Members of the United Nations Security Council will meet today in a closed-door meeting to discuss the escalating crisis in Myanmar, where over 500 civilians have been killed since the military seized power on Feb. 1. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a strong message to Myanmar's junta from the council, while Dr. Sasa, the country's envoy to the UN, says targeted economic and diplomatic sanctions are needed to end the crisis.Full Story: Voice of America (3/31), CNBC (3/31)

Guterres urges action as Syrian aid pledges fall short

Donors committed $4.4 billion in aid for Syrian refugees and their host countries at a United Nations pledging conference this week, falling short of the $10B the UN was seeking. The world has a "collective responsibility" to help end the decade-long war in Syria, says UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is calling for a political solution to the crisis and greater humanitarian access in the country.Full Story: Xinhua News Agency (China) (3/30), Arab News (Saudi Arabia) (3/31), Voice of America (3/30)

The ongoing pandemic has slowed rolled back progress toward gender parity in both the workplace and domestic life, moving the estimated timeline for closing the gender gap from last year's estimate of 99.5 years to 135.6 years, a World Economic Forum report says. "It is time to regroup and re-energize our quest to create a more equal, more just, more sustainable world in which all people can realize their human rights without discrimination and without fear," says United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.Full Story: Reuters (3/30), Xinhua News Agency (China) (3/29)

The destruction of the world's forests sped up in 2020 as 4.2 million hectares of untouched forests were destroyed, a 19% increase from 2019, a report from the World Resources Institute says. The loss of trees in forests, which can capture and store large amounts of carbon, will significantly affect biodiversity and hasten climate change, WRI forest program head Rod Taylor says.Full Story: Voice of America (3/31)
