Beautiful rainforests from the Amazon to Indonesia are once more being set ablaze to feed greedy corporations' demand for cheap soy and palm oil. It's up to you and me to force Nestl?, Unilever, and other powerful multinationals to stick to their anti-deforestation promises -- before it's too late. Add your name: Demand the makers of Kitkat and Dove take urgent action to stop our rainforests from burning! Sign the petition As you read this, thick smoke is rising from forests in Brazil, Indonesia and Malaysia, poisoning the air and driving people and animals from their homes. Majestic tall trees that give shelter to orangutans, sloths, rhinos and other rare species are burning to the ground, to be replaced by endless vast soy and oil palm monocultures. It wasn't supposed to be this way. Nestl?, Unilever, Mondelez, Procter & Gamble and other powerful corporations all promised that by 2020, they'd stop sourcing palm oil from producers that destroyed rainforests. But the lure of easy profits won out -- and now, our forests are bearing the consequences. We can't let them get away with this. We need to ramp up the pressure on their bosses until every single gram of soy and drop of palm oil in the products they sell is sourced responsibly. Every name on this petition will serve as a reminder to these corporations that empty promises won't save our vanishing rainforests -- it's time for real, meaningful action. Sign the urgent petition: Tell Nestl? and other powerful multinationals to stop our rainforests from burning! It's been a full decade since Nestl? and the other companies in the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) -- a corporate alliance whose members produce the food and household goods millions of people use every day -- committed to end deforestation in their supply chains. Now it's 2020, the moment of truth, and many CGF corporations, including Nestl?, have admitted they won't be meeting their anti-deforestation goals. From soy-fattened beef and chicken to the palm oil in ice cream and shampoo, too many of the products filling our fridges and cabinets are still tainted with burning rainforests. Meanwhile, the 2020 fire season is already beginning -- and some experts are saying this year's Amazon fires could be worse than the inferno that devastated one of our planet's most precious ecosystems last summer. The clock is ticking! Demand Nestl? and co. take urgent action to stop our rainforests from burning. Without enough public pressure on Nestl? and co., these greedy profit hoarders will simply keep making empty promises while pushing our forests to the point of no return. That's why we've joined a powerful coalition to hammer our message home -- and we're asking you to join us, just like when thousands of you successfully pressured Pepsi into radically overhauling its palm oil sourcing policy. Together we can put out the fires, keep animals safe and stop corporations from trashing our planet and climate -- but only if we act fast. Demand Nestl? and co. take urgent action to stop our rainforests from burning. Nestl? is packing up shop and is quitting the bottled water industry in Canada -- and there's a strong chance they could be about to do the same in the U.S. and China! Last month, Nestl? said that it is considering selling its water brands in North America in 2021 because it?s not worth doing business there. Three weeks later, Nestl? sold all its operations in Canada. And then just last week, Nestl? said it might drop its brands in China as well. And why is Nestl? quitting the water business worldwide? Because SumOfUs members like you never gave up the fight against Nestl? all over the world -- chipping in to its profits by increasing its lawyer fees, preventing its permits from being approved and creating an ever-growing public relations nightmare. Our fight against Nestl?, and other water companies profiting off bottled water, will continue until they are banned world wide. But before we go back to fighting Nestl? to make sure it stops sucking the world's water dry, we wanted to take a step back to celebrate some of the incredible work you?ve done against Nestl? in the past 5 years -- leading to them exit the Canadian market. Here is a snapshot of some of the biggest moments against Nestl? in Canada where it sold its operations, in the USA where you supported local groups in Michigan, Oregon, Florida, and California, and in France where you helped win a huge victory for the town of Vittel. Canada We were able to get Nestl? to sell its operations in Canada because we hit the water giant time and time again at its biggest operations in British Columbia and Ontario. In one of our biggest Canadian petitions ever -- we had a win against Nestl? and other industrial water users hours before delivering your message with a giant mobile billboard. Because of your support, we got the government of British Columbia to agree to revisit the amount of money that Nestl? and other water users pay in the province. In this campaign, we exposed that Nestl? paid only two dollars and twenty five cents for 100 million litres of water, which created a lasting PR nightmare for the company. Celebrating with a giant billboard post petition delivery in Langley BC Meanwhile, in Ontario, you stopped Nestl? from getting a new permit that would allow it to pump 1.6 million litres a day from a community that would be relying on that water for drinking, washing and cooking and made Nestl??s greed for our public water a political issue. It's no wonder why Nestl? sold its operations in Canada -- you fought against them every step of the way. USA Nestl? is also likely going to leave the US market because you fought back against them in Oregon, Michigan, Florida, and California. Perhaps our biggest win against Nestl? in the US was in Oregon -- when SumOfUs members like you stopped Nestl??s plans to pump fresh water out of Cascade Locks, Oregon to bottle and sell for massive profits. You supported local activists who fought Nestl?'s plan for nine years leading to this massive win in Oregon. SumOfUs members also made a difference in the battle between Nestl? and Michigan. When Nestl? tried to sue a tiny township government in Michigan, you showed up chipping in over $50,000 US, preventing Osceola Township from declaring bankruptcy, all for issuing a permit rejecting the bottled water giant from taking more water from its watershed. The best part -- Osceola won their lawsuit! We also participated in a floating protest to stop Nestl? from bottling nearly two billion litres a year from the fragile Ginnie Springs in Florida shortly after we delivered a petition of 350,000 names to regional water officials -- and that put the brakes on Nestl??s water grab. Floating protest in Santa Fe, Florida hours after we delivered our petition to local government officials. In California, SumOfUs members have been a thorn in Nestl?'s side. We've called on the US Forest Service and then the California Water Board to stop the water bottled giant from sucking the state dry, and will continue our pressure until bottled water companies leave the Golden State. France When we found out that Nestl? was sucking 800 million liters of water each year from the small town of Vittel, France -- we fought back. Thanks to SumOfUs members like you who signed petitions, flooded consultations and showed up to protest in Vittel, the locals won their first battle against Nestl?. Last year the local government cancelled plans for a water pipeline project that would have forced the townspeople to pay as much as ?30 million to let Nestl? drain all their water away. SumOfUs in front of Nestl? bottling plant for World Water Day in 2019 in Vittel, France. --- Though Nestl? is leaving Canada and it seems it will leave the US and China, the fight against corporations draining water to sell for huge profits continues. In Canada, we need to continue to fight against the new owners of Nestl??s operations until we can ban bottled water companies in the country for good. In the US, we need to work hard to make sure that Nestl? does follow Canada?s lead, and continue to support our partners in Michigan, California, Maine, and Florida to enact anti-water theft bills like in the State of Washington to ensure that Nestl?, or any other bottled water corporations, stop draining local aquifers to sell for massive profits. And in France, China, Australia, and all over the world -- we need to continue our fight against Nestl? and other water companies continues to suck water to sell for massive profits. We are a small team pitted against a multi billion dollar bottled water industry. And we have been able to fight back against Nestle time and time again all because of members like you chipped in with monthly donations. Thank you for your continued support. Naturally, that infuriated Donald Trump. So he took a massive wrecking ball to the law. Under his new, stripped-down version, corporations will no longer need to consider a project's contribution to climate change. And people who live near proposed sites will have virtually zero chance for input. This is an egregious attempt to take away the rights of the people and expand the already massive power and wealth of the fossil fuel and construction industries, and at a particularly horrible time. Climate change is already a global emergency, with scientists agreeing that if we have not taken enough steps by 2030 to curb the climb of the world's temperatures, we will be past the point of no return. NEPA was already insufficient for the task at hand, and now we don't even have its meager protections. Sign the petition and demand that the Trump Administration restore NEPA to the way it was meant to be, before it's too late for the planet and our people! Thank you for all that you do, Miranda B. Please help! Sign Now Brexit has been one of the most tumultuous and divisive events of the decade. The resulting chaos and uncertainty are not only taking a toll on UK and EU citizens. An unexpected and shocking casualty? Dolphins. As European fishermen prepared for the UK to exit the EU's fishing regulations, their presence in the English Channel reached an all-time high. But the high volume of fishing vessels, or trawlers, has killed dolphins in unprecedented numbers. Dolphins get caught in fishing lines and nets run by trawlers. Unable to surface for breath, the curious, compassionate animals drown and are only discovered once the crews pull up the nets to collect their haul. The crews, without a second thought, throw the lifeless bodies back into the water, which then wash ashore and are picked at by seagulls. These dolphins are dying painfully and needlessly! We must protect them. Sign the petition and tell the EU to regulate trawlers and decrease the number allowed to operate! Thank you, Kelsey B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. For the past three weeks Russians in the city of Khabarovsk in the Far East have protested the firing and imprisonment of their democratically elected governor. At first the protests called for the reinstatement of Governor Sergei Furgal but have changed their focus to anti-Putin and pro-democracy. b.. Governor Furgal was flown to Moscow where he was arrested and accused of crimes from 2004 and 2005. Immediately after his arrest, thousands of protesters took to the street to show their support for the popular opposition figure. Why is it important? a.. This is indicative of how Vladimir Putin and his cronies in Moscow will act in the upcoming regional legislature elections in September and next year?s parliamentary election. They have been accused of barring opposition candidates and otherwise rigging the election. b.. Despite COVID-19, mass protests continue to be important as people around the world look for leadership, good governance, and fundamental human rights. NPR has a set of recommendations for how to safely protest during a pandemic. c.. The Kremlin chose the replacement governor from the same opposition party as Furgal in an attempt to persuade people to stop protesting. d.. This all comes only weeks after Putin?s national referendum to make himself ?President for life?. According to a poll from last week, public confidence in Putin has plummeted to 23 percent, the lowest ever recorded and about a third of Russians say they would take part in similar protests in their own regions. A recent poll conducted by the Knight Foundation and Gallup found that Americans have lost confidence in the media?s ability to report without bias. A majority of respondents reported experiencing ?a great deal? of political bias in the news. b.. The poll also found that local news continues to play a crucial role in civic engagement. People who follow local news are more likely to vote in local elections and often feel more attached to their communities. Why is it important? a.. The results of this poll are important in the context of democracy, especially three months before a critical Presidential election. The media should provide citizens with the objective information they need to form their own opinions but this cannot happen if people think news outlets are biased. b.. The poll also noted that Americans? perception of the news is largely formed from their political party affiliation. This form of identity politics stems from deep political divisions and threatens the democratic process. c.. Most Americans also blame the news for creating political division but they also believe that the media can play a role in bridging the gap. What can you do? a.. Over 100,000 SumOfUs members like you called on insurance companies to stop fuelling climate chaos and underwriting destructive projects like the Trans Mountain pipeline. And Zurich, Trans Mountain?s biggest insurer, listened! The Trans Mountain pipeline operators say there?s still plenty of insurers, after Zurich just cut ties. But we know who their new biggest insurer is: Chubb. Email Chubb executives and call on them to stop insuring the dangerous Trans Mountain pipeline. Unfortunately for our planet, right before the COVID-19 crisis hit, the Canadian courts greenlit the Trans Mountain pipeline ? a reckless project that would increase tanker traffic through the Salish Sea by seven hundred percent, endangering the already struggling resident Orca whale population. The government is adamant about pushing this disastrous project though which is why insurance companies hold the key to stopping this pipeline. If the pipeline can?t get corporations to pay for cleaning up its spills, it can?t operate. Days before we were going to deliver your massive petition to the headquarters of Zurich, the company agreed to not renew insurance for this climate bomb. So now, with less than a month before the insurance expires, we have to push the remaining insurers to follow suit and end the Trans Mountain pipeline once and for all. Email the executives at Chubb insurance today to stop the Trans Mountain pipeline. SumOfUs has forced financial institutions to pull out of dangerous pipelines before. When over 360,000 members like you signed a petition calling on major banks to pull the plug on the Dakota Access pipeline during the heart of the Standing Rock protests, the largest bank in Norway decided to pull funding the day after we brought your names to their headquarters. And just two weeks ago, the US courts forced the Dakota Access pipeline to drain all its oil and stop operating. Activists were able to stop the Dakota Access pipeline because we took action over and over. And together, we can stop the Trans Mountain pipeline too, but only if we keep the pressure on. Please take action now. But Bayer-Monsanto lobbyists are pushing the Commission to say "NO" to defend their profits. Let's tell the Commission to put our health first and uphold the right to ban harmful pesticides. Take action Hi, Last year, Austria was the first EU country to vote to ban glyphosate, and after a few delays it's nearly about to adopt its ban! [1] But there's one major hurdle before the glyphosate ban is enacted: the European Commission has to give its approval for Austria?s glyphosate ban. And Bayer-Monsanto is trying to stop it with expensive lobbyists. [2] Bayer-Monsanto wants to stop Austria?s ban at any cost, because it knows that once EU countries show that it?s possible to ban the substance, others will follow like dominoes. Harmful synthetic pesticides are a cash cow for agribusiness, so they?re going to try to defend them with everything they?ve got. That?s why we have to bring everything we have, too! The Commission has the power to decide the ban?s fate, so we need to counter Bayer-Monsanto?s lobbyists with a massive show of people-power. If we show the Commission that Europeans are watching their decision with a massive petition, they?ll see a groundswell of support from all over Europe that they won?t be able to ignore. Let's prove that our people power is stronger than the corporate lobby ? will you sign? Counter Bayer-Monsanto's lobbyists: Sign the petition The European Commission has always said that EU countries can ban glyphosate within their own borders. [3] But, of course, Bayer-Monsanto doesn?t care: they?ve even come out publicly saying that they expect the European Commission to strike down Austria?s ban on glyphosate. [4] The pesticide industry maintains that glyphosate is safe, but scientific evidence of glyphosate?s carcinogenic effect is increasing. A review of existing studies from the University of Washington found that exposure to glyphosate increases the risk of cancer by 41 percent. [5] They noted that a ?compelling link? exists between exposure to glyphosate and one type of blood cancer. Now, more EU countries are talking about glyphosate bans and restrictions: Luxembourg will completely phase-out glyphosate by the end of this year, and even Germany has committed to phase-out glyphosate by the end of 2023! [6] Together we can convince the Commission to allow for a ban on glyphosate in Austria, setting the conditions for more countries to do the same. And all we need to do is remind the EU Commission of their own words! Defend our health and the environment: Sign the petition We?ve been fighting against the likes of Bayer-Monsanto for years ? and we?ve made a difference. In 2017 we launched an official European Citizens? Initiative (ECI) which gathered over 1 million signatures in favour of banning glyphosate. And as a direct response to our ECI, the EU changed the law so that formerly secret industry safety studies must be shown to the public! [7] Together we?ve proven that our people-power is stronger than the corporate lobby. Austria?s historic ban could finally prove to be the catalyst that influences all of Europe to remove glyphosate from our food supply. Let?s keep up the pressure and tell the EU Commission to resist Bayer-Monsanto?s lobbyists and respect all EU countries? rights to ban harmful pesticides. With determination, David (London), Giulio (Rome), Marta (Warsaw), and the entire WeMove Europe team PS: In the second quarter of this year, Bayer-Monsanto made a net loss of almost ?10 billion due to its multibillion dollar settlement with US plaintiffs alleging that Bayer-Monsanto's glyphosate herbicides cause cancer. [8] And just last month, a California appeals court rejected Bayer-Monsanto?s attempt to overturn a verdict requiring Bayer-Monsanto to compensate the plaintiff tens of millions of dollars. [9] The facts, science, pressure, and law is closing in on glyphosate - now it's time we do our part. Please sign now. These come on the heels of yet another tragic anniversary: The first atomic bomb test, called ?Trinity?, was conducted in south central New Mexico on July 16, 1945. Together, these events plunged the world into a nuclear era that has cost untold lives and caused incalculable environmental harm. The anniversary of the Trinity test reminds us that, however much damage and suffering nuclear technology causes abroad, its first victims are always communities (usually indigenous people of color) here at home. Those communities are still living with the consequences of Trinity and over 200 similar nuclear weapons tests?and they haven?t been fully recognized or compensated yet for their decades of pain and suffering. In 1990, Congress passed a law meant to compensate victims of atomic bomb testing, but it doesn?t go nearly far enough and will expire in 2022. A bill in the House of Representatives?H.R.3783, the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act Amendments of 2019?would expand compensation more fully to those affected by the tests. But Rep. Jerrold Nadler, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, hasn?t even scheduled a hearing for the bill yet. The communities that live downwind from nuclear test sites (?Downwinders?) really need our help right now. Your member of Congress can have a lot of influence over whether this bill gets a hearing in the House. Tell your member of Congress to ask Jerrold Nadler and Rep. Jim Jordan (the committee?s Republican ranking member) to schedule a hearing for this bill. The current law compensates residents in parts of Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Arizona who were Downwinders from the Nevada Test Site, but it expires in two years. The new law would extend this compensation to Downwinders in New Mexico, parts of Idaho, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands, and to uranium workers who joined the industry after 1971. It would also extend the compensation fund to 2045. Compensating the Downwinders is especially important now that we?re in the middle of a pandemic. Because of their exposure to radiation from nuclear tests, Downwinders suffer from more preexisting conditions and are more immunocompromised than average Americans. This makes them more vulnerable to the effects of Covid-19 than other populations. The Downwinders are the first victims of America?s embrace of nuclear power. They should be compensated fairly for their pain and suffering. Tell your member of Congress to ask Rep. Nadler and Rep. Jordan to schedule a hearing for this bill. You can also ask your member of Congress to become co-sponsors to the bills that have bipartisan support. This week we mourn the victims of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the Trinity test. But we can do more than just mourn. We can start setting things right. Compensating the Downwinders is the first step in the right direction. Now, with huge areas of the capital levelled, it?s impossible to overstate the country?s need. When the blasts hit, 300,000 people became homeless in an instant. Hunger was already stalking the land, and vital food reserves were lost. Doctors are being forced to operate by the light of mobile phones and Lebanon's people are describing themselves as refugees in their own country. We HAVE to help -- and we can. Avaaz is already in touch with a few nimble groups on the ground who can provide urgent food, medical assistance and shelter. If enough of us chip in, we can help fund this lifesaving work, giving away every penny we raise! Donate now -- let's show Lebanon's resilient people the world won?t turn away in their darkest hour: I'LL DONATE ?4 I'LL DONATE ?7 I'LL DONATE ?14 OTHER AMOUNT Lebanon has been buckling under the pressure of Covid, the war in Syria, bitter political sectarianism, and a crippling financial crisis. The explosions this week could be the straw that breaks the camel's back, sending the country spiralling into collapse. Last time that happened, it unleashed a civil war that lasted fifteen years and killed tens of thousands. Beirut, and citizens across Lebanon, still bear the scars of that horror -- we must do all we can to stop it from happening again. The best way to do that is to show Lebanon?s people that the world won?t abandon them. If we all chip in just a bit, we?ll be able to fund groups: a.. Providing shelter for hundreds of thousands made homeless by the blasts; b.. Ensuring hungry families have food; c.. Delivering urgent medical care in the pandemic; d.. Supporting Syrian refugees who are now trapped in a new crisis. Avaaz has a team on the ground in Lebanon identifying the most impactful groups to fund. They?re ready to go -- so chip in now to provide urgent help to Lebanon?s people, before it?s too late: I'LL DONATE ?4 I'LL DONATE ?7 I'LL DONATE ?14 OTHER AMOUNT Our movement has shown up time and time again for people trapped in humanitarian crises. But Lebanon is facing multiple crises at once. First the war in neighbouring Syria, then millions of refugees, the Covid crisis, the financial collapse, and now the giant blasts in the capital. Let?s meet this moment of despair with generosity and hope, and do all we can to help. With hope, Bert, Wissam, Mike, Marigona, Mo, and the rest of the Avaaz team PS - This might be your first donation to our movement ever. But what a first donation! As the world's largest wood buyer, Ikea must do better. Add your name to push the company into forest-saving action! Sign the petition Have you heard about Ikea's latest scandal? A new investigation shows the Swedish furniture giant's relentless demand for cheap wood is destroying the habitat of lynx and brown bears. Some of Ikea's best-selling chairs have been traced to illegal logging in Ukraine's ancient Carpathian forest, one of the last sanctuaries for these and other endangered species. Ikea responded by promising to investigate the timber companies responsible. But you and I both know that's not enough. The problem isn't with a single supplier -- it's with Ikea's never-ending pursuit of fast furniture at the expense of our planet and climate. Until it radically overhauls its wood sourcing policy, forests in Ukraine and beyond will never be truly safe. That's why you and I need to seize this moment to force Ikea into action. Add your name: Tell Ikea cheap chairs aren't worth the destruction of our forests! Ikea is the biggest wood consumer in the world, tearing through our forests at the rate of one tree per second -- and growing. Its impact on the planet is so huge, it can even be seen from space. Yet it exerts little oversight over its timber empire, which stretches far beyond Sweden to Russia and eastern Europe. Instead, it relies on certifiers from the international Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to slap a "sustainable" label on the wood it uses. It?s not sustainable -- it?s rampant corporate greed. In the short term, Ikea must conduct an independent investigation of all of its timber suppliers in high-risk countries such as Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, and demand reform of the FSC to ensure its certified wood truly is sustainable. In the long term, it must set ambitious targets for phasing out wood from natural forests -- and eventually, for eliminating the use of virgin wood altogether. How far this notorious profit hoarder is willing to go depends on how much public pressure we can put on it. And that depends on you, Vladimir. Tell Ikea to stop supporting deforestation! I know I can count on SumOfUs members like you to defend our forests from profit-hungry corporations. Just recently, after months of ongoing pressure, you forced Pepsi to overhaul its palm oil sourcing policy and prevent rainforests from being destroyed for Doritos and other snacks. Hundreds of thousands of you helped start a shareholder revolution at Yum! Brands -- owner of Pizza Hut and KFC -- when its bosses failed to take deforestation seriously. Now you and I have the opportunity to tackle the destruction happening in our own backyard. With your help, Ikea will finally see the forest for the trees -- and put animals, people and our planet over its furniture profits. Message-ID: <3DE846CD6B924F75A580693D2F626C23@evol.sp.ru> It's time for the U.S. to finally pay reparations to the descendants of enslaved people who literally built this country Sign Now In the wake of the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, many white Americans have been asking: "What can we do to help?" While we've heard many examples of what we as individuals can ? and should ? be doing, there is also a step we need to demand our government take. And that's reparations. If you need a visual to help drive the point home, look at some of the most symbolic buildings in this country. The U.S. Capitol Building. The White House. The original White House, before it was burnt down in 1812. Wall Street. Each one of these momentous constructions ? as well as countless other hallowed halls, our economy, and even our global industrial might ? were built by the labor of enslaved peoples. In exchange, what did the U.S. provide? Underfunded and overcrowded schools, still plagued by class and racial segregation. Devastating inequality and poverty. A constant onslaught of violence from police. Soaring levels of incarceration. Comparing economic measures to their white counterparts, Black Americans are worse off almost completely across the board. This country took nearly everything away from enslaved people ??? their freedom, their wealth, their labor, their families, their lives. We can't take back our history, but we can take steps to make the future less grim. Sign the petition to tell the U.S. Congress to fund reparations for African Americans, and commission research into how best to implement this policy! Thank you for all that you do, Miranda B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Reparations are not a pipe-dream. Cities like Asheville, North Carolina are already taking steps to turn this moral necessity into a reality. These come on the heels of yet another tragic anniversary: The first atomic bomb test, called ?Trinity?, was conducted in south central New Mexico on July 16, 1945. The communities affected by this test are still living with the consequences of Trinity and over 200 similar nuclear weapons tests?and they haven?t been fully recognized or compensated yet for their decades of pain and suffering. Locked inside a ship that had overturned, their thick coats became waterlogged as the water crashed in from all sides. As they slowly drowned, they screamed for help, their legs dangling from their now-toppled enclosures. This was the fate that recently befell nearly 15,000 sheep, en route from Romania to Saudia Arabia. Their original end destination: the slaughterhouse. While not all of the sheep drowned, the story doesn't get happier. Rescue crews managed to "save" 32 of the animals, or approximately 0.002% of the herd ? only to send them straight to slaughter anyway. Other countries and regions are banning these types of exports due to the extreme inhumanity of it all. Australia briefly banned live animal exports to the Middle East after a video that showed sheep dying agonizing deaths due to extreme heat aboard ships. Sign Now Vladimir, Most electronic devices like phones and computers are built to only last about 2-4 years, even though they could last longer. This is all so we will be forced to buy the newer model. But where do all those old, outdated devices go? Because of inconsistent legislation, a lack of research into e-waste recycling, and of course the laziness and greed of those in power, much of the world's e-waste is shipped off to developing countries. There, the workers responsible for handling the dangerous chemicals in electronics are often children who are not only severely underpaid and exploited ? they and their communities are being poisoned by our trash! Sign the petition today to urge Congress to pass the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act (RERA) without delay! The U.S. created 59 million tons of e-waste in 2019 alone and since there is no federal law prohibiting this, most of it was sent to developing countries. The toxic materials from our electronics are getting into kids' systems and resulting in kidney and brain damage, high fevers and muscle pain. But the toxins are also seeping into groundwater where they poison plants and animals and whole communities who rely on the water. Sign Now When the temperatures are soaring in the summer months, there is a sneaky danger hiding in plain sight: cars. While the temperature outside a car could be high, but not dangerously so, the inside of a car without ventilation can reach scorching and deadly temperatures extremely fast. Tragically, every year, people leave their children and animals in these cars to run into a store "real quick" and return to find a very sick or even dead child or pet. It's almost unspeakable. But there is a solution. Sign now to demand that Congress pass the Hot Cars Act of 2019 to keep children and animals alike safe! Sadly, this problem may be worse in 2020 than any other year, both because the coronavirus is extending shopping time to accommodate crucial social distancing rules, and because climate change continues to make our summers ever hotter. Most people who leave a child or animal in a car without air conditioning do not realize just how quickly the car will become deadly, even with the windows cracked open. That's why this act would require every single new car to have built-in technology to detect the presence of an animal or child in a car that's turned off. This would save lives by alerting unwitting people if they've accidentally left an animal or child in a car with unsafe temperatures. Sign on to show support. Thank you, Kelsey B. On top of out-of-control mining and slash-and-burn agriculture on their ancestral lands, now a mega-logging company wants to clear-cut hundreds of acres of Amazon rainforest to make a quick buck. There's only one way the Tupinamba can stop this -- if they can file a legal claim to their land with the federal government. That means they'll be traveling across their territory, painstakingly marking the borders of their land, kilometer by kilometer -- the only way they can ensure their land has a chance at being protected. But to do it they need to raise funds urgently to pay for provisions, GPS equipment, boats to make the weeks-long journey along their borders and campaigning to protect ancestral lands. However, the pro-corporate, right-wing administration of Jair Bolsonaro has declared an all-out assault on Indigenous land rights in the Amazon, and logging, mining, and destructive agriculture have run rampant as a result. Faced with this challenge, the Tupinamba people are taking the protection of their land into their own hands. They're heading out deep into the forest to mark out their territory and lay claim to the land with the federal government. This is time-consuming, tedious, and very expensive work -- but you can help make it possible, Vladimir. Sign Now Apple, Samsung, Huawei are among just a few companies that are phasing out non-essential plastic in electronics and mobile phones in favor of bioplastics and recyclable materials like paper and cardboard. Yet, the electronics industry is still responsible for a massive amount of waste ? especially because it is so hard and expensive to repair our electronic goods in order to keep using them. That's because these corporations' business model is simple: keep us buying more (and newer) products. But as we buy new, instead of repairing the old, landfills are filling up with this e-waste. In 2019, the U.S. created a massive 59 million tons of e-waste, much of which was then shipped to developing countries, making people sick and poisoning local plant and animal life. But massive tech companies have the power to make their products last longer and make repairing them easier so that fewer overall are going to landfills. If the permanent site is not built, the ?interim? sites could become de-facto permanent storage sites. Communities in New Mexico and Texas would become the latest sacrifice to the nuclear industry. We still have time to flood the NRC with comments opposing this dangerous scheme, but the deadlines for comments are coming soon. Tell the NRC and your member of Congress to say NO to the CIS facilities in New Mexico and Texas and ask your Congressmember to call on NRC to hold in-person public meetings in your state when it's safe to do so. Hauling nuclear waste is extremely dangerous and risky. To reduce risk, the waste should be transported only once, from the reactor site (the site of creation) to a permanent isolation facility. Shipping high-level waste could potentially create a national disaster. Land, water, and air for miles around the accident site could be threatened by dangerous, possibly uninhabitable, levels of contamination. In addition, the NRC is short-circuiting the democratic process on these decisions by rushing to hold poorly-run conference calls during the pandemic. Instead, the NRC should wait until after the pandemic and hold proper public meetings. Tell the NRC and your member of Congress to say NO to the CIS facilities in New Mexico and Texas, and to call for an extension of the comment periods and public in-person meetings. By taking this action, you?ll send comments to the NRC opposing the CIS facilities in New Mexico and Texas. You?ll also send a letter to your member of Congress urging them to take these actions: a.. Oppose pending bills that legalize CIS facilities b.. Extend the NRC comment periods until 6 months after the end of the pandemic c.. And hold public hearings in your district about this. Building the CIS facilities in New Mexico and Texas would mean transporting over 90% of the radioactivity in the whole nuclear power and weapons fuel chain across 44 states and the District of Columbia for 40 years. That is an unacceptable risk to take with the health and lives of the American people. Tell the NRC and your member of Congress to say NO to the CIS facilities in New Mexico and Texas. It aims to increase the capacity of developing countries to reduce their emissions and enhance their ability to adapt to climate breakdown. Will you help us keep fossil fuel funders away from the Green Climate Fund? Sign to support our letter to the GCF Board Given Sumitomo?s track record of supporting dirty energy projects, we believe that they should be denied accreditation. Fossil fuel funders are the very reason for the continued reliance on coal, oil and gas in many countries. These investments continue to not only harm local communities and ecosystems but also intensify the climate crisis. We need your help to tell the Green Climate Fund Board that coal funders cannot be legitimate partners in implementing climate projects in the developing world. There is no justification for Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation to be considered a partner in spending public funds that are critically needed for climate action. This event is open to a large group of people and the date will be determined and coordinated with Doug and the ticket holders. Poet Richard Sadock will also be reading his poetry. Doug says this about how he found poetry: "I was first introduced to the idea of political poetry on October 18, 1970, about midnight, in an all-night Harvard Square corner bookstore. A few months before that encounter I had returned from the war in Viet Nam. To say that I was confused and angry is an understatement. I was also somewhat lost. Then on that fateful night I found this wonderful collection of poems by Denise Levertov that captured her journey to North Viet Nam as a peace activist. This was the first serious ?discussion? I had read from and about ?my? war. And true to what Robert Bly considers effective political poetry, Levertov used the personal to open up the universal. I was captured, and unlike my response to military ?service,? I did not want to escape. Instead, I sought out more of her work and other poets and, eventually, began to write my own poems." And, the Filipino dog meat trade is still active in the north. Pet dogs are stolen from peoples' houses and stray dogs are taken from the streets. Because most of the pups are not vaccinated, stolen pets and strays are being transported together, which poses serious health threats for the spread of diseases such as rabies, cholera and trichinellosis. Such risk also severely compromises the Philippines' commitment to eradicating rabies by the year 2020. The treatment of dogs and cats in the Philippines has notoriously been very cruel and corrupt, which casts a negative light on the Philippines' positive reputation as nation of beauty and kindness. Sign Now Vladimir, Birdcalls in the morning are becoming quieter. As the sun rises, these chipper friends often rise too, welcoming the start of the day. But now, our morning singers are at risk of disappearing completely ? and it's thanks to Trump's Environmental "Protection" Agency (EPA). Determined to protect profits above everything else, the EPA has rolled back restrictions on pesticides that are so toxic, they're actually illegal in many parts of the world. Farmers are particularly fond of neonicotinoids, which have been linked to massive bee population loss, and they're also taking a toll on our avian friends. They apply poisonous neonicotinoids to their crops by treating the seeds before planting ? meaning that birds eating these seeds are immediately exposed to the deadly toxins. Even when the seeds have become a full-grown plant, the noxious chemicals remain in every part of the crop, ready to kill future animals. In one U.S. county where eonicotinoids were used, bird populations dropped by more than 2% compared to other areas where safer pesticides were used. The U.S. and Canadian bird populations combined have plummeted by almost 30% in the past 50 years. But because these toxins have long, lasting effects on bird populations like owls, sparrows, and meadowlarks, we likely won't know the true magnitude of the devastation for years. Message-ID: <73BB17F8E1FD4048B9B16BBAD6D75941@evol.sp.ru> Trump has put elephants and lions back on the kill list. Urge the U.S. Congress to uphold the ban on trophy hunt imports! Sign Now Vladimir, Near the turn of the 20th century, Africa was home to approximately four million elephants. Now fewer than 500,000 remain. Africa's lions have seen similar declines, with populations plummeting by 42 percent in just the last 20 years. To save these iconic animals from extinction, the Obama administration banned the importation of some elephant trophies and made importing lion pelts and other trophies more difficult. But now Donald Trump has reversed this policy, allowing lion trophies to be imported into the country once again. This isn't the least bit surprising. President Trump's sons have boasted publicly of killing rare animals in Africa, and on top of that, Trump hates all things Obama. In September 2019, his administration approved the first importation of a lion trophy since 2016, when lions became protected under the Endangered Species Act. He's also said that the Fish and Wildlife Service will now allow trophy imports of dead elephants and lions on a "case-by-case" basis. This essentially removes the ban, and will inevitably increase elephant poaching. We need Congress to introduce legislation to reverse this dangerous decision. Will you join the more than 500,000 signers who are demanding that Congress reinstate a total ban on all trophy hunting imports? Thank you, Lauren W. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Trump's decision to allow trophy hunt imports on a "case by case basis" is practically a thumbs-up approving trophy hunting. Sign Now It's a pet owner's worse nightmare: your pet is kidnapped ? and then murdered and eaten. It sounds too horrific to be true, but that's exactly what is happening in Vietnam. In a break from historical precedent, Vietnam has a growing number of pet owners who have dogs and cats as companions, and not for consumption. These pet owners live in constant fear of having their companion stolen by local dog or cat thieves, whose sole mission is to sell their pet to a butcher for quick cash. The lack of animal cruelty laws in Vietnam has led to human lives being lost as dog thieves attack pet owners, resulting in pet owners retaliating, causing loss of life on both sides. Police are limited in serving justice because of the lack of animal cruelty laws. Countless serious health outbreaks of disease and illness have also been attributed to Vietnam's dog and cat meat trade, resulting in many deaths. Life-threatening illnesses such as rabies, cholera and trichinellosis remain a constant danger to local residents and international tourists. Such risk also severely compromises Vietnam's commitment to eradicate rabies by the year 2020. But we can't give up yet. Dogs and cats are companion animals and not food items. Will you help by asking the President of Vietnam to protect animals and, by extension, humans? Thank you, Kelsey B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. Let's bring our voices together on social media to remind the GCF Board that coal funders cannot be legitimate partners in implementing climate projects in developing countries. Send @theGCF a tweet or Facebook comment The GCF?s leadership is crucial in making financial flows benefit the people and the planet. It cannot do so by accrediting banks that have contributed greatly to the crisis by funding coal projects. We need the Green Climate Fund to live up to its mandate of resourcing real climate action. And you can help to deliver the message by pressuring them on social media. It would be a serious setback to the global efforts of transitioning the world to 100% renewable energy, as well as the work to eradicate poverty if they accredit banks with proven record of coal financing access to public funds that are urgently needed for climate action. In less than 24 hours, EU leaders meet to talk about Europe?s response. Tell the EU to stand with the people of Belarus and to call for new elections. Sign now! Hi, "The last dictator of Europe", Belarus? President Aleksandr Lukashenko, has been ruling Belarus with an iron grip for 26 years, suppressing democracy and smashing any dissent. But his hold on power may finally come to an end. [1] Two weeks ago, Lukashenko proclaimed another electoral win, despite clear signs that the election was rigged. This time it was too much for the people of Belarus! Thousands marched on the streets to challenge the result. These brave defenders of democracy were met by riot police, and dozens were beaten and injured. More than 6,000 people were arrested. [2] What matters now is the EU?s response -- the EU can stand up to Lukashenko by refusing to recognise him as the President and support free and fair elections as soon as possible. In 24 hours, EU leaders will have a special meeting to come up with a response to the situation in Belarus. [3] If there is an outcry from all corners of Europe before they meet, we can make sure this meeting is not just talk but leads to action. Tell EU leaders to call for new elections in Belarus What happened this summer in Belarus cannot be called elections: main opponents were either imprisoned or barred from registration. [4] Lukashenko's main opponent in the elections, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was forced to leave the country and is now in exile in the EU, in Lithuania. [5] The EU has already signalled that it will issue sanctions against President Lukashenko and the ruling elite, but this is not enough. [6] The people of Belarus have the right to decide on their future and freely elect their leader. And violent repression of peaceful protesters has no place in Europe. Show support for the protesters and let?s make sure the EU calls for new elections as soon as possible. Tell EU leaders not to recognise Lukashenko as President of Belarus! Message-ID: <70A3F0E8DA024258B8E4E9DC00B11FA7@lewpostnew> The Amazon rainforest is burning like hell to secure new farmland. The EU is about to add fuel to the fire by signing a disastrous trade deal. Let?s stop it. You signed this petition last year, now it?s time to spread the word to family and friends. SHARE NOW! Hi, Chainsaws screech through the forest, birds and monkeys flee. The giant tree falls crashing, the trunk is shipped to Europe, the remaining branches burn. Strong and healthy rainforest turns into monoculture farmland. Now the EU wants to increase the demand for farmland by signing a massive trade agreement with a group of four South American countries called Mercosur. [1] This EU-Mercosur deal is like pouring gasoline on the fire. But, there is a chance for us to get this deal stopped: Leaders from France, the Netherlands, and Austria already announced they won?t sign the deal in its current form. [2] The EU is now negotiating the final agreement and countries are pushing for their own interests. All we need is one country to totally block it. You signed this petition last year, now the fires are accelerating again, and we need to up the pressure, to make sure EU countries say no to this deal, whatever form it takes. Please share our call widely with family and friends. Together we can stop the deal. Share with friends! Help save the Amazon The EU-Mercosur agreement is essentially about exchanging beef, soy, and wood (grown on the Amazon's ashes) with gas-guzzling cars and toxic pesticides that aren?t even allowed in the EU anymore. [3] Far-right leader of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro is confident the EU will sign and has been encouraging big agribusiness to burn down the rainforest since he came into office two years ago. The irretrievable loss of primeval rainforest has been accelerating ever since. [4] Burning down the forest destroys its vital carbon stores and heats up the climate. This comes along with the displacement and murder of indigenous people and also the extinction of thousands of species that call the forest their home. [5] But we won?t stand for this, and our movement is growing and internationally connected. Over 600 scientists, two Brazilian indigenous organisations and 340 civil society groups are calling to stop the deal. [6] Now we, more than 1.5 million Europeans [7], are joining the call by sharing this petition. Share with friends! Help save the Amazon Can ordinary people like us really make a difference in stopping a years-in-the-making treaty between world superpowers? Of course, we can! Remember TTIP? [8] When the EU and the US were on the verge of signing an agreement that would?ve flooded Europe with hormone-treated meat and GMO produce, people like you joined a three-million-strong citizens? movement to stop it. In the end, the agreement was canceled. Let's do it again! David (London), J?rg (L?beck), Marta (Warsaw) and the entire WeMove Europe team PS. If the EU-Mercosur agreement passes, Europe will be importing a whole lot more fruit and vegetables treated with pesticides banned in the EU. Demand they clean it up! Sign Now Vladimir, Since April 28, 2020, broken drilling equipment ? as well as 6,500 gallons of bore gel and broken piping ? has been hanging out just off the Oregon coast in the ocean, harming the local habitat and environment and posing an accident just waiting to happen. Why, you may ask? Because of Facebook. One of their subsidiaries was using a fracking technique to install a fiber optic cable when their equipment snapped and broke. Instead of cleaning it up and alerting proper authorities, they just left it there! Sign now to tell Facebook to clean up this mess immediately and stop the project entirely! It's absolutely unacceptable that Facebook thinks, because they are a massive company, they can just leave their gross equipment in the ocean where it's harming the local ecosystem. They are claiming there is no harm in leaving it there, but environmental experts say the opposite. Luckily, Oregon could actually revoke Facebook's permits at any time to prevent further damage. With all of our voices raised together, we have a real chance to stop this fiasco before it's too late. Thank you, Kelsey B. The Care2 Petitions Team P.S. But Europe could finally be on the edge of a breakthrough in dealing with it. The EU is exploring legislation that could force tech companies like Facebook to clamp down on the lies and hate swamping the internet -- and they?ve launched a public consultation to see what people think. Profit-mad internet platforms are pushing for the weakest regulations possible. If we don?t flood the consultation with people calling for tougher rules, they?re sure to win out. Will you take a few minutes to fill in the EU?s survey and call for tough action on Facebook? We?ve put together a simple user guide to help you through it. Yes I'll take 10 minutes to fight hate and disinformation online The stakes couldn?t be higher -- targeted disinformation online has already stoked the far-right, helped put Trump in office, even facilitated genocide. In India, dozens have been murdered in brutal mob lynchings after racist lies and child kidnapping rumours went viral on WhatsApp. The internet giants say they?re taking action, but they still profit directly from algorithms that promote shocking and divisive content -- tech platforms make a billion dollars a year from anti-vaccine followers alone! Countries like the UK and Canada have promised to act on hate speech and disinformation -- but they?ve been dithering. If we can get the EU to take a stand it could finally push them to move and set off a chain reaction across the world. Tell the EU to stand up to the tech giants We know our community can work together to get Europe to act for the wider good -- like when we won a historic ban on bee-killing pesticides by flooding consultations and targeting key decision-makers. Earlier today, Russia?s leading opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned and is currently in a coma receiving medical attention. Navalny was flying to Moscow and it is suspected that the Kremlin is behind the attack, but the Kremlin denies the allegations and wish Mr. Navalny ?a speedy recovery?. b.. The Kremlin has also denied interfering in U.S. elections. However, the Senate Intelligence Committee released its final report on Russia?s meddling in the 2016 election which details the multi-faceted effort made by the Kremlin to alter the outcome of U.S. elections. Why is it important? a.. The Russian government has clearly put itself in direct opposition to the ideas of democratic governance domestically and in its foreign policy. Time and time again, agents of the Russia state have attempted to undermine the democratic choices of citizens around the world to promote their own agenda. b.. This is not the first instance of the Russian government using poison for a political end. Journalist and opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza has been poisoned twice and suffered similar symptoms including a coma. What can you do? a.. For a people-powered organisation like WeMove Europe, it?s a vital one. As our community grows more powerful, there?s more of a chance that we could come under pressure to drop a campaign when powerful people decide they don?t like it. So, we needed to decide now, before we?re in that position. In the end, it was an easy one: we won?t take money from big business, no matter how much they offer us. That means we can keep on challenging the corporations that try to rig the European system in their own favour without risking our independence. But turning down the money from big business isn?t without consequences. It means that if we want to keep on building a people-powered movement for Europe, donations from the WeMove community will be more and more important. Sign Now Vladimir, Things just keep going from bad to worse for the United States Postal Service (USPS). After Trump appointed his lackey and huge corporate donor, Louis DeJoy, as Postmaster General, we knew it was a bad sign. But no one could have anticipated just how disruptive and nefarious DeJoy's actions would be. Under his leadership, postal workers were prohibited from using their overtime to fulfill their many duties and were told to "leave mail behind" instead of working extra hours ? mail that includes lifesaving medication, and other vital necessities that people have no other way to get in the middle of a pandemic. We've also seen mass removal of blue mailboxes all over the country, and automated mail sorting machines are rapidly being "decommissioned," bringing the efficacy of the USPS to a grinding halt. The election is looming ever closer, and will involve an unprecendented amount of mail-in ballots thanks to Trump's shameful response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is voter suppresion, plain and simple. We cannot let this administration get away with stealing another election. Trump and DeJoy claim that these changes have been implemented to supposedly "cut costs," but the government should have provided financial aid to the USPS long ago. As a result, critically endangered orangutans are on the brink of extinction. Unilever buys more than 1 million tonnes of palm oil each year, and uses it in everything from Dove soap to Knorr soup. The corporate giant has promised to source its palm oil sustainably by 2020 -- but has failed to live up to this promise. So far, the forest fires aren?t a big news story yet. We can change that. We need to hire a video squad on the ground in Indonesia to capture footage of the forest fires -- armed with professional filming equipment and drones that can withstand the heat. Palm oil trees are planted in monocultures, drenched in toxic pesticides. The Covid crisis means that journalists are finding it harder to travel to remote locations and report on the forest fires and the illegal slash and burn practices that palm oil producers are using. Crew members were holding a party onboard, and no one jumped in to fix their trajectory. When the ship struck a coral reef and ran aground, what was once a pristine area filled with unique habitats swelled with poisonous oil ? 1,000 tons of oil, to be precise. On this solemn occasion, World BEYOND War members around the world came together to learn and discuss the impact of nuclear war and make meaningful the vow: ?Never Again.? Among hundreds of actions that took place worldwide to commemorate the bombings, here are a few highlights from World BEYOND War chapters: Japan for a World BEYOND War hosted a candlelight action in Nagoya, featuring speeches and music. Victoria for a World BEYOND War hosted a Hibakusha Remembrance Webinar, with talks by Dr. Mary-Wynne Ashford, Dr. Jonathan Down, and youth activist Magritte Gordaneer. The WBW NYC Metro area chapter sponsored a virtual screening of the powerful film The Vow from Hiroshima, which tells the inspiring story of Setsuko Thurlow, a passionate, 85-year-old survivor of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima. We followed the film screening with a free-form online discussion. In addition to learning about the impact of nuclear weapons and honoring the victims of the bombings, this 75th anniversary compels us to take action to ban nuclear weapons. Accordingly, we publicized Setsuko's call to action, urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to acknowledge Canada's involvement in and contributions to the two atomic bombings and to ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. We also published a number of articles and videos on our website about the urgent need for nuclear abolition. Read more here: Why Do We Still Have the Bomb? by William J. Perry and Tom Z. In response, California is choosing to burn its inmates. Sign Now California is, once again, on fire. From north to south, wildfires are raging and causing even more unprecedented death and destruction. And it's getting worse every year, due to Trump administration policies that continue to let climate change spiral out of control. But since California doesn't have enough salaried, professional firefighters to combat these disasters, the state is turning to prisons. Locked up, shackled, with their rights and freedoms stripped away, incarcerated people ? who are disproportionately Black and Brown ? have little control over their lives, and the state is fully exploiting this fact. To make up for the shortage in firefighters, prisons are compelling inmates to go out and battle the flames ? paying them as little as $2 a day to put their lives on the line, while denying them the opportunity to become professional firefighters upon release. But because prisons have been the sites of some of the largest COVID-19 outbreaks in the country, due to cramped conditions and insufficient masks and hand sanitizer, many incarcerated people are simply too sick to help. The answer to this problem is not to shove more prisoners into the flames ? it's to fight climate change and stop these fires once and for all. Please sign the petition demanding that the federal U.S. government take action against climate change and send federal aid now! Thank you for all that you do, Miranda B. Eight million tonnes of plastic dumped in the ocean each year - the equivalent of a truckload per minute. [1] A lifeless whale on a Spanish beach, its stomach dismantled by 29 kgs of plastic waste. [2] The year was 2017 and momentum was building in Europe for a ban on single use plastics. But would enough people actually be willing to do something about it? The answer was a resounding ?yes?. Our community?s reaction to the plastics problem was literally massive. What we achieved shows how much we cared about our oceans, our environment, our wildlife. Here?s how we got there: We joined up with some seriously skilled and knowledgeable partner organisations that knew we had a real chance to win, if we worked together. This included Break Free from Plastic, Rethink Plastic, SumOfUs, Uplift, Skiftet, Aufstehn, De Clic, and Campact. Each group brought different superpowers to the table ? from understanding what?s happening inside the EU institutions, to expertise on plastics policy, to getting our message out in the press, to amplifying the voices of people across Europe that can speak truth to power in their own languages and on their own terms. And so, we got started. The first step was a petition which sought to show the European Commission that we, a whopping 750,000 Europeans, cared enough to act. Frans Timmermans, then Vice-President of the European Commission, was going to open the EU conference on plastics, attended by everyone, from the industry and the plastics lobby to think tanks and NGOs. We needed to get his attention. Billboards backed up our petition. In rapid response to our appeal, individuals from our community like you and I donated what each of us could to raise over ?35,000. With partners, we plastered the area around Brussels and the conference venue with 150 billboards displaying images of fish, birds and ocean life killed by plastics. On the day of the conference, we delivered our hundreds of thousands of signatures. One of our billboards in Brussels on the day of the conference Interestingly, Mr. Timmermans did not just nod, smile, and politely accept the petition on that day in Brussels. He told us that he would be our ?ally? and fight for an ambitious EU strategy on plastics. Some minutes later, he was back in that conference room, talking about our petition in his opening speech, speaking to everyone from the plastics industry to environmental groups. Right after, he posted a video of our petition delivery to his social media. [3] It felt like a good start. Handing over the signatures to Vice-President Timmermans with our friends from Campact and Rethink Plastic Alliance A few months later, in January 2018, the Commission adopted its proposal on plastics. And it was actually great. It proposed unprecedented measures to curb plastic waste, including banning some single-use plastics. [4] So, we went back to work with a new petition targeted at the European Council and all EU governments. And it?s a good thing we did - as it turns out, Coca Cola, Nestle, and Pepsi had already been lobbying our national governments. [5] Any one of them could have vetoed it. But our governments stood behind us, and the proposal continued to the European Parliament. Right before the Environment Committee?s vote, some Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) proposed changes that were pretty awful, and some got accepted -- meaning they went on to be voted by the whole Parliament. If they were accepted in that next vote, we knew the new directive would be essentially meaningless, and wildlife and our environment would continue to be ravaged by plastics. [6] We knew we had to pull out all the stops to prevent a disastrous outcome. So, we emailed our MEPs to convince them to hold strong on the ban -- in total we sent our MEPs almost 100,000 emails! Some MEPs really didn?t like getting so many emails. Others wrote and said it was amazing to see this kind of engagement. But the results were clear: MEPs voted down the worst amendments and voted for a strong law against single-use plastics. [7] In 2019, we got a new EU law banning some of the worst offender plastics in the whole EU. Those plastic straws, cups and cutlery that defy logic and drive us utterly mad will be gone by next year. [8] The campaign itself connected masses of people to push for a ban on a whole lot of dodgy plastics. But it also got many people to stop and think: Why am I buying so much plastic crap? Why are there only plastic straws in bars and shops? And why is industry not producing alternatives that don?t destroy oceans, for which there are no alternatives? It inspired a lot of people to think about doing things differently. Ultimately, it?s the story of how the fight for a law, a ban on single-use plastics, has already achieved so much before it?s even been enacted. Yes, it will ban a range of the world?s worst single-use plastics in Europe in just a few months? time. But it?s also shown that it?s possible to bring people together from all corners of Europe, to demand a more sustainable and responsible world. But the story isn?t over yet: Right now, the EU ban on single-use plastics is being implemented and enacted in all EU countries, including yours. And exactly how that?s done will differ from country to country. So, it?s a perfect opportunity for the plastics industry. They?re still trying to get lots of plastics exempt from the law taking effect this coming January. Watch this space for the latest chapter in this story, coming soon... Message-ID: <2D42B5DE3B1343D181B3A23A13416878@lewpostnew> Do you know the story of the sky blue scarves that are often worn on International Peace Day (September 21)? The "Border-free Blue Scarves" project was founded by the Afghan Peace Volunteers in Afghanistan, as a response to Professor Noam Chomsky's challenge to build a world free of borders. According to the Afghan Peace Volunteers, the blue scarf "represents our collective wish as a human family to live without wars, to share our resources and to take care of our earth under the same blue sky." The International Day of Peace on September 21 is less than one month away. Following the lead of the Afghan Peace Volunteers, World BEYOND War encourages everyone to wear sky blue scarves on the International Day of Peace to symbolize peace and support for war abolition. Established in 1981 by the United Nations, Peace Day is celebrated by many nations and organizations with events all over the world. We're working with volunteers, chapters, and allied organizations worldwide to organize virtual and physically-distanced in-person events to commemorate the day with education and awareness-building on issues of peace and war. Here's how you can celebrate the International Day of Peace: a.. Get your sky blue scarf b.. Get tickets to our online screening of the film "We Are Many" c.. Check our events listings for online and in-person events on or around September 21 d.. REPLY to this email for organizing assistance with hosting a Peace Day event e.. Find fact sheets and handouts on our Flyers page The International Day of Peace is an important day to reaffirm our collective call for peace. As a UN-designated day for nonviolence and ceasefire, this 24-hour pause on war begs the question of why we can't have year-long or forever-long pauses in wars. This September 21, join us to demand war abolition. Act. Grow. RootsAction.org is joining with a rapidly growing list of organizations and individuals from around the world to send an urgent appeal to the presidents, prime ministers, and legislatures of nine nuclear nations: China, France, India, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This is an appeal from the people of the world to nine nuclear governments to each commit to a nuclear policy of no first strike, not ever, not for any reason; and to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and to collectively agree to immediately begin disarming on a schedule to completely eliminate all nuclear weapons from the earth no later than August 6, 2045. Click here to see the list of supporters and to add your name. The full text of the appeal is as follows (available on the website in various languages): We, the people of good will, of all walks of life, living on all continents and professing different creeds and religions, direct your attention to the threat of an all-out nuclear war that can erupt very easily either due to deliberate actions of any nuclear-weapons state or because of unintentional, human, technical or other mistake. We are witnessing that the threshold for the use nuclear weapons in a limited or on large-scale attacks recently has been dramatically lowered, bringing the entire world to the brink of a nuclear Armageddon. Many high-ranking military and civilian officials, politicians and experts are openly talking about the possibility of using nuclear weapons in a first strike attack against any nation under many pretexts with low-yield or high-yield nuclear charges. The United States in fact has withdrawn from a number of rather well-known and useful nuclear arms control treaties and accords for dubious reasons and illogical explanations. Nuclear arms delivery vehicles are becoming more sophisticated, faster and more precise. They have been combined into a dangerous combination of arms embracing strategic and tactical nuclear weapons with missile defense assets and conventional capabilities, and with a possibility to place strike weapons in space, including missile defense systems and anti-satellite weapons. Many military exercises that earlier have been conducted with the use of conventional weapons, gradually are being transformed into drills using mock nuclear weapons. Nuclear arms experts calculate that during an initial massive nuclear attack, at least 34 million people will immediately perish and 57 million people will receive multiple injuries and wounds that will cause horrible pain, suffering, radiation sickness and death. Additionally, various kinds of infrastructure, flora and fauna, nuclear power plants, water resources ? including potable water and hydropower dams ? will be heavily damaged or destroyed completely by huge firestorms, vast nuclear contamination, powerful explosions, and earthquakes. But that is just the immediate impact. The nuclear winter that would be created by even a limited nuclear war would threaten all of humanity with starvation and other mortal threats. We who have voluntarily signed this appeal urge you, as the leaders of all nine nuclear nations, to take the following actions in 2020: First, as an initial step leading to comprehensive and irreversible nuclear disarmament on a global scale, to pledge not to use and denounce any kind of nuclear weapon use in a first strike against any nation at any time. Second, to sign and ratify the international Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons with the subsequent commitment specified in the next item. Third, to commit to irreversibly dismantling all nuclear weapons by no later than August 6, 2045 or earlier ? by all nine nuclear weapon states, in carefully calibrated stages and through well-developed and mutually acceptable mechanisms of inspections, provided that all nuclear-weapon states will follow this pattern simultaneously and honestly. And now, it turns out, it's killing us. Scientists previously found that tiny shards of broken-down plastic fragments, called microplastics, had found their way into everything from beer and tap water to table salt and seafood dishes. Now, it turns out the contamination has spread even further. A recent study examined tissues from human organs and found microplastics in every single organ, for 100% of the samples. To reiterate: this study found that microplastics were lodged all throughout these humans' bodies. And that's likely true for your body, too. That might not seem like a big deal on the surface. But research further showed that the presence of microplastics is deadly to our immune systems. When human immune cells were exposed to microplastics coated in blood plasma, 60% of them died within 24 hours. His poisoning is a blatant act of aggression and demonstrates Putin?s belief that his word is law in Russia. b.. Navalny is expected to recover but the long-term effects of the poison are unknown. Vladamir Kara Murza, another Putin critic has been poisoned twice ? read his account HERE. What can you do? a.. Read more about Russia?s history of poisoning its enemies. b.. This might seem like just a legal oddity, but it has real consequences when pets are abused and families try to get justice. Since brutality against furniture is not an actual violent crime, brutality against animals is similarly just considered "property damage." If someone harms, torments, or even murders your fur baby, often the only thing courts can offer you is monetary compensation. Anyone who has had and loved a pet knows that your animal is not just your property. Losing an animal is tragic and soul-crushing. On top of that, animal abuse is a violent crime and it's time for our laws to reflect the severity of these offenses. Many of the most violent serial killers throughout history started off torturing animals, but if our laws don't see this as more serious than scratching a car, we can't stop these perpetrators before their crimes escalate. All 50 U.S. states must take action now. Please sign the petition to elevate pets in the eyes of the law from simply being property so we can protect them better! Year after year, it pumps millions of gallons of precious groundwater from the town to sell at an outrageous markup. And year after year, Vittel?s people watch as their water levels plummet. They?re now facing their fourth straight year of drought! It?s an ecological disaster, but a small group of brave residents is organizing their community to fight back against this corporate giant -- and they need our help. Nestl? is already facing a lawsuit in France for pumping water without permission. And with local groups on the offensive from the US to Canada to Switzerland, the company is in panic mode. After years of pumping Vittel dry, this could finally be the moment they sound the retreat and leave this town in peace. That?s exactly what these volunteer residents are fighting for -- but right now they?re paying for everything out of their own pocket: expert legal advice, demonstrations, and travel for advocacy meetings. And unless we help them, they?ll run out of money in weeks. Will you help these water warriors organize their community and beat back Nestl??s greed? Thanks to their inaction, the water level is now TEN METERS below its natural level. But against all odds, this small group of retired volunteers is actually winning -- slowly but surely. Just last year, residents -- with the support of SumOfUs members -- flooded a public consultation and forced the government to cancel an absurd pipeline project that would have cost the town tens of millions of Euros to get their water elsewhere? just to avoid upsetting Nestl?! But that victory came at a huge financial cost, and now just as the town inches closer to freeing itself from Nestl??s grasp, the whole movement could go broke. We can help.
