cases spike

The pandemic has demonstrated the importance
of public health care, and countries around the world must invest in systems
to ensure universal access to quality treatment, says United Nations
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The World Health Organization reported a
record 338,779 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday.Full Story: Prensa

Nobel Peace Prize awarded to WFP

The World Food Programme has been awarded
this year's Nobel Peace Prize for its "efforts to prevent the use of hunger
as a weapon of war and conflict." Data from the agency indicates more than
821 million people around the world face chronic hunger, and the WFP has
said that the economic effects of the coronavirus could drive a "hunger
pandemic."Full Story: BBC (free registration) (10/9), Hindustan Times

The World Health Organization will release a
digital stress management guide through WhatsApp, as well as stickers on
Facebook Messenger promoting discussion of mental health, as it marks World

Young women are stepping up to effect change
around the globe -- and yet girls in many parts of Africa are denied basic
human rights, and girls make up a disproportionate number of AIDS victims in
the region, write Winnie Byanyima, Audrey Azoulay, Natalia Kanem, Henrietta
Fore and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the heads of UNAIDS, UNESCO, the United
Nations Population Fund, UNICEF and UN Women, respectively. "Together we can
ensure vital investments and transformational policy shifts are made so that
all of Africa's girls can enjoy all of their rights to education and
empowerment," they write.Full Story: Inter Press Service (10/9)
