1999 treaty banning child labor earns
unanimous support
The International Labour Organization this
week welcomed a decision from Tonga to ratify a convention aimed at
protecting children from forced labor, sexual exploitation and armed
conflict -- making the treaty the first in the agency's history to be
ratified by all 187 member states. The ILO notes that although the number of
child workers has decreased over the last two decades, progress could be
undone by the pandemic.Full Story: Deccan Herald (India)/Agence

Pandemic could prompt a crisis in education
Pandemic-related school closures have
affected 1 billion students around the world and increased the likelihood of
around 23.8 million dropping out of school without completing their
education, a UNESCO report warns. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres is urging world leaders to reopen schools as soon as it is safe,
prioritize funding for education as well as digital literacy and
infrastructure, and develop initiatives to support at-risk students.Full

Hundreds of women, girls missing in Peru
amid lockdowns
Rights activists in Peru are calling on
leaders to create a national registry of missing persons, citing data from
the country's Ministry of Women that 1,200 women and girls have been
reported missing in the last four months. The United Nations has noted that
pandemic-related lockdowns increase the risk of domestic violence and urged
governments to take action against it.Full Story: Thomson Reuters Foundation

Study: UN's carbon scenario should not be
dismissed
A scenario known as representative
concentration pathway 8.5 and outlined by United Nations climate experts
that predicts a five-degree increase in global temperatures by 2100 is
consistent with actions announced by governments up to 2050 and should serve
as a warning to the world, a US study concludes. "RCP8.5 is characterized as
extreme, alarmist, and 'misleading,' with some commentators going so far as
to dismiss any study using RCP8.5," says study author Christopher
Schwalm.Full Story: Climate Home News (8/3)

CTED chief warns female IS recruits are
underestimated
Female Islamic State militants are often
mischaracterized as victims and underestimated due to security forces'
gender bias, warns Michele Coninsx, Executive Director of the United Nations
Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate. "While women are often active as
online propagandists and recruiters, their involvement in other types of
activities, including violence, was less prominently documented online
because of ISIS's restrictive gender norms," Coninsx notes in a report.Full
