Dear CAN,
While folks are busy in Bonn, there's also a lot happening this week on the G20, Japan, and coal. Partners and allies around the world are organizing actions and events to ramp up pressure on the Japanese government to demonstrate real climate leadership and end its support for coal. There are also efforts to pressure G20 governments more broadly to stop funding fossil fuels.
Here’s some of what’s taking place – any help with amplification would be greatly appreciated.
Note: There were already some great actions this past week. Check out the twitter accounts @NoCoalJapan, @AsianPeoplesMvt, and @350EastAsia for more. You can also follow #NoCoalJapan and #StopFundingCoal.
Today (or yesterday for most of you now! - Tuesday):
A new report was just released today focused on G20 coal subsidies and lays out how much support coal is still getting from G20 governments (it’s a lot).
Report link: odi.org/g20-coal-subsidies
a.. Sample Tweets:
a.. 10 years on from committing to phase out harmful #fossilfuel subsidies, our new research reveals #G20 governments provide at least US$64 billion/year in supporting #coal alone. This week’s #G20OsakaSummit is a time to finally move #beyondcoal: odi.org/g20-coal-subsidies #G20coal
b.. Japan’s Prime Minister @AbeShinzo wants to be a climate leader – but Japanese public finance institutions are still among the world’s largest supporters of coal-fired power plants. Read more in this new study: odi.org/g20-coal-subsidies/japan #NoCoalJapan #G20coal
There was also a great action at the Japanese embassy in Manila organized by 350.org featuring Pikachu costumes:

Wednesday, June 27 & 28:
Women-led Day of Action at Japanese embassies across the globe organized by APMDD, 350.org, members of the Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice, with support from Market Forces, OCI/FoE US and more. And an action in Japan at the planned Yokosuka coal plant site organized by Kiko Network, FoE Japan, JACSES and 350.org Japan.
a.. Follow #NoCoalJapan and #StopFundingCoal on twitter for content to amplify throughout the day.
b.. Sample Tweets:
a.. There’s no room for more coal power if we want to meet #climate goals. @AbeShinzo, use this opportunity as host of the #G20OsakaSummit to end Japanese coal finance now. #NoCoalJapan www.nocoaljapan.org
b.. Activists are organizing protests across Asia, in Australia and the US to urge the Japanese government to end support for coal. @AbeShinzo, use the #G20OsakaSummit to show true climate leadership and stop undermining global action to address the climate crisis. #NoCoalJapan
Thursday & Friday:
Actions related to Japanese coal finance happening in Kobe and Osaka (Japan), including a major petition delivery. Organized by Kiko Network, FoE Japan, JACSES and 350.org Japan. And actions at the MUFG offices organized by APMDD.
a.. Accounts to Amplify: @NoCoalJapan, @FoEJapan, @350_Japan, @SumOfUs, @KikoNetwork, @AsianPeoplesMvt
b.. Hashtag to follow: #NoCoalJapan
Hopefully that’s useful when looking for content to amplify leading up to this year’s G20 summit. And please do respond with anything else that’s worth keeping an eye on or we can help amplify.
Thank you,
Alex Doukas
