WHO urges EU lockdowns, protections for
health workers

Dr. Hans Kluge, the World Health
Organization's regional director for Europe, has voiced alarm over a record
surge of coronavirus cases on the continent and is urging leaders to ramp up
efforts to contain the virus. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus and Emergency Programs Executive Director Dr. Mike Ryan report
that health workers account for 1 in 7 coronavirus cases, and have called on
governments to protect health professionals in their countries.Full Story:

US moves ahead with Iran sanctions on its
own

Officials from the US say they are prepared
to impose sanctions on any country violating an arms embargo against Iran,
despite a lack of support from other members of the United Nations Security
Council and signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Iran has called on
the International Court of Justice to overturn US sanctions, which it says
are in violation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity between the two countries.Full

countries

                                One hundred seventy-two countries have
agreed to participate in the World Health Organization's COVAX initiative,
which espouses global cooperation to develop and equitably distribute a
coronavirus vaccine. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has
advised against rushing the process of bringing a vaccine to market, noting
that the perception that a vaccine is unsafe could prevent widespread
participation in vaccinations.Full Story: The Hill (9/17)

camps

                                Pandemic-related closures of youth services
in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh are driving up rates of child
marriage and increasing the risk of human trafficking, according to a study
led by the United Nations. UN data suggests that children make up
approximately half of 700,000 refugees living in the camp and 15% of the 350
trafficking cases identified there in 2019.Full Story: Thomson Reuters

Guterres calls fossil fuel recovery spending
irrational

                                Dedicating economic stimulus funds to
bailing out the fossil fuel industry is not rational and will only increase
pollution levels further, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
said this week. The wise choice is to "invest in the technologies of the
future, renewable energy, nature-based solutions, sustainable transport and
green technologies," he added.Full Story: The Associated Press (9/17)
