Avaaz.org - The World in Action
Dear friends,
Joyce ran to be the first black woman to be mayor of her small town in Alabama. Viral lies on Facebook destroyed her hopes and tore her community apart with hate. Her elderly mother cried at what she saw.
And Facebook failed to stop it.
Now Joyce and other women like her are standing up to share their stories. They want to reach Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and his employees, directly -- to make them see the real, human costs of misinformation, so that he finally takes decisive action to stop it before millions more are forced to suffer.
We can help them. Click to amplify their stories by retweeting this thread -- and even add your own story by using the hashtag #FacebookSurvivors:
Retweet this
The last time Avaaz helped people share their stories like this, it brought some social media executives to tears -- and had a real impact on policy. That was just a few people in a conference room... but if we all retweet these stories and add our own personal messages, we can take these powerful stories to the heart of Facebook and inspire Facebook employees everywhere to do more to stop hateful lies, before another life is devastated.
Click here to help amplify these powerful stories now.
Avaaz has been running an all out campaign to fix Facebook -- from hunting misinformation in the US; advocating for laws from Brazil to the EU; standing with survivors of hate crimes and doctors fighting Covid misinformation worldwide; and generating hundreds of media articles to bring light to this crisis. It’s clearer than ever that none of our countries are safe from Facebook’s abuse, and none of the issues we care about can be won without first ending the scourge of disinformation poisoning our public debate. Let’s come together like never before to get Facebook fixed before it’s too late.
With fierce hope and determination,
Fadi, Risalat, Nax, Fey, Mike, Nell, Andrew, Meetali and the whole team at Avaaz
