Guterres predicts long pandemic recovery at
UN summit

                                The successful development and distribution
of a vaccine will not automatically reverse the health, social and economic
damage the coronavirus has done, and the global community must work
cooperatively on recovery efforts, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres warned participants at a special meeting of the UN this week.
Guterres defended the World Health Organization's response to the crisis but
criticized countries that did not follow the agency's guidance.Full Story:

Pandemic hampers inclusion for people with
disabilities

                                People with long-term physical, mental,
intellectual or sensory disabilities face a greater threat from the
coronavirus, and efforts to include them in recovery plans and society in
general are in danger of being overlooked amid the pandemic, United Nations
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned in an address marking
International Day of Persons with Disabilities. "Realizing the rights of
persons with disabilities is crucial to fulfilling the core promise of the
2030 Agenda -- to leave no one behind," Guterres added.Full Story: Anadolu

UN chief reveals Lebanon plan as blast
victims protest

Lebanon urgently needs to form a government
free from partisan agendas to protect and support its people, many of whom
are still struggling to recover from an August explosion in the port of
Beirut, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said as he
announced a coordinated effort between the UN, the World Bank and the
European Union to support blast recovery efforts. At the same time, Beirut
residents disabled by the explosion protested the government's corruption
and a lack of support for victims.Full Story: Saudi Gazette (12/2), Arab

Lockdowns aimed at curbing the spread of the
coronavirus have increased the threats of domestic violence and sex

prosecute perpetrators, warns United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
Executive Director Ghada Waly. Men and boys must be engaged in campaigns
against gender-based violence and discrimination, say UN Population Fund

"Suicidal" war on nature must be stopped, UN
chief says

Humankind is waging a war against the
natural environment that is driving the collapse of biodiversity, the
extinction of millions of species and the destruction of ecosystems we need
to survive, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this week
in a virtual address at Columbia University. "Making peace with nature is
the defining task of the 21st century," Guterres said.Full Story: The

The United Nations has raised concern about
the safety and health of over 500,000 residents of the Tigrayan capital of
Mekele, where critical infrastructure has reportedly been damaged or
destroyed by fighting between Ethiopia and Tigray rebels, as well as
Eritrean refugees living in Tigray camps, which remain inaccessible. Over
45,000 Ethiopians -- close to half of whom are children -- have fled the
violence into Sudan, where they are at high risk of being trafficked, aid
agencies warn.Full Story: The Associated Press (12/3), Reuters (12/4),
