These past months have been super busy for our community. Just take a look at how much we can achieve when we come together: Not leaving the nest - the birds are staying! Pelicans and flamingos will keep their resting place in the beautiful site of Ulcinj Salina in Montenegro. EuroNatur activists with their YouMove petition This campaign lasted for 15 years! That?s how long conservation group EuroNatur and allies fought to protect the unique former salina (salt pan) on the Adriatic coast, where migratory birds rest during their journeys. The government of Montenegro was about to allow the construction of a luxury tourist resort there. After years of advocacy, the activists launched a petition on our YouMove platform and over 110,000 people from across Europe supported it. [1] The pressure on the Montenegrin government mounted. Then came the amazing news! On June 24th, the town council of Ulcinj designated the salina a nature park. In addition, the EU made protection of this Adriatic saltern a precondition for Montenegro?s EU accession. [2] This could not have happened without your help. Billions of Euros returned to the Greek people Our partners deliver the petition to the Eurozone?s Presidency spokesperson [3] The crisis of the eurozone does not make dramatic headlines anymore, but we haven?t forgotten the devastation it?s causing. Since the beginning of 2018, together with our partners, Eurodad and Positive Money, we've fought for eurozone countries to pay the profit made on Greek bonds back to the Greek people. [4] Before the Eurogroup meeting in April, we received a letter from its President who acknowledged our petition, supported by 145,000 of you -- and at the meeting, they decided to disburse another 1 billion euros to the Greek people - and chances are that this process will continue, as will our campaign! [5] Welfare for farm animals in Europe - a rollercoaster of hope and disappointment Pigs on a farm In Europe, we are keeping many farm animals in intolerable conditions. The farming industry uses mass medication which spreads antimicrobial resistance. [6] Mass production of meat kills biodiversity and produces greenhouse gases. [7] This is why, together with our partners from EEB and MESFA, we launched a massive campaign to deeply transform Europe?s agricultural policy. We have many demands, including maximum stock density on farms, a safeguard to maintain permanent grassland, and a ban on meat advertising with taxpayers? money. [9] At first, the European Parliament gave us a lot of hope, but it was soon destroyed. In March, one of the committees agreed to most of our demands, but by April we had lost. [10] Despite massive pressure from our community, the committee members chose to cave to the farming lobby instead of supporting animals and the planet. But its not over -- the final battle is still ahead of us! The rules for Europe?s agricultural policy will be voted on this autumn. We'll continue to fight, grow this movement and develop new tactics to take on this powerful lobby. More to come! Vladimir, this is just a small part of what the WeMove community has been doing over the past months. We?ll keep updating you! Meanwhile, could you contribute to keep our work going? WeMove is funded by its community, so all the campaigns here depend on your generosity. WeMove is doing a great job, I?ll donate! Thank you! The Convention promotes good land stewardship. Its 197 Parties aim, through partnerships, to implement the Convention and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The end goal is to protect our land, from over-use and drought, so it can continue to provide us all with food, water and energy. By sustainably managing land and striving to achieve land degradation neutrality, now and in the future, we will reduce the impact of climate change, avoid conflict over natural resources and help communities to thrive. We cannot head off the worst ravages of climate change without action on land degradation. The knowledge and technologies to manage our lands sustainably already exist. All we need is the will to use them to draw down carbon from the atmosphere, protect vital ecosystems and meet the challenge of feeding a growing global population. We must harness the enormous positive potential of our lands and make them part of the climate solution. With the help of our scientists, I will ensure the issues in this report that are within the scope of the Convention are presented to ministers for strong and decisive action when they meet at the world?s largest intergovernmental forum where decisions on land use and management are made, the 14th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNCCD, taking place in New Delhi, India, in three weeks? time. The IPCC report is one of four major assessments released over the last two years that show the wide-ranging impacts of land degradation. It is not just the climate that suffers when land quality declines. Land degradation jeopardizes our ability to feed the word, threatens the survival of over a million species, destroys ecosystems and drives resource-related conflicts that demand costly international interventions. These problems are no longer local problems. The report underlines that the increasingly global flows of consumption and production means that what we eat in one country can impact land in another. In the wake of land degradation and drought, communities are breaking down due to the swift and devastating loss of life and livelihoods. Faced with these life-changing consequences, the UNCCD has developed a robust policy framework that can enable countries to avoid further land degradation and recover land that has become virtually unusable. Change is happening, but not fast enough. In the last four years, 122 of the 169 countries affected by desertification, land degradation or drought have embarked on setting national targets to halt future degradation and rehabilitate degrading land to ensure the amount of healthy and productive land available in 2015 does not decline by 2030 and beyond. Last year, these countries submitted baseline date to verify this achievement. And in just three years, close to 70 countries have set up national drought management plans to reduce community and ecosystem vulnerability to droughts, which the IPCC says will become stronger, more frequent and more widespread. This shows that commitment to reversing land degradation is growing, even though much work remains. More than two billion hectares of land are degraded. Initiatives to restore land on a national or landscape level are not only vital in reversing the process. They are critical for helping the global community mitigate and adapt to climate change in the short term, using soil and vegetations through methods that do not harm the Earth. When the ministers meet in September, I expect the IPCC report to have a strong influence not only on the policy decisions they will debate, but the will to take them home for appropriate action. Science can help politicians develop informed policies that will support ordinary people to prepare, act and create more positive pathways to the future. --- ends --- Ibrahim Thiaw, UN Under Secretary General and Executive Secretary to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. It helps people, communities and countries create wealth, grow economies and secure enough food, clean water and energy by ensuring land users an enabling environment for sustainable land management. Through partnerships, the Convention?s 197 parties set up robust systems to manage drought promptly and effectively. Good land stewardship based on sound policy and science helps integrate and accelerate achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, builds resilience to climate change and prevents biodiversity loss. Malta and Italy, the nearest countries, have refused to let them dock. After 8 days at sea in the sweltering heat, the conditions on the boat are becoming unbearable. The Spanish organisation, Open Arms, who owns the ship has issued a desperate call to European leaders to let them dock - they?re quickly running out of fuel and supplies. [1] Let?s stand in solidarity with them and show our leaders that Europe?s arms are open: Click to say: Let them dock! Europe?s migration system is broken - it has failed to bring justice to the Mediterranean, leaving it a graveyard for those seeking safety. And when NGOs and activists have tried to intervene, offering a lifeline to those in need, they?ve been blocked at every turn. [2] Just this week, Italy passed a law that threatens captains of rescue vessels with fines of up to ?1 million if they enter ports without permission - and when it comes to it, permission is hardly granted. [3] But Europe is more than its leaders - every time politicians fail, people across this continent stand up and extend their arms. Our solidarity has brought hundreds of people to safety before, now let?s do it again: Click to say: Let them dock! Shortly after we and movements like ours stood with Carola Rackete, the heroic Sea-Watch 3 captain who rescued 40 refugees was arrested in Italy, she was freed. [4] This is what our voices united can do! Together we're powerful. In solidarity, Fatima (London), Olga (Bologna), Virginia (Madrid), and the WeMove Europe team P.S Right now four Spanish regions ? Extremadura, Valencia, the Basque Country and Catalonia ? have offered to receive the migrants. [5] But without a European-wide call of support, there?s a risk they?ll be ignored. Land is already under growing human pressure and climate change is adding to these pressures. At the same time, keeping hlobal warming to well below 2?C can be achieved only by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors including land and food. Roughly 500 million people live in areas that experience desertification. Drylands and areas that experience desertification are also more vulnerable to climate change and extreme events including drought, heatwaves, and dust storms, with an increasing global population providing further pressure. The report sets out options to tackle land degradation, and prevent or adapt to further climate change. It also examines potential impacts from different levels of global warming. In these countries, agriculture, industry, and municipalities are drinking up 80 percent of available surface and groundwater in an average year. When demand rivals supply, even small dry shocks ? which are set to increase due to climate change ? can produce dire consequences. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, home to 12 of the 17 countries facing ?extremely high? stress, experts have pinpointed water scarcity as a force that can exacerbate conflict and migration. The UN Secretary-General has just written to EU leaders asking them to step up their efforts, let?s supercharge his call and demand that they act now. SIGN HERE Hi, Temperatures are soaring to historic highs this summer - ravaged by drought, wildfires are raging from France to Poland. [1] This climate breakdown has even set the Arctic on fire!! [2] Scientists are warning that this will be the new normal unless our leaders start acting like there?s an emergency. [3] Next month, world leaders are meeting in New York to put forward ambitious commitments to tackle the climate crisis - right now the EU is lagging behind and planning to go empty-handed! [4] This would be a massive blow to global efforts and put us on course to catastrophe. Now is the perfect time to push for serious climate action. The UN Secretary-General has just written to the EU with an urgent ask that they get serious and show desperately needed leadership. [5] Together we can supercharge his call and demand that our leaders cancel their summer vacations to hold an emergency climate summit to deal with this crisis: Click to demand an emergency climate summit Yes, the Arctic is on fire. No, this is not science fiction. This is life on our planet right now, and it?s about to get a whole lot worse if governments don?t start taking radical action. The world is looking to Europe - with Trump pulling out of the Paris agreement, and Brazil?s Bolsonaro taking a chainsaw to the Amazon - global leadership is needed to steer us away from further climate breakdown. [6] [7] And there is hope. Last month, Finland assumed the presidency of the EU, and they?re committed to making climate action a hallmark of their presidency. In fact, the Finish prime minister said he wants to turn the EU into a climate hero. [8] That - along with hundreds of new MEPs entering the Parliament on a ?green wave? - means we?ve never been in a better position to push for serious climate action. So let?s call our leaders back from their holidays and demand they meet urgently to form a plan to take on this climate emergency. Click to demand an emergency climate summit This community has always come together around climate change - it threatens everything we love, and it?s going to take all of us to keep fighting to build a future that puts people and planet first. You don?t have to. As a European you can help stop the blaze! The Amazon is being burned for the sake of cheap meat. A disastrous EU-Brazil trade deal will make it worse. Halt the Mercosur negotiations now! SIGN NOW! Hi Vladimir, The burning of the Amazon is out of control. And it's being set on fire for cheap meat. As Europeans, we can help! The EU is negotiating a trade deal with South America, similar to TTIP, called Mercosur. For the right-wing Brazilian President Bolsonaro it is a very big deal to get it signed. The EU should halt the negotiations until Brazil?s Amazon fires are stopped and human rights violations are addressed. SIGN to help save the Amazon. With the blessing of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, illegal loggers are mounting an all-out assault on our planet?s ?green lung?. First they cut down the trees, then they burn the land and use it for agriculture. They are destroying its vital carbon stores, and the hundreds of thousands of species who call it home. All to help the meat industry. [1] And Europe is about to add fuel to the fire! The EU is talking about signing a ?new TTIP? with South America: Mercosur. It is a deal to import cheap beef, soy, wood and other products grown on the Amazon?s ashes. Mercosur is president Bolsonaro?s pride and joy. And he knows the stakes are huge: The EU is Brazil?s second largest trade partner. Mercosur has been negotiated for over 20 years and free trade worshipper Bolsonaro boasts about how he will get it signed. [2] With the negotiations still open, the EU has a powerful way to put pressure on Bolsonaro to save the Amazon. As Europeans, we must mobilise immediately and in huge numbers, and tell our leaders to instantly halt the Mercosur negotiations. SIGN to stop the EU-Mercosur trade deal! The trade deal between the EU and Mercosur -- aka Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay -- would allow commodities from those countries to be fast-tracked into Europe, fattening corporate pockets on both sides. The politicians behind the deal claim it includes a ?commitment to tackle deforestation? -- but over 600 scientists, two Brazilian indigenous organisations and 340 civil society groups are calling foul. [3] Europe must not reward Bolsonaro and his corporate cronies for the unspeakable rainforest and climate devastation that has occurred since he took office just eight months ago. Deforestation isn?t the only reason we should be worried about the Mercosur agreement. If it passes, Europe will be importing a whole lot more fruit and veg treated with banned pesticides. [4] Thanks to Bolsonaro?s loosened regulations, megacorporations like Syngenta have been churning out chemicals in Brazil that they aren?t allowed to make here. They?re sprayed all over crops that could soon reach our supermarket shelves ? unless we block this deal right now. SIGN for the health of our planet Can ordinary people like you and me really make a difference in halting a years-in-the-making treaty between world superpowers? Of course we can! Remember TTIP? When the EU and US were on the verge of signing an agreement that would?ve flooded Europe with hormone-treated meat and GMO produce, people like you joined a three-million-strong citizens? movement to stop it -- and your pressure got the deal called off. Now, we?ve got to push back against Mercosur and convince the new, greener European Parliament and the new European leaders who declare they want to fight for climate that there can be no deal as long as the Amazon is burning. Thank you! Marta (Warsaw), Andrew (Amsterdam), Fatima (London) and the entire WeMove Europe team PS Italy, Ireland, and France have already voiced doubts about Mercosur [5] -- an avalanche of public opposition could tip the scales and turn all of Europe against this dangerous new partnership. Mary Altaffer/AP hide caption toggle caption Mary Altaffer/AP Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish climate activist, arrived in New York Wednesday aboard a boat rather than a plane to emphasize the need to reduce carbon-emission damage to the planet. Mary Altaffer/AP Updated at 8:15 p.m. ET After a two-week journey sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg arrived in New York on Wednesday at a marina in Lower Manhattan. Thunberg stepped off the emission-free racing yacht that brought her and held a news conference a few minutes later, saying, "The ground is still shaking for me." Nevertheless, Thunberg says she didn't feel seasick once during the trip, despite rough weather that delayed her arrival one day. Asked if she had a message for President Trump, who has expressed skepticism about the science behind climate change, Thunberg said, "If no one has been able to convince him about the climate crisis ? the urgency ? then why should I be able to do that?" Thunberg said she hopes, instead, to spread awareness among Americans about what she calls "the climate crisis." The teenage activist, known for promoting school strikes by climate-aware students, says she plans to rest for a few days and looks forward to eating fresh, instead of freeze-dried, food again. She plans to join other activists for a climate protest in front of the United Nations on Friday. Thunberg is in the U.S. for the United Nations Climate Action Summit and says she sailed to avoid the greenhouse gas emissions that come with flying on a commercial jet. Thunberg documented her journey on social media, including posts in rough seas with waves crashing over her. Thunberg says she first learned about climate change when she was 8 years old and became very concerned about the future of humanity. At age 11, she says, she was depressed and stopped talking and eating. "Later on I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, OCD and selective mutism," she told a crowd gathered for a 2018 TED Talk in Stockholm. "That basically means I only speak when I think it's necessary. Now is one of those moments." On Aug. 20, 2018, Thunberg began skipping school and protesting by herself outside Sweden's parliament. She called it a school strike and demanded that adults do more about climate change. "I handed out fliers with a long list of facts about the climate crisis and explanations on why I was striking," she said in a Facebook post. She talked about her strike on Twitter and Instagram, and protests quickly spread. Now, just one year later, students hold hundreds of school strikes every Friday around the world. Thunberg also has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, addressed the United Nations climate conference in Poland and met Pope Francis. The teenager has a knack for making the complicated issue of climate change sound simple. For that she credits being on the autism spectrum, calling it a gift because it helps her see issues more starkly. "If burning fossil fuels was so bad that it threatened our very existence, how could we just continue like before? Why were there no restrictions? Why wasn't it made illegal?" she asked in her TED Talk. Thunberg's activism has attracted critics. Conservative French lawmakers boycotted a speech by Thunberg this summer and mocked her as a "prophetess in shorts." One critic even referred to Thunberg's diagnoses. Australian conservative columnist Andrew Bolt, in a Herald Sun blog post, wrote, "No teenager is more freakishly influential than Greta Thunberg, the deeply disturbed messiah of the global warming movement." Thunberg shot back on Twitter, "I am indeed 'deeply disturbed' about the fact that these hate and conspiracy campaigns are allowed to go on and on and on just because we children communicate and act on the science." Still, many teenagers around the globe are attracted to Thunberg's message, and they are showing up in the streets. Last March, students around the world staged a climate strike modeled on Thunberg's school strike. Just about every U.S. state had an event, even in politically conservative areas. Freddy Finney-Jordet, 17, organized a protest on a street corner in downtown Bend, Ore. He says he was inspired by Thunberg's determination. "She kind of looks in the camera and has this look of, 'I'm doing this. Nobody can stop me,' " Finney-Jordet says. Before last spring, gun control and LGBTQ issues were his priorities. "After that protest, which at first I thought was going to be kind of a one-off thing for me, I started taking a look at exactly how severe the climate crisis was, and that's been my focus ever since," he says. Thunberg's fans will be watching as she joins protests connected to the U.N. Climate Action Summit and then addresses the summit. She also plans to visit Canada and Mexico before traveling to Chile for a climate conference in December. Thunberg's family says she's taking a sabbatical from school this year to focus on her climate activism. Listen To The Latest From NPR a.. I am sure you know the Narmada struggle. It's in a bit critical stage, with its lead activist Medha Patkar sitting on indefinite fast, entering its 6th day today. Some details are available in the appended press note. We were wondering whether RwB could issue a short statement in solidarity, demanding that people's rehabilitation must be given importance? Hope you will consider this positively. Thank you in advance. Chhota Badda (Barwani) | The fast of Ms. Medha Patkar under the "Narmada Challan Satyagraha" continued for the fifth day today. The Chief Minister of the State urged Ms. Patkar to end the fast, which was rejected in the absence of a concrete plan to rehabilitate the affected. Today, 10 affected people of Bhavati, Bijasan, Ganpur, Chhota Badda, Rajghat and Gangli have also started indefinite fast, to strengthen the ongoing struggle. It is worth mentioning that indefinite satyagraha began on the 25 August 2019 in Chhota Badda in Barwani district against rehabilitation illegal drowning. Due to the insensitivity of the Center and the Government of Gujarat, thousands of families in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat are forced to face drowning without policy-driven rehabilitation. The Narmada Control Authority (NCA), a central government agency, is deliberately trying to drown the peasant-tribal, Kewat-Kahar, cattle herders, potters, landless laborers without rehabilitation by increasing the water level. At present, rehabilitation of 32 thousand affected people is remaining in Madhya Pradesh itself. Hundreds of families in Maharashtra and Gujarat are also waiting to be rehabilitated. In this way, it is unacceptable to risk the lives of millions of people living in the submerged area. Although the Kamal Nath government of Madhya Pradesh has started a process of dialogue with the movement, the Gujarat government and the NCA ? who ordered to raise the water level ? have not responded to the clear mass-killing effort being done in this planned manner. Yesterday, the State Home Minister Shri Bala Bachchan had reached Chhota Barda, urging Ms. Patkar to end her fast and promised to take action on the demands of the satyagrahis. After this late in the evening, Chief Minister Mr. Kamal Nath himself spoke to Ms. Patkar and requested her to end the hunger strike. Ms. Patkar refused both requests as both leaders did not make a firm point of controlling the water level to a certain level so that the affected families could reside safely in their villages till rehabilitation. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh authorities continue to spread lies about the rescue operation. Mr. Klesh, SDM of Kukshi, has claimed to save more people than the total number of affected. However, the authorities are forcibly evacuating the affected from the villages in the name of rescue operations. The central and Gujarat governments remain silent on this humanitarian tragedy. But the Prime Minister has also crossed all limits of decency. The Prime Minister tweeted that Sardar Sarovar's water level reached 134 meters and asked the countrymen to enjoy the beautiful view. This tweet of the Prime Minister is like sprinkling salt on the wounds of 32 thousand families of Narmada Valley without being rehabilitated. Such irresponsible behavior was not expected from the Prime Minister of the country. The movement demands that - ? The water level of Sardar Sarovar should be kept constant at 122 meters till rehabilitation of all the 32 thousand affected is completed as per policy. ? The permission granted by the NCA to fill the dam to full reservoir level of 138.68 meters should be kept in abeyance until all the affected are rehabilitated. ? The affected population of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat should be rehabilitated by providing complete civic amenities and means of livelihood before submergence. ? All data and documents related to rehabilitation should be made public on the website so that new corruption can be curbed. ? Rehabilitation, environmental protection and other expenses should be recovered from the Government of Gujarat. ? The Satyagrahis resolved that if the government continued to increase the Narmada water level, the struggle would be further intensified. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Michael Mann?s Tree-Ring Circus By Daniel John Sobieski, AMERICAN THINKER This has been a tough week for climate hustler Michael Mann, who lost his defamation and libel lawsuit against respected climatologist and warming skeptic Dr. Tim Ball at the same time it was announced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that there has been no U.S. warming since 2005. Mann, who poses as a climatologist at Penn State, has had his court case against genuine climate scientist Dr. Tim Ball dismissed, with Mann ordered to pay court costs, for failure to produce supporting evidence to prove his claim that global temperatures took a sharp upward turn when the Industrial Revolution and fossil-fuel use began pouring CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. He didn?t because he can?t, and the fact is that the global warning he speaks of is Mann-made, a fantasy based on a career of perpetrating climate fraud, as indicated by NOAA?s report that there hasn?t been any U.S. warming for nearly a decade and a half and maybe even beyond that. As noted by James Taylor, director of the Arthur B. Robinson Center for Climate and Environmental Policy at the Heartland Institute, in a piece for Real Clear Energy: When American climate alarmists claim to have witnessed the effects of global warming, they must be referring to a time beyond 14 years ago. That is because there has been no warming in the United States since at least 2005, according to updated data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). https://www.israpundit.org/national-oceanic-and-atmospheric-administration-noaa-there-has-been-no-u-s-warming-since-2005/?utm_source=phplist4341&utm_medium=email&utm_content=HTML&utm_campaign=ISRAPUNDIT+DAILY+DIGEST+Aug+29%2F19 In January 2005, NOAA began recording temperatures at its newly built U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN). USCRN includes 114 pristinely maintained temperature stations spaced relatively uniformly across the lower 48 states. NOAA selected locations that were far away from urban and land-development impacts that might artificially taint temperature readings? There is also good reason to believe U.S. temperatures have not warmed at all since the 1930s. Raw temperature readings at the preexisting stations indicate temperatures are the same now as 80 years ago. All of the asserted U.S. warming since 1930 is the product of the controversial adjustments made to the raw data. The use of properly positioned temperature recording stations coupled with satellite date, a relatively recent innovation that covers the whole earth, has given us a more realistic picture than computer models that can?t even predict the past and fraudulently manipulate raw data from dubious sources. Meteorologist Anthony Watts documented the inaccuracy of old weather station data used by NASA on hisSurfaceStations.org website. Watts said that ?90 percent of them don?t meet (the government?s) old, simple rule called the ?100-foot rule? for keeping thermometers 100 feet or more from biasing influence.? Many of the U.S. stations were in locations such as paved driveways, near rooftop exhaust vents, even near idling jet engines. In 2016, Mann testified before the Democratic Platform Drafting Committeethat actual data didn?t really matter because we could actually see climate change happening. The Washington Times noted both his appearance and at least one contradiction to his claims based, not on computer models, but on actual empirical observation: Leading climate doomsayer Michael Mann recently downplayed the importance of climate change science, telling Democrats that data and models ?increasingly are unnecessary? because the impact is obvious? Mr. Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University, spoke before the committee June 17 in Phoenix? Mr. Mann told the panel that ?the signal of climate change is no longer subtle, it is obvious,? citing hurricanes, flooding in Texas and South Carolina, the California drought and ?record heat? in Arizona. Skeptics have hotly challenged the link between rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and ?extreme weather? events, noting, for example, that hurricane activity is on the decline. A nine-year ?hurricane drought? of Category 3 storms starting in 2006 beat the previous mark of eight years from 1861-1868, the longest such streak since such recording began in 1851, according to a May 2015 study by the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Mann has proven adept over his career at making controversial, no, fraudulent adjustments made to the raw data. Mann might be remembered as one of the participants in what Investor?s Business Daily dubbed a ?tree-ring circus? ? the Climategate scandal. As IBD noted at the time: Mann was at the heart of the Climate-gate scandal in 2009, when emails were unearthed from Britain?s Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia. In one email sent to Mann and others, CRU director Philip Jones speaks of the ?trick? of filling in gaps of data in order to hide evidence of temperature decline: ?I?ve just completed Mike?s nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e. from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith?s to hide the decline (in global temperatures),? the email read. It was that attempt to ?hide the decline? through the manipulation of data that helped bring down the global warming house of cards. The graph created by professor Mann and his colleagues carefully selected and manipulated tree-ring data to supposedly prove that air temperatures had been stable for 900 years, then soared off the charts ? in a pattern resembling a hockey stick ? in the 20th century due to man-made greenhouse gases. Mann et al. performed the neat trick of making the Medieval Warm Period (about A.D. 800 to 1400) and the Little Ice Age (A.D. 1600 to 1850) statistically disappear. As Investor?s Business Daily also noted: The graph relied on data from trees on the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia. Here, too, the results were carefully selected. Just 12 trees from the 252 cores in the CRU?s Yamal data set were used. A larger data set of 34 tree cores from the vicinity showed no dramatic recent warming, and warmer temperatures in the middle ages. They were not included. ?Hiding the decline? and any actual evidence that global warming hype was nothing more an attempt by climate change scammers to impose what has become a religion. MIT Professor Richard Lindzen is quoted in the Daily Callerquestioning the tenets of this new religion: Throughout history, governments have twisted science to suit a political agenda. Global warming is no different, according to Dr. Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. ?Global climate alarmism has been costly to society, and it has the potential to be vastly more costly. It has also been damaging to science, as scientists adjust both data and even theory to accommodate politically correct positions,? writes Lindzen in the fall 2013 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons? Lindzen compares global warming to past politicized scientific movements: the eugenics movement in the early 20th Century and Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union under Stalin. However, the MIT professor argues that global warming goes even beyond what these past movements in terms of twisting science. ?Global Warming has become a religion,? writes Lindzen. ?A surprisingly large number of people seem to have concluded that all that gives meaning to their lives is the belief that they are saving the planet by paying attention to their carbon footprint.? The goal is to use climate change as a means to increase government power over every aspect of our lives, what we make, how we make it, what energy we use, what cars we drive, even what food we eat. And now the high priests of the global warming religion are demanding what other false religions have demanded ? human sacrifices upon their altar. As Michael Mann has found out, facts are stubborn things and tree rings don?t always ring true.
