Hi,

?We have no money to pay, we have to eat.? shouts a person at a cashier in a supermarket in Italy. People in Italy are running out of food and money. A video of a couple begging for a ?50 advance outside a bank, after their shop closed due to the quarantine, is making the rounds. [1]

What is happening in Italy after three weeks of lockdown can happen to the rest of us over the next few days too. When 22% of Europeans are already at risk of poverty, this number risks spiralling further. [2] And a national response will not be enough. We need the EU to act as one.

Our demand is simple: monthly payments from the EU to ensure people have enough for rent, groceries and bills -- a European basic income during this emergency.

Over 130,000 people have signed our petition asking for this, but we need to make sure decision makers hear our demands. [3] Like us, politicians are stuck at home. With your help, we have a plan to reach them in different ways and make this campaign a big success:

  a.. A Twitter demo: Politicians and journalists are on Twitter even more than usual. So we will take our demonstrations there too, flooding their feed with our demands! With a little money we can place ads on Twitter to amplify our protest. 
  a.. Newspaper ads: Decision makers like Macron, Lagarde and Merkel [4] only read a few newspapers, Politico and the Financial Times among them. Ads in these papers are expensive, but are a sure way to catch their attention. 
  a.. Your video to decision-makers: We?ll ask you to send us a video expressing your concerns surrounding this emergency, explaining why we need a universal basic income. We?ll commission a video-maker to edit and compile them and send the video directly to decision-makers. 
European leaders meet on a weekly basis so we need to be fast in finding new ways to protest. If we receive enough donations, we can be up and running with this action next week.

Low-income families have been and will continue to be hit the worst by the effects of coronavirus. Either families run out of money or parents have to continue working, risking infection. A lot of children don?t get their regular meals at school anymore and most food kitchens are closed. [5]

A basic income is a simple and fast solution. In essence, it involves no more than giving people modest, regular and unconditional cash payments -- much like a pension.

Until now, it was hard to imagine something like this being taken up by the EU, like so much before the coronavirus hit. Yet even World Bank senior officials are promoting this idea. [6] Our signatures only count if we?re creative with our protest. That?s why we?ve come up with the ideas above.

Solidarity is what we people in Europe need and what only we can give each other. Your donation, of whatever amount you can spare, is another way of showing solidarity!

The immense outpouring of solidarity and explosion of community organising in direct response to this crisis is heart-warming. All across Europe, people help each other.                   A message in support of this petition from Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate:
                  "I was in Iraq during the sanctions put on by USA and was horrified to visit hospitals where Iraq children died, without medicine as a result of these barbaric sanctions and war against Iraq. It is estimated that over half a million Iraqi children under age 6 died as a result of sanctions, and I am very sorry and ask for the forgiveness of all those who lost children and families due to the perpetual sanctions and war against their country. It is overdue that USA respect the wishes of Iraqi people and their government and leave Iraq immediately."

                  Just the phase of the mass killing and destruction of Iraq that began 17 years ago, assessed by the most scientifically respected measures available, killed over 1.4 million Iraqis.

                  While U.S. troops have been reduced in Iraq, they have never been removed. In January, the Iraqi Parliament voted that all U.S. troops should leave. The U.S. government has refused to leave, and has instead proposed installing ("defensive") missiles in Iraq targeting Iran. 

                  While Iran is depicted in U.S. media as an evil enemy, the U.S. military does not claim that Iran is a threat to the actual United States, only to U.S. troops near Iran and U.S. "interests." The refusal to leave and the decision to install missiles endanger Iraq, Iran, the entire region, and a world at risk of nuclear escalation and climate collapse that cannot afford any more wars. 

                  The aerial bombardment of Baghdad 17 years ago, which was intended to ?shock and awe? people into terror and submission, followed months of pro-war propaganda in U.S. corporate media and from the U.S. government.

                  Senate Foreign Relations Chair Joe Biden promoted the White House?s lies about weapons of mass destruction, pushed hard for war, and orchestrated hearings that excluded dissenting voices.

                  Many were fooled or claimed to be. Donald Trump?s last public comment on the war before it started was that he supported it.

                  It is now popular in U.S. politics to deny having supported the war, even to claim to have ended it. But there is virtually no discussion of the moral and practical necessity of complying with the wishes of the Iraqi government ? wishes that line up with a demand that many of us have been making for 17 years ? to withdraw all U.S. troops and mercenaries and bases and weapons from Iraqi soil.

I hope you?re doing OK in these unprecedented and challenging times. The global pandemic is hitting all of us in different ways, and so amongst all the bad news, we want to share with you some progress on the campaign to get Rio Tinto to cut all ties with the coal lobby in Australia.

In a report released last week1, Rio Tinto publicly admitted that the Minerals Council of Australia has advocated to undermine the Paris Agreement. Rio Tinto claims to be a climate champion ? they support the Paris Agreement and have a net zero emissions by 2050 target2. This is the best opportunity we?ve had yet to call on Rio Tinto to leave the Minerals Council for good. With more public pressure, we could get them over the line.

Can you write to Rio Tinto today calling on them to cut all ties with the Minerals Council of Australia?

If Rio Tinto wants to be taken seriously on climate action, it has to leave the Minerals Council. They currently pay 2.1 million US dollar a year to be a member of one of the world?s top ten climate-wrecking lobby groups3, and they?re facing increasing pressure to leave from investors in the lead up to their annual shareholders meeting.

Write to Rio Tinto today and tell them to cut all ties with the Minerals Council of Australia.

It?s not enough for Rio Tinto to say it wants industry associations to support the Paris Agreement. It needs to walk away from groups like the Minerals Council that don?t measure up to this standard ? it?s that simple.

            Microsoft announced it during the Friday afternoon media graveyard shift hoping that no press would pick up the story. But NBC News snapped the story up and credited the human rights organizations involved in the #DropAnyVision campaign for the win! 

            That's right, YOU, yes you were instrumental in forcing Microsoft to respect its own ethical principles in rolling out dangerous facial recognition technology. Now, the world looks a little less like an Orwellian dystopian nightmare because of your actions. 



            Sometimes we think that clicking on a petition doesn't matter, well, in this case SumOfUs members set things in motion, forced the media to scrutinize AnyVision, forced Microsoft to launch an investigation into AnyVision with Eric Holder at the helm and, ultimately, brought down the insidious AnyVision-Microsoft partnerships.

Hi,

My brother was sent a letter last week: he?s lost his job as the company he worked for is out of business due to the coronavirus crisis. Luckily he has me: I will support him - our parent?s pension isn?t enough.

My family is not the only one: millions in Spain, Italy and across Europe have already fallen below the poverty line. Many more will soon follow - and not everyone has a relative who can help.

To prop up an economy destroyed by the virus, governments will have to spend billions - which they?ll have to borrow. But access to borrowing is not equal for all: countries that face high-interest rates won?t be able to afford borrowing, and will have to abandon millions of people in devastating economic situations.

Nine countries, including France, Italy and Spain are proposing a solution: coronabonds. Basically, pooling the debt of EU countries together, to reduce the difference in the interest rates each country pays on their national debt - so that everyone can borrow. But four leaders are against the idea, including Prime Ministers Rutte in the Netherlands and Merkel in Germany. [1]

There is a chance for us to get through to them. Next Tuesday, EU governments will meet in an extraordinary summit. In this moment of crisis, big change is possible and public pressure is needed right now so all the European ministers stand strong behind the proposal. Sign now and we will deliver our message before they meet.

            Tell Charles Michel we expect united action! 
     

Across Europe, states and people are all facing losses of life, jobs and income but some communities have been more affected by coronavirus infections and death than others.

Those most affected have seen their healthcare systems stretched beyond their limits, and have been forced to stop all economic activity in order to save lives. It?s not a coincidence that the most affected communities are also those where austerity was more savagely applied in the recent past.

In these circumstances, borrowing to save lives and livelihoods is vital. We need to make it possible. Coronabonds are the solution. But last week European heads of state could not come to an agreement, and time is running out.

This Tuesday we need them to find common ground. We are in this crisis together and we can only come out of it by working together. We must learn from our common history: it?s when we show solidarity and work together that we do best. When EU governments meet, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, must know Europeans want equal borrowing for all countries so that people across Europe have an equal chance to come out the other end of this crisis.

            Ask European governments to take action! 
     

People in Europe are showing so much solidarity: from supporting vulnerable neighbours with shopping and other chores to expressing solidarity from balconies. People are playing their part, our governments must do that too.

The coronavirus pandemic has pushed climate diplomacy online, greening
much of UN Climate Change?s operations but virtual meeting bring their
own challenges

As the coronavirus pandemic sweeps across the world, the climate
diplomacy that was so critical to leverage governments into
strengthening their climate plans this year is moving online.

And with it, the tough diplomatic and political ask expected ahead of a
critical climate summit in Glasgow, or Cop26, in November has also
become a technological challenge.

?Some of us might be cut off or the sound might not work very well so we
will need to adjust to that. As the Adaptation Committee, we can do it
very well,? smiled Olga Pilifosova, manager of the Adaptation programme
at UN Climate Change secretariat, from an online Zoom meeting.

Adaptation to the impacts of climate change ? such as heatwaves, floods,
and droughts ? is part of a two-pronged UN strategy alongside
mitigation, focused on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The coronavirus which as of Tuesday killed more than 36,500 people
worldwide has forced UN Climate Change to find new, greener, ways of
working, pushing climate diplomacy into the digital space.

The Cop26 presidency team is holding ?virtual trips? and international
meetings through video and phone conferences.

UN Climate Change announced it won?t hold any physical meetings until
the end of April and although a number of meetings have been postponed,
smaller sessions have moved online. It?s too early to say whether the
pandemic will affect Cop26, and UN Climate Change is set to decide on
Wednesday evening about a mid-year session due in Bonn in June.

As Zoom diplomacy takes hold, the informal spaces for negotiators to
meet at the coffee machine or for a corridor chat have been replaced
with a much more streamlined process online.

While the cancellation of all carbon-intensive air travel is a positive
side effect of the crisis for the international climate community,
adapting to virtual meeting brings its own challenges.

For many developing countries, where fibre-optic cables are not
available and bandwidth is low, connectivity, and therefore
participation, has proved difficult at times.

Coronavirus slows developing nations? plans to step up climate action in
2020

?The problem is that in some countries, internet is still an expensive
luxury,? Alpha Kaloga, a climate negotiator from Guinea, told Climate
Home News.

But delay to climate action is not an option. ?Given the urgency of the
climate crisis, we want and need the work to get done, but we want it to
be inclusive,? Kaloga added.

During a virtual meeting of the Warsaw International Mechanism ? the
international framework which addresses climate impacts which emissions
cuts and adaptation efforts cannot prevent ? one of two African
representatives dialling in from Sudan was unable to participate because
of low bandwidth.

UN Climate Change is working to ensure everyone can participate to
online meetings.

In 2018, UN Climate Change spent $12 million on travel for participants
and staff. Now, its travel team is offering to book delegates with
connectivity issues hotel rooms close to their homes, to ensure they can
still participate in online sessions.

Where possible, other UN regional offices could also be put at
delegates? disposal dependent on domestic travel restrictions.

And a narrow two-hour window in the middle of day Central European Time
has been identified to accommodate the greatest time zone span. It is
daytime in Europe and Africa, evening in Asia, early morning in the
Americas, but the middle of the night in the Pacific.

Japan sticks to 2030 climate goals, accused of a ?disappointing? lack of
ambition

While virtual meetings are a necessary short-term fix, in the longer-
term poorer nations will need additional technological capacity.

Tenzin Wangmo, of Bhutan and the lead negotiator for a group of Least
Developed Countries (LDC), told CHN that even in small meetings, LDC
negotiators often had to turn off the video function to ensure better
connection.

?Infrastructure is going to be a challenge for the LDC group.
Definitely, it?s going to impact the substance of the discussions,? she
said, adding that many LDC countries had just started to work on their
new climate plans and much of that work was now halted.

?I don?t think having a meeting using technology can help build trust
between each other,? she added.

Speaking to CHN, Carlos Fuller, of Belize and lead negotiator of the
Alliance of Small Island States (Aosis), said it was difficult to
imagine online meetings extending to the whole climate diplomacy process
and to the climate talks which bring together nearly 200 countries.

?We [Aosis] interact well because it?s a smaller group and we know each
other. But I still want to see how a global meeting is going to work on
a Zoom platform,? Fuller said. Wangmo agreed: ?I don?t think we can
bring all-party negotiations online. I think that would impact
participation.?

Part of the reason is that for an online meeting ?to be successful, it
is to be short,? Fuller added, finding a silver lining in the need for
some efficiency improvement.

But efficiency does not necessarily mean the same thing for everyone.
?You end up addressing the most important issues for the most important
players,? one developing nation diplomat warned.

Virtual meetings also remove the human contact, personal ties and
spontaneity in discussions that have long been the hallmark of
diplomatic deal-making. Popular online meeting platforms also don?t
support instant translations and negotiators can no longer rely on body
language.

?Negotiations are like role play and you really need to be face to face
to do that,? one diplomat told CHN. ?You get a feeling if there is
tension in the room, how people react to propositions and it?s easier to
test ideas?.

This bargaining aspect of diplomacy has seen negotiators long favour
closed doors meetings to broker deals and compromise. Online
conversations are much easily recorded, which may allow more
transparency but does not suit everyone?s negotiating strategy.

?That changes the type of conversations that can take place,? the
diplomat added.

Many agree UN Climate Change processes would benefit from more efficient
processes, more virtual meetings and less international travel. ?This is
forcing us to think about how we operate,? one veteran negotiator told
CHN, ?but it is not going to create the dynamic that we need? before
Cop26.

?And a crisis coping-mechanism is not necessarily the way we want to
adapt in the long term?.

The COVID-19 pandemic is touching us all in ways we could hardly imagine. But for healthcare workers on the frontlines, it?s taken an unspeakable toll. Only after massive public pressure from our coalition, 7,700+ letters sent, and 19 days after a pandemic was declared, CADSI (Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries) cancelled the massive weapons show.                               NoWar2020 Goes Virtual; Plans Made for NoWar2021
                              In light of the victory and continuing concerns about the coronavirus, we will postpone our in-person conference and actions until June 2021. CADSI has already scheduled CANSEC 2021 for June 2021, which gives us over a year to put pressure on CADSI. Accordingly, #NoWar2021 will take place June 1-6, 2021, following a similar schedule as had been planned for this year. View the updated schedule here.

                        COVID-19 is exposing how out of whack the priorities 
of our governments can be. Look at this simple comparison:


                        This is a moment in which our societies can, and 
likely will, be turned either toward greater violence, resource extraction, 
and greed, or toward a more sensible and sustainable set of priorities, such 
as those argued for by World BEYOND War.

                        As a global peace organization, we've always relied 
on the internet. Now we've dramatically increased our use of videos, 
webinars, and online gatherings to organize for a global ceasefire and a 
transfer of resources to systems of defense against actual dangers.

                        This takes funding, and our annual conference (which 
raises funds as well as activism) has been postponed for a year. Here's what 
a donation to World BEYOND War can help us do:


                        A $15 USD donation covers our service provider costs 
to host a free educational webinar, such as the one last night and others 
recently held. Many more are coming this spring.

                        A $25 donation covers a month?s cost of hosting our 
website. Our website is in itself an educational and organizing tool with 
extensive multimedia resources for building a movement to abolish war.

                        A $50 donation covers the costs of a WBW chapter 
promo pack. Currently, World BEYOND War coordinates 16 chapters in 7 
countries with several more in the launch phase. We also maintain 
partnerships with 82 affiliates around the world. Our chapters work 
aggressively within their respective legislative structures to redirect 
resources toward programs that promote social and economic justice.

                        A $75 donation can put 10 copies of our book A 
Global Security System: An Alternative to War (AGSS) into classrooms. AGSS 
is a blueprint for abolishing war and replacing it with a sustainable 
security system. It has already proven to be a useful tool in classrooms 
across the world.


                        ?What a treasure. It is so well written and 
conceptualized. The beautiful text and design immediately captured the 
attention and imagination of my 90 graduate and undergraduate students. 
Visually and substantively, the clarity of the book appeals to young people

summary version of AGSS in another language. It's already in eight!

                        We do so much with so little because we rely heavily 
on dedicated and talented volunteers for almost everything we do. This model 
means that your contribution goes very far!

especially appreciated is becoming a recurring donor. For $15 USD a 
month?less than 50 cents a day?you can contribute to building an on-going 
sustained movement to abolish war. Remember to choose a book or shirt as a

      As the global response to COVID-19 strengthens, we?re seeing countless 
acts of compassion, community solidarity, and resilience, even as the death 
toll grows.

      Doctors, nurses, and ordinary workers all over have been pushing ahead 
on the frontlines to slow the rate of transmission. Yet there?ve been some 
stark reminders that the climate crisis doesn?t stop amid a global pandemic.

      The strongest storm of the year has just slammed into the Pacific 
islands of Fiji and Vanuatu. On top of that,  fossil fuel companies are 
exploiting this moment to drive forward more climate-wrecking projects.

      It?s enraging ? and that?s why it?s so important that we all unite 
right now around the principles for a Just Recovery from COVID-19. Thousands 
of organisations and people across the world have already signed on.

      Our coronavirus response must put people and planet ? not corporations 
and polluting industries ? first. It?s the only way we can build back better

      In Case You Missed It


      Cyclone Harold: A deadly category 5 storm ? the strongest of 2020 so 
far ? slammed into the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu just as the country 
declared a national emergency for COVID-19. Some residents have had to 
ignore distancing orders and seek refuge in evacuation centers. Medical 
supplies are already scant. The cyclone then ravaged its way through Fiji 
and Tonga, having already killed 27 people in the Solomon Islands last week.

      ?We now face two life-threatening disasters at once ? and both 
threaten the existence of an already disadvantaged people,? said Fenton 
Lutunatabua, Pacific Managing Director at 350.org. It?s a harrowing example 
of the injustice of the climate crisis, which hits those who did the least 
to cause it hardest. Read more



      ?Unacceptable?: Activists are sounding the alarm as the oil industry 
takes advantage of this moment of crisis to push ever more fossil fuels. 
With talks underway in the United States for a fourth stimulus package on 
infrastructure, thousands are writing to Congress to make sure Big Oil doesn?t 
see a penny.

      And the Keystone XL pipeline may be going ahead, after some states 
pushed through new measures protecting pipelines as ?critical 
infrastructure.? TC Energy (formerly TransCanada) has dispatched workers 
along the route despite the public health threat, putting them and 
vulnerable rural and Indigenous communities at risk.

      We can?t let fossil fuel companies manipulate COVID-19 at the expense 
of our communities: sign the petition now to demand TC Energy halt their 
Keystone XL activity and withdraw its workers now.



      Hundreds took part in a coordinated online Climate Strike hosted in 
Turkey last Friday.

      Climate action continues: The UN announced last week that its annual 
climate talks ? COP26 due to be held in Glasgow ? will be postponed because 
of coronavirus. But organizers are adapting their plans and holding online 
actions to keep climate and a Just Recovery on the agenda.

      In Turkey on Friday, a hundreds-strong digital strike and livestream 
concert featuring Turkish artists was broadcast on Youtube, with thousands 
more tuning in. Expect more #ClimateStrikeOnline actions from across the 
globe this Friday ? and please keep posting your own solidarity snapshots on 
social media.

      #CutAllTies: Ahead of Rio Tinto?s annual general meeting this 
Wednesday, people took to social media and email to tell the mining giant to 
ditch Australia?s Mineral Council, one of the world?s biggest fossil fuel 
lobbying groups. The company has already admitted the Council is undermining 
the 2015 Paris Agreement by promoting coal. Take a moment to write to Rio 
Tinto and tell them it?s time to cut all ties with the Council. It?s a 
simple and effective campaign action to take, even in isolation.

      Just Recovery: Amid the COVID-19 emergency response, we?re starting to 
see Just Recovery principles put into action. Portugal will treat migrants 
as residents to ensure they have access to basic health services, and Spain 
intends to set up a permanent basic universal income to help people recover 
from the economic devastation. In Ukraine, people are opposing cuts to 
health care and education budgets that would maintain coal subsidies, while 
activists in the UK are calling for strict climate conditions on airlines. 
And this New York landlord cancelled April rent for his tenants, urging them 
to stay safe and support loved ones.

      #CutAllTies: Ahead of Rio Tinto?s annual general meeting this 
Wednesday, people took to social media and email to tell the mining giant to 
ditch Australia?s Mineral Council, one of the world?s biggest fossil fuel 
lobbying groups. The company has already admitted the Council is undermining 
the 2015 Paris Agreement by promoting coal. Take a moment to write to Rio 
Tinto and tell them it?s time to cut all ties with the Council. It?s a 
simple and effective campaign action to take, even in isolation.

      Just Recovery: Amid the COVID-19 emergency response, we?re starting to 
see Just Recovery principles put into action. Portugal will treat migrants 
as residents to ensure they have access to basic health services, and Spain 
intends to set up a permanent basic universal income to help people recover 
from the economic devastation. In Ukraine, people are opposing cuts to 
health care and education budgets that would maintain coal subsidies, while 
activists in the UK are calling for strict climate conditions on airlines. 
And this New York landlord cancelled April rent for his tenants, urging them 
to stay safe and support loved ones.

                        COVID-19 is no excuse to give up on climate action!

                        Political leaders have called on the EU to abandon 
its years-in-the-making Green Deal in favour of coronavirus bailouts for 
fossil fuel corporations and the banks that invest in them.

                        We've got just days to change minds -- and demand 
COVID-19 emergency spending that protects both the planet and the people 
living on it.

                         Sign the petition


            We can?t go back to business as usual after the COVID-19 crisis 
ends.

            A return to ?normal? means more pollution-choked skies, more 
pesticide-soaked fields, more disappearing forests? and potential 
consequences thousands of times deadlier than this pandemic.

            But not everyone understands that yet. As banks, airlines and 
fossil fuel corporations lobby for bailout money, a group of 
parliamentarians is already trying to pressure the EU to push back the Green 
Deal -- a years-in-the-making plan to slash emissions, bring back 
biodiversity, and complete a fair and just energy transition -- in order to 
"support businesses" in the wake of the coronavirus.

            The EU environment committee is meeting in just two weeks to 
discuss COVID-19 and the Green Deal. Before they destroy all the progress 
we've made, we must demand the EU use this chance to double down on its 
green goals -- by creating an emergency spending plan that invests in both 
people and the planet.

            Tell the EU: We need a green COVID-19 recovery!

            Environmental organisations have already written to the 
presidents of the European Commission, Council and Parliament with these 
demands -- now it's up to us to rally public support behind them:

              a.. Make distribution of stimulus funds and bail-outs 
conditional on consistency with the European Green Deal
              b.. Reform fiscal rules to ensure continued public investment 
in decarbonising the economy
              c.. Launch large-scale sustainable initiatives to employ 
people affected by the downturn
              d.. Accelerate EU sustainable finance policies
              e.. Limit future health crises by acting globally against 
climate change and biodiversity loss
            Add your name now -- demand a coronavirus recovery plan that 
benefits people and the planet.

            COVID-19 is testing our society like nothing else before it. And 
while some greedy corporations and governments are taking advantage of the 
upheaval to further their own selfish agendas, you and the rest of the

            We?ve already seen how your pressure helped get UK private 
hospitals to turn their beds and equipment over to the NHS, and pushed 
companies like Uber and Amazon to offer some measure of sick leave to

We sincerely hope that you can make use of this information in our urgent 
task to stop further escalation and great scale irreparable damage. Together 
we must find a way to  reach the Baltic region politicians with our message!


At the end of the attached document there are some excellent ideas that we 
could use in our work. Some examples:


- Demands aiming at a disengagement zone in the Baltic Sea, the Baltic 
States and the neighboring Finnish, Polish, German, Russian and Belarusian 
areas should be raised.


- A regional security cooperation, agreed upon at high level, regardless of 
all political contradictions and differences of opinion, should be set up.


- A high-level conference, sponsored by the Heads of States or Governments, 
within the OSCE frameweork, should be considered, a conference, that without 
preconditions and in different formats and at different levels, gives advice 
in regard to the aim of revitalizing the European security architecture,


- A sub-regional stability regime for the Baltic region should be built up 
with the task to limit military capabilities for a surprise attack or for a 
large-scale aggression after a comprehensive deployment has taken place, and 
to make military activities predictable.


- An area should be created in which both sides must de-escalate.


All ideas for how we together could bring these and other peace building 
ideas forward are warmly welcomed.

economists and academics and endorsed by numerous intellectuals, including 
Nobel-winning author Olga Tokarczuk, director Agnieszka Holland and the U.S.

Hi,

Over 200 intellectuals from Europe and beyond signed an open letter to the 
leaders of the EU urging them to take decisive action during the coronavirus 
crisis. We face a choice between a renewed Europe or authoritarianism. What 
will we choose?

The letter asks Europe to reinvent itself through a universal basic income, 
support for enterprises in keeping people employed (in exchange for shares), 
help for public services and funds for European research on medicine and 
vaccine.

It demands European solidarity, living up to European values and asks not to 
repeat the mistakes of the crisis of 2008, which gave bailouts to big banks 
and forced Europeans into a decade of austerity.

Among the signatories are economists, academics, politicians, writers, 
directors and thinkers. Their call was published on the media all over the 
world, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Le Soir and El 
Pais. [1]

Right now we must use every single tool available to us to reach the 
decision-makers in Brussels and urge them to push Europe towards a radical 
shift. This letter is already making big waves. Will you add your signature?

      Millions of euros of our tax money will be mobilised to support the 
development of highly-needed tests, treatments and vaccines to fight the 
coronavirus. But unless we act now, there is no guarantee that any medicine 
developed will be affordable and available to all of us.

      Make medicine affordable
Hi,

In a few months, treatments and vaccines for COVID-19 will reach hospitals. 
But some of us may not be able to afford them!

This might happen because the EU Health Commissioner and national health 
ministers have not done anything to stop pharmaceutical companies from 
charging high prices to healthcare systems for the drugs they develop with 
our tax money.

Right now, the European Commission and our national governments are 
mobilising millions of euros of public funds to promote research to fight 
COVID-19. [1]

With high prices for drugs, as the virus infects millions in Europe, 
healthcare systems in wealthier countries like Germany or France may have to 
choose which citizens get the treatments, while lower-income countries may 
not be able to afford treatments at all. No one should be denied treatment, 
whether it?s the elderly, migrants, the poor or the unemployed.

The EU Health Commissioner and national health ministers must put conditions 
on all COVID-19 funding: Any medicine developed must be made affordable to 
healthcare systems. [2]

During this emergency, as decision makers are working from home, our online 
pressure is especially powerful. If thousands of us sign a massive petition 
and inundate their new places of work -- Email, Twitter and Facebook -- with 
messages, our leaders will see that citizens are watching their every move. 
Together let?s call on them to put public health before private profit.

            Act now to save lives and make medicine and vaccines available 
to all


If we don?t intervene, companies that receive public money may get exclusive 
licenses to produce medicine, so that no one else can sell the same drugs or 
even get access to the medical knowledge required to produce them. This 
means pharmaceutical companies can charge excessively high prices, making it 
difficult for even the best healthcare system to buy enough drugs to make 
them available for everyone.

This has already happened in Europe for other life-saving medicine. The 
Gilead Sciences company - which came under fire for trying to get a patent 
on COVID-19 vaccines - has a monopoly on a drug to treat Hepatitis C with 
profits of over EUR 20 billion from this drug alone since 2013. [3] [4] They 
charge exorbitant prices to European healthcare systems for this drug, and 
far too many people are denied treatment for this reason. [5]

The corona crisis can help us create a model for the future: All future 
medicine developed with our public money needs to be affordable to our 
healthcare systems. Period.

It?s easy for the health commissioner and our health minister to stop 
companies exploiting this crisis. It?s up to us to give them a wake-up call.

            Ensure everyone has access to medicine and vaccines


In the past, we?ve proven that our people power can make a difference in 
protecting our health: whether it's working to increase transparency around 
pesticides in our agriculture or stopping toxic air pollution from coal 
plants in Europe. [6] [7]

Today, we have the chance to use the coronavirus pandemic as a wake-up call 
for us all. Not only do we need to make any COVID-19 treatment affordable so 
we can take care of everyone, but we need to set the precedent that our 
health needs to take priority over profit.To our health,

finally force KFC and Pizza Hut to take deforestation off their menus.

                        Please, can you use your power as a Yum! Brands 
shareholder to protect forests and people?

            If our forests die, so do we. So why are KFC and Pizza Hut still 
profiteering from forest destruction?

            Animal extinction. Uncontrollable wildfires. Global pandemics as 
bad as COVID-19 -- or worse. That's the future that Yum! Brands, the 
billionaire multinational that owns KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, is 
choosing by refusing to crack down on deforestation across its supply chain.

We've filed a shareholder proposal for Yum! Brands to be more responsible 
and transparent about sourcing palm oil, beef and other key ingredients 
linked to rainforest destruction.

            A similar proposal got over a third of shareholders' votes last

urgently need a majority at Yum!'s annual meeting on May 14. Will you use 
your shares to force the fast-food giant to act ASAP?

            Last year's vote at Yum!'s Kentucky HQ wasn't enough to win, but 
we caught execs' attention -- so much that they tried to use all their legal 
brass to silence us this year.

            But they couldn't stop our people power, and neither can 
COVID-19. Even though we can't travel to Kentucky for next month's 
shareholder meeting, we'll be there virtually to represent SumOfUs members 
and rainforests everywhere.

                              Most Americans have spent the past few weeks 
focused on staying safe and protecting their families during the coronavirus 
pandemic.

                              But the Trump Administration?s Environmental 
Protection Agency (EPA) has been working to give fossil fuel companies a 
free pass to pollute ? all at a time when we?re learning that the quality of 
the air we breathe might be the difference between life and death.

                              In fact, a recent national study from Harvard 
University found that COVID-19 patients with long-term exposure to air 
pollution have significantly higher death rates than do those with less 
consistent exposure to dirty air.

                              While the outcomes of this study are likely to 
be examined closely in the weeks and months to come, it underlines two 
things we know to be true:


                                1.. Exposure to fossil fuel pollution has 
been linked to several serious respiratory and cardiac diseases.
                                2.. Existing respiratory and cardiac illness 
are among the leading conditions tied to the worst health outcomes for 
patients with COVID-19.
                              What?s also becoming clear is that many of the 
same communities that routinely experience the impacts of the climate crisis 
first and worst are also seeing disproportionate levels of severe 
coronavirus infections and higher rates of death at its hands.





                              Take Action Now




                              The EPA has announced in just the past week 
that it would not enforce pollution regulations for fossil fuel plants and 
other facilities, nor will it seek penalties for noncompliance with routine 
monitoring and reporting obligations.

                              And along with the National Highway Transit 
Safety Administration, EPA also finalized its undermining of the fuel 
efficiency standards.

                              We know what comes next. Higher levels of air 
pollution, which more and more experts agree is increasing the amount of 
severe illness and death from COVID-19, particularly among low-income 
families and communities of color.

                              It?s injustice, plain and simple.

                              If EPA won?t honor its own mission to protect 
human health and the environment, we call on Congress to act and stop EPA 
Administrator Andrew Wheeler from putting our health in danger.

Following your support for our previous appeals for signatures on the EU 
Taxonomy, we are coming back to you with a further update and a slightly 
worrying warning.


State of Play


You may have seen that, last month, the EU's Technical Expert Group (TEG) 
published their recommendations on the EU Taxonomy of Sustainable 
Activities - see the 'Technical Annex' here.

The report is relatively science-based and it integrated quite a number of 
issues that you helped us raise last September in the previous Ten Points 
Statement. Crucially, nuclear is out, fossil fuels are out, and waste 
incineration is also out. For more detail on our reaction to the report, see 
here.


What happens now?


We have put together another, updated, 'Ten Points' text, which we will soon 
ask you to sign, so we can forward it informally to key advocacy targets 
inside the Commission.


However, the urgent thing is the Commission's consultation on the TEG 
technical recommendations, which closes next Monday 27/04. It is the last 
chance for public input before the Commission turns the criteria into the 
definitive taxonomy law (known as a delegated act). The page to submit this 
input is here.

Now for the worrying bit. The nuclear and gas lobbies have already flooded 
this consultation page with answers, demanding that nuclear be re-included, 
asking for weaker thresholds on emissions, looking for more exemptions for 
biofuels... the usual!
European environmental NGOs must respond. It is important that we send lots 
of replies: the Commission will not read these consultations in detail, but 
will instead simply look at which activities are most discussed and whether 
their criteria are broadly opposed or supported. We need to make sure the 
Commission understands that nuclear, gas, and incineration do not belong in 
the sustainable taxonomy.

      Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, kicking off a 
global online protest that will roll into online climate strikes on Friday.

      Climate strikers had originally planned street marches and disruptive 
actions across the world this week, aiming at the fossil fuel industry and 
its funders. Now they?ve changed course to help slow the spread of 
coronavirus and save lives.

      But the shake-up can?t deter us: in fact, it?s got to make our calls 
even louder for a Just Recovery that tackles inequality and the climate 
crisis together. Creative online actions and an outpouring of art and song 
are generating new shows of solidarity between students, Indigenous people, 
workers, and families hit by COVID-19.

      Tomorrow under the slogan #FightEveryCrisis, the online Global Climate 
Strike will show that even if we cannot leave our homes, we are united.

      In Case You Missed It

      Sunrise Movement founder Varshini Prakash, Naomi Klein, Joaquin 
Phoenix and Moby joined scores of other prominent activists from climate, 
labor, feminist, and racial justice movements.

      Hundreds of activists, celebrities, and scientists joined together in 
the United States with youth strikers for Earth Day Live, a 3-day 
interactive livestream running now through Friday - tune in here.

      Today is ?Divest? day, hosted by the Stop the Money Pipeline coalition 
that?s organizing to end the financing of climate destruction. Activities 
include a remote Town Hall with elected officials on People?s Bailouts, and 
a digital takeover of Chase Bank branches. People will comment on Chase?s 
Facebook profiles about how the bank is the world?s biggest fossil fuel 
funder, and why those customers will move their money elsewhere.

      Meanwhile in Nepal, activists shifted their Earth Day plans from a 
strike outside the mining department to a social media storm to challenge 
plans to drill for oil. And in the Philippines, youth strikers are holding 
an online webinar series on digital activism to keep bringing people into 
the movement. Read more.

      With lockdown extended until the end of May in Uganda, youth striker 
Vanessa Nakate had even started a podcast and video series in the lead-up to 
Earth Day. Read her story and hear from more youth strikers around the world 
on how they?ve adapted their organizing to this moment.

      Worker solidarity: There?s no doubting the economic devastation from 
coronavirus. The ILO calls it ?the worst global crisis since World War II?, 
with four out of every five workers worldwide affected by hour and wage 
cuts. For those in the informal sector and in societies without public 
safety nets, the results are catastrophic. As Workers? Day approaches on May 
1, governments must do all they can to get economic relief straight to those 
hit hardest: especially to communities of color who are often most affected 
by climate impacts and pollution.

      International Workers? Memorial Day on April 28 will honor workers 
killed, disabled, or injured by their work. We?ll be in solidarity with 
workers everywhere affected by this crisis: caretakers on the frontlines, 
transport and supermarket workers, and fossil fuel workers who've lost their

      Oil tumbles: U.S. crude oil futures crashed down below 0 
to -$38/barrel on Monday evening ? the lowest price ever. Prices have since 
jumped up, but there?s no hiding that the fossil fuel industry is hurting in 
the pandemic. ?It?s another powerful example of how fossil fuels are too 
volatile to be the basis of a resilient economy,? says Brett Fleishman from 
350.org.

      Fossil fuels are already heavily subsidized, and now the industry 
wants even more bailouts. A new study shows putting major investment in 
renewables instead could quadruple green jobs and displace the majority of 
fossil fuel emissions by 2050.

      Green Deals: 17 EU nations now support a coronavirus recovery plan 
based on a European Green Deal. And in South Korea, the incumbent party that 
campaigned on a Green New Deal won a majority to go ahead. The UN Secretary 
general advocated for green stimulus over polluter bailouts, and now 
proposals are emerging for a Global Green New Deal that would grant debt 
relief to developing countries, freeing up resources so they can support 
their own workers. It?d also coordinate large-scale investment from North to 
South in green jobs and technology, reducing inequality.

      Divestment wins: Even in these tough times, local groups are stopping 
their campaign targets from putting money into the fossil fuel industry. 
University of Guelph in Canada passed a motion for full divestment, and 
American University just dumped the last of their fossil fuel stocks. Well 
done!

      One to Watch


      We can?t gather in the streets today: but we can still stand up for 
each other and seize this opportunity for a more just society. It?s up to 
each of us to use our voice ? and right now, Peace Poets are giving us a 
chance to do just that, by participating in a global music video. Follow

      Negotiations on a European recovery plan to address the economic 
tragedy of COVID-19 are happening right now. But polluting industries are 
elbowing their way to the front of the queue to get economic support - at 
the expense of people and the planet.

Hi,

A quarter of jobs in the EU are at risk, and nearly a million jobs have been 
lost just in Spain due to the pandemic. [1] This is only a hint of the 
tragedy still to come - already here for so many of us unable to afford 
basics such as accommodation. [2]

As the European Commission puts together a recovery plan, polluting 
industries (like airlines and coal-burning power plants) are elbowing their 
way to the front of the queue to get support - thanks to their enormous 
lobbying power. They want the biggest piece of the pie? and to use this 
crisis to weaken environmental standards. [3]

This recovery plan is being negotiated right now. Let?s make it clear it 
must prioritise the tragedies of people before those of airlines, car, 
plastic, and other polluting industries. The economic recovery cannot be at 
the expense of more pollution: pollution makes coronavirus deadlier. [4]

We are part of a large coalition working on getting the message to 
politicians in different ways before the key EU meeting on Wednesday. But 
for this movement to have an impact, it needs to have thousands of Europeans 
standing behind it. That's us!

The Marshall Plan-like scheme [5] to face the economic crisis cannot 
replicate the mistakes of the bailouts following the 2008 financial crisis: 
banks and corporations shouldn?t be saved at the expense of workers, people 
and the planet.

This time it's different.

Just before coronavirus hit the world, the European Commission was in the 
midst of putting together a European Green Deal: a package of measures to 
guide Europe?s transition into a just and green economy.

The current economic downturn that will soon deepen demonstrates the 
profound need for such a package. In fact, 17 EU countries including Spain, 
Germany, France, Italy, and Portugal are already pushing the Commission to 
base the recovery plan on the Green Deal! [6] But this master plan needs to 
be not only fully executed, but also boosted and expanded.

If we don?t take action the Commission will only hear from polluting 
industries in the battle between EU governments on whether to keep the Green 
Deal or not. They need to hear from citizens too: the Green Deal is the 
starting point, but it?s far from enough.

            Sign the petition to demand people?s livelihoods are 
prioritised!


What you do after reading this email matters. This is what we've been taught 
by experienced organisations like Greenpeace and many others. It was them 
that knocked at the door of our community because, in these critical times, 
it?s the voices of citizens that are missing from what is probably the most 
crucial plan of our lives. Make the voice of people present in the recovery 
plan negotiations: take action now!

                        As United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres 
said in his argument for a global ceasefire in the face of the Coronavirus: 
"It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true 
fight of our lives."

                        This global pandemic does not discriminate and has 
been difficult to mitigate for even the most otherwise powerful and wealthy 
nations. Meanwhile, as militarism rages around the world and the most 
historically vulnerable people continue to suffer the most, many nations 
have already signed on for a global ceasefire and the lifting of sanctions. 
If nothing else, this moment is giving us a unique opportunity to step back 
and reimagine what our world could look like beyond war.

                        COMING MAY 5, 2020:

giving to mobilize support and healing for communities suffering across the

            Yum! Brands, owner of KFC and Pizza Hut, unleashed its legal 
power to try to prevent us from using our power as shareholders. But we 
stood strong and we won?t back down until rainforests are safe from the 
fast-food giant?s greed.

            Multi-billion dollar fast-food conglomerate Yum! Brands has one 
of the industry's weakest anti-deforestation policies. Its reckless sourcing 
of palm oil and other ingredients have horrific consequences for wildlife 
and the climate -- and could even spur the next global pandemic.

            Now, after all the excuses, smokescreens, and greenwashing 
attempts, Yum! will finally have to listen to us. In just three weeks, we 
have an opportunity to hold the corporation to account over its destructive 
ways -- and we urgently need your help to make sure it doesn't go to waste!

            We're crashing Yum!'s AGM to present your signatures along a 
hard hitting no-deforestation shareholder proposal. Your pressure will 
convince shareholders that deforestation is bad for business -- and force 
Yum! into long-overdue rainforest-saving action.

            Demand KFC and Pizza Hut take deforestation off their menu!

            Vladimir, deforestation for cheap fast-food ingredients has 
driven endangered animals like orangutans, pygmy elephants and Sumatran 
rhinos to the brink of extinction. It's caused devastating wildfires in the 
Amazon and Indonesia and released tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. And 
now experts are saying it might make pandemics like COVID-19 more likely to 
happen.

            And still, knowing all this, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell 
can't -- or won't -- prove their palm oil, beef, soy, and paper packaging 
are sustainably sourced. CEOs talk a green game, but who knows how many 
millions of trees are being slashed and burned behind the scenes?

            Last year, we traveled to Yum!'s Kentucky HQ to present our 
proposal for much-needed transparency on forests. When it got one in every 
three votes, Yum! responded -- by trying to ban us from doing the same thing 
this year. But our people power beat all their legal brass. Now we've got 
one more chance -- and we have to make it count.

            There's a big difference this year: the pandemic means we can't 
confront Yum!'s bosses in person. So it's extra important to have your 
signatures on our side to make the biggest impression on both shareholders 
and the board.

            Please, will you add your name to save our forests, the last 
orangutans and prevent the next pandemic?

            With nobody to hold them accountable, corporations like Yum! 
will keep exploiting our natural world to the point of collapse. It's up to 
us to show them that when rainforests burn, we all lose.

            And you've already shown you're up to the task. Pressure from 
SumOfUs members like you has gotten some of the world's most powerful 
corporations to take deforestation seriously -- like Pepsi, which radically 
overhauled its palm oil sourcing policy this year after over one million of 
you called it out. Or Lindt, which committed to an ambitious 
zero-deforestation policy for its cocoa after you and I exposed the 
rainforest destruction behind its fancy wrapping.

            With your help, KFC and Pizza Hut will finally take 
deforestation off the menu. But there isn't much time left to act. On behalf

                                The Clark Sisters Thrills with a Gospel 
Revolution

                                The Clark Sisters ? Jackie, Dorinda, Denise, 
Twinkie and Karen ? were one of the most important gospel groups of the 20th 
century. The sisters grew up in Detroit and learned to sing from their 
mother, Mattie Moss Clark, a renowned gospel singer in her own right. With 
her help, the Clark Sisters went on to win three Grammy awards and become 
the top-selling female gospel group of all time. Simply put, they changed 
the sound of modern gospel music.


                                The story of the ground-breaking group and 
the matriarch who pushed them forward is the subject of a new Lifetime movie 
called The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel. The film differs from most 
musical biopics in one notable way: Director Christine Swanson insisted that 
the women playing the sisters in the film be able to sing ? really sing. 
Acting experience was less of a requirement.

                                Smithsonian is Looking for Help Digitizing 
Historic DC-Based Black Newspaper

                                Led by the Smithsonian?s Transcription 
Center?which launched in 2014?volunteers have helped transcribe more than 
1,500 pages from collections at the National Museum of African American 
History and Culture and the Anacostia Community Museum. The collection has 
been recently digitized and added to the transcription project list. It 
includes fragile newspapers, political pamphlets, and ads for black 
entertainers from the 1930s.

                                Watching Faith Under Fire: The Antoinette 
Tuff Story

                                Seven time Grammy? Award winner Toni Braxton 
stars as Antoinette Tuff, a struggling single mom from Georgia who 
heroically averted a tragedy, saving hundreds of lives when she convinced a 
deranged gunman who stormed an elementary school to surrender. On August 20, 
2013, shortly after arriving to work at the Ronald E. McNair Discovery 
Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia, Antoinette the school?s bookkeeper, 
was in the front office when Michael Hill (Trevor Morgan, ?Abducted?), a 
young man with a history of mental illness, snuck in, armed with an AK-47 
and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. As the school went into lockdown, 
Antoinette was left alone with Michael, who repeatedly threatened to kill 
everyone. Showing enormous courage and empathy, along with nerves of steel, 
Antoinette convinced Michael to surrender by using her own life struggles to 
connect with him. Antoinette?s faith in God guided her through the toughest 
moments of her life, ultimately preparing her for that fateful day.

                                North America?s 17th Century Black 
Settlements


                                The text below is excerpted from the About 
Us section of the Seneca Village Montessori School website 
(senecavillagemontessori.com).


                                The story of Seneca Village begins in 1825, 
when Andrew Williams and Epiphany Davis became the first African Americans 
to purchase land in the area, which stretched from West 82nd to West 85th 
streets between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. Within a week of these initial 
purchases, the Trustees of the AME Zion Church purchased eight lots of 
nearby land. By 1829, nine relatively substantial houses had been built in 
the area.


                                Several Seneca Village property owners, 
including Albro Lyons, Levin Smith and S. Hardenburgh, were prominent in the 
abolitionist movement.


                                The village was built in a desirable 
location, with proximity to the Hudson River?s ample fishing opportunities 
and to a natural source of clean water at a nearby spring. The village?s 
residences ranged from one-room homes to three-story dwellings made of wood 
and brick, and there are records of three churches and one school in the 
village as well. The 1855 census indicated that Seneca Village was home to 
approximately 250 residents and contained 70 houses. Life in Seneca Village 
was rural and its distance from the bustling streets of Lower Manhattan 
offered its residents a peaceful life.
