Pandemic pressuring health systems, vaccine
production
Disruptions caused by the ongoing pandemic
to health systems around the world have decreased since August 2020, but a
significant number of countries are still experiencing interruptions in
essential services including routine immunizations, family planning and care
for dental emergencies, mental health and cancer, the World Health
Organization says. The pandemic is also putting pressure on vaccine
manufacturing and syringe production, reports UNICEF COVAX supply
coordinator Gian Gandhi.Full Story: Voice of America (4/24), Devex (free

UN chief: Multilateralism key to solving
world problems
The pandemic has highlighted how connected
the global community is, and multilateral solutions are needed to address
issues such as climate change, weapons proliferation and regulation of new
technologies, said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a
message marking the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for
Peace. "Let's unite our resources, technologies, knowledge and experiences
to build peace, to build back better and to make 'no one is safe until
everyone is safe' a reality and a fact of life," said UN Economic and Social
Council President Munir Akram, echoing the UN chief's sentiments.Full Story:

Give girls access to STEM opportunities,
officials say
Girls and women continue to be
underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and
mathematics and world leaders must commit themselves to ensuring gender
equality in education and opportunities, said United Nations
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in an address marking International Girls
in ICT Day last week. "We have a unique window and momentum now to secure
bold commitments that will ensure girls are connected and empowered to
create the brighter futures the world needs," said UN Women Executive
Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.Full Story: India Blooms News Service (4/23)
