They'd rather burn millions of unsold clothes than donate them to those in need

It sounds like hyperbole but it's not. Every year, major clothing chains all over the world — like Louis Vuitton, Nike, Urban Outfitters, H&M, and more — create a giant mountain of fresh, clean, new, unworn clothing. And then they set them alight to create a huge bonfire. Why? These brands are obsessed with seeming elite, exclusive, and expensive, even though they overproduce every single year. So rather than sell their items at a discount or donate them to the homeless, they destroy the products entirely.
This problem has never been more acute than during the pandemic, when months of public health shutdowns meant brick-and-mortar clothing stores couldn't sell to the public, creating unprecedented amounts of unsold clothing. Now, all of that excess could be about to disappear in smoke and flames. Not only are these fashion bonfires extremely cruel to people in need, they're also dangerous for our environment and health. Most of this clothing is made from synethic, chemical-laden materials and they release huge amounts of toxins, microplastics, and greenhouse gases when burnt. Luckily, France plans to ban these types of clothing fires, but now we need to convince the U.S. to follow suit. Sign the petition to demand that the United States ban these wasteful fashion bonfires, now!
Thank you for all that you do,
Miranda B.

P.S. Every time greedy fashion brands burn unsold clothing in order to avoid slashing prices, they're accelerating climate change and hurting people. Sign the petition to demand that the U.S. pass a law banning fashion houses from burning excess inventory!
