                                Officials voice concerns over vaccine
inequity, delays

                                There are currently many bottlenecks
delaying COVID-19 vaccine rollouts, says UNICEF COVAX coordinator Benjamin
Schreiber, as World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus raises concerns that inequitable and slow vaccine distribution
will give the virus time to mutate into vaccine-resistant forms, hampering
the global push to end the pandemic. Many poor countries yet to receive
doses of the vaccine have begun seeking supplies on their own, which experts
warn could undermine the COVAX program.Full Story: Voice of America (2/5),

UN reboots Yemen peace process as US lifts
terror label

Martin Griffiths, the United Nations special
envoy for Yemen, is in Iran to meet with officials on renewing efforts to
implement a nationwide cease-fire in Yemen, deploy humanitarian aid and
restart efforts to develop political processes in the country. The trip
comes as US officials announced the country would revoke its terrorist
designation of Yemen's Houthi militia and end support for Saudi Arabia's
military push in the country.Full Story: Reuters (2/5), The Associated

Ongoing Tigray unrest prompts alarm; WFP to
expand aid

United Nations officials are voicing alarm
over continued violence and insecurity in Ethiopia's Tigray region, warning
that reports suggest grave violations of international human rights law and
urging protections for Eritrean refugees trapped in the area. World Food
Programme Executive Director David Beasley announced on Saturday that his
agency has reached an agreement with Ethiopian authorities to scale up aid
operations in Tigray.Full Story: Voice of America (2/7), News Ghana/Xinhua

Somalia must ban FGM, UNFPA says on
international day

Nearly all Somali women between 15 and 49
have been subjected to female genital mutilation, an unacceptable practice
that causes physical harm and deprives women and girls of their rights, and
lawmakers in the country must take action to ban it, United Nations
Population Fund representative Anders Thomsen said as the world marked
International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation on
Saturday. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed the call, urging
authorities around the world to work toward ending FGM.Full Story: Anadolu

envoy advises

The threat posed by climate change exceeds
that of the ongoing pandemic and must be addressed to avert mortality rates
equivalent to those of the pandemic occurring annually, says United Nations
climate action and finance envoy Mark Carney. Governments must increase the
amount of pandemic recovery plans directed toward sustainability and
reducing carbon emissions, Carney says.Full Story: BBC (free registration)
