recovery begins

                                Over 170,000 residential apartments, 120
schools, six hospitals and more than 20 medical clinics were damaged in the
deadly port explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, last week, the United Nations
reports. The UN High Commission for Refugees and UNICEF are providing aid to
survivors, while the World Food Programme is providing grain to replace

US push to extend Iran sanctions put to UNSC
vote

Members of the United Nations Security
Council are voting on a revised resolution proposed by the US to extend a
13-year-old arms embargo against Iran that is due to expire in October.
Russia and China have both threatened to veto the move, but the US says if
the resolution fails, it will trigger a procedure to reimpose sanctions
previously lifted by the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.Full Story: Reuters (8/13),

WHO: Unity in vaccine distribution key to
ending pandemic

                                Nationalistic efforts to secure a
coronavirus vaccine by wealthy countries will hamper global development and
distribution efforts, and countries must work in solidarity to end the
pandemic, says World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus. A vaccine is not a "magic bullet" and countries must persist
with quarantines, contact tracing and social distancing measures, says
Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.Full Story: CNBC (8/13),

The response to a growing Ebola outbreak in
