Escalating conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray
prompts alarm
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres is urging authorities in Ethiopia to de-escalate tensions as
officials in Sudan brace for hundreds of thousands of refugees crossing the
border to escape violence in Ethiopia's Tigray region. UN High Commissioner
for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet is seeking a probe into civilian deaths
in the region, which she says could constitute war crimes, while World Food
Programme officials in the region report that Ethiopian police have asked
them to identify staff who are members of the ethnic Tigrayan community.Full

WHO warns of vaccine funding gap, urges
precautions
A World Health Organization accelerator
program aimed at ensuring equitable coronavirus vaccine distribution is
short $28.5 billion of its financing goal and urgently needs $4.5 billion to
continue its program, says WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus. "We may be tired of COVID-19 but it is not tired of us," the
WHO chief said as he urged the global community to take precautions to
prevent further spread of the virus.Full Story: Thomson Reuters

Vaccination slump drove spike in 2019
measles cases
A dip in vaccination numbers around the
world drove the number of measles cases in 2019 close to 870,000 -- the
highest number recorded in 23 years -- and increased measles deaths to
207,500, according to data from the World Health Organization and the CDC.
"These data send a clear message that we are failing to protect children
from measles in every region of the world," says WHO Director-General Dr.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.Full Story: The Associated Press (11/12)

Fallout from Beirut blast leaves older women
struggling
United Nations data show close to 10% of the
homes damaged in the August port explosion in Beirut belonged to elderly
women living alone, and aid agencies say many of these women are struggling
to access assistance in the wake of the blast. A legal advocacy group is
urging the UN to participate in an investigation of the explosion, noting
the UN has repeatedly warned of corruption in the Lebanese government.Full

UN chief welcomes sustainable finance pledge
from banks
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres has welcomed a pledge from 450 development banks around the world
to tie pandemic recovery efforts to goals set out in the 2015 Paris climate
accord, but is urging commitments to eliminate funding for fossil fuel
projects as well. UN Development Programme finance sector hub director
Marcos Neto says the agreement is a critical step toward climate action and
is urging countries that finance the banks to implement rules that require
lending practices to support climate goals.Full Story: Reuters (11/12), The
