Rights chief sounds alarm as Tigray conflict
escalates
Fighting in Ethiopia's Tigray region has
spilled over the border into Eritrea and risks destabilizing the entire
region, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet
says. The Tigray People's Liberation Front has accused Eritrea of
contributing troops to support Ethiopian forces moving into Tigray and on
Saturday fired three rockets into Eritrea.Full Story: Voice of America

Guterres calls for safe, sustainable
transportation
Road traffic accidents are the most common
cause of death for children and young people and the global community must
work to develop transport methods that are safe, sustainable and accessible
to everyone, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in an
address marking World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which was
observed on Sunday. "(S)ome 3,700 fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons,
daughters, friends and colleagues are lost on the world's roads every day,"
Guterres added.Full Story: The Famagusta Gazette Online (Cyprus) (11/14)

WFP chief predicts hunger crisis will worsen
in 2021
The resurgence of the coronavirus in many
regions is driving up hunger rates as people find themselves unemployed amid
the pandemic, and the World Food Programme does not have adequate funding to
address the crisis, which will only worsen in the coming year, says
Executive Director David Beasley. "Let me be clear -- if we don't get the
money we need in the strategic locations, you will have famine,
destabilization and mass migration," Beasley says.Full Story: The Associated

WHO chief warns against reliance on
coronavirus vaccine
A coronavirus vaccine on its own will not be
enough to curb the spread of the pandemic and must be used together with
testing, contact tracing and isolation, World Health Organization
Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says. The WHO reported a

UN chief urges halt to coal power
development, financing
Countries around the world must stop
building new coal power plants, stop subsidizing fossil fuels and levy taxes
on carbon emissions, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged
in a video message to this year's East Asia Summit. Guterres also urged
leaders to prioritize sustainability and climate resilience in pandemic
recovery efforts, noting that doing so would create jobs and reduce
