WHO: AIDS fight is guide for pandemic
response

The World Health Organization reported more
than 230,000 new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period this weekend, a new
high. Dr. Michael Ryan, head of the WHO emergencies program, says the global
community will be unable to eradicate the virus under current conditions and
advises world leaders to look to the battle against HIV/AIDS for guidance on
containing the pandemic.Full Story: The Guardian (London) (7/13), Voice of

UN urges women's empowerment on World
Population Day

                                Pandemic-related lockdowns are curbing
access to reproductive health services for many women and driving an
increase in domestic violence, threatening to undo progress made toward
empowering women, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in
an address marking World Population Day on Saturday. UN Population Fund
Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem echoed Guterres' warning, posting a
social media message urging the global community to protect the rights of
women and girls during the pandemic.Full Story: Associated Press of Pakistan

Single aid crossing into Syria alarms Kurds

Kurdish authorities in northwest Syria are
voicing alarm over a decision by the United Nations Security Council to
approve moving aid into the country via a single border crossing from Turkey
and warning that the move effectively leaves them to deal with the crisis
alone. Security Council members approved the resolution on Saturday after
previous attempts to extend aid via two border crossings were vetoed by
Russia and China.Full Story: Reuters (7/11), Voice of America (7/12)

Refugees in several African countries are
resorting to transactional sex, begging and early or forced marriages to
survive as aid dries up, the World Food Programme and the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees say. "While the situation continues to
deteriorate for everyone, the disaster is magnified for refugees who have
absolutely nothing to cushion their fall," says WFP Executive Director David
Beasley.Full Story: Sahara Reporters (7/10)

stranded tanker

Members of Yemen's Houthi militia have
reportedly agreed to provide the United Nations with access to a decaying
oil tanker stranded off the country's coast. The UN Security Council is
scheduled to meet July 15 to discuss the tanker, which could cause serious
environmental damage to the local marine environment if the 1.1 million
barrels of crude oil on board leaked into the surrounding waters.Full Story:
