Turkish move to reopen Cypriot beach draws concern
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is urging Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders to engage in dialogue following Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ersin Tatar's announcement that he planned to reopen beaches in the long-abandoned town of Varosha, which is protected by a 1984 UN Security Council resolution. Sanctions implemented by the United States, the EU and other western countries violate the United Nations Charter and impede efforts to fight the coronavirus, a group of 26 countries said this week at a UN General Assembly human rights committee meeting.
