Over 200 intellectuals are calling on EU leaders to rise to the
challenge of the coronavirus crisis. They demand a universal basic income, a
programme to keep people employed, and massive support for public services
and medical research. The letter is making big waves in the media across the
world and is a chance to reach politicians in Brussels -- and to renew
Europe.

This open letter was launched on our YouMove platform by a group of
economists and academics and endorsed by numerous intellectuals, including
Nobel-winning author Olga Tokarczuk, director Agnieszka Holland and the U.S.
economist Jeffrey Sachs. We think it may interest you.
Hi,
Over 200 intellectuals from Europe and beyond signed an open letter to the
leaders of the EU urging them to take decisive action during the coronavirus
crisis. We face a choice between a renewed Europe or authoritarianism. What
will we choose?
The letter asks Europe to reinvent itself through a universal basic income,
support for enterprises in keeping people employed (in exchange for shares),
help for public services and funds for European research on medicine and
vaccine.
It demands European solidarity, living up to European values and asks not to
repeat the mistakes of the crisis of 2008, which gave bailouts to big banks
and forced Europeans into a decade of austerity.
Among the signatories are economists, academics, politicians, writers,
directors and thinkers. Their call was published on the media all over the
world, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Le Soir and El
Pais. [1]
Right now we must use every single tool available to us to reach the
decision-makers in Brussels and urge them to push Europe towards a radical
shift. This letter is already making big waves. Will you add your signature?

Quotes from the letter:
“The solutions adopted to combat the pandemic will determine the future of
liberal democracy, the economy and European integration.”
“Crisis is a time for making choices. On the one hand, it may lead us to the
fall of the European Union and a slipping into chaos and authoritarianism.
On the other, however, it can be a chance to renew the social agreement
between Europe and its citizens."
Thank you!
In solidarity,
Marta (Warsaw), Giulio (Rome) and the entire WeMove team
P.S. Among the over 200 signatories of the letter there is the Nobel-prize
winning writer Olga Tokarczuk, director Agnieszka Holland, political author
Ulrike Guerot, historian Carlo Ginzburg, writer Fernando Savater and
cultural theorist Mieke Bal and many others. Join them and sign!
