The NRC has invented a new and deceptive name for nuclear power waste, calling it ?Very Low Level,? or VLLW. The fact is that VLLW is not only Very Long-Lasting Waste, but also extremely dangerous to human health and the environment. Despite the dangerous nature of VLLW, the NRC wants to authorize regular landfill operators to dispose of radioactive waste. This would almost certainly result in nuclear waste leaks into our water, air, crops, and communities. We need to flood the NRC with comments against this dangerous deregulation of nuclear waste. The deadline for comments to the NRC is less than a month away. Tell the NRC and your members of Congress: No dumping radioactive waste into our landfills. There?s no such thing as a safe level of radioactivity. The NRC claims only very "low levels" of radioactive waste will be disposed of with regular trash, but there is no safe level and the level they propose is actually higher than licensed dumps. At the proposed level, 1 in every 500 people will get cancer if exposed over their lifetimes. The NRC is also taking this action behind the backs of the American people, under the cover of the Covid-19 crisis. Their proposal would allow regular trash landfills to start taking nuclear waste without their surrounding communities knowing or having input. This is simply unacceptable. Powerful players in the nuclear industry are pushing for this change, and the NRC may give them what they want unless we stop them. The deadline for comments to the NRC is less than a month away. A "gene drive" is a newly developed genetic technique of engineering insects, animals and plants. By spreading, they can replace their natural counterparts until they?re all eradicated. We call for a moratorium until we understand all its risks. Sign now Hi Alexey, With the coronavirus, we've learned how fast a new organism can spread. Imagine genetically engineered mosquitoes designed to inherit their genes at a very fast pace, jeopardise the food chain, and wipe out their natural siblings by making them infertile. [1] According to scientists, there is a risk the so-called "gene drive" could even spread from mosquitoes to butterflies, killing pollinators en masse, risking crops, plants and entire ecosystems. [2] Nobody pushing this new technology has a solution that would successfully mitigate these risks, but even so, plans are proceeding to make gene drives a reality. Most of the funding to make this happen is being provided by the US military and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. [3] With your help, we can start the process to put a moratorium on it. Next week, experts and government officials will come together to discuss this new and risky technology. Our partners have secured two seats at this private online meeting and will represent our voices. If thousands of us sign the petition calling for a moratorium, what our partners say will count much more. Add your name to ensure we don?t release any genetically engineered organism without properly assessing its severe risks. Sign the petition! The billionaire Bill Gates is excited about the potential of this new technology. [4] He hopes to get rid of mosquitos that pass on diseases, but until now no scientist has been able to assess the risk. [5] We don't want to solve one problem only to create another bigger one. [6] Imagine we eradicate one species of mosquitoes, but what happens to frogs, birds and fish feeding on mosquitoes and their eggs? How will the behaviour of other animals change when mosquitoes disappear? Deer may not hide in the mountains to protect themselves against their bites, instead staying in valleys and feeding differently. The biggest imaginable risk is the collapse of whole ecosystems happening with the release of even a handful of gene drive mosquitoes. With what we know about gene drives now, their effects cannot be predicted, stopped, or reversed. We want to support the great system that is nature and understand it before we mess with it. A moratorium will give us the time to work out what we need to do next to protect nature and life. The upcoming meeting of experts is to inform EU and global decision makers about the risks. This is the moment we need to be heard. Unfortunately, we don?t know yet who will participate and we cannot address them directly, but only two of us will join the meeting - and we need them to be powerful. Sign the petition! Our signatures show people power from all over Europe. We have shown time and time again how, starting with a simple petition, we can achieve big wins: just a few weeks ago we shared how together we stopped barley, brewing, and ultimately all beer production from being patented. It started with a simple petition. If we act now, we can have a moratorium before it?s too late. David, J?rg (L?beck), and the entire WeMove Europe team PS: Before we release a new technology, we need to make sure we don?t risk destroying entire ecosystems by making the world an experimental laboratory. Bees are dropping dead and scientists in Ghana are raising the alarm. They?re calling for a national clamp down, but they?re up against powerful industry lobbyists. Can you chip in $2 to fund research into harmful pesticides in Ghana? Donate $2 now A new investigation shows how pesticide giants Bayer and Syngenta are undermining all the work we've done to ban bee-killing pesticides in Europe -- by ramping up sales across Africa! These toxic double standards threaten to decimate bees and other pollinators across the continent -- already beekeepers have reported plummeting numbers. Now an alarmed group of scientists in Ghana are campaigning for a national ban on neonics. This would be a huge win that could set off a chain reaction in other countries, showing the chemical giants they have nowhere to turn. But they can?t do it without your help -- the cocoa industry is Ghana?s biggest neonics user and the powerful Cocoa Board is in bed with pesticide manufacturers. With extra funds the scientists can gather irrefutable evidence of the damage wrought by neonics in Ghana and convince the politicians these chemicals must go. Can you chip in $2 to supercharge the campaign? Yes, I will chip in $2 to stop bee-killing pesticides in Africa. This is toxic corporate behaviour. It?s what the cigarette companies did too -- beaten in Europe and North America, they went to prey on African countries where people have fewer regulatory protections. We need to back this campaign to show all corporations with harmful products they can?t just dump their poison on Africa with abandon. In Ghana, pesticides are already having an impact. Cocoa covers over 30% of Ghanaian farmland, which is now loaded with lethal neurotoxins like imidacloprid, which leach into surrounding soil. Yields are falling and experts say it?s because these chemicals are harming key pollinators -- but to win over key officials, they need more evidence. Ghana has an election coming up so it?s the perfect time to ramp up the pressure. With your help, Ghanaian scientists can run a study to show the damage neonics are wreaking on local biodiversity and then launch a huge advocacy and media push to get out the results. Showing neonics are actually hurting Ghana's economy could shift the whole national conversation and help secure a ban -- that could spread across the continent. Can you chip in? Yes, I will chip in $2 to stop bee-killing pesticides in Africa. Our community was crucial in winning a prohibition on toxic neonics in Europe. Right now we have an opportunity to launch a fight that will close off another market for the chemical giants trashing the planet. Police kill thousands of our sweet pups every year and almost never face any consequences Sign Now Vladimir, According to the U.S. Department of Justice, COVID-19 isn't the only epidemic ravaging our communities ? another has been around for years, and it's the epidemic of police officers shooting innocent family dogs dead. Activists estimate that officers gun down our sweet companion animals at a rate of 500 dogs each day, and one every 98 minutes. And for the most part, these killer cops get away with it scot-free. This is what happened to Junior Gonzalez's family. Last month, in June 2020, Junior was working late at the laundromat he owns. A passing deputy saw him inside and automatically assumed Junior was burglarizing the property. Before even asking questions, he drew his weapon. But Junior wasn't alone; his two loving pit bulls, Roxi and Luna, had been helping their dad at the laundromat that night. When the officer approached, Roxi barked and sat, waiting for pets. The cop responded by shooting this sweet, inquisitive girl in her jaw, chest, and leg. This is a symptom of a much larger problem: police assuming they can just shoot first and ask questions later. But shooting a pet animal at point-blank range should never be the solution to de-escalate a situation. Stop police from murdering our beloved companion animals! In India, big cats and other endangered wildlife are being murdered more than ever Sign Now Vladimir, The lockdowns necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic have been lifesaving, successfully slowing the spread of the deadly virus all over the world. However, even while they were completely essential, they have also brought some unavoidable pains with them. One such pain is economic downturn and unemployment. By April of 2020, India reported that 120 million of its citizens had lost their jobs, and in a country rife with poverty, people have become desperate for food and income. Unfortunately, one consequence of that desperation has been the murder of endangered wildlife and big cats. Since the beginning of India's lockdown, at least eight big cats, the critically endangered tiger and leopard, were captured and slaughtered for meat or parts to sell. In one of India's national parks, a rhino was killed so its horn and other body parts could be sold for a handsome sum. Now, experts are worried that this poaching frenzy may push India's ecosystems beyond the point of recovery. Sadly, the antiquated and crass techniques used by inexperienced hunters have left animals wounded and suffering for days before they finally perish. Demand swift action from the Illinois EPA! Sign Now Vladimir, There is a silent killer lurking in the United States, hiding just below the surface of the Illinois River, and it's killing our furry friends. It's called microcystin, a toxin that is released by blue-green algae when it blooms in warm bodies of water. What this poisonous substance does to dogs is just heartbreaking. Take, for example, the story of sweet Abby, Izzy, and Harpo, two little terriers and a poodle mix in Wilmington, North Carolina. Their loving owners thought that taking them to play in a pond would be a treat for the sweet pups. But 15 minutes after swimming and playing in the water, which was tainted with blue-green algae, all three dogs suffered from violent seizures and tragically passed away. Since then, their owners have committed their lives to spotting these algae blooms, erecting warning signs, and educating other dog owners. But doesn't that sound like a job for an environmental agency? The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has done nothing to warn the public of the presence of microcystin in the Illinois River, beyond one quiet press release on their low-traffic government website. Who checks a government website before taking their dogs swimming? The Illinois EPA must enact a more comprehensive and accessible plan, including mapping where these algae blooms are located, constructing signs and fencing to keep people and pets away from it, and widely releasing life-saving information. Dear Avaazers, The last few months have been intense. But amidst all the adversity, millions of us in this movement have risen beautifully and impacted the world in profound ways. Here's how -- Our biggest fundraiser EVER raised enough to provide tens of millions of meals and medical supplies for some of the world's most vulnerable people. Our investigation pushed Facebook to send fact checks to EVERYONE who'd interacted with harmful Covid-19 misinformation - Facebook even publicly thanked us! 2.3 million of us answered the UN Chief's call for a global ceasefire, he repeatedly cited our support and expressed his "deep gratitude" before taking the call to the UN Security Council. And just last week, a ceasefire resolution was adopted! Hundreds of thousands of us pledged actions to flatten the curve, started thousands of local groups to help out in our communities, and responded when the crisis hit by launching a campaign on our site every 45 seconds. And so much more... We helped inspire European leaders to take us out of this crisis with a Green Recovery Deal, hit back against Trump's decision to pull out of the WHO, fought for fair access to Covid-19 treatments, and helped win billions in debt relief for the poorest countries to help fight Covid... It's a time we'll never forget. Just months ago, who could have imagined that billions of us would stay home for weeks, and do billions of acts of kindness to protect one another from a deadly virus? This pandemic is far from over, but these stories, built brick by brick by the actions of millions of people, offer hope that we can make it through this crisis and anything else we will face. Together. May they be a reminder, that in our darkest days, we can shine our brightest. 130,000 of us raised enough to fund millions of meals and emergency help for communities in need It was early April when the UN warned that the world faced a famine of 'biblical proportions?. At Avaaz, almost every day brought new heartbreaking requests from every corner of the globe. I felt helpless. So we put out a call for help - and this community answered ? with our biggest fundraiser EVER! Over 130,000 of us donated, providing food and medical aid to forgotten communities in India and Pakistan; supporting indigenous families like Masha's, who's enjoying that juicy mango above, as well as giving emergency aid to displaced people in Syria and the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. And this is just the start -- while you're reading this, we?re helping friends in Haiti, Yemen, South Africa, Uganda, Peru, and? Days later, close friends and family started sharing false health advice. We began an investigation, and within weeks released a bombshell report showing Facebook was an epicenter of misinformation, and urging them to act. We shared our findings with Facebook before launching it. On the day we went public, they announced that they would alert ALL users who had engaged with harmful Covid-19 misinformation, and direct them to fact-checked corrections on the WHO website. We feared a new wave of coronavirus would be even deadlier in countries with fewer resources and weaker health systems. Hearing that G20 leaders would be meeting in days, we moved fast. Overnight we drafted a campaign, calling on them to cancel the debt of the world's poorest countries, so governments could spend that money to contain the virus. Sign Now Vladimir, We've all heard of the Grand Canyon, one of the most majestic and famous landmarks in all of the United States. But oil, gas and mining companies want to have their way with it. The Bureau of Land Management is the agency within the Department of the Interior which oversees these public lands. Its job is to protect these lands and conserve our natural environment, yet it is planning to sell them off to the highest bidder! Sign the petition if you don't want the Bureau of Land Management to sell off these protected lands! In Utah, just outside of Arches and Canyonlands national parks, the Bureau of Land Management has put 150,000 acres of land up for sale for the sole purpose of drilling. This method of getting oil has horrifying effects on the landscape ? spills can directly kill animals, or slowly decimate them by ruining their habits. These lands are home to extremely endangered species such as bighorn sheep, whose population could be lost forever if we are not careful. From the oil spills you hear about in the news to the climate change we are experiencing daily, there is plenty of proof that oil companies cannot be trusted with being careful. We cannot waste time twiddling our thumbs over this, because Trump and his administration will surely not. Please sign the petition and demand that acting director William Perry Pendley halt the sale of public lands in the U.S. to the fossil fuel industry immediately! Thank you, Kelsey B. How to prevent the next global pandemic A new report takes a look at the root causes and spread of the novel coronavirus and other zoonoses, diseases transmitted between animals and humans. A landmark scientific assessment is now out that explores how countries can prevent future pandemics like COVID-19. The publication, ?Preventing the next pandemic: zoonotic diseases and how to break the chain of transmission,? finds that in recent decades there has been a surge in zoonotic diseases?potentially deadly pathogens that jump between animals and humans. COVID-19 is a prime example, but Ebola, SARS, Zika and West Nile Virus also have their origins in the animal world. In fact, 60 percent of the microbes that infect humans begin in animals. In a normal year, these contagions kill at least 2 million people. This new report, a joint product the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Livestock Research Institute, finds that unless we adopt an integrated approach to healthcare, one that takes into account people, animals and the environment, we'll face more potentially catastrophic outbreaks in the years to come. Tell them to ditch BlackRock and make banking truly green! Sign the petition It's been called "the biggest driver of climate destruction on the planet". And now the EU wants its advice on green finance? The EU Commission has hired BlackRock, which manages billions in coal, oil and gas investments, as an advisor on its new sustainable banking regulations. They might as well be asking a shark how to keep beaches safe! Only a massive public outcry can stop this from becoming a climate catastrophe. Tell the Commission to get rid of BlackRock and pass banking laws that put our planet first! Add your name now to give BlackRock the boot. BlackRock has been trying to paint itself as "socially responsible" lately, and the EU's appointment is its biggest coup yet. But it's still cashing in on the coal, oil, and gas production that's driving our planet to the point of no return -- to the tune of $87 billion in holdings. With its financial muscle, BlackRock could be pushing for green change at the world's most powerful corporations. But it isn't. In fact, it's using investors' assets to block climate-related shareholder motions. If done correctly, the EU's green finance strategy could direct billions towards clean energy and other sustainable, Earth-friendly initiatives -- and away from dirty fossil fuels. That's why we can't let BlackRock sink its claws into it. We need to send a message to the EU that letting big banks and investment funds set the agenda on sustainable finance is a recipe for disaster. Demand the EU ditch BlackRock and create truly green finance laws. BlackRock and its fellow corporate vultures might have all the money, but people like you and me have the power to rein them in. It worked last year, when we, our partners, and over 120,000 SumOfUs members like you pushed the EU to crack down on the finance sector's fake green investments. With your pressure, they agreed on laws that will make it much more difficult to market funds as 'sustainable' that are not. Now, as the coronavirus crisis emboldens big businesses to become ever more shameless in their pursuit of profit, we've got to use that power again. That?s the reality for millions of farm animals across Europe, who will never know life outside the bars of a cage. Piglets, chickens and geese can all expect to spend their lives in impossibly cramped conditions. [1] Big farming corporations make millions in profits by treating the animals they breed incredibly cruelly. But in the next few weeks, we have a chance to get these brutal caging practices outlawed. Right now, those leaders are coming under pressure from corporate lobbyists, trying to convince them to look the other way when it comes to factory farming. We need to act now, to convince our leaders that no matter how powerful the big business lobby is, people power is stronger. A poll of public opinion would prove that if they don?t ban the cages, their voters will be horrified. Can you chip in, so we can pay for professional pollsters to poll Europeans about where they stand on cruel farming practices - and then publish results with a big splash in European media? Yes, I'll donate ?10 Yes, I'll donate ?20 Yes, I'll donate ?30 Yes, I'll surprise you! This fight isn?t a new one. But this time we have an EU Commissioner on Agriculture - Janusz Wojciechowski - who is outspoken about his love of animals, and the importance of treating them humanely. [2] Plus there?s already a huge ECI petition that gathered over one million signatures that proves there is support for the ban -- and the WeMove Europe community was part of it! [3] Many countries across Europe - including Sweden, Austria and Germany - have taken action independently to reduce their numbers of caged farm animals. But the other side of the story is still bleak. In Ireland, for example, over two million animals are caged at any given time: that is 56% of all animals farmed in Ireland. [4] If politicians see public polling that proves they have widespread support for the ban, they won?t hesitate to back it when it comes to a vote. But we need the evidence to convince them. Can you help us to pay for a poll, to prove that Europeans everywhere want to see a permanent ban on caging animals in farming? And who?s behind it? You guessed it, Bayer?s bee-killing pesticides. Thanks to you, Bayer is finding it harder and harder to sell neonics in Europe. So it decided to take its bee-killing business to Africa and flood the market with cheap neonics. Beekeepers have already reported plummeting numbers. A brave group of scientists in Ghana is fighting hard to get Bayer?s neonics banned, before it?s too late. But they?re operating on a shoestring -- so they?ve asked for your help to build the evidence they desperately need to send Bayer?s pesticides packing. As cases of COVID-19 skyrocket around the country, the hardest-hit states are once again beginning to experience a shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers on the front lines. We need to get our healthcare heroes PPE now. Sign the petition here. This was not okay at the start of the pandemic, but four months in when we?ve seen this problem before leaves our federal and state governments with no excuse. There?s an urgent need to get our healthcare workers PPE now. And in the future, America needs to fully invest in an infrastructure to produce our own healthcare equipment and fulfill and eventually exceed the depleted national stockpile. Sign Now Vladimir, A sad, lonely seal is rotting away under pounds of seaweed in a Spanish zoo. Photos circulating on the internet show one of the animal's eyes is swollen and most likely infected, the other shadowed under a shoot of seaweed that seems to be lodged painfully into the seal's pores. Its flippers scrape the bottom of its filthy enclosure, which contains barely enough water to cover the marine mammal. But the rest of the seal is totally concealed under pounds and pounds of heavy, tight, painful seaweed. The condition that this seal is in can only be a result of years of neglect. The Mini Zoo in the Magdalena Peninsula in Santander, Spain, where the seal miserably lives, can clearly not be trusted to care for any animals. Zoos are already precarious environments ? caging and displaying wild animals for economic gain and human entertainment almost always leads to exploitation and abuse. This is, sadly, a perfect example of that. Please sign the petition and demand that the zoo be shut down at once, and all of its animals be sent to sanctuaries! Thank you, Lauren W. But for decades, the NRC has been badly falling down on the job. The NRC now wants to ax one of its most basic safety regulations: emergency plans for nuclear disasters. The NRC wants to rewrite the rules so that certain kinds of new reactors will be exempt from providing site-specific Emergency Response Plans that must be approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Instead, the proposal would let plant owners determine what the size of the Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) should be?or whether offsite emergency planning is necessary at all. This proposal would leave the public unprotected in the case of a large release of radiation. The NRC would let newfangled reactors that are untested and unproven off the hook and allow plant owners to police themselves when it comes to safety. When disaster strikes, public officials and plant operators would have to figure out?on the fly?how to protect people, who and when to evacuate, how to notify people, how to transport and shelter them, and more. The comment period for this terrible idea closes in three weeks. Tell the NRC: Don?t play with our emergency plans. Since the Three Mile Island disaster, emergency planning has been a bedrock of nuclear safety regulation for the last 40 years. It is the very last line of defense to protect public health and safety when all else fails. If anything, the nuclear disasters at Fukushima and Chernobyl prove that the NRC?s emergency planning requirements should be more stringent, not less. The NRC seems to think that the small modular reactors and non-light water reactors covered in their proposal don?t need the same level of emergency preparedness as their older counterparts. But there?s no reason to think this. They may be smaller than current reactors, but they would still contain large amounts of radiological material. And since they are untested and unproven, they should be at least as tightly regulated as their older counterparts, if not more so. With its latest proposal, the NRC is putting the economic interests of the nuclear industry ahead of the health and safety of the American people. The comment period for this terrible idea is open right now. Tell the NRC: Don?t play with our emergency plans. We need emergency planning for nuclear facilities more than ever. Climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of natural disasters that could cause nuclear emergencies, as well as complicate emergency response plans. But the NRC doesn?t even mention climate change or extreme weather events in their proposal. It?s high time the NRC put the health and safety of the American people above the economic interests of the nuclear industry. The comment period for this terrible idea closes in three weeks. Tell the NRC: Don?t play with our emergency plans. We?ll keep you updated about this and other nuclear policy developments during the rest of the summer. Climate change has destroyed salmon runs in Canada's rivers. Now, grizzlies are starving. Sign Now In 2019, Holly the grizzly bear won a glamorous award when staff at Alaska's Katmai National Park declared her the winner of Fat Bear Week. Holly's delightful girth is actually a critical part of her survival ? specifically, making it through the brutally cold winters while she and her brethren are hibernating. Amazingly, she will burn up one-third of her body mass by the time she emerges in the spring. But, unlike Holly, countless other bears in nearby Canada are likely to starve to death this coming winter, and all because of climate change. Canada is warming at twice the global average speed. Climate change has particularly ravaged salmon runs, decimating a key food supply that grizzlies need in order to stay alive. The situation is so dire that volunteers have manually delivered hundreds of pounds of salmon to areas where bears are starving, in the hopes that wildlife will feast on the fish in time to fatten them up before they hibernate. But this is clearly not a long-term solution. Canada needs to get serious about curbing emissions and saving species threatened by climate change! Sign the petition to demand that the province of British Columbia and Canadian federal officials create an action plan to save bears and salmon before it's too late. We hope you can join us for this important event when we?ll be discussing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission?s (NRC) latest terrible idea and how you can help stop it. The NRC has invented a new and misleading name for nuclear waste, calling it ?Very Low Level,? or VLLW. The fact is that VLLW is not only Very Long-Lasting Waste, but also extremely dangerous to human health and the environment. We?re calling the telebriefing ?Coming Soon to Your Local Landfill: Nuclear Waste, Courtesy of the NRC? because that?s exactly what the NRC?s proposal would do: Allow dangerous nuclear waste to be dumped into your local landfill, just like regular trash. Since the NRC?s VLLW proposal would almost certainly result in nuclear waste leaks into our water, air, crops, and communities, we thought you?d like to hear more about it and what you can do to stop it. Join us on Wednesday, July 15 at 8PM ET/5PM PT for this important telebriefing. With more and more reactors shutting down, the industry is preparing to unleash a flood of radioactive waste across the country?and nuclear corporations want to dispose of it cheaply, regardless of the impacts on our health, clean air, and safe drinking water. To help the industry cut corners, the NRC has invented a new and deceptive name for it, calling it ?Very Low Level,? or VLLW. Powerful players in the nuclear industry are pushing for this change, and the NRC may give them what they want unless we stop them. Join us on Wednesday, July 15 at 8PM ET/5PM PT for this important telebriefing. The briefing will feature several experts on the NRC?s proposal, including NIRS?s own Diane D?Arrigo, Jane Williams from California Communities Against Toxics, Dan Hirsch from the Committee to Bridge the Gap, and Terry Lodge from the Toledo Safe Energy Coalition. You?ll be able to ask questions during the call and also on Twitter by using the hashtag #VLLWbriefing. We hope you?ll join us on Wednesday, July 15 at 8PM ET/5PM PT for this important telebriefing. They lied. Sign Now Trophy hunting gets its name from the horrifying tradition of keeping a part of the slaughtered animal as a trophy. Heads of lions, skins of tigers, feet from elephants, or horns from rhinos are among some of the most prized souvenirs. We all remember the tragic killing of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe, perpetrated by a dentist from the U.S. who paid $55,000 for the privilege of murdering a highly treasured and endangered animal and bringing its body parts home as trophies. Oftentimes, the best way to discourage trophy hunting is to ban the importing of these trophies, since most trophy hunters ? typically the rich and elite ? come from abroad into countries where these precious and endangered animals live. It has now been 5 years since Cecile the lion was murdered, which means the UK has spent 5 years offering empty promises of a hunting trophy imports ban without any follow through. The wild lion population has plummeted by 98% in the past 70 years, and could totally disappear in the next 30. Sign the petition if you think enough is enough! The United Kingdom's Parliament must immediately introduce legislation banning the importation of hunting trophies before one more animal dies for this horrible sport! Thank you, Lauren W. We need to gather your views to show the ECB that a green, fair and sustainable economy is the number one priority for Europeans. It will only take a minute, are you ready? Results will be submitted directly to the President of the ECB, Christine Lagarde. GIVE YOUR OPINION A complete U-turn! Until a month ago, climate was not even an item on the ECB's political agenda. Thanks to your mobilization and the excellent work of NGOs, ECB President Christine Lagarde has for the first time committed herself to "greener" structural changes*. And tomorrow, at its strategy meeting, the ECB could turn its words into acts by deciding to make climate THE priority of its new monetary policy. Now is the time to put our demands forward! That's why, we have created a very short and simple survey to gather the views of those concerned, namely YOU, on what the ECB's priorities should be. It?s high time to remind the ECB of its mission: work for people and the planet, not the industrial and financial lobbies. Vladimir, please take a minute to express your opinion: Results will be handed directly to the President of the ECB, Christine Lagarde. TAKE THE SURVEYSo far, the ECB has always refused to put our environmental and social priorities at the heart of its decisions. In order to preserve "stability", the ECB simply keeps on financing all companies, including the biggest polluters, those convicted of fraud or even arms manufacturers! As the ECB is in the midst of a strategic review of its monetary policy, it has set up a public consultation, a procedure open to all, that should make it possible to evaluate its monetary policy and adapt it. The thing is, the official form is long, complicated and some questions seem totally disconnected from our concrete concerns. That?s why we have decided to offer you a very short, simplified survey to gather YOUR views on the ECB's priorities. Let's show the ECB that these discussions will not take place without us. We are in a state of climate emergency and there is no way we will let the ECB get away with "future" environmental commitments, we must take action now. Yes, you read that right: trillions. Decisions made by the G20 finance ministers when they meet on Saturday could influence our world for decades to come. So now is the time to have your say: tweet at your finance minister and share what a truly #JustRecovery looks like and why we need it. Add your voice Right now, politicians are desperate to return to normal as fast as possible. But ?normal? was rapid climate breakdown, growing inequalities, and fossil fuel corporations getting billions from governments to keep drilling and polluting. This money needs to go towards a future that works for people like you and me, not polluters and billionaires. With the global spotlight on recovery this week, we need to make sure it's our vision of a greener and more just future that reaches people, journalists and politicians across the world. So we?re delivering our messages directly to the finance ministers on Twitter. Join the online action now It?s time to raise our voices and demand they invest in a Just Recovery ? so we can unleash a wave of people power strong enough to challenge the big banks and corporations that typically have the ear of government ministers. We?re writing to you again because we still have a chance to beat back this dangerous proposal?if you take action today. To recap: As more nuclear facilities shut down, their operators are trying to cut corners by disposing of their radioactive waste cheaply. By labeling dangerous nuclear waste as ?very low-level,? the NRC is making it easy for operators to get rid of their waste on the cheap, bypassing regulations that protect the health and safety of our communities. The NRC?s proposal would pave the way for dangerous nuclear waste to end up in our local landfills, just like regular trash. Regular landfills are not monitored or regulated to manage nuclear materials. If this radioactive waste ends up in our landfills, it?s almost inevitable that it will leak into our air, water, soil, and communities. If you already sent comments to the NRC about this, thank you! But the more they hear from you, the better. If you haven?t sent comments yet, the deadline for comments to the NRC about this dangerous proposal is July 20. Tell the NRC: Don?t dump nuclear waste in my local landfill. The NRC is trying to paint this as a minor deal?a mere ?reinterpretation? of regulation. In fact, what they?re doing is a big deal: It?s the equivalent of rewriting a major environmental law and doing so illegally. They?re also doing it under the cover of the Covid-19 pandemic, without significant input from the communities that might be affected by this major change in regulations. Whether you already sent comments to the NRC about this or not, it?s time for them to hear from you. The deadline for comments to the NRC is only 5 days away. Tell the NRC: Don?t dump nuclear waste in my local landfill. The NRC?s bid to allow certain kinds of nuclear waste to be disposed of like regular trash is part of a pattern. Time and time again, the NRC has been putting the economic interests of the nuclear industry ahead of the health and safety of our communities. The job of the NRC is to protect the American people, not advance the interests of a dying industry. Soon we?ll be pushing back in a big way against this broad pattern. But in the meantime, we?re fighting the VLLW proposal with everything we?ve got?including your support. Tell the NRC: Don?t dump nuclear waste in my local landfill. Expect to hear more from us soon about how we?re pushing back against the NRC?s dangerous kowtowing to the nuclear industry. In the meantime, stay healthy and safe. The collective trauma of living through a global pandemic coupled with the disruption in routine is enough to make anyone fall behind. But for one Black teenager in Eastern Michigan, who has a learning disability, falling behind in school resulted in her being locked behind bars. Grace was required to wake up on time for class and complete certain coursework when her school transitioned to online learning. According to Judge Mary Ellen Brennan, when Grace failed to do these things, it made her a threat to the community. Sign the petition to demand that Grace's caseworker and the prosecutor bring this case in front of Judge Mary Ellen Brennan again since it is clear that this girl should not be locked up! As it turns out, Grace's performance in school was on par with her predominantly white peers. But the caseworker didn't even bother to find out whether her performance was normal ? she just saw a Black teen and assumed the worst. The caseworker also didn't bother to learn that Grace has ADHD, making distance learning especially difficult for her. The school didn't provide any extra support to Grace for her learning disability and then the system locked her up over it. Even worse, the extremely contagious disease COVID-19 is running rampant in detention facilities all over the U.S., putting Grace's health in danger. Sign the petition to get Grace out of juvenile detention, where she is at risk of contracting COVID-19! Thank you, Kelsey B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Now we can join too! If millions tell Facebook we're boycotting ads and download an ad blocker, we can create a new wave of pressure and force Facebook's hand. Help stop the hate: Join the facebook ad boycott Facebook is reeling as corporate giants ? from Coke to Ford to Starbucks ? suspend their ads on the platform until it cleans up hate speech. Ads bring Facebook 99% of its income, so this boycott is hitting where it hurts ? and now we can join in, too. If millions of people say we won?t let Facebook show us any ads until they clean up the hate -- and download a simple, free adblocker -- we can generate a new people-powered media wave and double the pressure on Facebook to act. We need massive participation for this to work ? click below to say you'll #BlockTheAds until Facebook gets in line: Yes, I?ll join the Facebook ad boycott It?s high time Facebook cleans itself up ? it?s loaded with pages promoting white supremacy, misogyny and more, and Facebook simply refuses to step up and police it. Already 800 companies have joined the boycott, pulling millions of dollars of income from Facebook. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is on the back foot, holding public employee meetings, sending his policy chief on TV to do damage control, and even agreeing to meet with the coalition leading the boycott effort. But he?s also saying he bets advertisers will be back ?soon enough?. We need to add the pressure right NOW, with millions of users joining in to choke Facebook?s business model until they stop benefitting from hate. And we don't have to block ALL sites -- we can adjust the settings to just block Facebook, so the companies helping push Facebook can still receive ad revenue elsewhere. It?s within our power to force Facebook to change. Let?s capitalize on the energy created by the business boycott, and start one of our own -- tell Facebook you're not helping them get rich off hate: Click to join the boycott of Facebook ads and download a free adblocker Our community fights every day to hold big corporations accountable. Lloyd?s of London quietly insures this planet wrecking pipeline. If we force Lloyd's of London to stop insuring the project -- we could kill this pipeline forever. Sign the petition Lloyd?s of London is insuring an oil pipeline that?s poisoning Indigenous land in Canada. The Trans Mountain pipeline is a mega-oil highway, transporting crude oil across Canada. Just last month, it spilled 190,000 of thick tar sands oil near a sacred Indigenous burial ground. This is just one of 85 spills from this pipeline in the last 10 years. We can?t wait around for another spill to destroy more Indigenous land -- so the affected communities are demanding insurance companies drop this dangerous pipeline. Lloyd?s of London is in the middle of a huge controversy as its original owners have profited off colonialism and the slave trade. Its insurance contract on Trans Mountain pipeline is also going to expire in August. A huge public outcry about its on-going role in colonialism could force the insurance giant to pull out and leave this mega-oil project that threatens Indigenous people?s way of life. Add your name to demand Lloyd?s of London stop insuring this planet-wrecking pipeline. If this pipeline is expanded, it will also lead to climate disaster. Unfortunately for our planet, right before the COVID-19 crisis hit, the Canadian courts greenlit the expansion of Trans Mountain pipeline ? a reckless project that would increase oil tanker traffic by seven hundred percent, endangering the already struggling Orca whale population. And if you think the global pandemic would stop this pipeline, think again -- despite social distancing measures, construction on the climate destroying expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline has already started. The start of construction also comes the instalment of ?man camps? which have been linked to violence against Indigenous women and to the spread of COVID-19 in Native communities. Insurance companies hold the key to stopping this pipeline -- if the pipeline can?t get corporations to pay for cleaning up its spills, it can?t operate. And two of the biggest insurance companies that insure Trans Mountain have already pulled out because of the pipeline's effect on the climate. Earlier this month, after public outcry, Lloyd?s of London apologized for its role in the slave trade and colonialism. Yet, those words are empty as Lloyd?s continues to actively participate in the colonization of Indigenous people by insuring this pipeline. Lloyd's insurance contract runs out next month, and now while it's still in the middle of it PR disaster, is the time to push Lloyd's to uninsure the Trans Mountain pipeline. Tell Lloyd?s to stop insuring the Trans Mountain pipeline. SumOfUs has forced financial institutions to pull out of dangerous pipelines before. When over 360,000 members like you signed a petition calling on major banks to pull the plug on the Dakota Access pipeline during the heart of the Standing Rock protests, the largest bank in Norway decided to pull funding the day after we brought your names to their headquarters. And just last week, the US courts forced Dakota Access pipeline to drain all its oil and stop operating. Activists were able to stop the Dakota Access pipeline because we took action over and over. And together, we can stop the Trans Mountain pipeline too, but only if keep the pressure on. Please take action now. Join WeMove members all over Europe to ensure our politicians hear this message. Sign NOW Hi, The last few months haven?t been short on shocks and surprises. But now, here?s another one: some of the world?s richest people have banded together to tell governments they want to pay more tax [1]. They know that raising taxes for the wealthy is an essential part of recovering from the coronavirus crisis. Their timing couldn?t be better. Starting today, European leaders are ramping up discussions on the plans for the coronavirus recovery package. We have just a few days to convince them that taxing the richest people and corporations should be part of the plan. Politicians don?t always like raising taxes, especially for big business. It?s vital they understand that European citizens know that - for once - the millionaires are right: raising taxes has to be part of the corona recovery. Then our leaders will understand they have public support to go ahead and do the right thing. Join WeMove members all over Europe to make sure our politicians hear our message: it?s time to tax the wealthy and big corporations to fund our corona recovery. Higher taxes on the wealthy to pay for corona recovery, sign now! We?ve all been hurt in one way or another from the coronavirus crisis: we miss being with our loved ones, some of us have been bereaved, and all of us are facing economic uncertainty. But none of those burdens are borne equally and, too often, it?s the people who are already facing poverty or hardship who pay the highest price. Big businesses often pay less tax than the rest of us. They recruit clever accountants to help them keep their tax bills low. But now, some of the wealthiest people have stepped forward to say that from now on, it?s vital that the richest pay their fair share of the cost of recovery. There are already leaders in Europe who agree. Charles Michel, the European Council President said he wants to tax big corporations to fund the recovery. [2] But he needs EU countries to agree and he can only achieve this with public support. Can you take two minutes to sign the petition and help make sure taxes on big business and the wealthy fund our coronavirus recovery? Big corporations should pay higher taxes for corona recovery, sign now! We know that people power can help close the gap between the world?s richest and poorest. In the 1990?s, it was a people-powered campaign that convinced rich countries to cancel much of their debt with the world?s least wealthy countries, freeing the money those governments needed to fund schools and hospitals.[3] Now, we need to see the same people power pushing for a just recovery from coronavirus - and that means the world?s biggest businesses and wealthiest people funding their fair share of recovery. Join our campaign to make sure taxes help to fund our recovery from coronavirus. For a more fair Europe, David (London), Virginia (Madrid), Marta(Warsaw) and the entire WeMove Europe team PS. Did you know that Apple has been accused of dodging 13 billion Euros in taxes. [4] This scandal shows that we need to fix the big corporations tax system in the EU. Sign the petition so the corporations who have continued to bring in huge benefits while paying very little tax pay their fair share and help fund our recovery. We?re joining a group of activists to sue Trump?s environment department in court -- and make a last-ditch effort to stop glyphosate. But we need your help to pull it off. Can you chip in $2 to stop toxic glyphosate? Donate $2 now The Trump government just announced that glyphosate will be drenching our food for another 15 years -- until 2035! Scientists are outraged: The whole approval process was a total joke -- Trump?s environmental agency ignored just about every study that wasn?t paid for by Bayer-Monsanto. And there's a good reason for that: Trump is really close to Monsanto?s bosses. The US is one of the biggest exporters of agricultural products -- so that means glyphosate may end up on your plate, wherever you are. But you can still fight back. If we can get a court to force the Trump administration to look at the real science, we stand a good chance of getting glyphosate banned after all. The first court date is just weeks away -- but winning this kind of legal case doesn't come cheap. Can you chip in $2 to sue Trump and get glyphosate banned? Monsanto has known for 20 years that its weedkiller is likely to cause a rare form of blood cancer called non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma. But instead of protecting the public, Monsanto?s execs buried the evidence, manipulated regulators and bought scientists so it could keep poisoning people and planet. When Trump assumed office, one of his first meetings was with Bayer-Monsanto?s chief executives. Trump made it clear from the start that he?s got Bayer-Monsanto?s back and that the pesticide giant need not worry about any regulation that will keep you and me safe from this toxic poison. Trump?s corruption comes as no surprise, but here?s the thing: we have a once in lifetime opportunity to overturn this phony ruling by Trump?s agency. That?s why we decided to back the lawsuit of our friends at the Pesticide Action Network to sue the Trump administration. All we need is your help! Can you help pay for a lawsuit that will hold Trump and his cronies accountable? There?s real momentum in the movement to get glyphosate banned all over the world -- and it?s driven by you. And where governments are lagging behind, corporations are bending to consumer pressure. Last month, Kellogg?s announced it will take steps to phase out the use of glyphosate to dry oats and wheat before harvest. We can force Trump?s environmental agency to reverse its decision -- but we need your help to make it happen. Can you chip in now? Yes, I'll chip in $2 now to help get glyphosate banned. An international technology competition to design software that can support well-informed land use decisions is launched today by the Group on Earth Observation Land Degradation Neutrality (GEO-LDN) Initiative. As reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, up to 70% of the Earth?s ice-free land has already been transformed from its natural state, mainly to meet the demand for food, raw materials and human settlements. ?As the pace of land conversion continues to rise, we need to shift the focus of land conservation efforts to the point when land use decisions are made, so that the trade-offs from competing demands for limited land resources can be navigated successfully,? says the UNCCD Lead Scientist Dr. Barron Orr. Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) is a unique approach that balances the expected loss of productive land with the recovery of already degraded areas. LDN strategically places its three pillars of conservation, sustainable land management and restoration in the context of land use planning. Today, over 120 countries have committed to set national voluntary LDN targets. However, as reported by the UNCCD Science-Policy Interface (SPI), limited national progress is evident when it comes to establishing effective integrated land use planning systems and embedding a neutrality mechanism into them. Recognizing the importance of filling this critical gap, UNCCD country Parties tasked the SPI with the development of a demonstration, resulting from an open call, of how LDN can be incorporated into existing open source land use planning and trade-off analysis tools. To address this mandate, the GEO-LDN Initiative and the SPI are launching a competition. The challenge is to develop a software that can support the implementation of a ?neutrality mechanism? within a well-established open source model. ?This no-net-loss land use planning module would help users to map anticipated future impacts of land use decisions for a given area. A planner would be able to generate a scenario where all expected losses of productive land can be counterbalanced with planned gains for each land type,? explains Dr. Orr. The purpose of the competition is to inspire innovation and collective action towards LDN. Eligible participants include teams composed of at least one technical implementer and at least one end-user, such as a local government institution involved in territorial planning, a civil society organization engaged in sustainable land management or an indigenous community fighting against land degradation and land take. Winning solutions will be promoted by the GEO-LDN Initiative and the UNCCD for use by countries who are setting voluntary LDN targets and reporting on SDG Indicator 15.3.1 ?Proportion of land that is degraded over total land area.? The winning team will receive financial and technical support valued at USD100,000 to transform their prototype into an operational and scalable tool. It helps people, communities and countries to create wealth, grow economies and secure enough food and water and energy, by ensuring land users have an enabling environment for sustainable land management. Through partnerships, the Convention?s 197 Parties set up robust systems to manage drought promptly and effectively. Sign to demand freedom for the remaining animals at the Grandview Aquarium! Sign Now Vladimir, The Grandview Aquarium in Guangzhou, China is a pathetic excuse for an animal park. Actually located inside of a shopping mall, it's a prison-like facility where animals are routinely exploited and neglected. Up until recently, one of its many prisoners was a polar bear named Pizza, who had been nicknamed "the world's saddest bear." He lived in a tiny glass cage, desperately staring into shoppers' eyes to beg for his freedom. Care2 members like you spoke out, and Pizza was transferred out of the Grandview Aquarium. But this horrible place is still home to many other animals, all of which are being subjected to heart-wrenching conditions. The aquarium has been called a living hell for good reason, and it needs to be closed down immediately. Marine mammals like seals and whales usually have a vast ocean to call their home. Being forced to live in an empty tank in a dimly lit facility is absolute torture. And how could an aquarium on the second floor of a shopping mall be an appropriate place for massive, wild animals? The animals here need your help. Sign the petition urging the city of Guangzhou to shut down the Grandview Aquarium and release these animals to a sanctuary now! Thank you for all that you do, Miranda B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. The remaining animals at the Grandview Aquarium deserve to live in peace in a sanctuary where they can enjoy their remaining years ? not be holed away inside a shopping mall. About the UNCCD The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is an international agreement on good land stewardship. It helps people, communities, and countries to create wealth, grow economies and secure enough food and water and energy, by ensuring land users have an enabling environment for sustainable land management. Through partnerships, the Convention?s 197 Parties set up robust systems to manage land degradation and drought promptly and effectively. Good land stewardship based on a sound policy and science helps integrate and accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, builds resilience to climate change and prevents biodiversity loss. Land also plays a key role in the prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, securing rural livelihoods and creating green jobs, supporting community resilience and maintaining the sustainable delivery of ecosystem services. If the agency succeeds in overturning certain Obama-era regulations, coal plants can dump more noxious waste into rivers and oceans, and won't even be required to track how it affects the groundwater nearby ? the groundwater that becomes our drinking water. Exposure to these toxic materials can lead to cancer, birth defects, and a whole host of other health issues. Over 90% of plants using coal power have detected dangerously high levels of toxic metals in surrounding groundwater, and that???s with these regulations already in place! Plus, those who live within three miles of plants using coal power are most often low-income households or people of color. While these already marginalized groups will suffer greatly, Andrew Wheeler, the EPA's administrator, proudly boasted that coal utility companies would save between $28 and $31 million a year. On July 21, 2020 the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations released a report which accuses China of ?digital authoritarianism? by using its technological rise to conduct surveillance and censor information around the world. b.. The report considers a ban on Chinese-developed software including the TikTok app which has come under much public scrutiny in recent months. There have also been allegations of facial recognition software and other surveillance technology embedded within these apps. c.. The Chinese government has also used city-wide surveillance systems to oppress Uighurs in Xinjiang and encroach on the freedom and privacy of Tibetans. On top of this, the Chinese Communist Party has conducted surveillance and digitally threatened Uighurs living outside of China who are willing to speak out. Why is it important? a.. China has been known to censor the internet but it now has a method of easily exporting this technology to other authoritarian regimes around the world. Because it primarily uses cell phones, it can also be easily distributed to the masses and can be used to target youth populations. b.. China has used its newfound place as a one of the global tech leaders to create a new model of governance over the internet and digital communication. It has also focused on exporting its technology around the world, including Venezuela, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe and others. c.. China?s influence around the world varies. Some countries like South Africa have embraced Chinese technology while others like Great Britain have rejected it completely. Inside China, foreign tech is almost universally banned including sites like Google, Facebook and Twitter. What can you do? a.. These same masked, unidentified kidnappers are charging at innocent folks without warning, shooting them with munitions, and spraying them with toxic chemicals. Sounds a lot like an open warzone, doesn't it? Well, this is taking place in Portland, Oregon. The victims are American citizens, and the perpetrators are agents of their federal government. Sign the petition today and demand that Congress withhold funding from the Department of Homeland Security until it halts this violence against the American people! The federal agents are from multiple agencies, including Customs and Border Control and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ? two institutions that are quite comfortable perpetrating violence against non-citizens, and that are also known for their unwaning devotion to Trump. Sending them into cities where they answer to no local authority and having them inflict terror onto its peaceful residents is a horrifying breach of civil rights. Their plans are only expanding to more and more cities like Chicago and L.A. and the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security himself has said that they "don't need invitations by the state" to come in and terrorize their cities. We are "going to do that whether they like us there or not." So even though local authorities don't want this to be happening, it is! Late last week, from Bangladesh to Brazil, Germany to the Philippines, people protested, projected, and spoke truth to power, urging the world?s most powerful economic leaders to fund a Just Recovery in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our calls for justice also dominated the conversation online around the G20 meeting of finance ministers and Central Bank governors. They?ve definitely heard us ? and they know we won?t stand for the usual fossil fuel bailouts, tax cuts for the rich, and debt-burdens for poor countries that only make the climate crisis worse. No big announcements came out of the meeting ? it wasn?t a formal decision-making space ? but this was only the beginning. Unfortunately, tourists on a beach in Kazakhstan answered that question. When a seal swam close to the shore, a group of men thought this would be the perfect opportunty to force it to take photos with their children. How did they accomplish that? By wading out into the water and beating the poor animal with metal rods until it passed out from the pain and trauma. Once unconscious, the men dragged the seal's limp body back onto the beach. There, children posed with the tortured animal's form for photos and "played" with it. After the ordeal ? with the seal still unconscious ? the men simply tossed its body back into the Caspian sea, where it may well have died. If it was lucky enough to survive, it almost certainly sustained severe wounds and possibly internal injuries. What happened on this beach is so horrific, it's hard to believe. Message-ID: Hi, We call things historic when they determine our lives for years to come. And something truly historic happened on Monday. As the coronavirus wrecks our lives and livelihoods, the EU has, for the first time in our history, taken action as one by acquiring a huge loan, in order to pass on the money to those worst affected by the virus. Many thought it was impossible, yet our community fought hard to demand what was needed as soon as the crisis hit. Massive amounts of money will soon be transferred - so massive our economies could start to move from the ?old?, to the ?new?. From a model that upholds unequal healthcare, air pollution, the destruction of nature and our climate, to a model that is green and fair. Sadly, the deal agreed upon by our leaders does not support a truly green recovery. The fight is not over -- but we only have a few months to turn things around. We will fight for governments receiving the money to make their investments green and social. We will pressure EU leaders to only approve transformative plans, and push back on measures that will require austerity. We will call for the loans to be paid back by taxes on the biggest corporations, who today often pay less tax than citizens. To do this we need your help. A regular donation will allow us to be nimble and adapt our plans as opportunities arise. Vladimir, can you help our WeMove Europe community to continue making history? I?ll donate ?7 I?ll donate ?14 I?ll donate ?21 I?ll surprise you! With your donation there?s a lot we can do. It?s thanks to the donations of so many of you that we got this far in the first place! Look at some examples of what our community has done to put pressure on decision makers: a.. Thousands of us sent emails and tweets to Members of the European Parliament to ask them to present our petition in the plenary debate -- and it worked! b.. Thanks to our community?s donations we took over the prime space of Politico, a key media outlet read by national governments' and EU? politicians in the week before an important meeting of all 27 EU heads of state and government. c.. Our joint campaign with other fantastic organisations also took over the homepages of some of the main news sites: d.. With WWF Germany, on the 1st July we stood our ground in front of the Environment Ministry in Berlin, the day Germany took over the Presidency of the European Council. Svenja Schulze, the German Environment Minister, listened to our demands and responded officially: (Thanks to all who support a more sustainable new start of the EU after Covid-19. I see this as a great backing. With the climate protection law, the coal phase-out and the economic stimulus package, Germany can be proud of itself. Now it's time for Europe to stick together and everyone to do more for the climate.) Without your donations none of the above would have happened -- and we wouldn?t have made progress. But progress doesn?t mean victory, and the investments we can expect with EU money won?t bring the ecological transition Europe needs - unless we fight! Could you chip in a few euros to give our community a fighting chance? I?ll donate ?7 I?ll donate ?14 I?ll donate ?21 I?ll surprise you! And that?s not all: we saw many more magnificent displays of people power across the continent! a.. With Avaaz, Transport and Environment, Greenpeace and many other awesome organisations, we brought our demands to politicians. This time, it was in Brussels at the first in person meeting of the 27 EU leaders, when the final agreement was signed. We handed-over a stunning 1.3 million signatures, brought together from the WeMove, Avaaz, and Sum of Us supporters, to the cabinet of Charles Michel, President of the European Council: ? Eric De Mildt / Greenpeace b.. Tens of thousands of us made heads of state and government listen to us directly, using Twitter, Facebook or email, just before they held preparatory bilateral meetings. That?s the beauty of our community. For example, when Macron and Rutte met for dinner, our community served them some tasty appetizers, when thousands of us directed our demands to their Facebook pages en masse! The next weeks and months will be intense with a frenzy of negotiations in the European and national parliaments, between EU leaders, the European Parliament and the Commission. Each one is an opportunity to work towards a different tomorrow. We have a huge opportunity ahead of us: we can?t let it slip. The good news is that we are best placed to make a difference. We are a European community ready to take action, with campaigners in different EU countries ready to deploy the right tactics at the right moment, and with strong partners who work with us to deliver our messages. We also have the tools to help connect our community to decision makers, by sending them direct and personal messages via email, Twitter, Facebook - and even to call them on the phone! Your financial support is what makes all of this possible, so please chip in a few euros a month. Let's do this! Cancel culture is a term used when people disagree on a company's or individual?s controversial opinions. This has led to boycotts of prominent brands and celebrities, such as Goya, J.K Rowling, and Nick Cannon. b.. Other celebrities and government officials have come into light because their actions were deemed inappropriate, such as wearing blackface or making derogatory comments of a certain race or gender. c.. It also has an impact on taking down monuments of controversial slave owners, traders, or segregationists and potentially renaming military bases in America. Why is this important? a.. Cancel culture is itself controversial. Many critics claim that boycotting organizations and individuals lead to suppression of free speech while supporters maintain that it is a populist-driven process that helps set societal boundaries. b.. Nowadays, famous individuals who have made insensitive remarks at any point in their career about a controversial topic face backlash from the public, often leading to the loss of their social clout. c.. Cancel culture also has an impact at the university and collegiate level. The hashtag #CancelYale was trending on Twitter which called for Yale University to change their name since it was named after a British slave trade owner named Elihu Yale. Learn more a.. Help save the "burning bulls" of Spain before more innocent animals are tormented to death! Sign Now Vladimir, In many towns in eastern Spain, a terrible tradition still persists: the "toros embolados" or "correbous," in which flaming torches are strapped to the top of bulls' heads, before they're released to run through the streets. The flames attached to their horns often burn for hours, leaving the animals in a state of extreme distress and terror. In a desperate attempt to put out the blaze and escape their agony, many bulls have run directly into walls and wooden posts, killing themselves in the process. In addition to causing unwarranted cruelty against bulls, these festivals are also very dangerous for the public. It's not hard to see how tying burning torches to a terrified animal's head might cause destruction and chaos. Just recently, a man in the town of Castell??n died after being crushed by an enraged bull. Luckily, some cities have already banned the embolados bulls, like Valencia, which banned the practice in 2016. Now it's time for the governments of the Autonomous Communities of Valencia and Catalonia to act. Sign the petition and ask the governments of Valencia and Catalonia to ban the toros embolados and correbous during festivals. Thank you for all that you do, Miranda B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Then: The Climate Reality Project team sprang into action, innovating and redesigning our program to meet the moment, and bring it online. Now: We just added thousands of new Climate Reality Leaders, from over 130 countries, through our first-ever virtual training. In fact, so many from around the globe were signed up, we had to schedule a second training for August! So: It?s clear our work isn?t close to being done. Here?s where you come in. We need your help to rise to the challenge and build this grassroots army of activists to fight the existential threat of climate change. Today we?re launching a campaign to ramp up our organizing efforts for the rest of 2020. This is a worldwide effort and we need 200 donors to step up by July 31 to build this movement. Will you join us with a gift of $5 or more today? DONATE TODAY >> Change happens when we organize people to speak up in their local communities. If Bayer?s shady behaviour is anything to go by, it?s highly likely this is true. We urgently need to gather the evidence to persuade garden centers to stop cooperating with Bayer?s toxic business. We?ve planned out an undercover investigation and found a specialist lab that can test these plants for pesticides. Message-ID: Hi, We need to keep up the pressure - it?s working! In the face of public outcry and pressure, the Prime Minister is attempting to rebrand the National Covid Coordination Commission (NCCC). Yesterday?s announcement to shift the NCCC to an ?advisory board? and expand its membership is a response to the public scrutiny that our Fossil Fuel Watch campaign has put this group under. Since launching Fossil Fuel Watch in March, we have been tracking and exposing the fossil fuel lobby?s demands by sounding the alarm in the media and raising concerns in Parliament. By shining a spotlight on their corporate vested interests, we?ve been able to shift the debate and hold back outrageous deals that benefit their corporate interests and put people last. We?re up against some of the biggest multinational corporations in the world, but together we have been able to block their attempts to lock in dodgy deals and shift power back to the people. We need to keep up the pressure! Can you make a donation to ensure our economic recovery looks after people and the climate, not big corporations? We are a step closer to achieving an economic recovery plan that looks after people, but there is still more work to be done. The NCCC remains a handpicked body of corporate executives, many of whom have strong links to the fossil fuel industry and the biggest polluting companies in the country. Nev Power is still the Chair of the NCCC and is on the board of a major gas company. And, there are still many questions about the potential conflicts of interest of other commissioners and a lack of transparency that the Prime Minister must address. Together we can stop huge subsidies for gas under the cover of the economic recovery, and pressure the Prime Minister to put those most vulnerable to the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic at the heart of its recovery plan. We?ve seen that together we can hold back the government's dirty gas plans, can you make a donation to support this ongoing work? Message-ID: <15A9AD5449DF4EDCBFA5F65FF598ACC5@lewpostnew> California's new bill could stop the next pandemic AND save endangered species from extinction! Sign Now Vladimir, Humankind's obsession with wildlife ? as food, as pets, as trophies mounted on walls ? is killing both us and them. For decades, scientists have warned that our increased interaction with wild animals comes with a very real risk for the transmission of zoonotic diseases ? diseases that come from animals ? like COVID-19. This disease has been devastating human populations around the world since the coronavirus likely became human-borne at a live animal market. But the devastation is not reserved for humans: exotic and endangered animal populations are plummeting as we seek to buy them as delicacies, like the highly endangered pangolin, or as prized pets, like a big cat forced to live in a cage and perform for human entertainment. And let's not forget trophy hunters ? their idea of fun is flying to different countries in order to kill a rare, often endangered animal and bring its body back as a souvenir. But amazingly, California is tackling all of these issues at once with Senate Bill 1175. This bill would totally ban the import of any wild animal that has a high risk of zoonotic disease transmission, protecting us from the next pandemic. But the bill would also ban the import of certain trophy-hunted species from Africa like lions, elephants, and rhinos. Take away the "trophies," often the heads, feet, horns, or hides of these animals, and the hunters suddenly have much less incentive to partake in the cruel sport. This common sense piece of legislation would go such a long way in protecting the earth's endangered species, critical biodiversity, and the health of humans.
