Hi,
Let’s celebrate! These past months have been super busy for our community.
Just take a look at how much we can achieve when we come together:
Not leaving the nest - the birds are staying!
Pelicans and flamingos will keep their resting place in the beautiful site
of Ulcinj Salina in Montenegro.
EuroNatur activists with their YouMove petition
This campaign lasted for 15 years! That’s how long conservation group
EuroNatur and allies fought to protect the unique former salina (salt pan)
on the Adriatic coast, where migratory birds rest during their journeys. The
government of Montenegro was about to allow the construction of a luxury
tourist resort there. After years of advocacy, the activists launched a
petition on our YouMove platform and over 110,000 people from across Europe
supported it. [1] The pressure on the Montenegrin government mounted.
Then came the amazing news! On June 24th, the town council of Ulcinj
designated the salina a nature park. In addition, the EU made protection of
this Adriatic saltern a precondition for Montenegro’s EU accession. [2] This
could not have happened without your help.
Billions of Euros returned to the Greek people
Our partners deliver the petition to the Eurozone’s Presidency spokesperson
[3]
The crisis of the eurozone does not make dramatic headlines anymore, but we
haven’t forgotten the devastation it’s causing. Since the beginning of 2018,
together with our partners, Eurodad and Positive Money, we've fought for
eurozone countries to pay the profit made on Greek bonds back to the Greek
people. [4]
Before the Eurogroup meeting in April, we received a letter from its
President who acknowledged our petition, supported by 145,000 of you -- and
at the meeting, they decided to disburse another 1 billion euros to the
Greek people - and chances are that this process will continue, as will our
campaign! [5]
Welfare for farm animals in Europe - a rollercoaster of hope and
disappointment
Pigs on a farm
In Europe, we are keeping many farm animals in intolerable conditions. The
farming industry uses mass medication which spreads antimicrobial
resistance. [6] Mass production of meat kills biodiversity and produces
greenhouse gases. [7]
This is why, together with our partners from EEB and MESFA, we launched a
massive campaign to deeply transform Europe’s agricultural policy. We have
many demands, including maximum stock density on farms, a safeguard to
maintain permanent grassland, and a ban on meat advertising with taxpayers’
money. [9]
At first, the European Parliament gave us a lot of hope, but it was soon
destroyed. In March, one of the committees agreed to most of our demands,
but by April we had lost. [10] Despite massive pressure from our community,
the committee members chose to cave to the farming lobby instead of
supporting animals and the planet.
But its not over -- the final battle is still ahead of us! The rules for
Europe’s agricultural policy will be voted on this autumn. We'll continue to
fight, grow this movement and develop new tactics to take on this powerful
lobby.
More to come!
Vladimir, this is just a small part of what the WeMove community has been
doing over the past months. We’ll keep updating you! Meanwhile, could you
contribute to keep our work going? WeMove is funded by its community, so all
the campaigns here depend on your generosity.
WeMove is doing a great job, I’ll donate!
Thank you!
Marta (Warsaw), Joerg (Luebeck), Fatima (London), and the entire WeMove team
