Dear colleagues,
March 17, Tuesday at 12:00 we'll organise a press-conference. It will be in
Saint Petersburg.
REGIONAL PRESS INSTITUTE,
Phone: +7 (812) 272 4672, 73 Ligovsky, room 314, St. Petersburg
We will present at a press conference a report in Russian and English
languages
CURRENT CHALLENGES AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR RADIOACTIVE GRAPHITE HANDLING
IN DECOMMISSIONING OF RBMK-TYPE REACTORS
The world faces a new stage in operation of nuclear power reactors. Its
specifics are related to a growing number of decommissioned power units that
either reached the end of their operating lifecycle or their operation is
becoming economically not viable, environmentally unsafe or politically
unacceptable.
Radioactive isotope of carbon 14C that was formed during the operation of
uranium-graphite reactors (UGR) requires a particularly careful approach in
selecting technology for long-term isolation from nature and wildlife. To
date, the total radioactivity of accumulated reactor graphite in the world
is almost 3 times greater than that generated by nuclear and thermonuclear
explosions from 1945 to 1960.
Thus, the safe long-term isolation of reactor graphite accumulated in the
world is a global challenge.
The participants of the press-conference
Oleg Bodrov – physicist, ecologist, General Director of LLC Decommission,
Chairperson of the interregional public environmental movement "Public
Council of the South Coast of the Gulf of Finland" of St. Petersburg and the
Leningrad Region .

of the Ignalina NPP, deputy head of the Public Council on the Environment
and Energy under the Mayor of the town of Visaginas, Lithuania, former
Deputy Chis of Reactor Shops of Leningrad, Ignalina and Chernobyl NPPs.
Oleg Muratov – physicist, candidate of technical sciences, head of the
Radiation Technology Department of LLC TVELL (St. Petersburg), member of the
of the Public Council of Rosatom State Corporation, leading
expert-coordinator of the Higher Expert Commission of the Public Council,
Executive Secretary of the North-West Branch of the Nuclear Society of
Russia, member of the Central Board of this organization.
Andrei Talevlin – PhD in Law, Associate Professor at Chelyabinsk State
University, Chairperson of the regional public movement “For Nature", and
expert of Decom-Atom - international network of public organizations to
promote safe decommissioning of nuclear power plants and safe handling of
radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.
