. This test has been around for years, so why is it the poultry industry still hatches chicks just to brutally slaughter them hours or days later? It's shocking that wherever the poultry industry is operating, this grotesque practice is still allowed. Well, almost everywhere. Germany recently announced that it will approve a law banning the culling of male chicks for good! Let's keep the momentum going in our fight for animal welfare in the poultry industry! Sign the petition telling the European Union to adopt similar legislation and pass a comprehensive ban on male chick culling. Thank you, Lauren The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. It looks like communities holding power and courageously taking action when world leaders fail. We know the solutions that are needed to get us on the right track. We have the answers. We just need people power. If you want to find out how we take action together to halt the climate crisis, watch this It is a fact: our planet is overheating. But we can still make changes that could mean life or death for tens of millions of people across the globe. And we start with taking power away from the fossil fuel industry that created the climate crisis in the first place. For decades our land has been exploited, polluted and destroyed by the hands of corporations seeking profit at all costs. Many have been funded by governments and banks with public money ? OUR money. That?s injustice. The work we do ? and the ways we do it ? has to address that injustice. Today, I'm inviting you to join us as we take down the systems that have failed us for so long. We?ve listed a few things you can do, no matter where you are. Power must be put back into the hands of the people ? our hands. Hi, Something really caught my eye last week. It was a poll, stating that 78% of Germans hope the world will "significantly change" to be more sustainable and fair after the pandemic. The global average is even higher. [1] That is a whole lot of will for positive change. When you think about it, it?s incredible. But it?s also a bit vague. What could that surge of fairness and sustainability look like in Europe? And how could we get there? I?d like to hear from you about your hopes. Where do we need change in Europe? So much lies in the balance right now: a.. Like trains. 2021 is the European Year of Rail. The European Commission wants to promote affordable high-speed rail as one part of the solution to climate change. [2] But that won't suit the car lobby. Or the plane lobby. And they will push like hell to water ambition down. Where?s the people power in this debate? b.. Like access to affordable medicines and vaccines beyond the pandemic: this will hit the EU agenda in April. But is anyone watching what happens there? How affordable will they be? How transparent will the pharma industry have to be about pricing? c.. As the economic impact of the pandemic settles in and millions more are affected, 2021 should really be the year to pilot a Universal Basic Income in Europe. [3] This is one of the tricky ones that is not really even on the table. It won't get there unless we demand it. d.. The EU-Mercosur trade deal will return to the EU agenda: can we stop them from fuelling the total destruction of the Amazon? e.. The Common Agricultural Policy is almost decided on and it has the potential to totally screw up the ambition of the EU Green Deal. By June, we will see whether Commission President Ursula von der Leyen uses her power to withdraw the CAP. Or not. Right now she?s not budging but people in Europe have the power to change this. [4] f.. Will more trees and food be burnt as energy sources in Europe? The revision of the Renewable Energy Directive will say. Who?s watching? g.. Migrants and refugees are still viewed as statistics. And although Europe has not built a wall like the one Trump wanted on the Mexican border, an invisible wall is there. In March, the Greek government violently pushed away people escaping war and poverty on their border and the European Commission President congratulated it. [5] It is in this context that the new EU Migration Pact will be agreed this year. h.. ?750 billion in post-COVID funding will be spent in 27 EU member states this year. Right now our governments are busy writing their plans. Who will get that recovery money? Will it be used towards sustainability and fairness? Or to prop up industries that are not sustainable and therefore should have no future? i.. A conference on the Future of Europe this year could include a Citizens Assembly on climate change that could spice up democracy and generate some good ideas on the way forward. How much does that matter? All the uncertainties we are facing right now can go either way. We have so many opportunities to nudge things in the right direction. And we are called upon to do that. Most of us want more fairness and more sustainability after the pandemic. So, let?s get cracking together. Fill in the survey and tell us: What's worth fighting for? Biden?s Priorities on climate change match with actions the global public wants a.. Priorities in Biden's Executive Actions on Climate Change concur with priorities identified in the world's largest public opinion poll on climate change b.. Nearly 800 million hectares of land can be restored, of which 250 million hectares of farmland can improve through climate-friendly farming practices Bonn, 29 January 2021 - A majority of the people in the world want climate action to focus on the land. This is the finding of the world?s largest poll conducted to gather the public?s opinion about climate change and the actions governments? should take. Conservation of land and forests and adopting climate-friendly farming techniques are the public?s top two policy priorities. About 54 percent of those surveyed want conversion of natural land or forests eliminated. They also want a switch to renewable energies and to climate-friendly farming techniques. Ranked second and third, respectively, these options received 53 and 52 percent of the vote. Over 1.2 million people in 50 countries with over 56 percent of the global population responded to the poll, known as the Peoples' Climate Vote. It is the largest survey of public opinion on climate change ever conducted. The survey results came out Wednesday, the same day that President Joseph Biden of the United States released an Executive Order ?to tackle the climate crisis at home and abroad while creating good-paying union jobs and equitable clean energy future, building modern and sustainable infrastructure, restoring scientific integrity and evidence-based policymaking across the federal government, and re-establishing the President?s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.? President Biden?s Executive Order prioritizes, among other actions, an energy revolution, conserving natural resources and leveraging them to help drive the nation toward a clean energy future, and delivering justice for communities who have been subjected to environmental harm. Welcoming the decision and the President?s offer to host a Leaders Climate Summit in April, Ibrahim Thiaw, Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification said, ?this is a time like no other? and called on ?all world leaders to heed the public?s call for bold policy actions on the land?. We know what needs to be achieved and where, and the framework for action exists.? ?The public is asking us to build back better for a resilient future through better decisions and smart plans. We must stop financing activities that encourage land users to convert natural ecosystems into other uses. Instead, finance must be directed to three concrete activities. First, better foresting activities. Second, fixing land that was damaged. And third, sustainable farming practices that fix the land while increasing its output,? he added. A Special Report released in 2019 by the authoritative global scientific body on climate change, the IPCC, shows that 70 percent of natural ecosystems have been significantly altered. Country reports submitted by Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification show that one in five of the degraded hectares are degraded beyond cost-effective repair. At the same time, a study released in October 2020 by the Dutch-based research organization, PBL, shows that nearly 800 million hectares of degrading land can be restored back to health. About 250 million hectares of which is farmland. ?The public has witnessed the dangers of land use change across all countries. And it is not just in the loss of species or of productive land. It is in the increase in extraordinary and dangerous weather events, such as hurricanes, droughts and floods. It is in recurrent food shortages and crop failures. It is from the society wide impacts of a pandemic of the kind that is linked to land use change. And it is in these impacts worsening with every passing year. It is not a question of whether change is possible. It?s whether the will to change exists,? Thiaw stated. The Peoples' Climate Vote is one component of a campaign to educate people about climate change solutions and ask them about the actions that they think governments should take. It aims to connect the public to policymakers ? and to provide the latter with reliable information on whether people considered climate change an emergency, and how they would like their countries to respond. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and its partners launched the Peoples' Climate Vote campaign in 2020. The University of Oxford and several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are part of the campaign. For more information contact: Ms. Wagaki Wischnewski, wwischnewski at unccd.int. Through partnerships, the Convention?s 197 Parties set up robust systems to manage land degradation and drought promptly and effectively. Good land stewardship based on a sound policy and science helps integrate and accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, builds resilience to climate change and prevents biodiversity loss. Land also plays a key role in the prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, securing rural livelihoods and creating green jobs, supporting community resilience and maintaining the sustainable delivery of ecosystem services.
