We are pleased to announce that, CENN with the support of the European Union, together with four local partner organizations, launched a new project - Georgia Climate Action Program (GEO-CAP). The main goal of the project is to strengthen the role of CSOs in tackling climate change (CC) via promoting the participatory process and building trust and collaboration between state and non-state actors. CENN will implement the GEO-CAP over the next 4 years, together with partner organizations ? Kakheti Regional Development Foundation (KRDF), Association of the Chiaturians Union (ACU) Racha-Lechkhumi and Low Svaneti Agrotourism Development Association (RLS-ADA) and Young Pedagogues? Union (YPU) - in 4 target regions (Guria, Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi, and Kakheti) with the Human Rights-Based Approach based on human rights. On January 28, Director Nana Janashia, CENN Executive and project team held an online meeting with the representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia - Nino Tkhilava Head of Environment and Climate Change Department, Maia Javakhishvili, Deputy Head of the above noted department, Maia Tskhvaradze, Acting Head of the Climate Change Division of the same department and Marina Makarova, Head of Water Resources Management Division - to introduce the project goals, activities, and future partnership opportunities. During the meeting, participants discussed the challenges of the target regions in terms of climate change, the role of civil society, the environment, and human health. Representatives of CENN and the Ministry shared information among each other on various ongoing initiatives, activities, and existing needs. During the meeting, was emphasized the importance of effective and close cooperation between the Ministry and the project. CENN, within the framework of the EU supported GEO-CAP, will continue to actively cooperate with the representatives of the private, public, and civil society sectors and will contribute to the development of successful close cooperation practices between the sectors and institutions. The European Union supported Georgia Climate Action Program (GEO-CAP) is implemented by CENN together with the Kakheti Regional Development Fund (KRDF), the Chiatura Union (ACU), the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti Agrotourism Development Association (RLS-ADA), and the Young Pedagogue?s Union (YPU). The target municipalities of the project are Gurjaani, Sagarejo, Akhmeta, Zestaponi, Tkibuli, Chiatura, Lanchkhuti, Ozurgeti, Oni, and Ambrolauri. Sign Now Vladimir, Monkeys and other primates should NEVER be pets. Not only is the idea of keeping them hostage as cute little toys insulting to these animals' exceptional intelligence ? after all, they are our closest relatives ? but it's also harmful for their health. Yet in the United Kingdom, people actually DO own monkeys as pets! Right now, there are as many as 5,000 primates being held captive in British homes and backyards. That's not even counting primates locked in licensed zoos. Investigations have found that many monkeys' "pet-parents" chain them up in actual bird cages to contain them. Others are fed unhealthy human foods, including sodas, fast-food like burgers and fries, and serious drugs such as heroin, LSD, and cocaine. There is NO reason for a random person or family to simply "have" a monkey. Luckily, the British government is considering whether to ban people from owning primates like apes, monkeys, marmosets, lemurs, capuchins, tamarins, and more. Sign the petition to demand that the UK government immediately ban private citizens from owning primates as pets! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Thousands of monkeys, apes, and other primates are being cooped up and treated as play-toy companions. But these are wild animals whose autonomy should be respected. Thanks! Cass --- FRIENDS OF THE EARTH NETHERLANDS, FRIENDS OF THE EARTH EUROPE Press release For immediate release: Friday January 29, 2020 *** NIGERIAN FARMERS AND FRIENDS OF THE EARTH WIN OIL POLLUTION CASE AGAINST SHELL IN HISTORIC RULING *** The Hague, 29 January 2021 - The Court of Appeal in The Hague has ruled in favour of Milieudefensie/Friends of the Earth Netherlands and four Nigerians on most points in an oil pollution case that was first brought against Shell in 2008. [1] Shell Nigeria in particular is liable for oil pollution at three locations in the Niger Delta, but according to the court, the parent company Royal Dutch Shell also violated its duty of care. Three of the four Nigerian plaintiffs and their fellow villagers must now be compensated for the damage caused and Shell must ensure that there is a leakage detection system in the pipelines in Nigeria. It is the first time that a court has held Dutch transnational corporation accountable for its duty of care abroad. For decades, millions of people living in the Niger Delta have been suffering the consequences of large-scale oil pollution. Every year, 16,000 babies die as a result of the pollution, and life expectancy in the Delta is 10 years less than in the rest of Nigeria. Friends of the Earth Netherlands? lawsuit revolves around pollution from leaks of Shell oil in three villages, which has rendered local people?s fields and fish ponds unusable. The leaked oil was never thoroughly cleaned up and new oil is still leaking out regularly. Eric Dooh from Goi, one of the four Nigerian plaintiffs said: "Finally, there is some justice for the Nigerian people suffering the consequences of Shell's oil. It is a bittersweet victory, since two of the plaintiffs, including my father, did not live to see the end of this trial. But this verdict brings hope for the future of the people in the Niger Delta." Channa Samkalden, the lawyer for the Nigerian farmers and Milieudefensie said: "After years of litigation there is finally justice for many of my clients, only the case in Ikot Ada Udo is still ongoing. Not only is Shell liable for the oil spill and my clients will get what they are entitled to, this case also shows that European companies must behave responsibly abroad." Donald Pols, director of Milieudefensie / Friends of the Earth Netherlands said: "This is fantastic news for the affected farmers. It is enormous that Shell has to compensate for the damage. This is also a warning for all Dutch transnational corporations involved in injustice worldwide. Victims of environmental pollution, land grabbing or exploitation now have a better chance to win a legal battle against the companies involved. People in developing countries are no longer without rights in the face of transnational corporations." Regulation of transnational corporations needed The Nigeria case has lasted almost 13 years, which shows how difficult it is for victims of harm by the business activities of transnational corporations to obtain justice, says Friends of the Earth Netherlands. Friends of the Earth calls for ambitious European and international legislation to hold businesses accountable for harms overseas. Thousands of European citizens are participating in an online action that calls on the European Commission to introduce binding due diligence legislation. [2] Jill McArdle, corporate justice campaigner for Friends of the Earth Europe said: ?This is a hopeful day for all victims of oil companies' pollution and human rights abuses. But no victim should have to wait 13 years for justice. We need better EU laws now to hold European companies liable for what happens in their supply chain. Thousands of Europeans are demanding the EU holds businesses accountable in its upcoming proposal for a new law.? Daily oil spills in Nigeria Despite decades of promises, projects, reports and other lawsuits, the Niger Delta remains heavily polluted. Oil spills are the order of the day. Even the cleanup operation that the Nigerian government, Shell and others were to start is still not functioning after 10 years of promises and preparations. Sabotage sometimes appears to be caused by Shell employees, according to a report by Friends of the Earth Netherlands and Friends of the Earth Nigeria. Hi, Something really caught my eye last week. It was a poll, stating that 78% of Germans hope the world will "significantly change" to be more sustainable and fair after the pandemic. The global average is even higher. [1] That is a whole lot of will for positive change. When you think about it, it?s incredible. But it?s also a bit vague. What could that surge of fairness and sustainability look like in Europe? And how could we get there? I?d like to hear from you, Vladimir, about your hopes. Where do we need change in Europe? So much lies in the balance right now: a.. Like trains. 2021 is the European Year of Rail. The European Commission wants to promote affordable high-speed rail as one part of the solution to climate change. [2] But that won't suit the car lobby. Or the plane lobby. And they will push like hell to water ambition down. Where?s the people power in this debate? b.. Like access to affordable medicines and vaccines beyond the pandemic: this will hit the EU agenda in April. But is anyone watching what happens there? How affordable will they be? How transparent will the pharma industry have to be about pricing? c.. As the economic impact of the pandemic settles in and millions more are affected, 2021 should really be the year to pilot a Universal Basic Income in Europe. [3] This is one of the tricky ones that is not really even on the table. It won't get there unless we demand it. d.. The EU-Mercosur trade deal will return to the EU agenda: can we stop them from fuelling the total destruction of the Amazon? e.. The Common Agricultural Policy is almost decided on and it has the potential to totally screw up the ambition of the EU Green Deal. By June, we will see whether Commission President Ursula von der Leyen uses her power to withdraw the CAP. Or not. Right now she?s not budging but people in Europe have the power to change this. [4] f.. Will more trees and food be burnt as energy sources in Europe? The revision of the Renewable Energy Directive will say. Who?s watching? g.. Migrants and refugees are still viewed as statistics. And although Europe has not built a wall like the one Trump wanted on the Mexican border, an invisible wall is there. In March, the Greek government violently pushed away people escaping war and poverty on their border and the European Commission President congratulated it. [5] It is in this context that the new EU Migration Pact will be agreed this year. h.. ?750 billion in post-COVID funding will be spent in 27 EU member states this year. Right now our governments are busy writing their plans. Who will get that recovery money? Will it be used towards sustainability and fairness? Or to prop up industries that are not sustainable and therefore should have no future? i.. A conference on the Future of Europe this year could include a Citizens Assembly on climate change that could spice up democracy and generate some good ideas on the way forward. How much does that matter? All the uncertainties we are facing right now can go either way. We have so many opportunities to nudge things in the right direction. And we are called upon to do that. Most of us want more fairness and more sustainability after the pandemic. So, let?s get cracking together. Fill in the survey and tell us: What's worth fighting for? This will take less than 2 minutes. We'll be waiting to hear from you! Those were the words of Jair Bolsonaro during his campaign to become the Brazilian president, which he eventually did. And so far, he has followed through on this horrifying promise, waging war on Indigenous peoples and the lands that are both sacred to them and vital to the entire world's fight against climate change. Indigenous leaders are calling on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to charge Bolsonaro with crimes against humanity, will you join them? Ecocide is defined as "causing serious and lasting harm to the environment and people." The term fits Bolsonaro's actions as president like a blood-covered glove. Bolsonaro has attacked environmental protections at every level ? if you take away some regulations, and stop enforcing the others, what are you left with? Contracts. Vaccines. Reading the headlines, it?s easy to forget what we are really talking about here: people?s lives. Add your name to the call to release the patents on COVID vaccines which are our way out of this pandemic. SIGN NOW Hi, Adriano Trevisan was 77 years old and had a gentle smile. He loved to play cards with the locals of his small Italian hometown of Vo?. He was the first person to die of COVID-19 in Italy. [1] Since then it?s been hard to learn the names, faces and stories of those we have lost. Instead we are presented with numbers. 88,845 deaths in Italy. Over 100,000 in the UK. [2] So as the vaccines fight continues, we watch companies like AstraZeneca hold way too much power on who gets them. It?s easy to forget what is at stake. A sister. A friend. A grandfather. Vaccines are the single best chance of survival for millions. We need to be able to produce them more widely and we need them to be affordable to get out of this pandemic. The first step is to make the rights to produce the vaccines, the patents, public. It?s possible to do, but standing up to big pharma and their profits isn't easy. Charles Michel, President of the EU Council, has just joined the call of some MEPs for AstraZeneca?s patent to be made public. [3] Let?s make sure he puts his words into action. SIGN NOW Think about Polio for a moment -- it was a massive killer 50 years ago that left children crippled and an American president in a wheelchair. But you don?t hear about it much today because it was all but eradicated by vaccines - patent free vaccines. When Dr Jonas Salk, the developer of the first polio vaccine, was asked who owns the patent, he said this: ?The people, I would say. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?? [4] In a pandemic that has claimed the lives of so many, there is no reason that COVID vaccines should not belong to people. We are already seeing some key EU politicians speak up. It?s a start, but it?s not enough. This is where we come in. A one-hundred-thousand-strong petition will help our leaders know they can?t lose their nerve now. SIGN NOW The WeMove Europe community has come together in these unprecedented times to speak up for a new normal -- from a universal basic income for all to a recovery package for us built on solidarity. A people-powered and people-owned way out of this health crisis could be part of the new normal too. For Adriano Trevisan, and those we lost before and after him, let?s not forget what is at stake. With hope, David (London), Olga (Bologna), Alex (Marseille) and the entire WeMove team PS: While many of us struggled over the last year, it?s no secret that big pharma has come out as one of the ?big winners? in this pandemic. For them, keeping a patent means protecting their profits. [5] Sign now to make sure there is no room for profits over lives in this pandemic. For Cl?udia it was the raging wildfires that scorched the forests to nothing. 30 people were killed, trapped in their cars as they tried to outrun the flames. It was horrifying -- but Cl?udia knew it was just a taste of things to come: a future of climate chaos that leaders are failing to prevent. So she and her friends decided to do something bold. Now for the first time ever, a group of kids is taking 33 major governments to one of the world's most powerful courts. If they win, all those countries could be legally forced to slash their carbon emissions. This trial could change the world. But the kids need help. They just don't have the money they need to win this epic battle. They're facing a HUGE army of government lawyers and without us, the case could be lost before it even begins ? but if enough of us chip in now, we can supercharge their tiny legal team and run ground-breaking research to prove the case. Because this trial isn't just about carbon emissions -- it's about the world our children and grandchildren will inherit. So, as they enter the courtroom to fight for our future, let?s make sure they know they?re backed by millions! Donate what you can now: I'LL DONATE $2 I'LL DONATE $3 I'LL DONATE $4 I'LL DONATE $5 I'LL DONATE $8 OTHER AMOUNT The European Court of Human Rights is very selective about the cases it will hear -- and yet judges are even fast-tracking this one. That's how critically important they are seeing it. Because climate change is a severe threat to our fundamental human rights -- and the crisis has never been more urgent. 2020 is now officially the joint-hottest year ever recorded: a year of runaway wildfires, surging floods, and glaciers vanishing before our eyes. Yet it's just a snapshot of the planetary chaos our children will inherit if governments don't act on the science. For years we've been calling for real climate action. This is our chance to force it -- so let's help the kids win! If enough of us chip in, we could: a.. Massively expand and strengthen the legal team to assist attorneys with the trial; b.. Fund ground-breaking research to show how governments are harming our children's futures; c.. Recruit legal aides and researchers to analyse the landslide of documents that government lawyers will submit in days, and; d.. Raise the profile of the trial everywhere by unleashing our best media and campaigning firepower. It's crazy that youngsters should have to do any of this -- but if our movement rushes to back them, we could win a massive victory for the planet and all of humanity! This is the trial for life on earth, and it's about to start -- donate what you can now: I'LL DONATE $2 I'LL DONATE $3 I'LL DONATE $4 I'LL DONATE $5 I'LL DONATE $8 OTHER AMOUNT Time and again, our movement has fought to protect the planet. And we've made magic happen -- helping to win the Paris climate agreement, protecting huge tracts of threatened habitat, and standing behind fearless indigenous communities as they defend life on Earth. The EU wants to make it easier to punish corporations for their destructive actions with a new law. Corporate lobbyists are trying to water it down. We have 3 DAYS to make our voices heard. SIGN NOW Hi, Goi, Ikot Ada Udo and Oruma are small villages in a part of Nigeria called the Niger delta. It is home to proud farmers and fishermen. They ate fish from the creek, farmed their own land, and lived in harmony with the creeks and its surroundings. But when oil was discovered there, Shell moved in, draining all it could from the precious land. And when oil spills ravaged that land, it took 13 YEARS for these communities to win their case in court and hold Shell accountable. [1] This gives hope to all those standing up to big corporations like Shell across the world. But no one should have to wait 13 years for justice. Now the EU wants to create radical new rules which would allow people to seek justice in European courts and make it far easier to punish global businesses for their destructive actions. Corporate lobbyists will try to water them down. But before the EU writes them, they want to know what people in Europe think. This could be our chance. We have until Monday to let them know -- so let?s make it the biggest public consultation ever and pass this historic law against corporation abuses! Sign to keep powerful corporations in check The Delta Niger Community?s fight for justice took years before Shell was brought to court and punished for the terrible harm it had done. And there are many other incredible stories of communities and campaigners working together to bring corporations to justice. But for corporations to be forced to change their bad habits, it has to be easier to make them face justice in court. If the law doesn?t change, corporations will keep on crossing their fingers, hoping to get away with human rights abuses most of the time. We have to change the rules. The European Commission is preparing a new historic law to do so. Companies will be required to investigate their supply chains and make sure they respect rights for people and nature, worldwide. We know that corporate lobbyists prefer business as usual and will be putting pressure on the EU. But there is strong support in the European Parliament and EU leaders want to hear our opinion! The public consultation closes on MONDAY. So it?s time to bring people-powered pressure to flood it and encourage our leaders to do the right thing and make rules to bring companies under control. It takes less than a minute: Sign to to keep powerful corporations under control The Delta Niger communities had the support of incredible organisations like Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and Action Aid. This is the power people have when they come together - they can stand up to big oil like Shell. Now it?s our turn to play a role in this story Vladimir, by changing the rules and pulling the ground out from under the feet of corporations everywhere. Sign the petition 5 000 billion euros, no environmental string attached. The European Central Bank (ECB) is pumping a good chunk of this baffling sum into big polluters, like Shell and Total. But, one person could change everything: Fran?ois Villeroy de Galhau, the governor of the French central bank. He's on the board of the European Central Bank and claims he wants to make it a ?pioneer in the fight against climate change?. Yet, this laudable ambition seems to be nothing but lip service: the governor plans on waiting another "3 to 5 years" to turn his words into action! Our planet can?t wait that long. Let's drive M. Villeroy de Galhau to put his foot down: Mr Governor, do not wait 5 years to act: push the ECB to immediately stop supporting companies destroying the environment! Two months ago, SumOfUs members like you called on governor Villeroy de Galhau to stop investing in coal, shale oil and gas. He listened to us and recently adopted new drastic exclusion measures! While the French central bank recognizes the need to act without delay in France, it digs its heels in at the European level. This is totally inconsistent. Instead of using his influence at the ECB, the governor decides to? do literally nothing. Together, we can push him into action once again. Mr Governor, the Covid crisis is striking Europeans hard, and they refuse to also pay the price for big polluters. Don?t make them go through two crises at once: Ask the ECB to ban polluters once for all! More than 167 000 Europeans already called on the ECB to stop funding climate chaos. The French central bank has a unique opportunity to support your demands and uphold hopes of a fairer and more sustainable future. Call on the French central bank to put its words into actions. It could doom us all. Sign Now Picture every single car, van, and other roadway vehicle throughout the entire European Union, and all their greenhouse gases, combined. Now imagine an industry that produces even more carbon dioxide. That industry is animal farming in Europe. In 2018, every car and van in Europe cumulatively released 656 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. That same year, farm animals and their associated water and land use (including deforestation) accounted for 704 million tonnes of carbon dioxide ? constituting a huge setback in the fight against ever-worsening climate change. We already know that factory farming and other forms of livestock-based agriculture are cruel and promote heinous ways of treating other living creatures. But now we also know it's literally killing us ? and our Earth. Despite that, Europe continues to see a huge rise in meat and dairy production and consumption, which has corresponded to similarly large increases in livestock-related emissions. The science is clear: if Europe doesn't get its livestock agricultural industry in check, it has zero chance of reaching its target levels for reduced emissions. And it could doom the rest of the human race in the process. Tell the European Union: live up to your Paris climate commitments, and reduce your reliance on gaseous meat and dairy products now! Tell the UK not to stop while it's ahead! Sign Now Our world is becoming increasingly inhospitable to wildlife ? pollution, human development and habitat destruction, as well as hunting and trafficking have driven many animal populations to their breaking point. And although this phenomenon is picking up speed, it is not new. For example, due to overhunting and wetland draining, the common crane fully disappeared from the United Kingdom back in the 17th century. But our takeaway from the crane's demise shouldn't be that hope is futile. As of the beginning of 2021, the magnificent bird has made an astounding come back, with experts estimating that there are some 200 birds now thriving in the UK! This is the result of diligent, unrelenting conservation efforts, and a statement from the chairman of the UK Crane Working Group sums it up best: "The return of cranes to the British landscape shows just how resilient nature can be when given the chance." Protected wetlands are vital to the cranes' survival ? 85% of the breeding cranes in the UK are now found on protected reserves. Wetlands also support all types of other wildlife, and provide a vital weapon in our fight against climate change, since wetlands store a great deal of the carbon that would otherwise be polluting our atmosphere. Obviously, protecting wetlands should be a priority. Sign the petition and demand that the UK government pass sweeping wetland protections across the country! We think it may interest you. Hi, When you think 'renewables' you probably think of solar panels and wind turbines. The truth is that in Europe almost 60% of what we call 'renewables' is actually wood and crops. [1] Yes! European dirty coal power plants now burn trees and crops on a mass scale. The EU calls it green energy and subsidises it. We can change this. EU leaders are rethinking the law that allows this to happen. This law is a disaster for the environment. To get the subsidies, enormous businesses which clear our remaining forests and plough the little that remains of our meadows and grasslands are popping up. And our old, dirty, coal plants are magically converted into 'clean energy? plants. All this subsidised with our tax money. Before they change this law, the European Commission wants to know what people in Europe think. We have until tomorrow to tell them. If we show that thousands of taxpayers do not want their money to subsidise burning forests and food, the Commission will be more likely to change the law. Sign and tell the European Commission: don't burn our forests and food. SIGN THE PETITION EU subsidies go to the producers of the ?green fuels?. That?s why perfectly healthy trees are cut, turned into pellets, transported to a power plant and burned as ?green? energy. The area of the forests in Europe, where trees are cut for industrial purposes, increased by 0,37 million hectares in the last decade. [2] Not to mention all the wood imported to the EU from all corners of the world which causes deforestation there. [3] It?s the same with crops, in particular corn: it too, is cut and burned. Because of the subsidies, vast fields of corn are popping up everywhere in Europe, pushing out other crops and destroying our last meadows and grasslands with their unique diversity of plants and flowers, insects and small animals. [4] And the prices of land skyrocket. It makes no sense and yet our tax money supports it. Our community has always cared for Europe?s forests and food production. >From defending forests in Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania [5], to wanting to revolutionise the EU?s agriculture [6], we have mobilised endless times to protect our environment. This time, we can do both at once: save forests and crops from ruthless devastation. SIGN THE PETITION: STOP FAKE RENEWABLES! With a genuine (not fake) green greeting, David (London), Marta (Warsaw), Olga (Bologna) and the entire WeMove team PS: The name of each person signing the petition will be submitted directly to the European Commission in their official consultation process. Message-ID: Hi, Imagine this: Europe is leading the world?s response to the climate crisis, we have a green recovery for people and planet, and dirty coal is starting to be a thing of the past. How do we get there? We need to move the Polish Government. Currently the Polish Government is standing in the way of European progress on the climate crisis. They block crucial votes and they keep producing more and more of the world?s dirtiest fossil fuel, coal. Moving the Polish Government is not easy, but we have a secret weapon: Polish farmers. Farmers are on the frontline of the climate crisis, and are feeling pushed to the limits by their government. Can you help support an innovative new strategy that will bring Polish farmers and young people together to move their government on climate change? It?ll be the last thing the Polish government is expecting and just what we need to unblock them on climate change. We know that the time for bold strategies to fight the climate crisis is now. We?ve already started laying the groundwork for this project. But to fully see it through we need to raise ?15,860. So Vladimir, could you donate a few euros to help get this daring strategy off the ground? I?ll donate ?5 I?ll donate ?10 I?ll donate ?15 I?ll surprise you Here?s where we are so far; we hired a coordinator in Poland and they have already started conversations between farmers and young people. Guess what? There?s a huge willingness to unite forces against a government blocking progress in Poland and in Europe. Here are just a few of the next steps they are considering: a.. Demanding a farmer-friendly law that would encourage climate-friendly farming without taking away money from small farms b.. Connecting climate friendlier farmers with farming collectives and cooperatives as well as providing guidance with setting up their own c.. Supporting small farms in gaining an edge against the industrial farming d.. Providing Climate movements (especially their media teams) with the perspective from farmers' so their work is more synced It?s ambitious, and a strategy like this takes work. We identified eight local leaders active for change in their region. We want to support them, and cover things like phone costs, train tickets, posters and banners. Most importantly we want to train them to give them the skills to make sure they can continue this project beyond our funding. So, Vladimir, will you help fund this ambitious project? Every euro counts to making it succeed! I?ll donate ?5 I?ll donate ?10 I?ll donate ?15 I?ll surprise you With hope, David (London), Olga (Bologna), and the entire WeMove Europe team PS: You can just imagine it; tractors and harvesters, young people and their placards. Together, absolutely unstoppable. The European Union is one of the most important drivers against the climate crisis. But we can only respond as a unified front, so we need to find a way to unblock the Polish Government. And this could be the strategy we need to make it work. Please support this cause: Donate. That's bad news for us. Message-ID: <07AA096F9F3C45939E9F87FE71D60477@lewpostnew> We're killing off sharks. Without them, the oceans may not survive. Sign Now Sharks are one of the most iconic creatures associated with the open waters of the ocean. People all over the world experience awe, wonder, and excitement when thinking about these ancient, prehistoric animals. But also all over the world, these ecologically-vital predators are dying out. Just last month, researchers discovered a terrifying trend: the number of sharks alive in the wild has plummed 71% over the past 50 years. This means that only three out of every 10 sharks we might otherwise expect to see in the world are still around. And one of the huge reasons for this mass die-off is international shark fishing. Also in the past 50 years, the fishing of sharks has surged 300%, and is still very much legal in many parts of the globe. That includes Australia, where it's still legal to kill some of the most threatened and endangered species, including scalloped hammerheads and great whites. Many people think it's okay if sharks die off because they're seen as scary, attack-prone creatures. But even as human populations grow and huge increases of people go sea-bathing, shark attacks have actually declined each year. It's time for government leaders to stand up and help save these precious creatures. Sign the petition urging Australian lawmakers and Prime Minister Scott Morrison to pass legislation immediately banning all shark-fishing, and creating strong new programs to help conserve the sharks that remain! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Without sharks, our ocean ecosystems will be thrown into chaos. So here we are: we made it through the first month of 2021. Many of us had unprecedented struggles to face in the year 2020, and many of us had to adapt the way we lived, interacted and fought for climate justice. If there is one thing that is abundantly clear, it is that no matter how far apart we may feel, we can?t win this fight alone. In the first month of 2021, the world has faced increased climate disasters and injustice, but it has also seen some amazing wins for people power. In this edition, we bring you some reasons to keep fighting, and some reasons to be hopeful. Onwards, Nona and Drue In case you missed it Cancelled pipelines: The Keystone XL pipeline is CANCELLED! On his first day in office, US President Joe Biden cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline, setting a precedent that all permitting decisions must pass a climate test and respect Indigenous rights. This is a massive movement victory of a 10+ year fight thanks to millions of people demanding an end to fossil fuels, and a signal that Biden is following through on his promises to protect people and the planet. Inside story Pakistan coal ban: One of the biggest announcements from last year?s Virtual Climate Ambition Summit was Pakistan?s denouncing of new coal projects. As always with announcements like this, there are questions about the ins and outs of these types of bans and whether they will turn out to have a thousand loopholes. 350 South Asia put the statement into context. Read more about the Pakistan coal ban here. Wins: Last week two local anti-coal fights in Turkey scored big wins. First, the ??rp?lar thermal coal plant project, which would have caused wide-scale destruction on the local ecology, was denied an application to overturn a local court decision to uphold the EIA. Meanwhile, in Northern Anatolia, the local resistance in Bart?n managed to stop a second EIA process of the Amasra Thermal Coal Plant project (after the first was overruled by the State Council). 350 Turkey worked closely with the local groups in both regions that made these victories possible. Use your power Afrika Vuka: 350 Africa is hosting a new series of workshops on winning campaign techniques and tactics, with the hope that the workshop will result in a new wave of large-scale climate actions as we work towards ending the age of fossil fuels and moving to clean, renewable energy. ZOOM - CENN hosted the second Steering Committee meeting established within the framework of the EU ENPARD program supported project "EMBRACE Tsalka" via the online ZOOM platform. The event was attended by representatives of the EU ENPARD program, the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, Tsalka Municipality City hall and ENPARD partner organizations. The purpose of the meeting was to get acquainted with the activities implemented and planned within the project, to discuss existing challenges, exchange information and recommendations, and discuss future cooperation perspectives. The event was opened by CENN?s executive director, Nana Janashia. In the opening part of the meeting, the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili, spoke about the role of EU assistance and the importance of the project "EMBRACE Tsalka". The bottom-up approach and ENPARD IV were discussed by the EU Delegation to Georgia - Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Safety Program Officer and Attach?, George Dehoux. ?I am glad that we were given the opportunity to meet and exchange information again in this new format. The main purpose of our meeting is to share with you the experiences and challenges gained within the project 'EMBRACE Tsalka' and to hear your advice and practices. Representatives of the EU Delegation to Georgia, the Minister of Environment of Georgia, the Deputy Mayor of Tsalka Municipality and our partners are present at the event today. Thank you for attending our event, because your involvement and participation is very important to us. Also, thank you to the EU Delegation to Georgia for both political and financial assistance, as your assistance is very important for better development for both Tsalka and the country itself. The Tsalka project, unlike previous ENPARD projects, focuses on the fourth area in addition to the three existing ones, which involves the integration and empowerment of vulnerable groups. I believe that working in this direction will make the project even more sustainable in the long run, because integration is one of the most important challenges for Tsalka Municipality,? noted Nana Janashia, CENN?s Executive Director. ?Tsalka is a very important municipality close to Tbilisi, but unfortunately, it is less integrated in the Georgian reality and daily life. Tsalka is not discovered, not only by the Georgian population, but also by the people of Tsalka, and it is very important that your project branding 'EMBRACE Tsalka', focuses directly on the municipality and its awareness, because one of the areas that can bring economic prosperity to the municipality should be tourism, especially at a time when the municipality has a really great tourism potential, due to its beautiful nature and location. When we talk about rural development, we often see other economic activities besides agriculture, and local initiatives supported by the European Union and the 'EMBRACE Tsalka' project, be it cattle breeding, entrepreneurship or tourism, are very important for local economic growth and development. The EU practice in strengthening LAGs has shown great success and it is a priority for us to concentrate on strengthening LAGs in the ENPAD IV phase,? stated Levan Davitashvili, Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia. ?The LAG and LEADER approach is something very typical for the EU, but we thought it would be very relevant for Georgia. What we see here is that each of you has a very different context and reason to exist and one of the most important messages is that even though it is the EU program and the EU concept, it is extremely important that you make it your own and that it is being done at two levels. One at which we are constantly discussing with the ministry in terms of global policy at the level of the country but also at each municipal and local level, one side does not fit all in this approach, the concept is the same but the way you implement it is different. This is where these kinds of meetings are extremely useful to exchange our practices and discuss different approaches with our colleagues, partners, beneficiaries and governing bodies,? noted Georges Dehux, Attach?, Programme Officer Agriculture, Fisheries & Food Safety, Delegation of the European Union to Georgia. Within the meeting, the Tsalka Local Action Group (LAG) Co-Chair and Project Manager introduced presentations and talked about the project progress and challenges. Time was also given to the presentation of the climate change assessment created within the project. ?We are pleased that our important strategic partner, the European Union, is providing us with great financial and political support at the local level as well, enabling us to implement modern, European approaches and establish exemplary practices of cooperation between the state and non-governmental sectors. From the start of the project, we have expressed a desire to establish good practices in working with the project and the LAG, and we are pleased that the willingness to collaborate is great on both sides. This is proven by the Memorandum of Understanding between the City Hall, LAG and CENN signed in July 2020. The activities of the EU and Tsalka LAG are really aimed at creating a better and more sustainable future. We welcome the existence of the LAG and declare our readiness to cooperate with this group, and this year we have already identified up to 10 issues of joint cooperation and will do our best to be responsible within City Hall,? said Jambul Khozhrevanidze, the deputy mayor of Tsalka Municipality. During the meeting, a panel discussion was held during which the participants were introduced to the planned activities by Nodar Kereselidze, UNDP National Project Manager in Georgia, and Juba Maruashvili, National Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) ENPARD Grant Management Expert. At the end of the meeting, the participants agreed on the implementation of activities in cooperation with the current projects and the availability of opportunities. The project ?EMBRACE Tsalka? is implemented under the European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD) by the EU?s partner organization CENN, in partnership with the Georgian Farmers? Association (GFA) and German partner organization ? Institute for Rural Development Research (IfLS). The project aims at diversifying local economic activities, improving the investment climate, and empowering competitive agricultural and environmental practices in Keda Municipality via bottom-up strategic planning of rural development. The EU is supporting agriculture and rural development in Georgia through its ENPARD Programme. Implemented since 2013 with a total budget of EUR 179.5 million, the main goal of ENPARD is to reduce rural poverty in Georgia. The first phase of ENPARD in Georgia focused on developing the potential of agriculture. The second and third phases of ENPARD focus on creating economic opportunities for rural population that go beyond agricultural activities. More information on ENPARD is available at: www.enpard.ge. Message-ID: <5727265302E2426FA4BDB7939FE0742F@evol.sp.ru> Tracking technology that protects endangered animals is being hacked by blood-thirsty poachers Sign Now As if the murder of endangered wild animals couldn't get worse ? now people are getting away with it using their phones. It's a new phenomenon called "cyberpoaching" and it involves hacking into high-tech systems operated by conservation teams in order to keep wildlife safe. Animal protection teams often use encrypted messages to track the GPS coordinates of these precious animals, to monitor their whereabouts and safety, and that's the same data that poachers covet. So malignant hackers use all their savvy skills to crack these encryptions revealing the locations of these vulnerable animals to those who seek to kill them. Even though hunting endangered species is illegal in most places, these animals' skins, bones, fur, and more are highly sought-after prizes. Experts estimate that the illegal trade in wildlife bodies accounts for more than $20 billion in criminal profits every single year. Luckily, "good guy" hackers have created a system called "Hack the Poacher" to help stop animal-murderers in their tracks. Using poachers' cell phones and radio frequencies, this system can actually detect a poacher's presence and alert nearby patrols. We need to make sure this team gets as much funding as they can, so they can provide this vital software to every wildlife conservation team in the world. Tell the United States and European Union to provide much-needed funding for this Hack the Poacher platform, so we can find the poachers ? before they find and destroy irreplaceable wildlife! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. If we don't act fast, these poachers and their hacker friends will get more and more sophisticated, breaking through all manner of cyber-protections set up to keep endangered wildlife safe. Message-ID: <40A04BC7A23F49A4B6E1319891FEB279@evol.sp.ru> While Big Pharma rakes in the profits, the poorest countries can't afford life-saving COVID-19 vaccines Sign Now We all know the drill. Pharmaceutical medicines cost an arm and a leg because Big Pharma companies claim it's necessary in order to compensate them for all the costs of research and experimentation required to come up with these treatments in the first place. Under this system, it's considered inevitable that some people can afford medications while others can't, and must face the consequences. But when it comes to poorer countries in the COVID-19 era, such profiteering arguments are morally untenable. A murderous pandemic should never be seen as another "ripe opportunity" to exort the world's most vulnerable, impoverished people. This is literally life or death. COVID-19 is a pandemic that has taken more than 2.3 million lives worldwide. In this environment, pharmaceutical remedies ? specifically, vaccines manufactured by giant international conglomerates like Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson ? are absolute must-haves. In some nations on earth, it's hard enough to come by clean drinking water, let alone clean personal protective equipment like masks and gloves. Now, giant multinational corporations are literally dangling a miracle inoculation over the heads of citizens in these countries. And they're saying "pay up... or else." This is beyond cruel and unethical. Tell Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, and AstraZeneca to do the right thing by providing poorer countries with vaccines at-cost ? with no profit-gauging baked in. Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Wealthy, industrialized nations are competing to accrue as many vaccines as possible, while poorer countries are left behind. OPINION: Female child soldiers often go unseen but must not be forgotten Lovers of the mega-bands are launching online campaigns to raise funds and awareness in response to disasters and deforestation - and hope their idols will join them * Tech-savvy fans use social media to spur change * K-pop sensation Blackpink promotes COP26 climate summit * Campaigns help disaster-hit communities, protect forests By Beh Lih Yi Feb 3 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - From petitioning to save forests to raising cash for disaster victims, a growing army of K-pop fans worldwide has emerged as the latest force in the global fight against climate change. Young and tech-savvy, K-pop lovers have used their social media power to take up political causes, including mobilising funds for the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States last year and supporting Thailand's pro-democracy protests. But the group is now increasingly vocal on climate change, shining a youth spotlight on environmental issues that get relatively little attention in some parts of the world. "K-pop fans are mostly millennials and from the Gen-Z generation - we want to fight for our future," said Indonesian student Nurul Sarifah, 21, who set up the Kpop4Planet movement in mid-January. Using social media, it aims to become a platform for like-minded K-pop fans around the world to discuss and raise awareness on climate-change issues affecting their home cities, said Sarifah, a fan of top South Korean boyband EXO. "Every day we are experiencing these effects: pollution, heatwaves, floods, wildfires. We can change this by doing good, just like how our idols did, so we can enjoy K-pop on a liveable planet," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone. The movement is just one of the latest campaigns by K-pop fans seeking to make a difference for nature and the climate. PM00 : 02 / 02 : 02YO STAR POWER As K-pop became a global phenomenon in the last two decades, the philanthropic efforts of its South Korean stars - from donating to orphanages to planting trees - have pushed fans to adopt similar approaches to social and environmental problems. Climate change has become an increasingly important issue and was highlighted in December when K-pop global sensation Blackpink released a video to raise awareness ahead of the U.N. climate summit, COP26, due to take place in Glasgow in November. In it, the girl band told their nearly 60 million subscribers on YouTube it was not too late to act on climate change and urged their fans, known as BLINKs, to learn more. The COP26 talks are widely viewed as a make-or-break moment for the 2015 Paris Agreement, with governments under pressure to submit stronger climate action plans to limit global warming to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times. Fans of the mega-band BTS, known as ARMY, meanwhile have planted tens of thousands of trees in recent years, from South Korea to the Philippines in the name of their celebrities. They also raised funds for flood-hit communities in the Indian state of Assam last year. "K-pop fandom does great things beyond borders and generations," said South Korean activist Kim Na-yeon, 15, from campaign group Youth 4 Climate Action, which last year sued the Korean government for being slow to tackle climate change. Awareness is low in South Korea, she said, adding that she connects with other fans through their shared love for K-pop and taps into the network to advocate for climate action. "As I have been a K-pop fan for a long time, I know how people are gathering and moving online, so I am using my skills for our campaign," said Kim, a fan of boyband NCT Dream. Volunteers send relief items donated by Indonesian fans of South Korean mega-band BTS to earthquake victims in West Sulawesi province, Indonesia. HANDOUT/BTS Army INA Project The diverse backgrounds of K-pop followers - from North America to Asia - are seen as key to engaging fans in deeper discussions on a range of contemporary issues. "K-pop fans are generally open-minded and outward-facing in their approach to the world. If they weren't, they'd listen to music from their own country in their own local language," said CedarBough Saeji, an academic who studies K-pop fan culture. "It shouldn't be surprising that they also share their views on their own local political, social and environmental issues," added the assistant professor in East Asian languages and cultures at Indiana University Bloomington in the United States. John Lie, a sociology professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who authored a book about K-pop, said the phenomenon was driven by fans seeking to show the genre is "not mere mindless entertainment" and is "rare in idol music". DISASTER RELIEF In Indonesia, K-pop fans mobilised quickly to raise nearly $100,000 in January for those affected by floods in South Kalimantan and a powerful earthquake on Sulawesi island that killed about 80 people and displaced more than 30,000. With climate change expected to fuel extreme weather disasters including in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of 270 million, Arendeelle, a K-pop fan who helped initiate the recent fundraising effort, said she was prepared to do more. "We care about the environment. We are inspired by our idols who have shown us their utmost concerns about society," said Arendeelle, who goes by one name and is a coordinator of ELF Indonesia, the local fan club of K-pop group Super Junior. Kang Lucia, fan of K-pop boy band BTS, takes a selfie at a cafe decorated with photos and merchandise of them, in Seoul, South Korea, September 24, 2020. REUTERS/Heo Ran Indonesian K-pop fans last year also helped boost an online campaign to highlight rapid deforestation in Papua, by sharing the #SavePapuanForest hashtag on social media and making it a trending topic on Twitter. Such momentum is what Sarifah of Kpop4Planet seeks to spur in her push for more debate on climate change and its impacts. "Deforestation is one of the reasons why these natural disasters happen," she said. "It is relatable to all of us." Sarifah said she hoped EXO and other K-pop stars would lend their support to her green campaign. "The K-pop fan movement is big and if our idols also help (on climate justice), it will become even bigger," she added. Sign Now The largest owls on the entire planet are one step away from extinction. Residing in Russia and Japan, fewer than 1,900 individual Blakiston's fish owls are left alive in the world, and only around 400 living completely wild. These creatures are an awesome sight to behold, with an adult wingspan around six feet wide ? the height of many adult humans! These sweet animals match up in pairs for life, and they call back-and-forth to their mates in beautiful "duets" that last for hours on end. But now, their duets could go completely silent. Climate change and logging-induced habitat loss have been ravaging this species. Their main homes are inside dead trees within old-growth forests. But such forests are prime chopping spots for logging companies eager to gobble up as much timber for profit as possible. That's why experts are begging government officials to take action to curb logging in old-growth forests now! Otherwise, the Blakiston's fish owls will be the world's largest no more. Tell authorities in Russia and Japan to protect the critically-endangered Blakiston's fish owls' habitat and save them before it's too late! Thank you, Miranda The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Message-ID: <0559D65542E348EDABCED7D6BC2F882B@lewpostnew> UN Climate Change ?Global Climate Action 16 February 2021 NEWSLETTER Race to Zero Transformative Mining It?s long been seen as one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize. On the one hand zero-carbon alternatives for metals and mining are still in the early development stages; on the other hand production of minerals such as graphite, lithium and cobalt could rise by nearly 500 percent by 2050 with the boom in batteries, solar panels and other tech, according to the World Bank. And yet the system transformation is clearly underway here, too - driven by both the supply and demand sides of the industry. Leading miners and metals manufacturers have recently expressed ambition to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner, including Anglo American, BHP, Glencore, Rio Tinto, Vale and China Baowu Steel. Expressing the goal is a significant first step. To remain credible, it must next be backed up with firm commitments and science-based plans for getting there. These come as customers are increasingly demanding a shift to climate-smart minerals and metals. Car companies including General Motors, Ford Motor Company, BMW and Daimler have set targets for all-electric sales and zero-emission vehicles within three decades. Steel buyers and specifiers in construction, renewables and other sectors have formed the SteelZero initiative, supported by the Climate Group, to push for net-zero steel by 2050. Hauliers, consumer goods companies and others created the European Clean Trucking Alliance for zero-emission trucks by 2050. This corporate demand adds to the pressure from national and local policymakers. The UK will ban diesel and petrol cars from 2030, California from 2035, and cities around the world are joining forces to halve emissions this decade. The foundation is set. Creating the right political and financial environment can help metals and mining companies accelerate the shift to clean technologies and energy sources - including by removing fossil fuel subsidies and supporting higher carbon prices. A price of over US$100 per tonne by 2030 would underpin the business case for products like low-carbon steel in harder-to-abate sectors, according to the Mission Possible Partnership. Affordable renewable electricity and green hydrogen development will also be key for energy-intensive operations. BHP aims to replace coal-fired power at two large copper mines in Chile with 100 percent renewables by the mid-2020s. The Green Hydrogen Catapult, launched in December with green hydrogen project developers and partners, is working to deploy 25 gigawatts through 2026 to decarbonize sectors like long-haul shipping. South Korea?s POSCO and Australia?s Fortescue have joined forces to develop renewables-based hydrogen, and Sweden?s LKAB will use it to produce CO2-free iron ore by 2045. The challenge, as always, is to make this a globally inclusive, all-of-society transformation - and that means bringing artisanal miners and rare earths processors along for a just transition to sustainability and respecting human rights, too. Climate Action Saves Lives The research continues to mount: pollution is cutting our lives short, and climate action will save lives. Two reports out this month add depth to those two realities. More than 8 million people around the world died prematurely in 2018 as a result of air pollution from coal, oil and gas - many more than previously thought, researchers in the US and UK found. That?s just under one in five global deaths that year. The northeast US, Europe and Southeast Asia were the worst hit. Yet if nine large economies - Brazil, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, the UK and US - brought their Nationally Determined Contributions in line with the Paris Agreement?s goals, they would save some 10 million lives per year by 2040, from cleaner air, increased exercise and better diets, according to the Lancet Planetary Health. It could destroy entire ecosystems. A majority of Europeans are against it. We need world leaders to ban it. Send them a message before they meet tomorrow. Take action now Hi, Scientists warned us that it?s too risky to start using gene drive technology because it could destroy entire ecosystems. You?ve been part of this fight and already helped get our MEPs on our side. Now a recent poll shows that the vast majority of Europeans agree. [1] We all want scientific progress and to eradicate diseases. Gene drives could play a role. [2] But right now the risks are too high. With what we know about gene drives so far, their effects cannot be predicted, stopped or reversed. We need to understand it before we mess with it! Tomorrow, global leaders are meeting to discuss the technology at one of the most important preparatory UN conferences worldwide. It?s our chance to voice our concerns to ensure global leaders know that the vast majority of Europeans don?t want gene drives released until we fully know the risks. We?ll have the support of our partners who will present our message at the meeting. We can give their message much more power if we contact decision makers directly as well. Send an EMAIL now! Send a TWEET now! Did you know that there are already organisations planning the release of gene drives into nature in Burkina Faso? [3] More of these risky experiments are planned in Uganda, Mali and Ghana. [4] These experiments have consequences for all of us. No company or foundation should be allowed to decide without oversight on the future of entire ecosystems. We can stop them with a global ban. Each country that calls for a ban is one step towards a win. This Thursday, experts and decision makers will discuss important questions in preparation for the key UN meeting that will take place this autumn. The EU will play an important role to convince other countries to ban gene drives. But that is not enough: sharing your voice via Twitter or email can make all the difference. Send an EMAIL now! Send a TWEET now! We and more than 200 organisations worldwide are calling for a global moratorium on the release of gene drive organisms to protect biodiversity. [5] Together we have already moved European Members of Parliament. It was a big win. [6] They agree with us that this technology is too risky to be released into nature. Now we have a chance to move world leaders. For that we need your action. It only takes a few minutes. Thank you, David (London), Annemarie (Berlin), and the entire WeMove Europe team PS: The YouGov poll WeMove members helped fund shows that 65% - 82% of Europeans across 8 countries agree that environmental releases of gene drive organisms should be postponed until there is scientific proof that their release would not harm biodiversity, human health, agriculture or peace. Sign Now The stories coming out of Texas this week are difficult to read and watch. A slew of winter storms have knocked out power for large swaths of the state for coming up on a week as of the time of this writing. Without electricity, people are freezing in near zero temperatures. They have no way to cook, the roads are too dangerous to travel, and food is running low. Burst pipes are flooding people's homes and roofs are falling in. It is a literal natural disaster and Texans are being abandoned. Sign the petition to demand the federal government steps in to save lives now! The reason this is such a natural disaster is multifactoral but boil down to two main things: Texas is on their own energy grid and they have hardly any regulation. Most of the United States, and even the world, are on shared grids so that if power goes out in one region, power can be diverted and shared. Texas stands alone so nearby states can't help them. They became independent to avoid government safety regulations, some of which may have required them to winterize their equipment, thus avoiding this entire humanitarian crisis. Now many people in Texas are freezing in their homes and don't even have access to clean drinking water anymore. Biden did authorize FEMA to go in and help, but clearly it's not enough. This is a massive disaster and the federal government should be doing more to save the lives of Texans! Thank you, Kelsey The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Take the poll In the United States, freedom of the press is a human right that we often take for granted but in other parts of the world, this is not the case. China has imposed some of the most restrictive media laws and sanctions in the world on Hong Kong and its own media organizations. Earlier today, Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai was denied bail after his arrest in August 2020. He was arrested under the oppressive National Security Law which China imposed on the island democracy and has been deemed by many experts as a violation of the ?One Country, Two Systems?. Before this, China banned BBC newsrooms, legislated a suppressive campaign against independent bloggers and used state-run media to spread misinformation inside and outside China. This is why Hong Kong and China both need press freedom. It is an essential human right and a fundamental tenant of democracy. Read more about China?s oppression of the media HERE. To build their case, they need a multidisciplinary team of scientists, lawyers and technicians. And they don?t have much time, the court date is set for March. A recent study found that thousands of babies died from pesticide poisoning in Brazil, after glyphosate in surrounding soy fields leaked into the local water supply. The facts are clear, but these mothers have their work cut out for them. Monsanto won?t give up easily and will do anything they can to make sure it can still line its coffers with profits from glyphosate. But this is why I feel hopeful for Sof?a?s fight: Incredible members like you have proven countless times that people can win over corporate profit. Thanks to your support, Dewayne Lee Johnson became the first person to beat Bayer in a U.S. court over allegations that Monsanto?s Roundup causes cancer -- and French farmer Paul Fran?ois, who was poisoned by Monsanto?s toxic chemicals, was able to win his case against Bayer-Monsanto after you paid for him to attend Bayer?s Shareholder Meeting. Now, Sofia and her community need your support. Every extra coin we raise will power our campaigning against the pesticide industry -- and fight for bans across the world. Tell New York to ban this cruel food! Sign Now Foie gras is a duck liver pat?? that is highly revered among foodies for its rich taste and texture. But in order to produce this delicacy, gruesome horrors are required. Locked in small cages where they are unable to escape or even move, captive ducks are then restrained while workers plunge a tube down their throats, which will remain strapped to them for weeks. Then, farm workers shove up to 30 pounds of food per week through the tubes, forcing the animals to gorge far more than any duck would naturally consume. This force-feeding causes some of the ducks to become so painfully swollen, they can't even stand up. The practice is so horrifying that several U.S. states and New York City have already prohibited the sale of foie gras. But the larger New York state has yet to ban this cruel item from restaurant menus. In fact, Hudson Valley Foie Gras in New York is the nation's largest foie gras farm. The company claims they use best practices and are "concerned" for the animals' welfare but there is no such thing as "ethical" versions of foie gras. This animal torture must be banned immediately. Sign the petition and tell New York lawmakers to outlaw foie gras throughout the whole state! Thank you for all that you do, Miranda B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. One particularly vulnerable group of animals are those rescued creatures living in sanctuaries where their normal habitats are outside. As snow, ice, and sub-freezing temperatures descended on the Primarily Primates sanctuary, staff desperately rushed to try and save the facility's chimpanzees, lemurs, baboons, macaques, monkeys, and more. Approximately 32 animals are now being kept in bedrooms heated with generators, but the organization is fast running out of supplies. Primarily Primates and other sanctuaries are now terrified that the powerless animals they care for could all die from the cold. In fact, the organization has already lost upwards of 12 animals as a result of power losses and medical emergencies. With roads closed off, staff are sleeping in their cars to stay warm and keep nearby in case the animals need them. But they're also begging the public for help, pleading for extra generators, propane tanks, and food and water for both animals and staff alike. If they don't get this help, dozens more animals could die. Texas lawmakers have an obligation to their people and also to the animals living there. Add your name to call the others to pull out and stop this treaty! Sign NOW Hi, After years of mobilisation, lawsuits against their government, thousands of people in the streets: our friends in the Netherlands have won. Their government heard their voices and decided to phase out coal. It is a message of hope for all of us who aspire to live in a world where we protect what is most precious: our planet. But a German fossil fuel giant and coal plant owner is using a little-known treaty to sue the Netherlands and claim about 1.4 billion euros in compensation. [1] And no EU country is safe from such an attack. This treaty - The Energy Charter Treaty, allows fossil fuel giants to sue any of our governments for changing their energy policies even if it means that our planet and future generations will suffer. Next week EU countries will start key talks on the future of this dangerous treaty. Although countries like Germany are dragging their feet, a growing number of powerful countries such as France and Spain are already calling on the EU to pull out. [2] We need other EU countries to join the revolt. To do this we have partnered with dozens of organisations across Europe and journalists who will reveal shocking stories to build the media pressure. Join the people power wave to stop this treaty! SIGN NOW The Energy Charter Treaty is a blast from the past, from a period of governments' climate denial. [3] Yet, fossil fuel companies are clinging to it for dear life because it means they can protect their profits. But protecting their profits means suing governments who dare put people and planet first. And when they win, governments have to pay compensation: our hard-earned taxes. It?s already cost Spanish citizens almost 1 billion euros. [3] Now the rage and resistance against this treaty is growing everywhere in Europe. France, Spain, and several MEPs from across the political spectrum are calling Europe to pull out of the treaty. Other powerful countries like Austria, the Netherlands, and Belgium are moving in our direction. [4] What we need now is a movement, people taking action across Europe. Next week is key, but just the start. Let?s start with a bang. ADD YOUR NAME This is not the first time that we Europeans will come together to fight the power of big corporations. A few years ago, we beat the biggest investment and trade treaty between the US and Europe - the famous TTIP. It took a lot of effort: 3.5 million signatures, and hundreds of thousands of people in the streets. But we took on the corporations, the lobbyists, 28 governments and WE WON. Now let?s do it again with this treaty which gives full power to fossil fuel industries. A vicious armed conflict of landmines and airstrikes has devastated the population, triggering a humanitarian crisis like no other. Yet while international government aid is dismally low, there are signs of hope. US president Biden is taking steps that could accelerate critical funding and fuel global efforts to end the war -- but it could come too late for many. We need an emergency response, now. As of December, 100,000 children under the age of five are so severely malnourished that they could die if they do not receive urgent treatment. Medics, volunteers, and humanitarian groups are trying to fill the gaps -- but they just don't have enough. We can help them do more, and if we all chip in now, we could: a.. Help fund critical medical facilities in devastated areas of Yemen; b.. Provide life-saving food aid for thousands of desperate families; c.. This is particularly true in environmental sectors that tend to be low priorities for law enforcement and governments. These professionals also bring skills and relationships to bear that can shed light on corruption in natural resource management (NRM). Join us for a TNRC Virtual Panel to discuss how investigative journalists approach investigations in environmental sectors to uncover corruption, and how NRM practitioners and journalists can cooperate, inform and learn from each other, particularly in settings where corruption makes it less desirable to report to government. Experts will share their stores, experience, and best practices for being effective in spite of corrupt environments. But we have new evidence that could force Siemens to reconsider. Can you help build a global outcry to show Siemens that the risks of this mine are too big to ignore? Sign the petition Time is running out to stop one of the biggest new coal mines in the world. Despite years of opposition and delay, the Adani Carmichael mine could be exporting massive shiploads of dirty coal through the Great Barrier Reef in as little as six months. But to become operational, the Adani mine relies on a key piece of train signalling technology that only German engineering giant Siemens is willing to provide. We?ve been fighting for over a year to get Siemens to reconsider its support for the Adani mine. And now we finally have the evidence we need: at least four environmental breaches that could trigger the exit clause in Siemens? contract with Adani. This is a crucial opportunity. With your help, we can flood Siemens with evidence of these breaches. By making this headline news across the world, you can force Siemens to stick to its word and review the contract. SIGN the petition: Siemens, stick to your word and recognise the environmental impacts of Adani?s coal mine. Last year, as Australia burned in one of its worst ever bushfire seasons, thousands of SumOfUs members were part of a massive global effort led by indigenous Traditional Owners to urge Siemens to rule out work on the toxic Adani mine. Despite the massive global outcry, Siemens said it was bound by its word and went ahead with the contract. But there was a catch: your efforts helped force the Siemens CEO to ?secure the right to pull out of the contract if our customer violates very stringent environmental obligations?. Vladimir, we didn?t have the proof we needed then, but now we do. Four environmental breaches against Adani have been upheld. And more are now under investigation. Last year the Wangan and Jagalingou people - the Traditional Owners of the land on which Adani is building its mine - warned Siemens of exactly this. That Adani has no regard for their ancestral lands and waterways. These breaches are only the first evidence of this. If Siemens helps Adani complete this mine who knows how many more Adani will commit. Add your voice and tell Siemens it?s time to act. The campaign to stop the Adani Carmichael mine has been one of the most effective grassroots corporate campaigns ever. Pressure from people across the world has forced more than 90 companies to walk away from the project. But despite this, Adani is still stumbling towards the finish line. And Siemens is one of the few companies left which is helping it to get there. Send Siemens a message now that Adani?s mine is a cost to the climate we cannot afford. Tell Facebook to listen to indigenous communities who live there and stop stolen land being advertised on its Marketplace, NOW. Sign the petition For sale on Facebook: Brazil?s Amazon rainforest. A groundbreaking BBC investigation has just revealed that plots of Amazon rainforest -- including national forests and land reserved for indigenous peoples -- is being sold illegally via Facebook?s classified ads service, Marketplace. And Facebook doesn?t seem to want to do much about it. Fuelled by the cattle ranching industry, and in the knowledge that remote locations won?t be inspected by the authorities, ?investors? are clearing forest ready for farming and selling it off. Facebook, once again, is hiding behind its usual excuse that it ?requires buyers and sellers to comply with laws and regulations?. But really, does it expect land invaders willing to steal land from indigenous communities to care about its toothless policy? Facebook: stop land invaders from selling stolen land on Marketplace! Indigenous communities like the Uru Eu Wau Wau people rely on the land to hunt, fish and collect fruits. But with deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon at a 10-year high, continued land grabs are described by community leader Bitat? Uru Eu Wau Wau as an attempt ?to deforest our lives?. To make matters worse, those involved in the illegal land market do so expecting the Bolsonaro government will declare an amnesty on the stolen land. Once they?ve deforested it they plead with politicians to abolish its protected status, on the basis it no longer serves its original purpose. Then they can legalise their claims. And Facebook Marketplace has become their go-to site to sell plots up to the size of 1,000 football pitches. Facebook: stop land crimes from being committed on your platform. It's killing our environment. Sign Now If you use a smartphone, you know that they don't last as long as they should given their steep price. In fact, the manufacturers want it that way. They build smartphones that die frequently so that people will be forced to buy new ones more often. But producing smartphones is extremely taxing on our environment: mining, transportation, refining and working with the necessary chemicals all create a massive carbon footprint. Given this high environmental cost, they must be built to last longer to decrease the impact and France has a piece of legislation that would help. Sign the petition to support France's effort to regulate this wasteful cycle! Almost half of the entire world population uses a smartphone ? approximately 3.5 billion people. In the U.S., the average person gets a new phone every 1.8 years. These devices are pouring into landfills, often in poorer and developing countries, poisoning people and wildlife, while the processes of creating more to fill their places are funneling greenhouse gasses into our already warming atmosphere. But it doesn't need to be this way! This landmark legislation from France could be the first step in setting a new precedent in supply and demand for smartphones ? the fate of Earth depends on it. Right now, HSBC is Europe?s second-largest fossil fuel financier. But a group of major shareholders has forced a vote at an upcoming AGM that could stop the bank from investing in coal projects and companies ? starting now. This would be one of the biggest climate victories in recent memory. And HSBC is under unprecedented pressure, from major investors to activists at branches. Insiders say that top execs will decide in the next 48 hours whether to endorse the move -- or try to water it down. We can?t miss this chance! Send a message to key decision-makers: HSBC: Break up with coal, now! HSBC has long given lip service to climate change, but since the Paris agreement was signed, it has pumped $87 billion into fossil fuels. Even now, the CEO is talking a good game, promising to wean off of coal. But the plan has no specifics, and is simply not fast enough. Now over 100 institutional and private investors ? representing over $2.4 trillion in assets ? have changed the game. They?re putting enormous pressure on HSBC to pass a resolution at the AGM that will force the bank to put an expiration date on coal and fossil fuels. The bank is preparing a response, and the next 48 hours will determine what they do. If execs are convinced not to water it down ? HSBC could be a massive domino to stopping coal financing forever. Our climate future could be riding on this ? send an urgent message to HSBC's CEO and Chairman: HSBC: end coal financing ASAP! Coal is the deadliest fossil fuel. It wrecks communities, pollutes water, and ruins the air we breathe. New projects are very likely to impact frontline communities already experiencing the worst of the climate crisis. Sign now with one click: Sign now To world governments and all signatories to the Energy Charter Treaty: As world citizens, we call on you to pull out of the Energy Charter Treaty and stop its expansion to other countries. The treaty is incompatible with the Paris Climate Agreement, and it allows coal, oil and gas corporations to obstruct our transition to a clean energy future. It?s time to disarm fossil fuel firms now, so they can no longer impede urgent climate action and put their interest above our public health and security. Sign now This terrible treaty is basically the exact opposite of the Paris Climate Agreement. It punishes governments for moving off fossil fuels, and keeps us marching into a deadly future of drowning cities, wildfires, and a catastrophic loss of life. Take Italy: When it banned oil drilling off its coast, a British company sued the government for almost $300 million -- nine times more than the company had even invested. That's precious tax money that could otherwise have been used for renewable energy, schools, or hospitals. And so no matter where you are in the world, this treaty affects you.
