For the past year, the people of Hong Kong took to
the streets to express their desire to remain an autonomous, self-governed
city and demand that Beijing respect the "one country, two systems" style of
governance. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, people have been off the streets
to halt the spread of the virus, but it also halted the people's efforts.
On April 19, Hong Kong authorities arrested 15
prodemocracy leaders/activists. Among them was Figo Chan, who received the
Halifax Forum's John S. McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service on
behalf of the People of Hong Kong. On May 18, Figo and the 14 others will
appear in court. The Chinese government has increased its rhetoric against
the protesters, calling them "a political virus". Figo and the millions of
people who have protested for freedom, need the support of people around the
world. Show your support.
