WHO: Pandemic surge is driven by a few
countries

Ten countries are responsible for two-thirds
of the world's coronavirus cases, and "intense transmission" in the United
States, Brazil and and India accounts for half of all cases globally, World
Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said
this week as he urged leaders to engage their citizens in fighting the
pandemic. The WHO reports more than 10,000 health workers in Africa have
contracted the virus as the pandemic ramps up on the continent.Full Story:

UNGA opts for virtual meeting in Sept.

Leaders from around the world will deliver
their messages to members of the United Nations General Assembly by video in
September in an effort to limit the risk of spreading coronavirus, the group
decided this week. General Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande is also
encouraging participants to move side events to a virtual setting.Full

UNDP recommends basic personal income to
fight pandemic

Pandemic recovery efforts should not focus
solely on large businesses, as a basic personal income program in 132
developing countries could play a significant role in curbing the spread of
coronavirus by allowing low-income workers to stay home, a report from the
United Nations Development Programme says. "Unprecedented times call for
unprecedented social and economic measures," says UNDP Administrator Achim
Steiner.Full Story: Reuters (7/23)

                                Pandemic threatens progress on unplanned
pregnancy

Decades of progress in reducing the number
of unplanned pregnancies around the world could be undone as the pandemic
threatens access to reproductive health services including abortions and
contraceptives, a study from the United Nations Human Reproduction Programme
and the Guttmacher Institute says. The World Health Organization estimates
that 270 million women worldwide lack access to modern contraceptive
products.Full Story: The Guardian (London) (7/23)

UN chief advocates for green recovery in
China

Pandemic recovery plans should not include
funding for coal-based energy or any other fossil fuels, but focus on
renewable energy sources, which are often cheaper and create more jobs,
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says. "There is no such
thing as clean coal, and coal should have no place in any rational recovery
plan," Guterres told University of Beijing students during a lecture this
week.Full Story: Climate Home News (7/23)

                                United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres has strongly condemned an attack by Boko Haram fighters in Nigeria
that left five civilian aid workers dead, urging authorities in the country
to bring the perpetrators to justice. "The Secretary-General reiterates that
attacks by a party to an armed conflict that are directed against civilians,
including those who are aid workers, violate international humanitarian
law," spokesperson Stephane Dujarric says.Full Story: Premium Times
