People deserve to know where their food comes from, but a legal loophole is letting food giants lie to us by mislabeling their products. By joining this European Citizens Initiative we can force a change in the rules and put an end to this food fraud for good. Sign now:

Imagine buying eggs that you thought were locally sourced, only to find out that they had come from the other side of the world. Suddenly your eco-friendly choice is not so good for the environment, or your local farmer. [1]
A legal loophole is letting food giants label products as if they are made locally when they aren’t - it’s food fraud and it’s hurting us, farmers and food producers. [2] But we now have a chance to change the rules.
WeMove Europe is working with other organisations to force the European Commission to put the correct country of origin on all food sold in Europe. [3] A million people signing an official EU petition, called a European Citizen Initiative (ECI), would mean decision-makers are legally obliged to respond to our demands. We’ve done this successfully once before on glyphosate, and we can do it again on food labelling. [4] Sign now to put an end to this food fraud:

Knowing where our food comes from is important for so many reasons: it allows us to support local farmers, gives us some indication if the food was produced in season and the food miles involved, and for those of us concerned about animal welfare and farming practices in certain countries, it allows us to make better choices.
Right now there isn't a mandatory requirement to put the country of origin on all foods bought in the EU, and companies are exploiting this to mislabel food. The ECI is the only tool that allows ordinary Europeans to have a direct and formal say in EU decision-making. So far, partners have been able to gather 900,000 signatures - together we could tip this over the edge, and get it to the one million needed to secure a response.
Because this is an official EU petition, the signing is a two-step process, and it’ll need a little more information than usual (e.g. your place of residence and date of birth). But it shouldn’t take more than a minute or two. We’re almost there - sign the petition for better food labelling now:
Yes, I'll sign the petition
With determination,
Fatima (London), Virginia (Madrid), Alex (Marseille), and the entire WeMove Europe team.
