WHO: International spread of coronavirus could accelerate

The number of coronavirus cases detected so far outside of China could indicate the disease is more widespread than initially believed, and countries should prepare for the possibility that infection rates will speed up, says World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. A team of WHO experts has arrived in China to assist in containing and treating the coronavirus, which has infected more than 40,000 people worldwide.Full Story: HuffPost (2/10), Rappler (Philippines)/Agence France-Presse (2/10), Reuters (2/9)

A revised version of a United Nations Security Council resolution proposed by Palestine has dropped accusations that a peace plan for the Middle East prepared by the US violates international law, instead asserting that it departs from parameters set out in previous UN resolutions. The council is expected to vote on the resolution on Tuesday.Full Story: Channel NewsAsia (Singapore)/Agence France-Presse (2/10)

Progress is being made against the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a growing number of people are realizing the gravity of the situation, which allows medical workers to identify and treat cases of the disease earlier, says World Health Organization regional director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti. "We are cautiously optimistic that we are reaching the end of this Ebola outbreak," Moeti says, while cautioning that insecurity in the region could still hamper efforts.Full Story: Voice of America (2/9)

Less than one-third of the world's researchers are women, and women who pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics still struggle to obtain the same recognition, success and financial compensation as their male counterparts, says UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Global leaders must renew their commitment to closing the gender gap in scientific fields as the world prepares to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science this week, says International Seabed Authority Secretary-General Michael Lodge.Full Story: The Weather Channel (2/10), Japan Today (2/10)
