solutions to climate change, and more

                        June 2020
                        Environmental Updates

June has been an eventful month for the environment.
It began with World Environment Day, which saw millions of people come
together online to declare that it's Time for Nature. We also celebrated
World Oceans Day and the 75th anniversary of the United Nations – marking
the institution’s history of environmental action. UNEP released four key
reports and many web articles on pressing issues related to nature. For a
deeper look, please peruse the stories and studies below.

                        RESOURCE EFFICIENCY
Could going green save the fashion industry?

The fashion industry is the world’s second biggest
consumer of water and generates close to ten per cent of global carbon
emissions.Their business devastated by COVID-19, some designers and
retailers see salvation in conservation.

Marco Bizzarri, is encouraging other big companies to slash emissions before
it’s too late.

                        DISASTERS AND CONFLICTS
In the wake of war, a massive cleanup begins in Iraq

With the help of UNEP and the International
Organization for Migration, conflict-ravaged villages are digging out from
under years of rubble.

                        ECOSYSTEMS
Using nature as a defence against climate change

A new video explores how mangroves, coral reefs and
wetlands can blunt some of the effects of global warming.

                        ECOSYSTEMS
Long marginalized, indigenous people “essential” for
halting ecosystem loss

Traditional knowledge is key to safeguarding some of
the planet’s most fragile ecosystems, says UNEP’s Siham Drissi in this
interview.

                        ECOSYSTEMS
After 80 years in captivity, Diego the giant
tortoise goes home

In fathering 800 children, the tortoise, from the
remote Galapagos Islands, helped save his species from extinction.

Across the world, entrepreneurs find innovative
solutions to environmental challenges

electric motorbikes a staple of Bangkok’s street. Read similar stories about
young entrepreneurs in Cameroon and Kenya.

                        REPORTS
Studies shed light on conflict, plastics and
seagrasses

This month, UNEP released reports covering the
importance of seagrasses, gender-based violence in conflict situations,
consumer attitudes towards plastics, and legislative approaches to natural
resource management.
