The government crisis in Romania hasn’t stopped us: the logging of the virgin forests must cease and we will continue pushing for it in Romania and in the EU.
Please find below an update about the petition “Romania – save Europe’s last large virgin forests!” which was launched on our YouMove platform by EuroNatur and Agent Green. Thank you again for signing it! -- WeMove team
Hi,
Romania’s virgin forests: International pressure is growing
A strong statement of support for the virgin forests of the Carpathian mountains: already more than 110,000 citizens from all over the world have signed our petition for the protection of the Romanian paradise forests. In 2017, the international conservation foundation EuroNatur and their Romanian partner organisation Agent Green launched the campaign ‘Save Paradise Forests’. Together we are fighting against the destruction of the last remaining large tracks of virgin forest in the EU. As Romania was president of the European Council in the first half of 2019, and thus very much in the limelight, EuroNatur and Agent Green launched a petition on the YouMove platform.
It was actually planned to present the list of signatures to senior government officials at the beginning of September. However, Bucharest is currently in a state of political chaos. In August, the coalition collapsed and a number of ministers, among them the environment minister, had to leave their posts. It would not have been worthwhile to deliver the petition, this powerful public statement, in such chaotic circumstances. As soon as there is a stable government in Bucharest again, we will hand in the petition - with hopefully even more signatures. You can invite your friends to sign and share the petition.
However, the work of EuroNatur and Agent Green does not stop there. Together with the legal experts of ClientEarth they have filed a complaint against the Romanian authorities with the European Commission. The goal is to stop the wilful destruction of the paradise forests. The nature conservation organisations hope the European Commission will act on their complaint and, if the felling continues, initiate infringement proceedings. Should there still be no movement from Romania, they anticipate that the Commission will bring an action before the European Court of Justice.
There is therefore still cause for hope. You can find out what happens next in the fight for Romania’s paradise forests by clicking on this link: https://www.saveparadiseforests.eu/en/home-2/
Thank you!
