From 24-26 December, CENN organized a media tour in the municipalities of Keda and Abasha within the ?Promoting Sustainable Forest Management for Rural Development" project. The purpose of the media tour was to introduce the stakeholders to energy consumption and production alternatives to timber and also, raise public awareness about energy efficient technologies. During the tour, media representatives and journalists visited public schools in Keda, which were equipped with energy efficient technologies within the "Promoting Sustainable Forest Management for Rural Development? and ?EU-Keda? projects. Furthermore, the media representatives visited LLC ?Marani? energy plantations in Abasha, where the journalists found out about the planting and follow up processes at the plantations. The project is being implemented for a third year with financial support provided by the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC). But everyday they are being matched by literally thousands of people joining the great battle for life on earth. We are steadily marching to a crescendo of people power, reaching social tipping points that could radically, beautifully transform our world for good. Because it's not just climate change, we also need to overcome increasing social polarisation, billions can't access life-saving covid vaccines, and global inequality is rocketing. If there was ever a moment for people to change the course of history, it is now. So we urgently need Avaaz to grow even bigger, both in our own work and our support for others, and if we raise enough we will: a.. Partner with other inspiring movements, scientists, and public health experts to turbocharge our combined power for maximum impact. The plan is ambitious, but there is simply nothing more important. I'm not going to be shy about this: There is nothing I love more than when our movements for justice win. Repealing Trump's Muslim Ban, slamming Big Tech in the media, and scaring the wits out of the far-right every time a Muslim uses their right-to-vote for a better future. The only thing sweeter than that is making it all happen with MPower Change members like you. I don't care if that sounds corny, it's absolutely true and we need your help to keep winning. Today is a beautiful opportunity to make a donation in solidarity with MPower Change's vision for a future free from systemic Islamophobia. Donations as small as $5 help power the teams and tech we need to run our trainings, voter mobilizations, and rapid response campaigns against Islamophobia. Will you chip in? CHIP IN $3CHIP IN $5CHIP IN $20CHIP IN $100Since 2016, MPower Change members and our ally communities have been building towards the kinds of wins we were able to witness this last year. In the first few weeks of 2021, President Biden ended the Muslim travel ban on his very first day in office ? and multiple news outlets name-checked MPower Change as a key driver towards this historic moment. We reshaped the conversation on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with our partners in the #BigTechSellsWar project ? making major news headlines about how Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have profited from the so-called "war on terror." We were a founding partner in the #FacebookWeNeedToTalk campaign which successfully forced Facebook to step back from categorizing use of the words "zionism" or "zionist" as hate speech. And that?s just the beginning?in recent weeks we've also: a.. Our #FreeThemAll campaign successfully pressured ICE to release several members of our community that have been unjustly detained; b.. Launched a #NoTechForApartheid open letter of support to Google and Amazon workers who are protesting their companies' participation in a one billion dollar contract with the Israeli government; c.. Launched #GazaIsPalestine with a People's inquiry, including Representative Rashida Tlaib and activist Mohammed El-Kurd, on the May 2021 assault on, and ongoing siege, of Gaza; d.. Held our fifth annual National Muslim Voter Registration Day, laying the groundwork for making 2022 a historic year for Muslim voter outreach and civic engagement; e.. Joined CAIR and Demand Progress in helping tens of thousands of engaged members contact their member of Congress, demanding we end the PATRIOT Act for good; f.. Teamed up with Amnesty International and the Center For Constitutional Rights in launching an ongoing campaign to #CloseGuantanamo before its 20th anniversary in 2022, including a delivery action at the White House; g.. Directed MPower Change members, with the help of U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, Adalah, and others, to take action on vaccine apartheid and medical apartheid, both as it impacts Palestinians and people across the global south; h.. Inaugurated our second ever #DigitalRamadan, ensuring we can still connect online and build community even amidst a pandemic. I think we're living in a paradoxical moment. On one hand, we see real signs that things are changing: the narrative on Israel and Palestine is changing in public consciousness and in the media. Troops are being withdrawn from Afghanistan, effectively ending a two decade long U.S. military occupation. Unapologetic Muslims and progressives are building political power in places where it was once thought to be unimaginable. But on the other hand, the human toll of our existing struggles only continues to grow: from Gaza, to marginalized communities targeted by racist cops and incarceration, to those facing the harshest price of vaccine inequity and climate injustice. We know we need to step it up in every direction and that's exactly what we plan to do ? but we can't get there without you. With your support, 2022 will be a defining year for MPower Change. We plan to grow our presence on Capitol Hill, lobbying daily to law-makers and ensuring Muslim, Black, and brown communities' needs are represented. We are already in the works with starting our very first MPower Changemakers school ? a leadership development program for young Muslim organizers to get skilled up into the leaders we desperately need. I need to know: can we count on your support to help us step it up in 2022? If someone forwarded you this email, subscribe for free here. In our top read this week, BBC Future's Aida Alami looks at how Morocco became known for its vast, world-leading solar arrays. Morocco has made a name for itself as a climate leader. Renewables make up almost two-fifths of its electricity capacity, some fossil fuel subsidies have been phased out and the country lays claim to some of the world's largest clean energy projects. The country has received much praise for its actions to decarbonise. The country's reputation may be well deserved, but it still faces real challenges ? its geographical position in a warming hotspot makes it vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. And even as it seeks to end its dependence on fossil fuels, its energy demands are rising fast. Despite these challenges, Morocco has a huge natural potential to produce solar, wind and hydropower, and has taken significant steps to realise it. Morocco's national action on climate change dates back to the mid-2000s, when the country made the decision to become a regional leader in clean energy and to push forward massive renewables projects. The country's leaders bet on these major transformations as a way to be economically competitive in the future, as well as to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and ensure security of energy supply. Our Current Efforts Are Failing to Protect Elephants, Giraffes, Buffalo and Antelope in Africa; Demand Change! Sign Now A new study of 7 conservation areas in Central Africa shows that the international community is failing some of the world's most threatened animals. Because governments around the world are not committing enough funding for these parks, they are often only protected on paper and not in practice, leaving animals like elephants, giraffes, buffalo and antelope vulnerable to harm. Countries like Chad, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo set aside huge swaths of land for these animals, but are then left with the responsibility of maintaining and protecting said conservation areas -- an impossibly expensive and labor-intensive task. The fact of the matter is, the international community cannot demand that these countries set such large conservation goals without helping them. They either must provide more funding or allow conservation areas to be strategically split up so they can actually be protected and maintained! He then falsely tested negative with a different test, which the disgraced ex-President took as a signal to carry on as normal??? only to proceed to expose everyone around him. Trump's debate with Biden took place just three days after his positive COVID result, and he was unable to be tested again right before the debate due to tardiness -- which means his recklessness could have exposed President Biden, debate staff, and everyone else he came into contact with that week. Add your name to call for law enforcement to charge Trump with reckless endangerment for not taking precautions following his positive test result! Thank you, Lauren Care2 Petitions Team P.S. It sounds like a fairy tale, but there?s a place on Earth where tigers, elephants, and orangutans coexist in the wild. And this week we can buy a huge piece of their forest home to help protect it...forever. The Leuser ecosystem of Indonesia has been called one of the most irreplaceable ecosystems on the planet. But poaching, infrastructure projects like hydroelectric dams, and mass deforestation fueled by palm oil plantations are threatening to destroy it. That?s why our partner Rainforest Trust wants to purchase and protect a huge chunk of this forest...and give these critically endangered species a fighting chance to survive. Just months ago we were able to do this in Colombia, and protect a rare monkey species...let?s do it again! If 5000 of us chip in the cost of a cup of coffee in the next 24 hours, Rainforest Trust has a donor offering a 4x match on your donation! They could secure the land quickly and get started on their work protecting the forest. Can you help save this irreplaceable piece of our planet? If you?ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately. Donate $3 now Donate another amount Our community has done so much work over the years to protect orangutans from palm oil pillaging, and this could be a huge new step -- actually helping to buy the land and pay for patrols to stop deforestation and poaching. That happens through Rainforest Trust?s local partner, Forum Konservasi Leuser (FKL). After securing the land, FKL educates local communities in sustainable resource use, and recruits community members for jobs to protect the forest. These groups have been working together for 6 years and this land purchase would double their total protected area. And Vladimir, this area critically needs protection. It isn?t just wildlife. The Leuser Ecosystem has a crucial role in fighting climate change, storing massive amounts of carbon (the area we could buy stores almost 350,000 metric tons!). When these areas are hacked and set on fire instead of protected, thousands of years of stored carbon are released. In bad fire years, it?s been estimated as comparable to the fossil fuel emissions of all of Western Europe! This is an incredibly rare opportunity. To work with others around the world to buy a piece of critically endangered ecosystem and know you?ve helped protect it. Will you be one of the 5000 donors we need to buy this land in the next 24 hours? Every extra penny we raise will be used to defend wild places like this from corporations bent on their destruction. Help us win the war Message-ID: <20D191DE41EA4DDF85450D76AE9FBBBC@evol.sp.ru> ? The French public investment bank announced it won?t fund Total?s dirty project, now is the time to take on their other funders. Hi, Our movement just cut off an important source of funding to a fossil fuel giant?s destructive business. We?ve learnt that France?s public investment bank won?t fund Total?s gas pipeline in the Arctic! Together with our partners, SumOfUs and Friends of the Earth, 250,000 people signed a petition to the French Government. And the French Government heard us. We?ve won this battle, but the fight isn?t over. Total has many fossil fuel projects. We need commercial banks and public institutions to completely cut the cash flow to Total and the whole fossil fuel industry. If we keep the pressure on Total?s funders, we can make sure not one more penny goes to its climate-wrecking projects - like we just did for gas pipeline Arctic LNG 2. You?ve signed our petition calling on banks to stop funding Total?s criminal projects, now can you take it further: Will you share this petition with five friends so we can cut all the money funding this criminal corporation? As temperatures keep rising dangerously in the Arctic and across the world, even French commercial banks had started withdrawing their funding from this project. Yet the French Government was going to provide 700 million euros insurance for Total?s destructive Arctic project through its public investment bank. But people power stopped them. This victory wasn?t easy, and France still waited until funding for the project was secured before withdrawing from it. But it shows that institutions will bow to pressure and admit that extracting fossil fuels is bad for our climate. This decision could pave the way for many more. It sets an example to other banks and institutions that are funding Total?s projects. It shows that raising our voices together can achieve victories. And that matters, because every penny we cut off is a penny less this fossil fuel giant has to continue its dangerous business. Will you help us cut the flow by sharing this with your friends? Share on WhatsApp Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share via email A few days ago I felt like no bank was listening to us or taking action. Now, I can see we are having an impact. That?s why these moments are important. This is the time to fight. Message-ID: <00944021636A49C99825761FA8114A81@lewpostnew> Hi, This year, Carlsberg tried to take ownership of our natural world for their own profit. [1] They claimed ownership of dozens of common crops - like certain types of barley used to make beer. And they're not alone. Other corporations like Bayer-Monsanto, DowDupont, and Syngenta are waiting to snatch the rights to everyday seeds. [2] It?s a power grab - pure and simple. We could go from a world where planting seeds means any farmer can grow the food we need. To one where giant corporations set the rules. That?s why our community didn't stand by. We partnered up and took action. [3] And it?s been working. Carlsberg already backed down and withdrew one claim! [4] It shows - when people come together, we can hold back outrageous corporate power grabs. Here?s the thing, Vladimir: this isn?t the first time that the future of our food has been under attack. We?ve been fighting to protect our seeds for years. And that meant being there every step of the way, confronting decision makers with a wave of opposition and even challenging them through legal means. [5] But plans like these cost money. We stayed in the fight last time because of people like you, individuals who each gave a little to keep us going. So Vladimir, will you make a donation so that together we can keep fighting to free our seeds? Even ?5 would make a massive difference. Donate ?5 Donate ?10 Donate ?15 Donate another amount When in May 2020, the European Patent Office accepted that conventionally-bred plants are not for anyone to own, it was a big step forward. [6] But corporations just wouldn?t give up. Now, they're hard at work testing the limits of different loopholes. And it goes way beyond beer. If they succeed they could decide what farmers produce, what retailers sell and how much we all have to pay for it. The WeMove Europe community and our partners No Patents on Seeds! have worked tirelessly over years to keep the issue on the agenda. Only recently did Carlsberg begin to crack. But, it?s up to us to keep it there and see the fight through. To do that we need the resources to put a long-term plan in place. We?ve costed it out and need ?38,876. With that money we could: 1.. Run more audacious actions, like our protest outside the patent office, to grab media headlines which will increase pressure on politicians to take action. 2.. Submit legal complaints and hire experts to challenge the validity of patent applications. 3.. Forge new allies by meeting with small businesses and communities affected. Together we?ll build their ability to speak up with training and campaign resources. We know what we need to win. That?s seeing the European Patent Office close all these legal loopholes. And we have a plan to get there. Getting up and running on these actions above means we can move fast and be a thorn in their side at this critical time. But we can?t count on the funding to put the plan into action. Because we don?t take a single cent from companies or governments. It?s the energy and euros of members like you that keep us going. To pull this off we all need to get behind the idea. So, I?m asking you if you?ll join the thousands of us committed to seeing this through by chipping in? Yes, let's do this! Dear Vladimir, It's past time for Congress to provide compensation for the grievous injustices of atomic testing. Downwinders of US atomic bomb blasts and uranium miners, drillers, and workers involved in 'clean up' after the blasts have suffered for decades but have not been compensated for their medical expenses. Tell Congress: Justice for Atomic Blast Downwinders and Uranium Workers For years, US atomic activities during the Cold War contaminated communities and exposed people, livestock, and food crops to toxic, long-lasting radiation, but only some of those downwinders received health compensation through the 1990 Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). All downwinders, uranium and cleanup workers also need compensation for their sacrifices. Congress MUST renew RECA before it expires in July 2022, and expand it to include all victims of US nuclear activities. A brave Indigenous community has finally found a way to stop one of Europe?s paper giants from decimating the Colombian rainforest. And they could use our help to keep their resistance going. For decades, paper company Smurfit Kappa has wiped out huge swaths of irreplaceable forest to mass-plant the invasive species they use to make packaging materials -- drying up the water supply for local communities and destroying the local ecosystem. Just months ago, the Misak people decided to take on Smurfit by camping out on their land in protest. And it?s working: they?ve been able to stop 70% of the paper giant?s activity! 500 protesters have stayed there day and night, but the company?s attacks are escalating. Security forces have started attacking the protesters, injuring and even killing them. The Misak community is refusing to give up, but desperately needs our support. They need money to buy food, equipment, and shelter to keep their protest going. ?an you chip in now to help? Donate $3 now Donate another amount The Indigenous Misak people have lived in the Cauca region of Southern Colombia for thousands of years. This land is part of their cultural identity and is full of sacred spaces. But Smurfit Kappa has scooped up the most fertile land in the region and is destroying it all to make paper. By planting non-native eucalyptus and pine to cut down to use for their packaging, the paper giant has dried up the nearby river, leaving the local communities without the water they need to survive. For decades, the powerful multinational has gotten away with it. It convinced the Colombian government to give it big chunks of land, bought up tens of thousands of additional hectares, then lobbied the government to change laws so it could say these dirty tactics are ?legal?. Now to top it off, it?s sending the police to attack Indigenous communities who dare to fight back. The protesters have already faced 40 attacks, and many have been injured. In August, a young man, Huver Samir Camayo, was shot dead by the police. Despite all this, the Misak community isn?t giving up. They say they won?t stop their protest until they get their land back, but they desperately need financial support to keep going. Together let?s help power their protest and support other Indigenous communities around the world: If you?ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately. Week 1: Where Wars Happen and Why, January 17-23 Facilitator: Tim Pluta Tim describes his path to peace activism as a slow realization that this is a part of what he ought to be doing in life. After standing up to a bully as a young teen, then getting beaten up and asking his attacker if he felt better, having a gun pushed up his nose as an exchange student in a foreign country and talking his way out of the situation, and getting out of the military as a Conscientious Objector, Tim found that the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 finally convinced him that one of his focuses in life would be peace activism. >From helping to organize peace rallies, speaking and marching at conferences around the world, co-founding two chapters of Veterans For Peace, the Veterans Global Peace Network, and a World BEYOND War chapter, Tim says that he delights in being invited to help facilitate the first week of World BEYOND War's War and the Environment, and looks forward to learning. Tim represented World BEYOND War in Glasgow Scotland during COP26. Week 2: What Wars Do to the Earth, January 24-30 Facilitator: Rukmini Iyer Rukmini Iyer is a seasoned leadership development facilitator, coach and peacebuilder with over 20 years of professional experience around the world. She is currently based in Mumbai, India. After working in mid-management and leadership roles for around 8 years in India and Singapore with renowned organizations, Rukmini set up Exult! Solutions in 2008 with an intention to meld her interests in organization/leadership development and peacebuilding and to create a space for individual and systemic explorations into how we can co-create a world that works for all. The firm is structured as a for-profit venture that consciously redirects a significant part of its earnings and resources to allow for projects in the peacebuilding and social development spaces. Rukmini concurrently works on a range of geo-diverse corporate projects that include organizational development and culture change interventions, competency mapping and assessment centres, leadership and management development journeys, coaching, capacity building, and instructional design. Week 3: What Imperial Militaries Do to the Earth Back Home, January 31-February 6 Facilitator: Eva Czermak Eva Czermak, MD, E.MA. is a trained physician, has a Master?s degree in Human Rights and is Rotary Peace Fellow besides being a trained mediator. In the last 20 years she has mainly worked as medical doctor with marginalized groups such as refugees, migrants, homeless people, people with substance abuse problems and without health insurance, 9 of those years as manager of an NGO. Currently she works for the Austrian ombudsman and for Caritas? aid projects in Burundi. Other experiences include participation in dialogue projects in the US, international experience in the development and humanitarian fields (Burundi and Sudan) and several training activities in the medical, communication and human rights fields. Week 4: What Nuclear Weapons Have Done and Could Do, February 7-13 Facilitator: Emma Pike Emma Pike is an energetic individual driven by her firm belief in education as the surest means for building a more peaceful and equitable world for all. Her years of experience in research and academia are supplemented by her more recent experience as a classroom teacher. She has had the privilege of conducting her research in the three unique environments of the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom. She is especially passionate about the interconnected topics of peace education and global citizenship education. As an educator, she believes that her most important job is to see the vast potential in each of her students, and to guide them in the discovery of this potential. While acquiring the practical literacy, numeracy, and reasoning skills that they will need in life, she wants her students to become active citizens, each in their unique way, who go into the world with the confidence that they have the power to be change-makers. Every child has a super power. As a teacher, it is her job, she says, to believe this and help each student bring their super power to shine. What does it mean to be a global citizen? What does it mean to educate for global citizenship? In our globalized world, in which each of our lives is supported by all others in both seen and unseen ways, these questions represent more than academic curiosity. They are an inquiry into how the largest community that all humans share - the global community - can pave a path of respect for life, celebration of diversity, environmental sustainability, global justice and equity, and harmonious interdependence into the 21st century and beyond. Week 5: How This Horror Is Hidden and Maintained, February 14-20 Facilitator: Deniz Vural Deniz Vural is based in Istanbul, Turkey. She is a life-long learner who graduated with a degree in Marine Engineering, focusing on environmental sustainability, followed by a Master's in Geosciences, studying climate change, but also how to transfer this knowledge to a wider public. She has worked since 2015 on various projects and activities on the polar regions, the effects of the climate crisis, and possible steps to be taken to diminish individual footprints (i.e. carbon, water, ecological etc.). Vural has traveled virtually around the Arctic circle to study the deepest unknown, frozen ground, permafrost. She now focuses on permafrost research, particularly investigating thermokarst lakes, which are also known as ice-rich permafrost, and the relationship between waterbody differentiation and changes in the Arctic ecosystems. She is also leading the Education and Outreach leg under the Polar Research Institute at the The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey and is both learning and teaching different disciplines such as ecological gardening and capacity building workshops. Week 6: What Can Be Done, February 21-27 Facilitators: Greta Zarro and Rachel Small Greta Zarro is World BEYOND War Organizing Director. She has a background in issue-based community organizing. Her experience includes volunteer recruitment and engagement, event organizing, coalition building, legislative and media outreach, and public speaking. Greta graduated as valedictorian from St. Michael?s College with a bachelor?s degree in Sociology/Anthropology. She previously worked as New York Organizer for leading non-profit Food & Water Watch. There, she campaigned on issues related to fracking, genetically engineered foods, climate change, and the corporate control of our common resources. Greta and her partner run Unadilla Community Farm, a non-profit organic farm and permaculture education center in Upstate New York. Greta can be reached at greta at worldbeyondwar.org. Rachel Small is World BEYOND WAR Canada Organizer. She is a community organizer based in Toronto, Canada, on Dish with One Spoon and Treaty 13 Indigenous territory. Message-ID: <13293C48353B4E658918D6CF4B2D3507@lewpostnew> These European rail companies are killing ancient rainforests! European railway companies are bulldozing the Mexican rainforests -- the Spanish and German railway companies Renfe, Ineco and Deutsche Bahn support the Maya Train that threatens the existence of the forests, animals and Indigenous communities. Tell Renfe, Ineco and Deutsche Bahn to get off the Maya Train and save the rainforests! Sign the Petition The Maya Train is a 1,500 km tourist megaproject that is set to bulldoze its way through the last remaining forests of southern Mexico. And Europe's rail companies are lining up to profit from it. The Mexican Government is selling the destructive railway project as progress, development and tourism. In reality, its construction is being forced on local Indigenous people. Communities there know building this project will only lead to an escalation of the violent attacks they are already suffering. Along with the forests goes their means of survival -- which is also home to 2000 jaguars. Thanks to brave communities taking the Mexican government to court, temporary suspensions have been imposed on some sections of the railway. Now is the time for us to mount pressure. This is our chance to get them to abandon the project and save the rainforests of Mexico. Tell Renfe, Ineco and Deutsche Bahn to get off the Maya Train and save the rainforests! Construction of the tracks will destroy 23 nature reserves, passing by UNESCO World Heritage sites. What makes matters worse, is that some sections of the railways of the train are being built without any approved environmental assessment -- against national and international standards. This is no train for the people. It is estimated that 70% of the train's income will come from the transportation of water-polluting fuels, soybeans and pork. International law does not allow projects to be carried out without consent from the indigenous communities. Even the UN criticized the sham consultation organized by the Government of Mexico in 2019! We need to be many to stop the catastrophic effects that this train will have on people and the planet. Together, as the SumOfUs community, we have saved many rainforests. We have bought the parts of the rainforests in Brazil to save the land of the Tupinamb? and strengthen their fight against deforestation by timber companies -- today we can help save the Mexican rainforests! If someone forwarded you this email, subscribe for free here. In our top read this week, BBC Future's Tim Smedley discovers that the pandemic's mRNA vaccines may be the key to solving a wealth of health problems. Barely a year ago, Anna Blakney was working in a relatively inconspicuous, niche field of science in a lab in London. Few people outside of her scientific circles had heard of mRNA vaccines. Because none yet existed. Attendees at an annual conference talk she gave in 2019 could be counted in the tens, not hundreds. Today, she's in hot demand: an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and a science communicator with 253,000 followers and 3.7 million likes on TikTok. She was, she admits, in the right place at the right time to ride a once-in-a-generation wave of scientific progress. She even gave this new era a name: "the RNAissance". Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many people have now heard of ? and have received ? an mRNA vaccine, from the likes of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. But even when Blakney started her PhD at Imperial College London in 2016, "a lot of people were sceptical as to whether it could ever work". Now, "the whole field of mRNA is just exploding. It's a game changer in medicine," she says. It's such a game changer that it raises some very big, exciting questions: could mRNA vaccines provide a cure for cancers, HIV, tropical diseases, and even give us superhuman immunity? Our leaders are too slow to learn what many of us know to be true: we are deeply interconnected. A virus outbreak in Wuhan changed the course of the entire world. Shameful vaccine inequity made African countries uniquely vulnerable, and created the conditions for a new variant to find fertile ground. As a result, Omicron threatens all of us. The way out of this pandemic is less vaccine nationalism, and more global cooperation to protect the most vulnerable, everywhere. Whether Germany's new Chancellor Scholz puts this at the core of his government?s decisions is still an open question. The more he hears from all of us, the better the chances that he will. Too many of us have already lost loved ones in this pandemic. Or overcome other hardships. Or still living through them. Let?s share those stories with Germany's new Chancellor as he starts his term during this profound chapter, and ask him to act boldly: Click here to write a message. Brazil?s President Jair Bolsonaro is a one-man environmental disaster, driving Amazon destruction up by 20% in a year, and leaving Indigenous people facing brutal violence! But there's a way to hold him to account. The International Criminal Court could prosecute him -- but only if the Prosecutor opens a case! Join the urgent call to protect the forest and its people now -- when it's huge our voices will be delivered straight to the ICC! SIGN NOW Dear friends, Brazil?s President Jair Bolsonaro is a one-man environmental disaster. He's greenlighted illegal mining and logging in Indigenous lands, sabotaged environmental laws, and now the destruction of the Amazon has risen by more than 20% in a year -- a loss equivalent to 3,000 football fields per day! He thinks he can get away with it -- but there?s a way to hold him to account. A group of brave lawyers is pushing for the International Criminal Court to prosecute Bolsonaro for his alleged attacks on the Amazon and its defenders. And whether or not it happens will come down to a decision by ICC Prosecutor, Karim Khan. He has a reputation for being tough in his pursuit of justice, but dragging Bolsonaro to court would need a new level of courage. So let?s build a massive global call from every corner of the Earth for him to act, and when this is huge, our voices will be delivered directly to the Prosecutor?s office. Click here to join the call to defend the Amazon Deforestation was decreasing before Bolsonaro came to power, but under his presidency, it surged to its worst in 15 years. He?s used his presidency to encourage loggers, farmers, and criminal gangs to clear the land, and indigenous people have faced violence so brutal they are calling it genocide. This is a matter of survival for all of us. Fires, logging and climate change are pushing the Amazon to its breaking point -- some areas are already releasing more CO2 into the atmosphere than they can absorb. If nothing is done, scientists predict the rainforest?s ecosystem could collapse, with catastrophic consequences for the planet. Crazily, there?s no international law against ecocide. But the ICC does protect against crimes against humanity -- and this is bigger than Bolsonaro. If the Prosecutor opened an investigation, he would set a historic precedent, paving the way for ending impunity for environmental offenders on a global level. It could even move us closer to a new law against the destruction of nature! Sign the petition now, calling on the Prosecutor to take all necessary steps to start an investigation into Bolsonaro -- and let?s be a voice for the forest, its people, and the future of every human on Earth. Click here to join the call to defend the Amazon Together, our movement has tirelessly fought climate change, helped win amazing victories to protect incredible marine reserves, and joined hands with Indigenous people from across the world to defend unique ecosystems. Only oil giants ExxonMobil and Chevron are doing more lobbying harm! Maybe oil barons don't care, but Toyota bosses hate it when news about their lobbying gets out. Public outcry in California last year helped make Toyota pull out of a lawsuit to block climate action there. So if we can mobilize even more of us now, we can stop their dirty work everywhere. Will you add your signature and spread the word? Tell Toyota to stop abusing our trust, and go green for real. The giant Japanese carmaker earned a green reputation -- and now it?s abusing it, according to reports in the New York Times and The Guardian that show how Toyota is using its power to stop ambitious climate laws. Toyota had the chance to own the green car market, but it fell asleep behind the wheel, and is now lobbying to prevent electric vehicle mandates and clean air laws. Toyota?s dirty business won?t end until investors, workers and customers demand change. Some investors are beginning to complain, but it?s not nearly enough. The Red Cross estimates that already, more refugees flee environmental crises than violent conflict. But Toyota is still lobbying to extend the fossil fuel era for extra profits, while trading on its image as a company that cares. This stops here. If Bullfighting Is Still Legal, Then That Means Animal Abuse Is Still Legal. France Must Ban Bullfighting Now! Sign Now Recently, France took the important step of banning wild animal circuses and mink farms, both terrible industries known for their violent cruelty towards animals. But so far, the French government has done nothing to stop bullfighting, which is an equally horrendous form of animal abuse. Why should bullfighting be exempt from these new anti-cruelty laws, when we know it is one of the most violent and harmful animal "sports" of all? This past summer, a French animal welfare organization called the Soci??t?? Protectrice des Animaux tried to stand up against bullfighting in court. But the court sided with animal cruelty, stating that bullfighting was supposedly "too popular" to be banned in France ? which is neither an adequate justification, nor is it true. In fact, nearly three-quarters of French civilians disapprove of deadly bullfighting events. Now that French authorities have heightened protections for animals abused in circuses and on mink farms, there's no excuse for allowing this sport to continue. If bullfighting is still legal, then so is animal abuse. It's as simple as that. Sign the petition to demand that the French Parliament take action and ban bullfighting today! Forced to Work During Deadly Tornadoes, 14 People Lost Their Lives. Demand Justice! Sign Now Holiday gifts should not be more important than human lives. Unfortunately, Amazon.com and Mayfield Consumer Products don't seem to agree. When violent weather patterns ripped through the Midwest of the U.S. last Friday, both companies displayed cruel negligence by prioritizing seasonal consumer demand over shielding their employees from deadly tornadoes. As a result, at least 14 people lost their lives: 8 workers in Mayfield's Kentucky candle factory, and 6 at an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois. These corporations put human lives at risk to selfishly feed their own profit-obsessed productivity deadlines ? and 14 employees paid the ultimate price. These individuals should never have been working with such imminent danger looming. They should have been home with their loved ones and pets, sheltering in place and staying safe. Instead, one Amazon employee texted his girlfriend that he wouldn't be home because the company wouldn't let workers leave until the storm blew over ? even though his home was just a 10 minute drive away, and the tornado wasn't projected to touch down until later. He died when the Amazon warehouse concrete walls collapsed in on him, leaving behind his girlfriend and their two children. Meanwhile, in Kentucky, 100 overworked employees were forced to shelter in place at the factory as the most deadly tornado in Kentucky's history ripped through Mayfield. The factory walls collapsed, the entire structure crumbled like sand, and the injured and dead were left in darkness. Rescue efforts took so long that one employee, who was pinned under 5 feet of rubble, went on Facebook Live to plead for help. These companies MUST be held accountable for these tragic ? and completely avoidable ? deaths. Kenya's Drought Could Kill Thousands of Animals and Millions of People. Demand Assistance Now! Sign Now A severe drought in Kenya is attacking humans and animals alike, parching upwards of half of the country, leaving death in its wake. Just recently, rangers at the Sabuli Wildlife Conservancy in northeast Kenya discovered six of their protected giraffes laying dead, starved and dehydrated to death. The desperate animals had apparently been struggling to reach a water reservoir when their malnourished legs got caught in mud. Too weak to escape, all six creatures died right there, stuck, yearning for water that they would never reach. Even worse, these six parched giraffes are a warning sign: more giraffes are about to die if something doesn't change. The extreme drought has depleted not only the region's water, but also most plants and crops, and it's clearly linked to climate change. Droughts in African countries are occurring more frequently and lasting longer than they have historically ? with no rain yet in sight for Sabuli in Kenya. Experts say approximately 4,000 additional giraffes as well as more than 2 million Kenyans are also at risk of slow, painful deaths from drought-induced starvation. Kenyan authorities are working hard around the clock to provide for both their people and their wildlife ? but we as an international community can do more to help. Message-ID: <86BF73CABB0A4ACF8F73F2634A128146@evol.sp.ru> UN Global Climate Action 15 December 2021 High Level Climate Champions Newsletter From Promise to Reality Ten years from now, we will look back at the COP26 summit as an inflection point in our transformation to an economy that values health and resilience over pollution and deforestation. The Glasgow Climate Pact did not do enough to set the world on course to limit global warming to 1.5?C. But it does keep that prospect within reach. And it?s thanks to a new convergence of businesses, investors, cities, regions and countries. They understand the need to halve emissions, build resilience and end biodiversity loss within the 2020s and are increasingly confident in our ability to collectively drive exponential rates of change. We saw a number of examples of that convergence on display in Glasgow last month. In the push to end deforestation, 141 countries covering 91% of forests agreed to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030. This is backed by nearly ?14 billion in public and private finance, plus new tools and initiatives announced in parallel. Thirty-three financial institutions, with US$8.7 trillion in assets under management, committed to tackle deforestation driven by agricultural commodities by 2025. A new online investment platform provides a first-of-its kind guidance system to help institutional investors allocate capital towards nature-based solutions. The Regen10 initiative will work with 500 million farmers to ensure that by 2030, over half the world?s food is produced sustainably and financed with US$60 billion per year. In finance for the race to zero emissions and resilience, membership of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero now covers US$130 trillion in assets under management - all committed to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Additional initiatives will direct investment towards resilience as well as emission reductions. The new Global Resilience Index helps measure the resilience of countries, companies and supply chains in developing and emerging economies. The International Sustainability Standards Board will create a baseline for high-quality sustainability disclosure standards in the public interest. The Scottish government?s ?2 million (US$2.6 million) contribution to addressing loss and damage, meanwhile, was quickly backed with US$3 million from philanthropies. And a host of commitments to accelerate e-bus deployment in Latin America, renewable energy investment in the Caribbean and land restoration in Africa should prove to be the beginning of a wave of capital being deployed in emerging and developing economies. Figuring out how to create the conditions for the trillions of dollars needed to drive a resilient zero-carbon transition in these markets will be the intellectual challenge of the decade - the delivery of the much vaunted and a much needed green recovery plan. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Motley called for US$500 billion of additional special drawing rights in her opening speech. Other potential solutions include long-term or even perpetual bonds as issued previously in wartime, debt-for-nature swaps and catastrophe clauses in multilateral loans to create more fiscal space for vulnerable economies, and a deeper and wider application of insurance products. Make it Credible That is our immediate challenge for the year and years ahead. Emotions coming out of Glasgow are raw and trust is understandably on shaky ground. Because while we can see the palpable change already taking hold of the real economy, the trajectory of current policies is still unacceptable - 2.7?C - while all the targets in place and under discussion would lead to 1.8?C, according to Climate Action Tracker. Crucially, this optimistic scenario relies on targets being fulfilled on time, and ratcheted up to ensure we don?t go beyond 1.5?C. To do that, we need to ensure that commitments from businesses, investors, cities and regions are robust, credible and based on science, and that progress is consistently reported. The expert panel announced by United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres during COP26 provides a welcome layer of scrutiny over corporate commitments to net zero emissions. It builds the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions team?s work this past year to enhance the integrity of commitments and establish metrics to measure progress under the UN-backed Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns. This will remain the core of the Champions? work in the next five years, starting with Egypt?s COP27 Presidency. Through it all, we will be guided by the need to protect and improve human health and resilience. As the Secretary-General said, ?Protecting countries from climate disaster is not charity. It is solidarity and enlightened self-interest.? Enhancing credibility is one of the key elements outlined in the improved Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action for enhancing ambition, which was welcomed by Parties at COP 26 as part of the Glasglow Climate Pact and included strong statements during the Global Climate Action High-Level Event. The Champions aim to rapidly implement this 5-year plan and boost climate ambition from all stakeholders and accelerate the delivery of credible and immediate action. At COP 26, Parties also encouraged the High-Level Champions to support the effective participation of non-Party stakeholders in the global stocktake. Supporting the global stocktake will be a main priority of the Champions, in particular, helping stakeholders in developing countries and at the regional level to impactfully contribute and highlight opportunities and evidence of enhanced and credible action. In Case You Missed It a.. Renewable electricity capacity will rise by more than 60% between 2020 and 2026 to equal the current capacity of fossil fuel and nuclear power combined, the International Energy Agency has forecast. The growth of renewables is expected to be 50% higher than it was between 2015 and 2020, driven by government policies and clean energy targets announced around COP26. That?s exponential change in motion. a.. Three big European power companies have raised their 2030 targets. Enel aims to have 154GW of renewable and battery storage capacity in place by then, up from 145GW, and has brought its net zero target forward to 2040, from 2050. SSE has cut its targeted Scope 1 and 2 emissions for 2030 to about half of what it previously planned, while trebling renewables output. RWE aims to add 2.5GW of renewables capacity per year out to 2030, up from a previously planned 1.5GW. a.. The Panama Canal Authority?s new Green Vessel Classification system will include a fee for greenhouse gas emissions, helping to accelerate the shift to cleaner shipping. The system will classify ships based on their energy efficiency. a.. Germany will move up its coal phaseout ?ideally? to 2030, from 2038, under a coalition government agreement. It also aims to end gas-fired power by 2040. Meanwhile, Portugal shuttered its last coal-fired power plant nine years before its 2030 phaseout date. a.. Nigeria has become the first major developing economy to commit to set annual carbon budgets in line with a new goal for net zero emissions by 2060. Africa?s biggest oil producer will also set five-year carbon budgets and set up a climate change committee, through a law modelled on the UK?s 2008 Climate Change Act. a.. IKEA intends to phase out plastics in consumer packaging by 2028. This will require engineering of new solutions and collaboration with product development teams and suppliers. The Amazon is going through hell -- by the end of today, an area the size of 3,000 football pitches will be chopped down! Demand a ban on the most harmful fishing practice for our ocean and climate. Bottom-trawling is happening in most marine protected areas and has to stop! Send an email Hi, EU Commissioners are preparing new rules that could stop destructive fishing. They want to hear what you have to say, but we only have until Monday to make that happen! [1] After you and more than 150,000 signed the petition, they're listening more than ever. Let's make sure they spend days sorting through an inbox full of messages before they meet. Like that, they'll have no doubt about how many of us expect action to save our oceans. Now, Oceans Commissioner Sinkevi?ius and Climate Action Commissioner Timmermans have a chance to make history: all they need to do is listen to science and people like us. They could finally ban this harmful fishing practice known as bottom-trawling in the upcoming Oceans Action Plan. [2] But only if enough of us spare a second now to share our opinion before it?s too late. So, will you send a quick email to our EU Commissioners now to save our ocean? We?ve set up a page and made it quick and easy. All you have to do is click the button below to get started. Yes ? send my message! As you read this, industrial fisheries in European seas are using giant nets to scrape up the seafloor, killing sharks, dolphins and seals. Even in our most protected areas. [3] And worse still, by tearing up parts of the seafloor, bottom-trawling is releasing about one gigaton of carbon annually - that?s the same as the entire global aviation industry! [4] It?s destroying the ocean's ability to combat climate change naturally. [5] But now we have a chance to restore ocean health in Europe and protect the climate if we take action. Will you add your voice today to make sure EU Commissioners finally end destructive fishing? Yes ? count me in! Your messages will get the EU Commission to listen. To add to that, we?ll meet with the Oceans Commissioner in Brussels on Monday morning to tell him in person, right before he meets with other decision-makers. Thanks to donations from this community, we?ll hand him a pop-up book that tells the story of how more than 150,000 people care about what?s at stake and how he can change the future of our ocean and climate. And to support the book, for an entire week, we?re taking over the front pages of Politico, the major political magazine in Brussels. [6] Let?s stand together to demand an end to destructive fishing. Our EU Commissioners are waiting to hear from you: let them know it?s time to stop bulldozing our ocean. Email them now before Monday?s deadline. Together we can save our ocean, David (London), Olga (Bologna), Giulio (Rome), and the entire WeMove Europe team P.S. EU seas are the most bottom-trawled in the world, impacting more than 50% of our entire seabed. [7] And this fishing practice is taking place inside 60% of our Marine Protected Areas - this is not ?protection?! [8] Send our leaders a message now to ban bottom-trawling. The strategy includes a commitment to halting the biodiversity crisis and developing an ?Action Plan to Conserve Fisheries Resources and Protect Marine Ecosystems?, which we?re calling the Ocean Action Plan for short. The Ocean Action Plan should limit the most destructive fishing gear and create a plan to transition to low-impact fishing. It has enormous potential to restore ocean health, but the details are important. They?re not only toxic to bees, but they can disrupt human hormones too, creating significant health risks. And by getting into the food we eat, the water we drink, and even the air we breathe, they can also impact unborn fetuses! The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) couldn?t have been clearer about the danger of Cypermethrin. They went so far as to say that NO mitigation measures could make it safe to bees. But instead of taking that advice, EU Member States listened to the mighty pesticide lobby and voted to reapprove this poison. Our case is simple. The EFSA made a clear recommendation that the EU Commission wanted to follow, but Member States -- and the pesticide lobby! -- forced the hand of the Commission to do something illegal. And now thanks to a new law, we can file a suit with the EU's highest courts and do something about it. PAN Europe knows how to win cases like this, and have time and time again. These Rare Dolphins Could Go Extinct Before Ever Getting Federal Protection! Save the Atlantic Humpback Dolphin! Sign Now If you're like me, you had never heard of the Atlantic humpback dolphin until recently -- but unfortunately, it's for a horrible reason. This little known dolphin is on the very brink of extinction, with just 3,000 left in the wild. Luckily, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is considering listing them as protected under the Endangered Species Act. But for now, they are still just considering, in the midst of a status review. Until these dolphins are officially protected, we must apply pressure! The threats to Atlantic humpback dolphins are almost entirely human-induced -- the main one is an issue called "bycatch." Fisheries use gillnets, basically vast walls of netting, to catch the fish species they can sell, but often other species get trapped and killed, too. Dying as bycatch is horrible -- since they are mammals, these dolphins drown if they are tangled in nets and cannot surface to breathe. The synthetic material can also cut into their flesh and cause wounds and infection. Luckily, because this and most other threats to the dolphins are human created, they can be fixed by humans too. Sadly, this will be the last edition of The SFB Weekly ? and the publication as a whole. Try as we might, we just haven't quite been able to find a sustainable business model for the magazine and, looking forward, the headwinds in the wider media industry appear too turbulent to navigate for a tadpole like us. As we round out the year, this seems a good time to make a clean break and discontinue publishing for an indefinite period. Saying that, we do hope (perhaps with more heart than head) to be back at some point in the future, and we'll obviously keep you updated if and when that happens. Anyway, I just want to finish off by saying such a huge thank you for all your time and support over the past two and a half years. It truly has been a pleasure to bring Struggles >From Below to you and, personally, one of the most fulfilling experiences of my professional life. To the readers, thank you for your time and attention, both of which need to be so delicately budgeted in this era of information abundance; and to the patrons, thank you for your extremely kind and generous support, without which none of this would've been possible (and we'll obviously cease the payments from today). In the words of the great Vinnie Jones: "It's been emotional." All the best, Ollie Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Struggles From Below -------------------------------------------------- In our top read this week, Reasons to be Cheerful's Eric Krebs discovers that 2021 was the year cargo shipping pivoted green. The fundamental building block of modern life is a corrugated steel rectangle eight feet wide, eight-and-a-half feet tall and 20 feet long. In the 65 years since its invention, the standardised shipping container has revolutionised the global economy, making global exchange cheaper and more efficient than ever before. In 2020, despite the pandemic downturn, cargo ships moved nearly 60 trillion ton-miles worth of goods, almost twice the global total at the turn of the millennium. As Christmas approaches, the majority of gifts that end up under trees ? not to mention the lights, ornaments and decorative Santas ? will have made the journey on one of these ships. The environmental impact is notable. Today, cargo ships carry some 90 percent of the world?s goods and account for three percent of man-made carbon emissions. Taken as a whole, the global shipping industry emits about as much carbon as Germany. Until recently, the shipping industry trailed other carbon-intensive industries, like vehicles and electric power, in its commitments to reduce emissions. But 2021 was a pivot point. The push toward a zero-carbon shipping industry gained significant momentum, bringing the world closer to a future in which goods are sent across oceans with minimal impact on the climate. Lloyd?s of London has been seriously embarrassed this week thanks to the mobilization of thousands of SumOfUs members who have exposed the insurer's climate lies and greenwashing. The situation was tight last week between Lloyd?s executives and our coalition. SumOfUs members sent over 7,000 emails directly to the chairman and CEO, demanding that Lloyd?s secretive ?ESG Guidelines? be made public for everyone to see. This powerful wave of emails successfully contributed to escalate the pressure on the polluting insurer. And when on Monday, together with our partners from the Insure Our Future coalition, we put a van in front of Lloyd?s HQ demanding they publish the report, the pressure was too much to handle! A few hours later a version of the document was leaked and Lloyd?s eventually published their embarrassing "Guidelines", looking absolutely foolish. The van parked outside Lloyd?s headquarters on Monday morning demanding that Lloyd?s publish its "Guidelines" and end its support for the fossil fuels industry Vladimir, we won a battle but the fight is starting now. As we suspected, the Guidelines reveal the extent of Lloyd?s greenwashing. In this secretive document, Lloyd?s outlines how it plans to continue to allow its members to underwrite and invest in the worst types of fossil fuel projects, despite telling everyone the exact opposite. So, what does that mean? Lloyd?s members can keep on insuring coal, tar sands and other dirty fossil fuel projects. The lawyers at the environmental group, ClientEarth, have already issued a letter to Lloyd?s describing the published ESG Guidelines as ?wholly inadequate? and incompatible with a ?science-based transition to net-zero?, arguing that Lloyd?s may even be breaking the law. Vladimir, our collective action exposed Lloyd?s shameless greenwashing and obliged its execs to publish their secretive guidelines. Thank you! We?re on our way to make Lloyd?s stop its disgusting greenwashing, and we need to ratchet up the pressure now by demanding Lloyd?s to: a.. Clarify exactly how it will meet its net-zero 2050 commitment; b.. Explain how its members are planning to implement the ESG commitments that Lloyd's made in 2020; c.. Confirm whether its members will stop insuring the Adani Carmichael coal mine and the TransMountain tar sand pipeline. Vladimir, we need your help to make Lloyd's and other insurers STOP supporting fossil fuel projects: can you help us strengthen our actions by making a monthly donation? P.S. Don't miss the wonderful advent calendar painstakingly crafted by our friends at Mothers Rise Up and Parents For Future UK. It plays out a cricket match disrupted by climate change. A group of mother activists hand-delivered it to Lloyd?s Chairman Bruce Carnegie-Brown on 1 December in a nod to his well known love of cricket. Hi, I recently got challenged by a wise woman called Angela. After confessing how hard I find things right now, she told me the trouble is I don?t celebrate enough. Now, Angela wasn?t telling me to close my eyes to the heaviness of this moment. She was saying we should open our eyes to the energy being poured into making things better. Because, where there is action there is hope. So I thought about it. And here are the top 5 things I'm celebrating in 2021: 1.. We?re fighting for a better world and winning. In Tenerife, we helped local activists stop a mega port from being built that would have destroyed the only whale heritage site in Europe. This wasn?t just about stopping something bad from happening. It was about fighting for a different model of development, that doesn?t allow growth and profit driven companies to walk all over nature. The local activists made it happen, but I?m so proud that we could back them up and help make this a European story. 2.. People are refusing to be ignored in Serbia. You can?t help but be blown away by the thousands of people in Serbia who have gone from organising around kitchen tables, to signing petitions and taking to the streets. All to stop Rio Tinto grabbing their land and destroying the environment. The multinational corporation wants to exploit the area for lithium, regardless of the irreparable damage to the water, land, air and its people. Land grabbing and environmental destruction are happening all over the world. But people are fighting back. I?m celebrating them and our work to support their fight. 3.. Passing the million marker of people that make up this community of WeMovers. Our power comes from speaking up together - the more of us there are and the more our knowledge is rooted in local realities across Europe, the more we can stand up to the likes of Rio Tinto or big pharma that are exploiting our planet for mega profits that benefit the few. There?s now more than a million of us and we want to keep growing. So please help us spread the word! 4.. Growing our ability to move fast and make positive change. Almost all our income, about 80%, comes from small donations from individuals. [1] When I started at WeMove Europe, that figure was at 60%. It just keeps growing. And the fact that we take zero cash from corporations or governments means that we are independent. We can speak truth to power, without worrying that those folks might cut our funds in the morning. And while we haven?t yet closed our funding gap for this year, I?m celebrating all those who give money to support change. 5.. Building a WeMove Europe team of 28 people rooted across Europe. From Madrid to Brussels to Warsaw, and now Amsterdam! We just hired a fantastic campaigner to build our impact in Europe. The team will grow again in 2022 with plans for another team member to boost our campaign support for YouMove - our tool that allows many more organisations, movements and citizen initiatives to set up their own campaigns online. We know the world is not in the best shape right now. After all, that?s why we campaign and speak up together to change things for the better. But when we take stock we can find things to celebrate, no matter how small. And it?s important. When we can look back with pride, it gives us the energy to push ahead with hope. So I?m curious. What about you? What are you celebrating? Let us know via this survey and we?ll share some of the joy back with the rest of this community. Keep going people! But everyday they are being matched by literally thousands of people joining the great battle for life on earth. The 3.5% rule relies on deeply engaged citizens uniting in common cause, and all over the world, we're seeing exactly that: a steady march to a crescendo of people power, reaching social tipping points that could radically, beautifully transform our world. Children Are Dying to Fill Up Our Smoothie Bowls. Demand Protections for A??a?? Harvesters! Sign Now A??a?? berries are often touted as a miracle health food, brimming with antioxidants and, as a result, filling our smoothies. But what's healthy for you and me is hell for children in Brazilian families. Most of the world's a??a?? comes from Brazil, where an estimated 120,000 families work the forest harvests to survive. Picking a??a?? is an exploitative, deadly job for underpaid families in the Amazon ? one that's largely performed by children as young as 9 years old. The risks they face include falling from 70-foot trees and being crushed, paralyzed, or impaled by its branches, as well as fending off scorpions, snakes, spiders, and venomous bees. Countless children have fallen to their deaths during the day's work, or simply disappear, never to return home. A??a?? berries sit at the top of tall, thin trees that are too fragile for most adults to climb, because the trees won't bear their weight. Many parents are opposed to their children picking a??a??, but families often have no other choice, and greedy middlemen take advantage of this by underpaying the families for their harvests. Some companies claim to only deliver "fair trade" a??a?? harvested without child labor, but experts reveal that's impossible: no such thing as "fair trade" a??a?? exists. Any berry that you or I eat most likely comes from an exploitative system. Right now, the supply chain is simply too spread out to track any individual berry and know where it came from. On top of that, Brazilian law does not provide any labor protections that ensure a livable wage for a??a?? harvesters or sufficient regulations regarding child labor in the industry. Luckily, some government officials are determined to investigate these dangers and protect children. But we must urge them to do even more. Sign the petition to urge Brazilian authorities to create government regulations to protect a??a?? pickers ? children and adults alike! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Within the framework of the EU-funded project - Georgian Climate Program (GEO CAP), the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, in cooperation with CENN, held a second meeting of the National Climate Platform (NCP) on December 15. The NCP brings together stakeholders in the field of climate change - government, donor organizations, scientific institutions, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. NCP aims to promote the effective involvement of stakeholders in the process of climate change. The participants of the second NCP meeting discussed the results of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the Climate Convention (COP 26). During the meeting, a presentation was held of the project funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020 - Creating Innovative Climate Services through the Integration of Scientific and Local Knowledge (I-CISK). Furthermore, the parties reviewed the results achieved so far under the EU-supported project - Georgian Climate Program (GEO CAP) and the activities planned for 2022. During the meeting, the parties discussed the Fifth National Communication of Georgia to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change ? currently a working version. The participants of the meeting decided to set up a working group to work on the draft document of the Fifth National Communication of Georgia to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as on the financial issues of climate change. The meeting was attended by the EU Delegation to Georgia, representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, academia, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. Vogue Magazine: Stand For Animal Rights! Stop Promoting the Cruel Fur Industry! Sign Now Recently, Elle Magazine decided they wanted to be on the right side of history. The company announced that from here on out, all of their magazines -- including 45 global editions -- would be "fur free!" Halting the promotion and glamorization of fur is just as critical as stopping murderous fur production itself, and we applaud them. But other fashion magazines, like Vogue, have been hesitant to take the same stance, leaving fur on their covers, editorials, and advertisements -- and blood on their hands. Animals raised for fur, like mink, foxes, and chinchillas, lead dark, tortured lives. They are born on fur farms where all they will ever know is a dark, filthy, cramped cage. Until they are harvested for their skins and coats, these creatures are neglected beyond belief, denied proper care, nutrition, and outlets to express their natural behaviors. And when they are killed, it's just gruesome -- in order to maintain their hides so they can be sold for a pretty profit, animals are often gassed, or even electrocuted with implements that are placed in their mouths or anuses. There is a strong precedent for Vogue speaking out against injustice and taking a stand to uplift the voices of the marginalized and disenfranchised. Teen Vogue has been a key voice of progressive politics in the past few years. Now, Vogue must continue on with the trend and ban the promotion of fur in all of their magazines. Sign now to demand that Vogue stand with animals around the world and ban fur from their publications! Thank you, Lauren Care2 Petitions Team P.S. The petition we delivered to COP26 and the events we did with it have encouraged us to believe that, in fact, this solution is knowable to people, and even to goverments. Here it is in very short summary: Admit that militaries are huge contributors to climate collapse, that they cause all kinds of other damage, and that they serve no useful purpose. To understand the full extent of that statement, and to persuade others of it, requires a good grasp of a fair amount of information. Without that level of knowledge, one can fall victim to claims that militaries are effectively greening themselves, or to assumptions that militaries can be tools for addressing climate collapse. Luckily, World BEYOND War has gathered the information, weeded out the false or the dubious, organized the key points, and condensed them into a coherent online course for busy, active people. We've also recruited super-talented facilitators to assist our staff in presenting the course and working with participants. War and the Environment will happen between January 17 and February 27, with the material divided into six weekly topics. This course is 100% online and interactions are not live or scheduled, so you can take part whenever works for you. Weekly content includes a mix of text, images, video, and audio. Instructors and students utilize online discussion forums to go over each week's content, as well as to provide feedback on optional assignment submissions. The course also includes three 1-hour optional zoom calls which are designed to facilitate a more interactive and real-time learning experience. Half the spots have been filled. This course makes a terrific gift. Learn more and register here. Lobsters and Crabs Are Sentient. Yet Restaurants Keep Boiling Them Alive and Torturing Them to Death. Sign Now For decades, animal rights activists have been shedding light on the ways that non-human living things experience emotion, pain, and suffering. Finally, a massive report by the London School of Economics -- which compiled over 300 scientific studies -- confirmed what animal welfare organizations have been saying for years: that cephalopods and decapods can experience pain, and should be treated as sentient beings. Sign now to demand that the UK Parliament pass The Animal Welfare Sentience Bill to protect crabs and lobsters from being boiled alive! The food industry has been trying to convince the public that lobsters "don't really feel pain" for generations. But the science is on our side, and confirms that those are lies. Lobsters trapped in vats of boiling, bubbling water trying desperately to escape can obviously feel pain. Hundreds of scientific studies now confirm it. Luckily, legislators in the UK can act. Message-ID: <473977F35B7746F2ADC110F7CBDAAC32@lewpostnew> Hi, Talking about the climate crisis is hard. But, there are a TON of ways you can open up this conversation with loved ones. Here are five tips that have worked for us: Speak to lived experiences Things like carbon budgets and polar bears don?t speak to what most people see in their everyday lives. A more clear way to enter into conversations about what is happening is to bring up climate impacts you and your loved ones experience directly or have been following in the news. One of our climate organisers in Canada starts their conversations like this: I start by having people look out the window. Today I saw snow. It?s not surprising, since it?s wintertime here. But tomorrow, the temperature is supposed to jump up ? way higher than normal. Climate change doesn?t just mean it?s getting hot. It?s often extreme weather changes. So we?re experiencing more dramatic differences. If you're looking for more examples, or have one to share, you can find them on our climate stories page. Tell your story and connect emotionally Most people love stories. So when we talk about climate, focusing on stories and emotion brings what we say to life and can make what you say more persuasive.[1] Having examples of local impacts you?ve experienced and how this made you feel can be a great way to start. You can also try telling your climate story. For example, what have you seen that makes you want to take action and be involved in the climate movement? Tap into values When we try to persuade someone on an issue we care about we often use moral arguments that speak to our interests. But people have different morals. When you talk to someone about climate change, ask yourself, am I presenting this in language that will resonate with them? [2] Try and find something that appeals to what they value: whether that's the role of family, children, community or health. For example, if you are talking to someone who enjoys hiking, you could centre your argument around the way deforestation is destroying some of these environments and the creatures that live there. Offer hope If you?ve had some successful conversations, great! Now is the time to offer hope. Remind the person you are talking to about the victories that are possible when we come together. Try to get them to commit to a follow-up action. Let them know they can get involved in the climate movement by joining 350.org?s mailing list, or you could offer to take them to an event near you. Not everyone will be persuaded Sometimes, you just won?t persuade people, and that's ok. Try and practice empathy, active listening and asking open questions without judgment to keep the conversation respectful. If it isn?t possible to engage constructively, change the topic.[3] You won?t likely change a skeptic into an activist through one conversation. So practice empathy and understanding on yourself too, you?ve done your best no matter what. We hope this gives you the pointers you need to start having great conversations. One last thing, we'd love to hear how your conversations actually went. If you can, please take a moment to complete our quick survey and let us know which of these strategies you found helpful. We read every single response we receive. Sign Now Recent data released through freedom of information laws shows elevated levels of benzene, a known carcinogen, and sulphur dioxide in the Aamjiwnaang First Nation. The report shows that levels of cancer-causing pollutants in the area were 44 times higher than what is considered safe. Even worse, the provincial government seems to have known that levels dramatically exceeded Ontario's standard and did nothing to stop it. This is just one piece of a devastating global trend. Indigenous people around the globe contribute the least to local pollution and climate change, yet tend to suffer the worst consequences of both. They are also disproportionately criminalized for their resistance to colonial and extractive projects, which threaten their land, water, and air. Earlier this year, a bill naming and combating environmental racism would have helped prevent instances like this, but died after a snap election was called by the Liberal government. Bill C-230 would have forced the Canadian government to grapple with systemic environmental harm against First Nations people. Canadian Parliament should revisit and pass this crucial piece of legislation to protect First Nations people and commit to ending ending legal environmental discrimination now. Sign if you agree! The purpose of the market is to support and popularize small and medium-size entrepreneurs living in Gori Municipality. Up to 20 local entrepreneurs will take part in the market, who will exhibit handmade and other types of items on Christmas and New Year themes. As part of the charity event, guests will be able to bring second-hand clothes, which, after the event, will be handed over to socially vulnerable people living in Gori. During the event, CENN, Green Gift, Tene and Biliki will award the winners of the waste paper competition. The waste paper competition is taking place from December 15 to 29 and its goal is to involve public and private schools in Gori Municipality in environmental activities and to encourage waste recycling, in particular paper, in schools. For more information, please visit the event link. The event is initiated within the EU-funded regional project ?EU4Youth: Social Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Development (SEED) for Green Growth?, which is implemented by CENN in partnership with KRDF in Georgia and Green Lane NGO in Armenia. The project empowers disadvantaged youth in Georgia and Armenia to successfully transition from education to work through developing their Social Entrepreneurship and Green Innovation skills. One of the Biggest Bullfighting Cities On the Planet Could Now Ban the Deadly Sport Sign Now Mexico City is home to the largest bullfighting stadium in the world. In this plaza, tens of thousands of people can all pack in together to watch a human egg on a maimed, drugged animal until it reaches a killing frenzy ? only for that same human to stab the animal to death. It's no surprise then that the municipality is also considered one of the biggest epicenters for this grim entertainment, which held its first event for the "sport" back in 1526. But that could all be about to change, because animal lovers in Mexico are raising their voices to say "No More!" Earlier this month, lawmakers in the capital city responded to the rising popular sentiment against bullfighting by proposing a bill that would ban bullfighting within Mexico City entirely. Spain, Ecuador, and multiple states within Mexico have already banned bullfighting, with France poised to potentially follow suit as well. For Mexico City to join the movement would be a huge boon for animals ? and help spell the death of bullfighting worldwide. Sign the petition to stand with animal rights supporters in Mexico City and demand the local government ban this gruesome "sport!" Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Animal lovers in Mexico are urging bullfighting fans to see how badly animals suffer during these events. Sign the petition to support these activists and protect animals from gory deaths! Ninety-Nine Percent of Americans Are Contaminated With a "Forever Chemical" That Lives in Thousands of Consumer Products Sign Now You and I are probably already poisoned by PFAS-contaminated water, along with 99% of Americans ? adults and kids alike ? according to recently-emerging studies. PFAS are "forever chemicals" found in all sorts of products, from firefighting foam, to stain-resistant carpets and Gore-Tex jackets, to cosmetics, to non-stick pans and fast food wrappers. Research shows that exposure to even extremely low levels of PFAS can be linked to unnaturally high rates of cancer, autoimmune diseases, liver and kidney diseases, birth defects, and more. These forever chemicals linger in the environment, never biodegrading, and eventually build up in animals' and humans' bodies. They lodge in both the water we drink and also in the animals that many people eat. According to new information from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), upwards of 100 million people in the U.S. ? including children ? are drinking contaminated water from approximately 120,000 poisoned sites across the country. And so far, the government still has not set any maximum contaminant levels for PFAS chemicals, meaning corporations are currently free to keep flooding our products, waterways, and bodies with these poisons. Fortunately, under the Biden-Harris administration, the EPA is finally starting to address the situation, but its research-and-review process could take years. We just don't have the luxury of waiting that long. That's why Congress must get involved as well. Let's thank the EPA for finally moving to restrict PFAS ? and urge it to move faster. Sign the petition to demand that the EPA and Congress immediately regulate dangerous PFAS and undertake efforts to clean up our communities now, before more people are exposed to these toxic chemicals! Thank you, Miranda Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Toxic PFAS "forever chemicals" are ubiquitous, showing up in virtually every product ? meaning we just keep getting more and more exposed. Factory Farmed Animals Suffer From The Moment They Are Born Until The Moment They Die. Demand Reform! Sign Now Every year approximately 80 billion land animals are brutally slaughtered for human consumption. Never in history has the demand for meat been so high, nor have the conditions in which meat is produced been so inhumane. Factory farmed animals live humiliating, painful lives filled with unthinkable amounts of suffering. It feels as though every week, we hear news of gruesome undercover footage collected at one factory farm or another that reveals overt, needless violence against the caged animals within. And that's the cruelty that's technically illegal -- the legal forms of abuses are just as bad. Battery or gestational cages that are made to constrict the animals within from any movement at all. Conveyer belt techniques of slaughter that leave many animals fully alive when their throats are slit or their feathers are boiled off. The list goes on and on. This conversation is not new. The horrors of factory farms are well-known and well-documented, and most Americans believe that the conditions in which animals are slaughtered en masse are unethical. Why Has Hawaii Not Enacted One? Sign Now As much as 40% of food in the United States is wasted, and this statistic is shocking for a number of reasons. First, and perhaps most importantly, millions of Americans are food insecure. Beyond that, food waste contributes massively to climate change, causing methane emissions in local landfills. Unfortunately, Hawaii has one of the highest rates of food waste per capita. But it doesn't have to be this way. Food waste reduction programs are not only more efficient and better for our communities and our planets, they also tend to be wildly simple. California's recent program, for example, requires the state to reduce organic waste in landfills by 75% between 2014 and 2025. And for the average resident, that simply means having an additional bin in their home where food scraps go. In addition, the new program set a goal to donate roughly 20% of food that would otherwise go to landfills, from businesses like restaurants and grocery stores, to families in need. Hawaii can and should easily develop legislation like this. In fact, a similar program might be a step towards undoing some of the massive health, income and food access disparities experienced by Native Hawaiians compared to tourists. Sign now to tell legislators in Hawaii: act on climate! Implement a comprehensive composting program now!
