Official urges testing, tracing as WHO chief
quarantines
Countries wishing to avoid national
lockdowns to control the spread of the coronavirus must step up testing
efforts and trace contacts of people confirmed to have the virus, says Dr.
Margaret Harris of the World Health Organization. WHO Director-General Dr.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Sunday that he would self-isolate
after contact with a coronavirus patient, and noted that compliance with
health guidelines on hand-washing, masks, social distancing and
self-isolating is key to ending the pandemic.Full Story: The Guardian

Guterres urges protections for free press
Violence against members of the press
declined in 2019 compared to 2018 and is on track to decrease further this
year, but it's unclear whether the shift is attributable to strong media
protections or to journalists self-censoring in the face of threats,
according to a UNESCO report released to mark the International Day to End
Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. "When journalists are targeted,
societies as a whole pay a price," says United Nations Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres.Full Story: Al Jazeera (11/2), Dhaka Tribune

UNSC rejects Russian resolution on women in
peacekeeping
Members of the United Nations Security
Council rejected a Russian-backed resolution on women, peace and security as
they marked the 20th anniversary of Resolution 1325, which recognized
women's rights in conflict and peace-building. Opponents of the resolution
cited concerns that it would undo progress on women's rights along with
efforts to end sexual violence in conflict and undermine women's role in the
peace process.Full Story: The Associated Press (10/30), Devex (free
