Love vs the Coronavirus
Dear Avaazers,
Something big is about to happen to humanity, much more than just a flu.
It's now clear that many of us could likely get the coronavirus -- and although most will be fine, the most vulnerable among us will be hit really hard. We all have someone we love who is facing this.
Our task now is to mobilise to SLOW it down, because the slower it moves, the more lives will be saved.
This is our mission. Slow it down, flatten the curve of the epidemic, and bring love and support to those most vulnerable. Humanity is about to face serious adversity - and that can either split us apart in fear, or unite us in common purpose and love. Our movement can help shape what happens next. Sign the pledge to slow the curve, and share this vision of love and determination with everyone you know -- our goal is to reach 100 million people in the next week:
YES, I WILL DO MY PART
CORONAVIRUS PLEDGE
As governments intensify efforts to combat the global outbreak of coronavirus, and give scientists time to develop the right vaccines and treatments, people’s actions are central to flattening the curve of the epidemic, and saving numerous lives.
I therefore commit to KEEP CALM and:
🏠 STOP THE VIRUS at our doorstep, minimising the risk of infection for myself and others -- by washing my hands often and properly, staying at home, avoiding crowds as much as possible, and cancelling unnecessary travel.
🙌 SPREAD WISDOM by proactively sharing reliable, factual information and guidance. It is our best way of countering the fake news and conspiracy theories that are fueling mistrust, panic, and reckless behaviour - threatening our collective response to the epidemic.
🤦 SEEK CONNECTION and mutual support within my family and members of my local and global communities. To do so, I will reach out to make sure all, particularly the most vulnerable, have the necessary information and support that can protect them against infection and unhealthy anxiety, or to get adequate medical assistance.
YES, I WILL DO MY PART
For the first time in human history, we may end up all staying home for a while. But we'll have the internet! China has already seen unprecedented spikes in online activity.
This could be a unique, powerful period for our world. And it could go either way.
Peddlers of disinformation are already rife, stirring up our home-bound frustration and fears of economic collapse with viral lies, blame and division. Let's be the better angels, and spread the memes of unity, compassion, hope and determination to slow the curve, protect our loved ones, and bring humanity together:
YES, I WILL DO MY PART
The challenges our world is experiencing can be scary, and bewildering. It's tempting to play the victim and cast blame. But we can meet them another way, with a determination to let adversity bring out the best in us, not the worst. Spreading love can even help fight the virus itself - because love and connection can help strengthen our emotional health and immune systems. Humanity has a common enemy, a common cause. Let's come together, and rise to the challenge of the coronavirus with love and determination.
With hope,
Luis, Ricken, Bert, Sarah, Spyro, Joseph, Nana, Anneke and the whole Avaaz team
